HP Laserjet 5si 79 (0015) / Line=536
Our HP Laserjet 5si is old, but still works well. In the past couple of weeks we have been getting a random error Line=536, 79 (0015). We haven't had any changes to software of PC's in the office, so I don't know why this is occuring now. Any thoughts what this is? From other 79 error codes, it appears it might be a driver issue. We can clear by turning off the printer. We have not identified when/who is printing when this error occurs. If this is related to drivers and an OS, does that mean all people using this printer will have to make updates to drivers on thier PC's? Sorry if I sound like an idiot, I am not good with this stuff.
I would think this is a driver issue and since this is such an old printer, I would use the most basic driver I could find. In your case I would use the pcl5 driver if not using already. Keep in mind even though it has been working fine what happens is many web sites use new coding and when you go to print, the older driver does not understand everything and you get the error. Try the driver on one computer first to see if that computer is able to print without issue and if it works use the same driver on all the other machines.

Win 7 x64 printer driver for old HP LaserJet 5si
OK, I know everyone's dealt with one of these along the line, and I thought I had these dang printers figured out completely, but this one is a flat out freak, and anyone who can help, I appreciate it. Working in an environment with several new Dell
Desktops (Precision T3500s) with Win7 x64 installed on them. They have an old HP LaserJet 5si on the network. Several of the Win7 computers on the network are already connected to it by the private IP, and they work. I just installed
a new client, and trying to install to the printer by IP, can't find the driver. Look on HP's site for Win7 x64, and they say "it's already installed on Win7, we're not giving you a driver". Well, it's not installed on Win7 x64, not when I try
to navigate to it when installing the printer, there is no "LaserJet 5si" listed. Weird thing is, when I look at the other computers, and RE-Install that same printer, I CAN find the "LaserJet 5si" printer listed. OK, so I must not have all
the updates on my new computer, right? YES I DO, WINDOWS UPDATE TELLS ME IT'S ALL UP TO DATE. WTF??? Thanks in advance.OK, I figured it out FINALLY. The problem was with the "Windows Update" feature within the "Install Printer" wizard. A folder called "Software Distribution" on the root of C: was causing the trouble. Found this fix, the Windows Update feature
then worked, then the correct driver installed. Dang there's 6 hours of work...hope this helps someone avoid the trouble.
These steps did resolve the issue:
1. Open Task Manager (Ctrl-Alt-Del)
2. Click Sevices Tab and then Services Button (Bottom Right)
3. Under Name find "Windows Update"
4. Right click "Windows Update" and select Stop. do not close
5. Open Window Exploper and browse to C:\Windows
6. Delete the Folder "SoftwareDistribution"
7. Go back to Servies, Right click "Windows Update" and select Start
After this, do your usual routine to install the printer, and select "Windows Update" to find driver (it shouldn't fail now), and afterwards, you should be able to find the correct (in this case LaserJet 5si) driver. Yay! -
HP Laserjet 5si is printing postscript, not the print job
What is the adjustment that needs to stop my HP Laserjet 5si from printing page after page of postscript jibberish?
Thanks to everyone that helped me to install this printer in my System Printer cue. After the present problem is solved, all should be well.I eliminating my router and connecting the 5si directly to the Mac's Ethernet port. Now nothing happens, other than an error message that my network is busy.
You'll likely have to delete the exiting Printer in Printer Setup Utility and redo it after moving it... it may not even work without setting the IP of the hp to the same range as the Mac, without the Router handing out DHCP.
On the Garbage, if the 1st page starts out something like this, then it may think it's a Line Printer instead of a PostScript Printer...

