  • Restoring Your Nano When The USB Port No Longer Recognizes The Device

I can't say for certain if its coincidental or not but as soon as the latest update of v9 for iTunes came out, my computer stopped recognizing my iPod (1st Gen Nano) through all the USB ports.
First, I tried the Nano on a different computer with Windows Vista but the the latest version of iTunes had also been updated on that machine. The laptop also would not recognize the device through any of the USB ports.
Second, I switched cables. Same problem.
Third, I reset the device. Same problem.
Fourth, I tried to update the drivers on the device manager. Same problem.
Fifth, I uninstalled iTunes per Apple's uninstall instructions and that was to no effect.
Now my last option is to restore the device, however because I can't get it to be recongized on any computer I own- I don't know how to do this? Do I take it to an Apple store? Is there a manual way to restore the device to factory settings since every computer I have access to won't recognize the device?
    Thanks!

I have exactly the same problem. After updated to the latest version of iTunes 10, my 5th gen ipod stopped being recognized by my Windows 7 Computer.
    I've tried:
    1. Un/reinstalling Itunes 10, then updating to 10.1 or whatever was the latest one as of 9/30/10.
    2. Using a different iPod USB cable to connect to the computer.
    3. Using a different USB port.
    4. Trying the iPod on multiple computers.
    5. Manually selecting the driver within Device Mananger in Windows 7 from "Unknown USB Device" to "Apple USB iPod Driver".
    6. Restarting my computer, multiple times.
    7. Resetting my ipod "Menu+Select buttons for 6-10 seconds"
From what I understand I could resolve this problem by restoring the iPod to its factory settings, but since I can't get it to be recognized in a computer I am stumped.
This will be my third iPod in 4 years that has crapped out (out of warranty of course) If I can't get this fixed I'm buying a Zune.

  • Mountain Lion 10.8 no longer recognizes external drives

I just upgraded to 10.8 and my two external drives are no longer recognized (either in Finder or the desktop). One is a Drobo raid drive and the other is a Seagate 2 TB external drive. Both have been working fine for years under the previous OS version but are not recognized by 10.8. I have rebooted both the iMac and the drives but nothing shows up. Drobo provides a desktop dashboard that does see the Drobo drive and reports no errors. I use both drives for backups which no longer works since the drives are not recognized. Any suggestions?

Yes, both there.. but 'repair disk permissions" and "verify disk" are greyed out on Drobo and all are greyed out on the Seagate.

  • Keyboard usb port no longer supports flash drive after lion installed

Why would this be the case?
Worked fine with Leopard and Snow Leopard.
Same everything except installed lion and now is says My keyboard ain't got enough power.

Lion is a new world.  Even the first few days have the CPU/HD very busy indexing all of the new files for Spotlight.
From other posts I read SL was a power-pig compared to Leopard, and Leopard compared to Tiger ...
I guess we just pay $30 and be happy we have not been "assimilated" into Billy-Borg's world yet ... yet

  • When I plug in my IPOD Nano into a USB port, the computer recognizes it as a printer.  It then attempts to install the printer software, which is already installed.  The only way to fix it is to unplug the printer.  Any thoughts?

  • USB ports could not recognize DVD Burner and WD Portable disk

    Hello all,
This is my first question to ask here about X1 Carbon. I hope you could help. I was trying to install a software using the Lenovo slim dvd burner, but the usb ports of the laptop didn't recognize it. Also, I tired to install the software using my portable HDD (Western Digital A08 Elements), but the usb ports of the laptop didn't recognize it as well. I plugged a usb thumb driver into the usb ports; it did recognize it!!! But I really need my dvd burner to be detected. I will appreciate if you could suggest an appropriate solution to my problem.
    Thank you

  • My USB ports will not recognize any devices, iPhone or external drives. Keyboard and printer work, any suggestions?

My USB ports will not recognize any devices, iPhone or external drives. Keyboard and printer work, any suggestions?

I'd start by looking in system profiler.
the blue Apple icon > About this Mac > More info...
goto the hardware section. Scroll down and click on  USB
See what happens when you have the device plugged in & not plugged in.
Move keyboard & mouse around to verify that ports work. Plug device in a port that worked with keyboar or mouse.  Keyboard usb ports are rather low power.
Perhaps device is taking too much power.  Are devices power or unpowered?  Try connecting devices to a usb hub.

  • My USB ports won't recognize any devices. Thoughts?

I am still using Mountain Lion, and I have been warned about updating. My USB ports will not recognize or connect to any external devices. Any thoughts?

Try resetting the SMC. Use the procedure for "a battery you should not remove yourself".

  • My Pavilion g7 no longer recognizes optical drive.

Over weekend, notebook no longer recognizes DVD drive.  Compuiter lists C: and its two partitions, Drecovery) and EHP Tools), but no DVD drive (I believe it was) H:  When I put in a DVD, the drive spools up a bit, then stops.  Auto-play does not work.
How can I get it to "see" the optical drive again?
    Thanks.

