HP LaserJet 5m on network; can't print on Leopard

In the past, before Leopard 10.5.5 I could print to a networked HP 5m without a problem. Now with 5.5 installed I get "attempting to connect to host..." and "Network host xxx.xxx.xxx.xxx is busy; will retry..." This error continues +ad infinitum+.
Yesterday I could ping the printer. Today I can't. I've tried every trick found here on the forum, installing with a multitude of different settings, as a LPD and as HP IP and HP JetDirect (which the printer has and has worked in the past.)
I'm EXCEEDINGLY frustrated with what is, apparently, a 10.5.5 problem.
Anyone got the hot item solution?
Thank you muchly.

Yes, yes,
Please call Hp/printer support/mac group and report your issue AND FILE A FORMAL COMPLAINT.
Lost ability to print via TC using USB to Hp M1522nf that is only 4 months old...seems to have occurred upon loading latest Apple Leopard patches about 1 1/2 weeks ago (TC and iChat?? do not remember exactly what came in). Need more Mac people to contact Hp by phone so they can grasp the depth of this issue.
Yesterday, discovered Hp set-up assistant software no longer able to view the USB-connected printer, so cannot start or complete a new set-up. That same printer is invisible to my network as well.
There is a long thread of broken networking issues somewhere on this discussion site, stemming from those recent patches. Seems 3rd party and suppliers were not prepared or fully informed, or keeping up with Apple, so issues galore.
Apple seems to have pushed an ill-fated patches out and everyone with networks be damned! Like it or not...latest set of patches like rotten apples and spoiling the bushel.
Keep us posted if you can.
Thanks!

  • HP Laserjet 4100 on network will not print

Since I’ve installed Snow Leopard, I have not been able to print with my HP Laserjet 4100.
My set-up: new 24” iMac, many hard drives and more. Two devices: HP Color Laserjet 5550 and HP Officejet J5750 are connected to the iMac through a USB Hub. Although initially scanning did not work with the J5750, I was able to make that work once additional drivers were downloaded from HP. Both work fine.
I also have an older HP Laserjet 4100 which has been my steady workhorse for years. It only has Ethernet and serial port outlets. It is connected to an AT&T 2-Wired Ethernet Hub/DSL Modem (model 2701HG-B) that is connected to the iMac.
I’ve contacted HP and Apple about this problem. None of the three people I worked with at Apple could help and the HP representative was unsure if they could help but that it would cost me $40 to find out. According to HP website, since Apple Talk no longer exists, we are required to input the IP for the device. For the 4100, the IP address is 10.0.1.100. I tried this two ways: in the “Add Printer” window under “IP,” inputted as the IPP, and inputted as the HP Jetdirect Socket (as per the HP instructions). When this is done, the printer shows up when you give a print command. However, it does not show up in the “Add Printer” window under “default” or anywhere else.
Status: If I connect the 4100 Ethernet cable directly to the back of the iMac, the “Supply” level indicates the true level of toner in the 4100. However, it will not print. If I connect the 4100 Ethernet cable to the Ethernet hub, the supply level does not show nor can I print.
    Any suggestions?

I am struggling with the same problem. I have two HP 4100dtn printers on ethernet. Each has a manually assigned IP address. I can set up the printer(s) just fine in the Print & Fax Preference and Snow Leopard finds the printer just fine when I enter the IP address and chooses the correct HP Driver.
When I try to print, my print job appears in the queue as expected, than an error appears that something about a "bad command". Sorry, I'm home right now and don't have direct access to the printer so I can't give you the precise language of the message, but the gist of the message is that the system tried to connect to the printer to send the print data but the printer does not know how to respond to the command that was sent.
It's as if the firmware in the 4100 just doesn't have something in it's lexicon that Snow Leopard needs. The HP web site is no help. One page I found says the printer is supported (http://h20000.www2.hp.com/bizsupport/TechSupport/Document.jsp?lang=en&cc=us&obje ctID=c01664444&jumpid=regR1002USEN ) and another page I found says that it is not supported (http://h20000.www2.hp.com/bizsupport/TechSupport/Document.jsp?lang=en&cc=us&obje ctID=c01879014&jumpid=regR1002USEN). The HP on line chat won't let me log in and hold a chat with HP unless I know the Serial Number of the printer, which I don't have here at home.
    More to follow tomorrow.
    Anyone have any ideas?

  • Getting unknown error when printing with latest version(using HP Laserjet 1200). I can't print at all using this version. Able to print previously.

I ceased to be able to print when the latest version of FireFox was
downloaded. I can print from the same websites using I. E.
My printer is a HP Laserjet 1200 series. I only get the error(an unknown error occurred while printing) when trying to print through FireFox. I can print email fine and any other instance as long as I'm not going through FireFox.

