HP Laserjet 4 M plus

I have the laserjet 4m plus plugged into the time capsule via a CAT5 cord and it worked fine in 10.5. Now I do not see the printer when I go to set it up. Does anyone know how to retrieve the IP address from the printer? Also which driver should I use? Any help would be greatly appreciated.

Hi - I have an HP 5M printer, but it sounds very similar to the problems I was having when I first upgraded to Snow Leopard last week, so I'll tell you what worked for me.
My HP 5M was originally connected in OS 10.5 using AppleTalk. Now that that is gone, you need to enable TCP/IP on your printer instead of AppleTalk for network printing.
On your Mac, go to system preferences, network settings, and get the I.P. for that machine. It is probably 192.168.1.xxx.
Pick a number between 2 and 254 and use that for the last number in the I.P.
I used picked the number 20, so for my example above, I would use 192.168.1.20.
On the front of your printer panel somewhere there is a menu you can scroll through. (HP MI0 Menu)
My settings are as follows:
Novell: OFF
DLC/LLC: OFF
TCP/IP: ON (this is the important one)
ETALK: ON
Then it will ask you if you want to configure TCP/IP, which you do want to do. Settings for that:
BOOTP: NO
IP BYTE: 1=192
IP BYTE: 2=168
IP BYTE: 3=0
IP BYTE: 4=20
(As you can see from the numbers in the 4 IP BYTE listings, they correspond to the IP address numbers of whatever your router is, with the last digit being the "new" number you picked to access your printer).
There are other menu settings on your printer in that same setting location (SM BYTE, etc), all which are 0 and you don't need to alter them at all.
Then go to your System Preferences, Print & Fax, click the + to add printer, click IP, Protocol: HP Jetdirect, then type in the IP address that you specified on your printer (192.168.1.20) and click Add. You may have to specify your printer in the "Print Using" space if it doesn't automatically assign you as Laserjet 4M Plus.
Let me know how you make out. It can be frustrating if you've never had to do it before, I know it was for me.

  • Laserjet 4/4m Plus Printer

I have been having problems with the subject printer since installing Windows 7 on my HP Pavilion system.  I have another printer (HP 8500 Officjet) that works fine.  The Laserjet printer is attached via a USB parallel adapter.  When I began having problems printing documents, I disconnected the Laserjet printer and turned it off.  I, then, tried to remove the printer from the 'Devices and Printers' window.  The system seems to remove the printer, but when I come back to 'Devices and Printers' , the Laserjet printer appears as if I did not remove it.  When I looked in the 'Device Manager' , the 8500 Officejet printer shows up but the Laserjet printer does not.
The reason I want to remove the Laserjet printer is to get a fresh install of the software drivers for the printer.  I would appreciate any help.  Thank you.

  • Laserjet Printer (4/4m Plus)

I have two printers - HP Laserjet 4/4m Plus and HP Officejet Pro L7590.  Recently, I had to reinstall Windows 7 as a result of problems with the Officejet printer when I upgraded from Windows Vista to Windows 7.  After the upgrade, I began experiencing problems with the Laserjet printer.  When I click on 'Devices and Printers' the Laserjet printer icon is displayed with an exclamation point in a yellow triangle.  I right clicked on the device and selected 'Remove Device'.   The display comes back to me as if the printer is removed.
When I troubleshoot, issues are displayed (e.g. Problem with the Printer, etc) and the test page does not print.  When I click on 'Devices and Printers' again, the same Laserjet printer icon appears as if I had not removed the device at all.  Even after a system restart, the same result appears.  If I try to 'Add a Printer',  I get multiple copies of the printer (all with the exclamation point).  Please help me resolve this.  Troubleshooting does not seem to help.

  • Sudden print quality change on specific devices

    Operating System: OS 10.10.1
I have three Macs (iMac, Mac Mini, Macbook Pro) wirelessly networked with my printer (HP LaserJet 400 M401dw) plus two iPads.
    1. When printing from the (2010) Mac Mini, which was upgraded from Mavericks to Yosemite, print quality is perfect.
    2. When printing from the other computers, purchased new in December 2014, the quality appears to be draft quality, with solid areas cross-hatched. Both these devices originally produced normal quality prints. All were turned off for two weeks over Christmas. The quality issue appeared when the devices were turned on again. The iPads also previously created normal prints.
    3. When I print a test/demo page on the printer itself, the quality appears to be draft quality, as above.
I have deleted and reloaded the drivers on the affected devices to no avail.
The driver version listed on the Mac Mini is 19.7
The driver version listed on the other two devices, and after re-installation, is 2
I have copied the HP folder from the Mac Mini Library to the iMac, but with no affect on the quality. Similarly the HP app from the User Library. I can't find the HP driver version 19.7 anywhere.
If all the computers and tablets produced this effect I'd blame the printer, but the Mac Mini is consistently producing perfectly normal prints!
    What am I missing?

