HP LaserJet Printer Network Replacement for AppleTalk

Have found the fix for making the HP LaserJet 2100 TN work on an Ethernet network with Snow Leopard OS. The key was finding the address of the LaserJet on the network. This was done by holding down the two buttons on the top of the printer simultaneously for five seconds. This causes a ‘JetDirect Configuration Page” to print. On that is the IP Address of the printer.
With that information, open the ‘Print and Fax” page of the Systems Preferences. Under the list of printers click the ‘+’ sign. This open a dialogue box. Click the ‘IP’ icon at the top. Under Protocol, chose HP Jetdirect – Socket. In the Address space enter the IP Address of the printer. In the Name space enter ‘HP LaserJet 2100 Series’. You may have to select the print driver from the drop-down menu at the bottom of the page, or it might self select. Then click ‘Add’.
Should do it.
This is all caused by Apple not including AppleTalk support in Snow Leopard. The process could work for other printers.

Just keep in mind that if there is not a permanent address assigned to the printer, if the network resets itself for whatever reason, there may be a new address assigned to it, and you will have to go through this process again. You should be able to configure a permanent address for the printer to avoid that problem. Check with the documents for the printer or the print server. You can also reserve addresses through your router so that address will not be assigned to another device.

  • Re: Print head replacement for OfficeJet Pro L7580

Help!  I have an OfficeJet Pro L7580  and the ink was running dry on the black and yellow.  I replaced the ink, but now it still will not print.  It says there is a problem with the yellow and black print heads.   Question is where do I get them and how much do they cost and will that fix my problem?  I have found them in my computer and can take them out with no problem, just don't know how to get new ones!

The online HP Parts Store should be able to help get the part:

  • Cannot print PDF file on my  HP 1200 Series Laserjet printer.

I have a Mac computer 27inch which has been working well with my HP 1200 Laserjet printer until about two months ago.  I am wondering if the newest update for my operating system has caused a conflict.   It sits and spends many minutes trying to load the file to the printer,  then just acts like it has already done it and the printer screen shows that is is completed.   My operating system is  OS X 10.9.5  (Maverick) Have not been able to use printer,  I have another printer that is Epson all in one and it works fine, but the ink is expensive compared to the use of my Laserjet printer.
Thanks for any help on this.

I have also seen a error message pop up on my screen saying that someone else on my network is also using my IP address.  I really don't understand what that means.    It occasionally does this and states the ip address number.   I don't know how to search and find another ip address or to change it on my Mac.  We have three computers and several cell phones in the house plus an Ipad and Ipod.  So I guess we have at least 9 connections to the network.   Just don't know how to identify each IP number and who is using what.
If you have all of your network devices set to DHCP, then your wireless router is responsible for allocating an IP address to each device. If there is one or more devices not set to DHCP, then this is when you can get a message about a device already using the same IP address.
To check what IP addresses have been allocated to all network devices you can connect to the wireless router web page.  Here there should be a page that displays each device connected to the router and what IP address it is using.

has not printed at all.  I appreciate your input,  It gives me a few more ideas.  I may need to download an updated Adobe Reader.  I feel like I am getting close.
If you have been using Acrobat Reader every time this PDF does not print then try opening the PDF in Preview to see if you get the same symptom.
Also, if you prefer to use Acrobat Reader, from the print dialog you will see an Advanced button next to the printer name. Opening this will show a check button titled "Print as Image". This can help with PDFs that contain layering, in that it will flatten the PDF by converting it to a raster file before sending it to the printer. While this can result in creating a larger spool file that can then result in the transfer from the Mac to the printer taking longer, it often helps with getting some PDF files to print.

  • Can Appletalk be active on two network ports for printing?