    Hello Josh,
We are using a couple of EFI (Fiery) controllers with our Canon copiers and I have been told by Canon support that we need to be using the MacTel (Universal Binary) versions of drivers for Leopard. Luckily for us we have mostly new models of RIPs and the UB drivers exist for these models, but I know that they are not available for all models, which I believe includes your X3e.
To determine if you have a driver or RIP issue, you could save the file as either PS or PDF and then use the EFI utilities, such as Command Workstation, to import the file to the RIP (select Process and Hold) and then see if you can print your multiple copies that way. If that works then you know that the RIP is probably okay.
The next test would be to create a generic PS queue to the X3e and print using this queue. If this works then you can narrow your issue down to the driver.

  • HP LaserJet 200 colorMFP M276nw-Can't print custom sized paper

    HP LaserJet 200 colorMFP M276nw
I'm trying to print on a custom page Size (95mm x 171mm) but it starts printing about a third way down the page so the whole text insint printed. I adjusted the paper tray to the right size, canged the page size to my custom size. I tried to scale to destination paper size but the custom size wasn't in the drop-down menu (To get to the  destination paper size: Mac OSX-File>Print>Paper Handling>Destination Paper Size area>Scale to Fit Paper Size box> Drop down list | Windows-Print>Properties or Prefrences>Effects>Print Document On box>Drop down list) So I don't know what the problem is because the size in bigger than the minimum(76mm x 127mm)
    PLEASE HELP!

Welcome to the HP Forums dancer200013,
I see by your post that the custom size isn't printing correctly on the Mac or Windows computers.
I can help you with this issue today.
On the Windows computer, click on start, control panel, printers and faxes, right click the printer, left click properties, click preferences, the effects tab should be selected as actual size. Then select the Paper/Quality tab. Click on the custom button. Type in the size, type in a name you want to use, select save and OK. (if the name is too long the save button won't be active)
Close the preferences window and reopen it again.
Then on the paper/quality tab or Printing Shortcuts tab. Under paper size select the new paper size by the name you just created.
    Test the printer.
    Hope this helps.
    Have a nice day.
    Thank You.

  • HP P2055 (network) - Can't print from trays automatically

    Hi all,
Have a problem with a HP P2055 (networked) printer. We have the addional tray on it, so it has 3 trays in total. It won't print from any tray except the 1st (bypass) tray. Any print job that is sent through to the printer automatically moves to the 1st (bypass tray) and it requires the user to press the "OK" button on the printer to start the job. The job will not start automatically.
This is causing us a massive headache, as a lot of the MS Word letter templates our users want to print have been configured to print the 1st page from tray 2 (filled with headed paper) and the subsequent pages from tray 3. This works on all our other printers but not this one - where are we going wrong?!
    Many thanks for any help
    Kev

    Hi Shellshokd,
Try using the HP Universal Printer Driver which supports a wide set of printers.
The driver is available at this location.
    http://www8.hp.com/us/en/solutions/business-solutions/printingsolutions/upd.html
Also, just to let you know ePrint also supports some other formats apart from PDF. You can mail doc, docx, xls, xlsx, ppt, pptx, txt, html, jpeg, jpg, png, bmp, gif and tiff files directly to your printers email ID.
    I hope this helps.
    Regards,

  • LaserJet 700 MFP (M775) Can't Print PDF Drawings

Running a MAC OSX 10.9.5, printing to a HP LaserJet 700 MFP (M775).  I can print word docs fine, even ones converted to a PDF.   When attempting to print an 11x17 PDF of a drawing created in CAD I get an error message intermittently, typically a Insufficient Memory. Hoping someone has run into this, and has a fix?

Hi Kappy, thanks for your response.
I have downloaded adobe reader 7 and got it on the Panther system (version 8 won't download from Adobe's site.) I looked in preferences and can't see anything about printers, but maybe I'm missing something? In Printer Set-up Utility, when I go to add, still no appearance of a pdf printer..

  • Hp laserjet 5550n forgets jobs, can only print one copy of a doc at a time

    We're using a Laserjet 5550n in a small office running Mac OS X 10.3.9 to 10.4.6.
We're encountering countless problems when trying to print, and I'm pretty sure I've ruled out the computer setup as the culprit (reset printing system, emptied CUPS caches, repaired permissions, used 'printer setup repair', etc ).
Whenever I try to print multiple copies of the same page it says
*Unable to store job at printer
*Insufficient disk space for this job'
However, storing jobs is switched off anyway!
Another huge problem is that the printer simply 'forgets' large printing jobs. CUPS (at http://127.0.0.1:631) says "printer processing, "Ready to print."", and then just goes back to 'idle'.
When you expect the printed pages to come out nothing happens, and the printer hasn't even started blinking.
We've had this printer for 16 months now, and the problems started just when the warranty had run out.
The 5550n has no additional memory than what it came with
DIMM Slot : 128 MB DDR
    DIMM Slot 2: Empty
    CARD SLOT 1: 32 MB F/W FLASH
I've tried upgrading the firmware to the latest version (20060403 07.009.0), to no avail.
Is there a more detailed log somewhere that I could try looking at to figure out what's going on? The printer web interface Event Log is useless without more detailed explanation.
The printer doesn't give any error messages (though at some point in the past it did say things like "card slot not initalized" or "49.xxxx PRINTER ERROR". I then reinitialised the memory I think ( the 49.xxx error disappeared after that).
I read somewhere about bad RAM or corrupted flash memory. Is there a way to find out if that's the cause?
    Many thanks for any ideas.