    with solid areas cross-hatched.
That sounds like maybe a clogged inkjet print head.  Have you tried running the HP printer utility to clean the print heads and then another test print?

  • HP Laserjet 1020 Plus not friendly with MS Excel ???

Hi, I am having OS Window 8. I am able to print thru HP 1020 PLUS MS Word docs but not able to print MS Excel sheets as Laserjet printer does not appear in printers list. While setting it as default printer devices, i am getting error message "operation could not be completed (error 0X00000709). Plz guide.........
    Bhupender

    Hi Bhupender,
    Welcome to the HP Forums.
I see that you are having issues setting the printer as the default printer and you can't print from Excel spreedsheets.
I will do my best to assist you with this issue.
I would set up a new Admin user account on the computer to see if this will allow you to set the printer as the default.
Go to start->type change PC settings and press enter. In the opening page, on the left pane, navigate to Users and click it. On the right pane, scroll below, where there is an option Add new user. Click it. Select the appropriate account type and type the username. A new local user account will be created.
    Try printing from Excel again.
If you are still having issues then I would do a full uninstall and download and install the Full Feature Software drivers.
The driver might have become corrupted.
    Uninstalling the Printer Software.
    HP LaserJet 1020 Printer Drivers.
Select your operating system, click next and click on the software to download and install.
Hope this helps resolve your issue.
    Have a great day.

  • HP Laserjet 4 Plus printer driver

I need a compatible printer driver for HP Laserjet 4 Plus printer.  I have Windows 7 - 64 bit.

The Laserjet 4 Plus driver is supplied through Windows Update for Windows 7.  You can do the following:  click Start, Devices and Printers, Add a Printer, select the correct port, Next, then select Windows Update, then select HP as the manufacturer and select the Laserjet 4 Plus.

  • HP LaserJet 4 Plus

    Hello !
I have an HP LaserJet 4 Plus with a duplexer and can't find a driver that allows for use of the duplexer on my Mac.
Does anyone have any ideas ?
    Take Care
    Roy

    Roy,
I'm having a bit of trouble following your last message.
    I re downloaded the
printer driver again and the installation ran but:
I'm not sure what that means -- You ran the installer again. What happened? Did the installer give you an error message or did it finish the installation?
    2) I have 3 HP LaserJet 4 Plus V2.00 * I can use
these but they don't allow any installable options,
    the duplexer.
I'm lost here. Are you referring to PPDs, available choices when you go to add the printer or something else?
    3) I have a HP LaserJet 4 Gimp Version 5 it allows
the options but doesn't print anything. When you
send a print with this driver it goes to cyber space
This is might be a bit of a concern. If I combine this with the inability to get a SHA1 value or even an error message from the Terminal and the HP installer having giving you an error message (at least the first time you ran it), I am beginning to think there may be a problem with your system.
We can explore the possibility of system corruption as a last resort. I did some digging on the HP site and think I have some informatin that will be of use and some additional questions.
    1. The "W2 Invalid pers" error message you get when trying to use the duplexer is defined in thelist of error codes as The job was not printed because the requested personality, such as PostScript (MP), was not installed.
Install the language in which the files are sent, together with enough memory to support that language. Clear message by pressing SHIFT and Continue on the printer.Troubleshooting: a) is there a way to make sure the printer recognizes that the duplexer is installed and functioning? Is there a self test page that you can print that lists the duplexer as being recognized and is funcioning?
    b) how much memory do you have installed? HP says that it needs at least 4 MB for a duplex letter size page at 300 dpi and 12 MB at 600 dpi
    c) when you added the optional duplexer in the PPD, did you also set the memory section to match what you have installed in the printer?
    2. Printing using the Postscript module requires more memory than printing using the PCL language. Have you successfully printed a document using the duplexer using the PostScript option before? It may not be obvious so you might want to double check. The printer doesn't really care whether it gets PostScript or PCL. It will adapt.