Here's the core of my question: Can I keep Appletalk active on my Airport network port (in order to print to a wireless print server on an HP Laserjet 2100M) and simultaneously keep it active on my Ethernet port (in order to print to a Brother HL 2700CN networked through my router)?
Nothing I have read gives me to believe I can have Appletalk active on more than one network port. If that is the case, my second question would be:
I there some other way to print to either printer on the network without having to turn off Appletalk manually on the ports not being used?
    Here's the configuration I'm facing
    G4 Quicksilver 10.3.9
HP Laserjet 2100M with wireless Belkin DP-311P print server
Brother HL-2700CN wired to Belkin Wireless-G router
I would appreciate any help on this, even if it's the simple response, "No, you can't print to both without manually de/activating Appletalk."

for file sharing between computers running 10.4.x and 10.3.x.
actually, not for that either. 10.4 has dropped support for AppleTalk-only File Sharing to make way for Intel Macs and their protocols. 10.4 does still support AppleTalk printing.
AppleTalk would be required to print to older Apple LaserWriters that do not support LPD/LPR printing. In all but two cases, the printers have no Ethernet port, so a Bridge device or software would be required:
    Personal LaserWriter NTR
    Personal LaserWriter 320
    LaserWriter Select 310
    LaserWriter Select 360
    LaserWriter 4/600 PS
    LaserWriter IIf
    LaserWriter IIg (Ethernet)
    LaserWriter Pro 600
    LaserWriter Pro 630 (Ethernet)
Some third-party wireless Access points do not pass AppleTalk packets at all, and cannot be used to print to that class of older LaserWriters.
In 10.3.9 and previous, AppleTalk may still be used for File Sharing with older Macs.

  • Networking printing in the post-AppleTalk era

Ok, you can probably see where this is going ...
I am an all-Mac household, currently running 10.7 on my Mac Pro, and 10.6 on my MacBook Pro. Until very recently, I also had a Powerbook G4 running 10.5 and an old HP Laserjet 4000N connected to the network. Technically, the HP printer was connected to the Powerbook and shared, but it was plugged directly into the router via ethernet. The Powerbook has died, and with it my ability to print.
The trouble is that 10.6 and 10.7 no longer support AppleTalk, so older printers aren't recognised by my newer Macs. What do I do!!!???
This printer is still perfectly good. I can't be older than 5 years, and for my occassional black-and-white uses, it does the job fine. But how can I connect it to the network?
Ideally, I could connect it to the router directly, and the printer wouldn't actually be associated with any computer. But it would be just as good for one of the newer machines to have the old HP on board.
Is there a workaround for AppleTalk? Is there some Terminal command? Some software package? Anything?!

Huzzza!! The guy in this article has my exact same printer, so it was very seamless. I guess it was my own fault for not discovered the HP Protocol option — it's been there all these years.
For the sake of anyone with a similar problem, here are some screenshots:
    1. Add a printer as you normally would
    2. Choose IP, as opposed to Default
    3. Choose HP Jetdirect - Socket (because I have an HP)

  • LaserJet 2550n network printer on XP host PC, can't install Windows 7 client laptop

Have Color LaserJet 2550n network printer connected to XP host PC. I can't install  Windows 7 client laptop for printer. The wireless network is fine, I can access documents back and forth, merely the printer doesn't work and there's no way to download 64bit drivers for this printer from HP.

    Resolved, not solved.
I talked to HP product support. The Officejet Pro 8500 A910 will not install on Windows XP (at least the Home Edition) when networked through a router. It will install through USB. I uninstalled the program and reinstalled it with only USB connected to clean out all the network printer/scanner information. Product support claimed it would install through an ether net cable connected between the printer and computer but this does little good if you need internet access.

  • Problem with Lion 10.7.3 with hp laserjet 3600n network  printer

    Hi
Problem with Lion 10.7.3 with hp laserjet 3600n network  printer
Guys i am having a mad day with this new OS and some network printer none of them work with new LION,The software for this printer is currently unavaliable. Please contact the printers manufacturer for the latest software, i need the drivers for this, please give a hand with this issue
    Best Regards

Exactly the same infuriating problem we and many others get with OS X from 10.6 on when Apple dropped Apple Talk.
Having spent days fighting to get drivers that will run our older laser printers like HP5000, 5100, 2100, 2200 and 4MV, we came up with a simple solution:
We use an iMac running 10.5.8 as a print server. All the 10.6 upwards Macs on the same network will see and add the printers immediately through the shared older (Apple Talk) iMac.
Cheapest and simplest option really .... it'sannoying that a brand new Mac can no longer see existing network printers without complex investigation and trying various downloads.
Answer is simple and cheap if you happen to own a 4 or 5 year old Mac with an OS lower than 10.6 which still has Apple Talk.

  • Which Color LasterJet Printer should Ibuy for iBook G4 on wireles network?