HP LaserJet 5si won't print -- jobs stopped
Mac G5 OSX 10.4.x
LaserJet 5si with 2552 Jet direct card
Networked via Linksys switch
I lost my internet connection to all computers yesterday and ended up having to reset my Linksys Router. Now everything works except this printer which is connected to the router through a workgroup switch. Printer shows up in Printer list. Jobs get spooled to printer. I get a message that jobs for this printer are stopped. When I click "start" it looks like it is printing, but then shows up as "jobs stopped".
Apple Talk is active. Disk Utility did a repair disk permissions. I have taken the Jet Direct card out and reinstalled it. I have reinstalled the LaserJet drive software.
Can anyone help me???
MarjorieI am having the same problem with my Espon Stylus CX6600, but only with certain programs. Dialatech told me to go into Page Setup and make sure where my printer was selected under "Format for." Don't know why it wouldn't work when "Any printer" was selected, but it worked great for a couple months. The problem's back now, even though my printer is selected in the "Format for" thing, but maybe this will help for you. Please post if you come up with any other solution!

Cannot print to Brother MFC 9840 CDW or HP LaserJet 5si
I have spent a good deal of time online and the phone with Brother and they consider this an 'apple' problem because it occurred after snow leopard was installed. I have updated everything that I think I could, but when I try to print to my printer from either computer in PDF format it gives trouble. At times it will not print at all, and I get error messages such as the printer is not available. Sometimes it comes through, especially with word docs.
When I use the MacBook Air to try to print to the LaserJet 5si I get the problem where the printer says it is 8% done and then goes to pause. If I resume printing it will pause within a few seconds. I cannot get it to print at all. Oddly, the printer disappeared when I uploaded snow leopard. I used my Mac Pro settings to reinstall it to my printer list but using the exact same settings as the Mac Pro it will not print from Air but will from Pro.
Any suggestions? Or insight?I got the 9840 working. I installed all the latest drivers (still no joy) but then I went into the Preferences, uninstalled the printer by simply highlighting the printer and selecting . I then closed the prefs, went back in and added it back . **** if it worked in Word immediately.
I agree with most - this has been a very unApple-like experience - hopefully not a harbinger of things to come. -
Configuring AppleTalk for HP LaserJet 5si?
Hi all,
One of our printers was recently "fixed," and in the process the network settings were wiped out. While the printer can be added and printed to simply enough using the add printer utility as an AppleTalk printer, I cannot find a way through the telnet application to configure the AppleTalk name - "LaserJet 5si" just doesn't have a good ring to it. HP's webpage has proven to be useless, as has the manual. Any ideas on how to do this?
Thanks! The only thing I've found to work is the Classic HP Laserjet Utility, which comes in the OS 8/9 laserjet installer.

I can not find any downloads for the LaserJet 5si. We have a combination of machines and we have not had an issue using the 5si on Windows XP Pro and Win 7 Pro. However we now have a Win 7 upgrade machine that doens not have the 5si dirver listed.
Why has the driver download from HP's site been deleted or I can find them. I guess they must be trying to influance me to replace vs. continue using a great machine. If forced to replace, I definatly will consider Brothers and Canon a better alternatives with one of their multi-function printer/legal size scanners.Where can I get a driver for the HP LJ 5si for Mac OSX 10.6 (Snow Leopard)? The printer is still a work horse, and we depend on its particular features.

Networking a Laserjet 5si through two routers.
We have on our home network an HP Laserjet 5si (with the network adaptor) which we use as our primary printer. Lately, the main router (a D-Link Di604 out of which all 3 computers on our network leave) has broken, we have another router to replace it, but whilst the internet and networking works fine through this new router, the printer does not. The printer is in a second D-Link router (a wireless one, unsure of model) which comes out the 4th spare port on the first router. The PS3 also on this router works fine with the new setup. I seem to recall that setting up the printer in the first place was quite a difficult task as we had no instructions and just worked it out as we went along. With the new router, the printer cannot be found by any of our computers, even if I tell it the printers local IP address. How can we set the router up to work through this router configuration?
Thanks,
Pablo.Helpful forum, this.