  • HP LaserJet 1320 requires user intervention to print after Leopard

Ever since upgrading to Leopard, almost every single time I send a print job to my HP LaserJet 1320 (over the network, it actually connected to a PowerMac G5 in my office), it triggers an error warning (orange flashing light) on the printer. Pressing the main green print button lets the job print, but this is really annoying.
I checked and Apple recently posted a note about the HP LaserJet 1200 having a very similar problem except that an error page was printed after each job. The workaround they suggest for this doesn't work with the LaserJet 1320 problem, however.
A quick Google reveals at least one other Leopard using HP LaserJet 1320 owner is seeing a similar issue. And actually, as I composed this post, I found some 1320 owners in another Apple Discussion post about HP printer issues with Leopard. They suggested using the generic PostScript driver, but then I really like to have the ability to duplex.
Nothing in the /private/var/log/cups/error_log file of note as far as I can tell.
Any ideas? Any other people out there experiencing this problem who might have a solution (other than switching to a generic postscript driver)?

Ok, I think I've figured a way to make the laserjet 1320 stop requiring "user intervention" (e.g. pressing the green button for every printjob).
    Try the following:
Open "System Preferences" -> Choose "Print & Fax" -> Choose the Laserjet 1320 printer -> Press button "Options and Supplies..." -> Select Driver "tab" -> In the drop-down-menu "Fit to page" choose "Nearest Size and Scale" instead of "Prompt User".
The chosen driver should be "HP Laserjet 1320 series", because the generic postscript printerdriver dosen't have the duplex option amongst other shortcomings.
I find it odd that the lowest memory-option is 16-31mb of ram. The default configuration of 16mb is not IN that range, but maybe that is a little too nitty-gritty.

  • Laptops Can't Print Since Leopard

I have 2 Airport Extreme N's in my network. One is a router and the other is a wired bridge. Since Leopard, we are having a lot of trouble keeping connections to our networked printers. If I unplug my 2 airport extremes and plug them back in, I can see and connect to my network printers. However, the next time I want to print I get a message that I should check my printer connections. At this point, if I open Airport Utility and scan, I can see no airports at all, even though the MacBook Pro that I am on is currently connected to the airport and able to get to the internet. So I run around and unplug the airports and then I can delete and re-add my network printers.
I am so sick of running around and unplugging my airports that I want to scream. Has anyone else seen this problem? Are there any solutions out there?

Update: I did a lot of reading and found that Appletalk is no more. I got a parallel to USB adaptor and connected the HP laserjet printer that way and it works fine. No more ethernet connection.
On my HP PSC 1350, I discovered since the OS up grade, I could not scan and the printer utility will not function. The only software HP has for this printer for Snow Leopard is PRINT ONLY. I did find software on Apple's site which I believe is for OS 10.7 and that works (sort of), Utility still won't work and the scan function is cumbersome to operate. It is disappointing that Apple and HP cannot be more in concert concerning up grades and keeping the ability to operate existing equipment. My next printer will be a Brother next time I need ink cartridges!!

  • Suddenly can't print -- something obvious?

    Hello,
From my MacBook Pro, as of about two weeks ago, I can no longer print over the network. I've tried printing two three different printers on two different AirPort Extreme networks (home and office) and directly through ethernet; all of these connections worked fine until recently and nothing that I know of has changed since then. I can print via USB without a problem, and other computers on the same network can still print, so the problem is specific to my computer. When I try to print, the printer status window says "opening printer connection" for a few minutes, then it gives up and the print queue stops. When I reset the printing system and try to add a printer again, no printers appear in the Printer Browser window.
Strangely, I can also no longer see my AirPort Extreme Base Stations through the AirPort Utility application. I can connect to the networks for Internet access, but the utility can't see them. I'm pretty sure this is related to the printing problem, but I don't know how.
Does this indicate a problem with Rendezvous, perhaps?
    Thanks in advance,
    -Arlo

Sorry. I assumed that all the printers were physically on the network. Your tests at home would indicate the network addressing is okay. The problem with the Airport Utility could be due to an update, as this has caused printing problems for many other AEBS owners. Try disconnecting the power to the AEBS for a minute, with the printer still connected and on, and then reconnect the power to the AEBS. If the AEBS is working correctly it will show the USB connected printer as a Bonjour device in the Default Browser view.
Re the HP JetDirect printers, I would try to ping the print server. If that works then you should check which protocol you are using for the printer queue and ensure that is enabled (such as AppleTalk).
Some other things you can try...
    1. Delete the printer from the Printer List and add it again.
    2. Reset the printing system and add the printer again
    3. Run Repair Disk Permissions
    4. Install the Combo updater for the version of 10.4 you are using
    5. Get Fixamac's Printer Setup Repair utility. It can help resolve printer problems.

