HP MediaSmart crashing to desktop when attempting Bluray playback
Hello all,
I've been trying to get the movie Coraline to play in an HP Envy 17 1181nr to no luck. MediaSmart DVD reads the menu, then the FBI warnings, then the Universal intro in all Universal movies - and then crashes to the desktop.
By the way, it's the only bluray movie I've tried on a brand new system (the computer is days old), and it's the only one I have handy at the moment.
The error I get in MediaSmart says:
HP DVD Smart Main has stopped working. A problem caused this program to stop working. Windows is checking for a solution... etc. (close program dialog box).
I tried installing PowerDVD 10, and had the exact same error: a crash to the desktop, this time, with no error message.
Any ideas as to what might be causing this?

Also: just an observation, but I read somewhere on this board that some movies just don't play (like Spiderman 3). Is that true, and if it is, why? Shouldn't a player simply play?
EDIT: I read here: http://h30434.www3.hp.com/t5/Notebook-TV-Tuners-and-Media/HP-Mediasmart-DVD-failure/td-p/307260/page... about a possible issue with Windows 7 update KB234886 and MediaSmart DVD failure. I checked for installed updates and I have it on my system. Should I uninstall it?
From what I read, this is a security update for the Server service. Also, I do not have Comodo firewall installed.
EDIT2: Doing more research, I find it's definately some incompatibility or problem with Cyberlink's software, as I can open the .m2t files in VLC player just fine.

Thanks for the links. It does seem that Cyberlinks Blu ray software is very sensitive to other software and drivers that may be on the PC and the list of things that break its functionality is ever-growing. Why this should be, when other companies such as ArcSoft seem to be able to produce Blu ray software that just works would seem to indicate that the Cyberlink software is just not very well written.
Regarding your issue with MediaSmart DVD, the next thing that may be worth trying is uninstalling and then reinstalling the graphics driver for you PC, which is on the link below.

IE crashes to desktop when attempting to display forms on OAS
This is on a server running Windows 2003 server SP2:
- Install OAS 10g R2 (Infrastructure + Forms/Reports)
- From the OAS server, start IE and enter the URL to call the formservlet to display the test.fmx form
- IE crashes to desktop
- Attempting to access the Jinitiator console via Control panel --> Jinitiator does not work
- Attempting to uninstall Jinitiator via Control panel --> Add/Remove programs does not work
- Only affects IE on the OAS server. From other machines, using IE to access the formservlet to display the test.fmx form works perfectly
We have come across this problem once before on another server, which we solved by adding the Jinitator x.x.x\bin folder to the PATH environment variable. However, this time, this solution does not work.
Any clues?

We managed to get Jinitiator working thanks to an email from Rolf Weilenmann and thought we would share it.
Apparently Windows 2003 server SP2 Data Execution Prevention (DEP) thinks java is a dangerous piece of code and blocks execution which is why:
- IE closes immediately upon trying to run the Jinitiator plug in (with no error message and nothing in the server logs either)
- Jinitiator console cannot be started
- Jinitiator cannot be uninstalled using Add/Remove programs
The solution sent by Rolf which we used and found working was to exclude java.exe from the Data Execution Prevention:
1. Go into Control Panel --> System --> Advanced --> Performance --> Settings --> Data Execution Prevention.
2. Select "Turn on DEP for all programs and services except those I select".
3. Browse to \program files\oracle\jinitiator 1.3.1.28\bin (or whichever version of Jinitiator is installed) and add java.exe to the list.
If more than 1 version of Jinitiator is installed, pick the one that is used by the Forms server (Check <oraclehome>forms\server\formsweb.cfg for parameters prefixed by jinit*) -
Y do I have a Green screen when attempting 2 playback downloaded podcast???
Why do I have a green screen when attempting to playback my downloaded Podcast?
1. I can still download the podcast into Itunes
2. I can still here the audio with no problems
3. The primary issue is that I can not see the video footage, only a green hue.
If you have a rememdy for this issue, please assist with the quick fix.

KtI am not sure about podcasts, but for similar symptoms playing videos - try disabling Direct3D acceleration in Quicktime.