Each time I print a page with an image a black line appears on the right of the page.
If I take out the image from the page it prints correctly.
This happens with any program (word, pdf, power point, etc)
I downloaded the last version of the driver and the problem remains.
If I set the preferences to 1200 resolution and rotate the page the problem desapears
On the web there are a lot of references about the same problem
I am using XP professional edition and my printer is Laserjet 1018
I have changed the toner cartridge and the problem remains
I have another 2 printers of the same model with the same problem
Can anyone help with a solution?Has anyone found a solution to this?

List of device types in SAP Releases 4.6x/6.xx/NW04/NW04s
OSS NOTE : 8928
Installation of new device types ********************
Many device types are appended as a zip-attachment to this note.
README.TXT contains information about these device types and codepages.
README_UPLOAD.TXT contains information on how to import the device
types.
PRINTER DRIVERS AND DEVICE TYPES:
In R/3, a distinction is made between "printer driver" and "device type". The device type consists of all the attributes defined for an output device. For correct access, these must be made known in the R/3 system. They cover aspects such as control commands for font selection, page size, character set selection, character set used and so on. One of these attributes is the printer driver to be used by SAPscript (R/3 forms processor) for this particular printer.
If your printer is not specified in the list below, ask the manufacturer if the printer is compatible with one of the defined printers or if it can be used with another emulation (for example, Postscript).
If the printer is not compatible or cannot be operated using an emulation, you must create a new device type (if the printer is not compatible). To print from SAPscript, you must choose one of the existing printer drivers.
At present, there are five SAPscript printer drivers. They include:
for HP-PCL5 (for example, HP Laserjet 3,4,5,6 series)
for PostScript printers (PS level 2)
for PRESCRIBE (for example, Kyocera FS-1500)
for device types SWIN/SAPWIN/xxSWIN/xxSAPWIN
for all other models.
The last driver is known as the "standard driver". It cannot provide absolutely precise positioning on the paper and does not support proportional fonts. Printer drivers are relevant for forms output with SAPscript. For the output of ABAP lists special printer drivers are only used as of Release 4.5A. They are anchored in the C kernel and are developed and maintained exclusively by SAP.
In the spool environment, device types refer not only to printers but also other output devices, for example, fax machines. Device types support specific printers or printer models. Device type definitions are stored completely in tables and can be individually adapted, modified or enhanced. If SAP performs such an adjustment for a customer, it constitutes a consulting service, and is generally charged seperately. On the other hand, the list of device types, above all in conjunction with SAP's hardware partners, is continually expanded.
COMPATIBLE PRINTERS:
Some printer models have been so successful on the market that many OEM products, clones and compatibles are also listed. You can often use compatible printers with R/3 by entering the printer definition of the original. Since complete compatibility is extremely rare, SAP can offer no assurances regarding the usability of compatible printers. This also applies to follow-up models made by the original producer.
LIST OF PRINTERS:
This is the list of device types supplied by SAP in different Releases. Most of these device types use "Western European" or "North American" character sets. Some device types in newer Releases however, also support other character sets and language areas such as Russian or Czech.
The device types named in this list are supported in the standard R/3 System as of the release mentioned.
If an OCR-A font (prerequisite for check printing) or an OCR-B font is supported in the R/3 device types, this is indicated. However, this generally requires additional font cassettes or firmware for the printer involved, since few printers have an OCR-A font "built in." For additional information about this, contact the printer manufacturer.
Check related notes attached for addition information on printer supportin R/3.