  • HP Laserjet 4 plus not working with Powerbook G4 & 10.5.8

I have been using a Powerbook G4 running 10.4.11 with a HP Laserjet 4 plus without any problems. Last week I updated my G4 to 10.5.8. To acheive this, I purchased a full retail 10.1 DVD from Ebay installed it then updated to 10.5.8 using Apples Update Software feature. I believe all the features of my computer work except printing. Previously I have been using an apple wireless network without any problems.
Now when using 10.5.8 I have tried this:
    1) select system preferences
    2) then select print & fax
    3) then click on the plus sign to add a printer
    4) the window that shows up that says default, fax. ip, windows, bluetooth, apple talk, more printers across the top of it.
    5) In this window the are two Laserjet 4 plus machines listed. One is listed with Appletalk and one is listed with Bonjour Shared. I only own one machine. I have tried selecting both of them separately and each time the same problem continues to happen.
Each time either of the Laserjet 4 plus printers are selected the "Print Using" pull down menu begins searching for new drivers. The gray circular animation just goes round and round and eventually does not do anything. Obviously something has not installed correctly. Or there is a conflict somewhere that I have not been able to figure out.
I have downloaded and installed the HP Laserjet and Edgeline print-only.mpkg from HP's website. The problem still exists.
A family member in my household is using an Intel MacBook Pro running 10.5.8 with this same HP Laserjet 4 Plus on the same bonjour shared network without any problems. This being the case, I am confident the old HP 4 Plus printer will work with 10.5.8 using an apple wireless network.
    Any help would be appreciated.
    Thank you,

The HP 4 printer has a JetDirect card in the back of it. The JetDirect card has a 10BaseT ethernet which I connected with an ethernet cable to an airport express base station. The express unit communicates with the main airport unit in my home.
Many years ago I worked for a company that rebuilt macintosh computers and hardware for resale. I rebuilt this HP printer from spare parts and added the JetDirect card at that time and have not had any major problems with the unit until now. It had no problems or printing errors when I was running 10.4.11.
I neglected to mention that after the printer would not work with 10.5.8 I went back and tried to reinstall the optional printer driver package on the original 10.5.1 installation DVD. When this did not work either, I downloaded the HP print driver package available from their website. Could I have somehow screwed this up by installing the incorrect or uncompatible print drivers?
Thank you for your help. I really appreciate it.

  • HP Laserjet IIp plus printer driver

Hi Guys - need help locating a printer driver for HP Laserjet IIp Plus. Trying to get this thing attached to a blue iMac running OS 9.2. Have searched everywhere I can think of. Just hoping someone out there has something with 9.2 running same, or a good lead...
    Thanks in advance

Hi, John. HP offers no Mac drivers for the IIp or IIp+, probably because they were built with only a parallel-port interface, which Macs can't use. They are not PostScript printers, so even if you could connect yours to your Mac, it couldn't use the Apple or Adobe PostScript driver that some HP printers (e.g. my LaserJet 4M) can use.
I believe the only way you'll be able to use the IIp+ with any Mac will be to locate a used Infowave PowerPrint cable-and-driver package (the cable is essential; the driver alone would be of no value). But that will only help you on a Mac that can boot into OS 8.x or 9.x and has an ADB port, which no iMac does. And when it was new, PowerPrint was expensive: it cost more than many low-end printers, so most people just replaced their printers instead of bothering with PowerPrint. Even PowerPrint won't serve your needs unless you have an old ADB-equipped Mac to run it on, so you should probably plan to use a different printer instead of the IIp+.

  • HP LASERJET 1020 PLUS PRINTER PRINTING PROBLEM

    HI.
I AM RAJA PAUL FROM INDIA, I HAVE A HP LASERJET 1020 PLUS PRINTER , NOW A DAYS   I AM FACE ING A PROBLEM , WHEN I AM GOING TO PRINT FROM THIS PRINTER , EVERY TIME PRITING LETEER SHOW  Distorted characters. WHAT I DO?