I have been told that the "all in one" printers, ex.) HP, etc...are not good for wireless printing with the iBook G4's. I want to reccomend a decent Color LaserJet for my sister. She just bought an iBook G4, first person ever in the family to purchase an apple product other than me. I want it to work. Any suggestions? Or does anyone know where i can find more information on this topic here on the apple disscussion form? Thanks so much!
    Macluva99

I have been told that the "all in one" printers, ex.)
HP, etc...are not good for wireless printing with the
    iBook G4's.
This may be in reference to a cheap all-in-one (designed to be run connected directly to a computer) being attached to an Airport base station.
If you purchase a wireless all-in-one with Mac drives you will find it will work fine with the iBook G4.
My printing only Canon iP4000r has worked really well with both Macs and PCs.
The HP all-in-one in the office came with a JetDirect print server which has worked reasonably well with the Macs and the PCs.
I want to reccomend a decent Color
    LaserJet for my sister.
Does it need to be wireless?
I have used the Colour LaserJet 2500 (with a third party network card) for a couple of years (and apart from the cost of the toner cartridges) it has worked well.
For decent colour work I have found inkjets give much better results using the right paper.

  • Lost Printer Features Pane for HP LaserJet 4050 and Color LaserJet 4550

    Hello,
I am trying to restore the Printer Features Pane for 2 different Hewlett-Packard printers we have connected to our LAN.
The Printers Features Pane is available on several of our older iMacs but NOT several of the newest iMacs just recently installed.
After doing some reading in the discussion forum I thought this was due to an erroneous PPD file and replaced both PPD files on the new iMac (with the absent Printer Feature Pane) with the PPD files copied from the old iMac (with the correctly functioning Printer Feature Pane) . I actually copied the PPD files into both of the following locations:
    • /Library/Printers/PPDs/Contents/Resources/en.lproj
    • /System/Library/Printers/PPDs/Contents/Resources/en.lproj
Unfortunately this did not work even when i deleted the old printer, replaced the old PPD files with the new ones (actually replaced the new ones with the older ones from the previous iMacs on which the Printer Features Pane was working as anticipated), restarted the machine and then added the printer selecting the correct PPD file. All machines are running X.4.10
I am sure this is a simple fix that i am just overlooking but really need to get back the option of printing to the "Letterhead" tray of our printers.
    Any suggestions are appreciated.
    Thanks
    Mike

The following is an extract from the PPD for the LaserJet 4050 (same file on both machines that display and don't display a printer features option) that appears to be the salient area of the file for dealing with this functionality. :

I don't know if it helps you to know that the Printer Features option did work on my current G5 tower, but following an erase and install that functionality has been lost.

    Hi,
You may either use the standard Plug and Play drivers by running the installation, then terminate it and add the printer through the Windows have a printer dialog. the software can be downloaded from here:
    http://h20000.www2.hp.com/bizsupport/TechSupport/SoftwareDescription.jsp?lang=en&cc=us&prodTypeId=18...
Select Add a Printer and follow the steps by creating a Standard TCP/Ip port by providing the printer IP address.
Follow the steps till the model selection is listed.
Click Have Disk and browse to C:\Program Files\HP\HP LaserJet P2030 Series (May also be listed under Program Files (x86) for 64-bit OS), from there select the displayed INF file and select your printer.
Follow the steps to complete the wizard.
For standard network installation you may use the full software below:

If I understand your question, you would like to use the AiO remote app on your iPad with your Laserjet 4050, correct? If this is case, unfortunately, the AiO remote app is not supported with the Laserjet 4050 and the iPad.

  • Any guess on how long it will take for HP to come up with laserjet printer drivers for LION?

HP does not have the printer drivers available for the Mac OSX 10.7 (LION) for the HP Laserjet 2420/2430 series; which has been true for previous OSX releases also?  Just wondering if it's 1-3 months, or more before our printers can be expected to work again.  Is it long enough to just abandon LION for a while, and go back to SnowLepard?

Since this is for an HP product support, you might want to visit their site:
    http://h20000.www2.hp.com/bizsupport/TechSupport/SoftwareIndex.jsp?lang=en&cc=us &prodNameId=412123&prodTypeId=18972&prodSeriesId=416419&swLang=8&taskId=135&swEn vOID=4082
They'll be able to estimate time of delivery better than Apple, who doesn't make HP drivers.