Problem running reports to network printer
Application Server Enterprise Edition 10g (9.0.4.1)
Customer is having some difficulty printing reports to printers attached to client PCs and shared on the network. Occasionally, when a report is requested by the application with DESTYPE=PRINTER, DESFORMAT=DFLT and DESNAME=\\<PC>\<server share>, the status of the report remains "Opening report" and it never completes and cannot be removed. The report server (and dependent services) must be restarted to free the engine. The report is requested from a Forms application via a Report object.
Here's detail from the Report Server engine trace file (traceOpts=trace_all):
Debug 50103 (EngineImpl:setCommandLine): Running
Info 50132 (EngineImpl:setCommandLine): Get command line: userid="ELSIEM paramform="NO" jobname="flysheet.rep" p_cov_effdt="20030315" desname="\\oldmelishal155\wc_hp4" p_rcvd_dt="" p_carrid="24724" p_ar_amt="" authid="ANONYMOUS" destype="printer" p_type="POL" batch="YES" p_ar_code="" report="flysheet.rep" background="yes" expiredays="0" desformat="DFLT" p_polnbr="08WC001094"

The last line appears to be the culprit. It seems as if the engine is attempting to communicate with the printer but failing. While this report was still "active" another request was made about 3 hours later that printed without issue.
The printer's host OS is XP. The printer is a HP LaserJet 5si with up-to-date drivers (PCL 5e).
Are there any specific issues with HP printers? Any ideas how to proceed with this problem? I've search high and low on Metalink and have not seen anything like this. I'd appreciate any help.
Thanks,

Oh yes, I can see at "Print Settings" that I can specify a printer ("Set layout to: Specify printer settings"). However, I can't specify a printer in the "Destination" settings. So I can't do a scheduling, after my opinion? -
I am trying to plot downloaded construction plans on an HP designjet 800 but get thick black lines horizontally across the sheet. The widths of the lines are not consistent. The lines do not appear when I plot the plans on 8.5 x 11 sheets, only when I try to plot them to scale on larger sheets.
I'm having the same problem. Currently I'm not hooked up to a printer, I just want to generate a pdf to send to my print house to see if we can use this program or not.
It does seem to be an issue with the borders... I also could not reduce the border size below 0.56 in.
What I did (pain in the butt) was to try setting up different fake printers until I got one that would let me set the border to be small enough to meet my needs. This is a pain, because I dont know how to set up a printer that isn't attached to my machine, so I'm only setting up printer through IP printing. I found the HP LaserJet 5Si /5si MX driver lets me set the border to 0.08. Better, but not perfect.
Most photographers I know want to fit as many images as possible onto a single contaact sheet, which is the most efficent use of the space and $. I understand wanting to automaticaly set the page border minimum to wahtever the printer reports it as... but this makes no sense for positioning images on a page relative to each other.
The solution to this would seem simple:
one fixed border setting for the page (derived from printer info) and one variable setting for the images.
I'm surprised that this isn't the case already... which leads me to believe that this is a bug. I'm going to experiment more to see what I come up with... this is an important part of my workflow and will be a major factor in whether I keep using Aperture.
on another note... right now I send my images to the printer as 250dpi jpeg files (their request... output is great on photo paper). These PDFs aren't what I need to begin with because photoshop reports the contact sheet pdf as being 200dpi. Any ideas on how to set the DPI of the output like I can in photoshop?

I've got an Epson R1800 and a Dual 2 GHz PowerPC G5. I just tried printing an 11x17 print and it was extremely light (almost draft-like quality).
Using what version and what driver? There is a know problem with the Gutenprint drivers v5.1.3 that come pre-installed with Leopard. For Epson printers, they will default to Draft mode unless you specify a specific resolution. Later versions of the Gutenprint drivers have corrected this.
After downloading what I thought was the latest driver, I tried again, to no avail. Every time I try and load a new printer it only provides me with the Gutenprint selection.
What version of the Gutenprint drivers are you using? What settings have you tried under the Printer Features section of a print window? You need to make sure that you select the type of paper you are using to print. You should also set the *Image Type* (Output Control Common 2) for the type of job you are printing. If things are still too light, you can try increasing the Density or perhaps just the *Black Density* under Output Control Extra 1 2.
Any known work-arounds????
Have you tried the driver from Epson. It is not included with Leopard. You need to download and install it separately. Start at _http://www.epson.com/cgi-bin/Store/support/SupportLeopard.jsp_ to find the driver download.