  • Can't plot from Leopard to an HP Designjet 500, shared by a Winxp machine

Hello, I hope somebody can help me with this issue.
I have a plotter, an HP Designjet 500, plugged into a winxp machine(via usb), and a new iMac 20" alu. They're in the same smb network: the imac can print to the inkjet printers (HP) plugged into the same winxp pc, but not to the plotter. The imac can see it via smb: it appears in the "Add printer/fax" dialog, under the correct windows/smb workgroup(it appears as "HPDesi"...). But it seems that there isn't the right driver for it; in the list, there are several drivers by gutenprint, but no one of them is exactly for the designjet 500 (there's a 500ps version, but it doesn't work, obviously). Then, I've tried to install the driver provided with the included CD, but the driver didn't appear in the list; so I've downloaded the driver from the HP site, but again no driver in the list.
So, I've tried the driver for the 800 version. The best I got was the plotter saying "processing", but nothing seemed to be working... Maybe now plugging the plotter into the imac I could print, with that driver installed, but the plotter is placed in another room...
Simply, at the moment, I can't print form leopard to this plotter.
    Does anybody can help me?
    Thanks
    Luca Sangemi

    Hi,
you should try the hp printer driver version 4.1 for DesignJet 500, it works with leopard: http://h20000.www2.hp.com/bizsupport/TechSupport/SoftwareIndex.jsp?lang=de&cc=de &prodNameId=20988&prodTypeId=18972&prodSeriesId=25301&swLang=18&taskId=8418&swEn vOID=219
My DesignJet 500 ps is connected via ethernet and it is printiting with this driver.

  • I'm trying to install an HP LaserJet 1000 series printer so all systems on my network can access it.

Topography:  All systems are Windows XP.  Wireless network.  Printer is physically attached to one of the XP systems, and printing from that system works as expected.  Trying to add this printer via the "Add Printer" fails.
In "Add Printer", selecting "A Network Printer, or a printer attached to another computer"; press "Next"
On "Next" panel, selected "Browse for a printer", press "next"
On "Next panel", this printer I am looking for "\\host\printername" appears (along with other printers attached to other hosts"; press "Next"
On "Next panel", get popup "You are about to connect to a printer on host, which will automatically installa print driver on your machine.  Printer drivers may contain viruses or scripts that can be harmful to your computer.  It is important to be certain that the computer sharing this printer is trustworthy.  Would you like to continue?"
Select "yes". Get a popup "The server for the "hp Laser Jet 1000" printer does not have the correct printer driver installed.  If you want to search for the proper driver, click OK.  Otherwise, click Cancel and contact your network administrator (that's me) or original equipment manufacturer for the correct printer driver."
Select "OK".  Get a popup box titled "File needed: printer driver INF for hp LaserJet 1000"  Box has input for typing the path where the file is located."
And ... I'm stuck.  :-(    I have no idea what it's looking for, or where it should be found.
The printer itself was a hand-me-down, so it's not like there's any real $$ involved in this; and I could always instll the printer directly on the system that will be using it most, but I'd really like to have it on my network.  Did not receive any original CDs or publications.  The installation file that I used, which I presume installed the driver was down loaded from this site, filename "lj1000hostbased-en-exe"
Any good advice on how to get this printer (it's a VERY nice printer, by the way ... prints wonderfully from the host it's actually attached to) onto my network for remote printing?
    Thanks, in advance!
Update w/ additional possibly useful information:  The HP Print and Scan Doctor does NOT see this printer at all. however the add printer dialog does.  I don't know if that's useful or not, but it is what it is.
    Thanks in advance again!
    Phil

    Hi,
How do you connect the printer to the XP machine ? If USB, you need to make that machine as a Print server. Please try this:

  • Can't print to networked hp laserjet 1320tn

hi there. so i have printer driver updates using apple software update, but haven't been able to print to a networked hp laserjet 1320tn since upgrading snow leopard to 10.6.2. it keeps "looking for printer;" this printer queue worked on 10.6.1. if i install the printer (a second queue) by ip address, trying to print to it keeps saying the address is "busy."

ping is successful, and AFAIK the address is static. web interface gives me the following info for the printer in question:
Status: Processing - "Looking for printer..."