    Hi @rajahp ,
I see by your post that the printer is printing distorted characters. Thanks for providing the screen shot. I can help you.
It looks like a issue with the toner or possible a hardware issue with the printer or fuser.
Inspect the toner cartridge for damage:
    1. Remove the toner cartridge from the product and verify that the sealing tape has been removed.
    2. Check the memory chip for damage.
    3. Examine the surface of the imaging drum on the bottom of the toner cartridge.
CAUTION: Do not touch the roller (imaging drum) on the bottom of the cartridge.
Fingerprints on the imaging drum can cause print-quality problems.
    4. If you see any scratches, fingerprints, toner on the drum or other damage on the imaging drum, replace the toner.
    5. If the imaging drum does not appear to be damaged, rock the toner cartridge gently several times and reinstall it. Print a few pages to see if the problem has resolved.
I have provided a document for cleaning inside the printer and running a cleaning page, resetting the printer and checking the driver settings. Resolving Print Quality Issues.
    Try printing a document again.
    Let me know the results.
What kind of paper are you using?
Try another type of paper to see if you have the same results.
Are you using Genuine HP Toner?
    What is the toner level?

  • My hp laserjet 1020 plus printer is not working in network in window 98 Pl give me a solution

    hiiii...

    Hi Gaurav,
The printer is not compatible with Mac as you may see below:
    http://h10025.www1.hp.com/ewfrf/wc/document?docname=c01973413&tmp_track_link=ot_faqs/top_issues/en_u...
You may try the following workaround and check if tha may work:
Download and install the following package:
    http://support.apple.com/kb/dl907
Ensure the printer is powered on and connected to your Mac.
Go to System Preferences > Printers & Scanners.
Click the plus sign and select the printer.
Click the Use menu and then click on Select Software.
Select the HP Laserjet 1022 from the list and click on Add.
Now try printing using the added Print Queue.

  • Print error on HP LaserJet 4 Plus

I have a Macbook Air, Mac OS X 10.6.8 and have installed my old trusty Laserjet 4 Plus printer. It printed once, then gave me an error, "W2 INVALID PERS"
and won't print again. I am told I do not need to download another driver, the Air has what is necessary
I have tried the Generic PCL Laser printer driver as well as the HP driver and neither work. I looked on the HP site and there is nothing available for this printer, only the Laserjet 4 Plus "M"
I am using a USB to Parallel cable. In the printer queue everything seems to go to 4% then stop sending.
Even though all the sites say this will work with the Air, could it be that there is not enough Ram (or something) to make it work?
I am sooooo frustrated! It is an old printer but works fabulously for what I need AND I have lots of cartridges for it!
    Any ideas would be appreciated!
       Thank you,
PS...if there is no hope, can you recommend a printer that doesn't gobble up ink?

"W2 INVALID PERS" translates to 'Invalid Personality' - it occurs when you're trying to send a PostScript-formatted print file to an HP printer than only recognizes HP-PCL.

  • Windows 7 and HP LaserJet 4 Plus

I have a new laptop with windows 7 and an old (but very reliable) LaserJet 4 Plus printer.  I was able to download print drivers from the HP site but it still will not print.  I don't get any error messages, just nothing happens when I try to print a document or test page.  Do I need to change something else in my settings?
    This question was solved.
    View Solution.

There are two main areas for issues installing a Laserjet 4 in Windows 7:
Ports.  The Laserjet 4 and its derivatives had a standard parallel port but most Windows 7 machines no longer have a parallel port.  The most common solution is a USB-parallel converter cable.  This can be problematic because many of the converter cables do not support Windows 7.  [Edit - the posts flagged here have models of converter cables users in the forum has reported as working in Windows 7.] Additionally, most of the cables have no documentation (or even a brand name) making it difficult to resolve issues.  The converter may provide a simulated parallel port such as LPT3: or it may be a port like USB001:.  Another option with the Laserjet 4 would be to add a JetDirect card which would provide a network port for the Laserjet 4.  This will require the Laserjet to be connected to a router and would provide network access to multiple computers if you wish.  A typical JetDirect card for the Laserjet 4 is shown here.
Drivers.  The drivers for the Laserjet 4 (and 4M and other derivatives) are delivered through Windows Update.  If Windows Update is enabled (as described in step method 2 here under the section to "Configure Windows Update to"...) you may be able to just connect the USB cable and have the driver properly install.  If not do the following:  click on the Start Orb, Devices and Printers, Add a Printer, then select the appropriate port.  When the list of printers comes up click on Windows Update.  It will take several minutes for the list to repopulate, once this is complete the Laserjet 4 series printers will be available under HP (not Hewlett-Packard).