    Hi,
First, try the automated fixit from Microsoft on the link below.
    Windows 7
    Vista
Check if the drive is now listed and working.
If it still iit's still missing, click the Start Menu, open All Programs, open Accessories, right click the Command Prompt and select 'Run as Administrator'.  In to the prompt type the following command and hit enter.
sfc /scannow                 ( note that there is a space between sfc and the / )
Let the process complete, then type exit and hit enter.
Next, click the Start Menu, open the Control Panel and click on Device Manager.  Next click to open DVD/CD-ROM Drives.  Right click the drive and select uninstall.  Do not delete drivers if asked.  When the device has uninstalled click on the 'Scan for Hardware Changes' icon ( usually just below Help on the toolbar ).  Let windows reinstall the drive and see if it is now listed and working.

  • USB port gone after ejecting external HDD

    All software uptodate.
I have strange issue with USB ports. After ejecting USB drive (external HDD, powered by USB bus), which worked perfectly, USB port does not recognize anything, nor providing power. Turning MBP off and then booting back solves this issue.
    Any ideas?

After some time I connected external HDD to "dead" port again. And got power. But still no devices recognized on this port. For example: iPad does not charge, not recognized.

No, and that shouldn't be done with an AirPort Extreme or Time Capsule.

  • How do I get my Mac to recognize external drive filled with 5 projects, created at Apple Store?

How do I get my Mac to recognize external drive filled with 5 projects, created at Apple Store? Hi Tom,
I'm so impressed with how you help everyone solve their problems. I will do my best here, but my husband will be home soon and knows how this large external is formatted.
How late do you all work there? I'm on east coast. Is the screen shot you wanted? I opened up external and
    this is what I see.
Drive is connected to usb in back of computer. N

  • How can I get Time Machine to back up an external hard drive (iPhotos) that is attached to airport extreme base station. Note: Time machine is usb to macbook pro and external drive with iphotos is usb to airport extreme base station. Help please. Thanks!

Once you have the drive connected to your Mac, click System Preferences (gear icon) on the dock
    Click Time Machine
    Click Options
Be default, the hard drive will be Excluded from backups. Click the drive to highlight it, then click the "-" (minus) button at the bottom of the list to remove the drive from Excluded items.
The drive will be backed up on the next Time Machine pass
Everything above assumes that the hard drive has been formatted in Mac OS Extended (Journaled) as Time Machine will only backup drives in that format.

  • System recognizes external drive but does not eject disk

I connected external DVD drive to imac and clicked on 'Eject Remote Disk' from File. Nothing happened.

  • USB 2.0 port no longer recognizes ext. HD; USB 3.0 seems fine W510

Have had several BSODs in last few days. Two of most recent referred to nusb3xhc.sys
Other symptoms: I have 3 WesternDigital 500GB ext. USB 2.0 HDs none of which are being recognized even when plugging directly in to laptop USB port rather than USB hub I usually use. Same USB port will show a small thumb drive. USB 3.0 laptop port still works. While the WD HDs are all older, worked several days ago but now never show up in Windows Explorer and the tray icon for USB never shows them as I typically click on the latter to eject an ext. USB HD.
    Recent changes to laptop:
    1) 6.1.2014 installed MS OneDrive (and also on tablet). version 17.0.4041.0512
    2) Control Panel add/remove programs shows that Dropbox installed version 2.8.2 just before OneDrive
    3) Subsequent to above I did routine Windows update of Important items with no problems. However for several years since about IE 9 or perhaps 10, I have been unable to get IE to install and work, and have been using Chrome for years. I mention this to give fuller picture, but doubt that it is related to current issue.
    4) Aside from typical routine updates e.g. Java, Bitdefender antivirus I have not intentionally installed any other software recently.
    ============
I have barely begun using MS OneDrive so am happy to uninstall it, or go to restore point prior to its installation. BSOD prior to this might have occurred 1 or 2x per year.
I'm pretty good at following directions if they are complete e.g. need full path if you want me to find something on my HD.
Lenovo website for machine type 4318CTO running Windows 7 Pro 64-bit indicates that driver version for USB 3.0 dated 1/22/2010 versin 1.0.19.0 is up to date and that it is NEC device. Device Manager also says is up to date. There is one USB 3.0 port on rear of laptop and two USB 2.0 on side. HP website shows more recent NEC USB 3.0 driver dated 9/16/2011 version 2.0.32.0
Thanks for your knowledge, skill, and help.

I always thought that high-speed USB was USB 1.1. I thought that USB 2.0 was full-speed. But my iMac Core 2 Duo has USB 2.0 (I'm sure) and it says that my iMac has a USB High-speed bus.
Your PowerBook G4 might need service, go to your local Apple Store and see someone there about it. I'm pretty sure that you have a hardware problem.
    Steps:
    1. Try connecting another USB 2.0 device to that same port. If the device works you have a problem with your iPod. (This is a long shot.) If this happens you should reinstall iPod software.
    2. Try reinstalling iTunes.
    3. Try calling AppleCare technical support.
    4. Try reinstalling Mac OS X. (If AppleCare hasn't told you do this already.)
    5. You have a hardware problem. Go to an Apple Store to get it fixed.