ITunes 11 crashes to desktop when accessing Books/pdf section
Recently, I had to restore my iTunes directory after an unsuccesful move to a NAS. I completely restored my iTunes folder to the one that was there two weeks before. Everything works well, except for one (big) error: when I select "Books" and then look at the PDF page, iTunes crashes back to the desktop. After this, iTunes crashes even after pointing at "Books". Same story when I touch the iTunes/Books tab on my iPod 5th gen of iPad2 when they are connected. Synchronization is not an issue.
I restored the whole folder again, and found that Books was working with all subtabs except for PDF. Touching this tab made the folder build up previews until about 80% of the way, then crashes to desktop. Going back to this page after a restart cause an immediate CTD.
I strongly suspect one of the PDF files to cause this issue, but have not way of finding out which one is the culprit.
What can I do to fix this problem?
iTunes 11, iMac with OS X Mountain Lion, iPad + iPod Touch, both OS6I browsed around in this forum a lot, and solved this problem on my own.
First, I deleted Flip4Mac, which did not help. Then I looked at all PDF's which started with an "A", as this happened to appear on my screen where the crash happened. I then check my iTunes/Books folder and noticed that some files had duplicates (i.e. had a '1' behind their file name). I deleted these double ones and restarted iTunes.
This did the trick!! -
Crash to desktop when loading embedded swf
I have a swf that loads two other embedded swfs. The need for an air native extension came up so I've wrapped this swf inside of an AIR app. I install my app as a native installer. (on Windows 7)
My app has a main menu screen and two buttons that will load two separate swfs to do their own menus and actions.
Everything has worked great, until I tried to install the AIR app on a computer without internet. I ran the air redistributable, then installed my app. The main menu runs fine, and the main swf can load one of the embedded swfs, but when it tries to load the second embedded swf it crashes to desktop. No warnings, no errors, I just see desktop after clicking a button.
Here is how I'm loading the offending swf:

I load the other swf in the exact same way.
This problem can be fixed by connecting the computer to internet and trying to run the same actions. The program will pause for a second, during this time I see a visible loading icon in the middle of the screen, then it successfully loads the swf and everything works fine.
My problem is that I can't guarantee our clients will have internet at all, so I need a solution to install AIR without internet and include whatever it is that my app needs to run.
Any ideas? 'Cause this one's had me stumped for quite awhile.Does this happen whith every subVI or just on particular one? Also, what version of LV and OS?

Safari 5.1 crashes with Lion when attempting to print
Since updating to Lion, Safari 5.1 has become very unstable. It crashes periodically for no observable reason. However, it always crashes when I try to print anything from Safare.

Follow the paths you see above. Move the files in bold print to the Desktop.

Move the cache.db file from the com.apple.Safari folder to the Trash.
~ (Tilde) represents the Home folder.
For LIon: To find the Home folder in OS X Lion, open the Finder, hold the Option key, and choose Go > Library
Restart your Mac. Try Safari.
Check here http://growl.info/ for Lion compatible updates.
As for the other Safari add ons, move one set of files back to the original folder, quit then relaunch Safari to test. -
Adobe crashes to desktop when I try to create a PDF from a Word document.
The PDF does end up getting created, but not before crashing my Adobe to my desktop, or even crashing it to the background so I have to kill Adobe in the task manager in order to get it to start again. The progress bar used to fill up faster when it was working correctly, but now, the progress bar just slowly fills up under "Reading PDF Document" and then freezes.
I'm running Windows 7 Pro x64 on a Thinkpad T620.
Please help!It's 9.4.
We are having multiple issues crop up on this system. Its MS Office and antivirus are both unstable, and a SQL server update has failed, so I am beginning to suspect that this issue may be a symptom of a bigger problem. -
PS CS4 crashes to desktop when "save as.." selected
HI,
I am running Win XP with SP3 and latest updates. Sony Vaio laptop with 2 gig ram, 320 gig hard drive, more than 200gig available. Photoshop CS4 with all the latest updates as of 6/2009. If I start up Photoshop and open a file and edit it, all works fine. If I then click on "Save as" from the file menu, it dumps me straight to the desktop, all is lost, no error message, no hesitation, nothing. Once I got it give an error on the "ole32.dll" and the applicaiton wanted to close. If I start it up and edit a new file, click on "Save" rather than "Save as" it works fine, and from then on I can use "Save as" with no problems. If I bring up a file using Lightroom and then edit in Photoshop it works fine. Only when Photoshop is brought up by itself and only if I hit "Save as" before doing a "Save" and it crashes all the time. If I save a dummy file, it works fine. I have reinstalled Photoshop twice, same result. I have no issues with any other programs, just Photoshop.
Any suggestions?

corrected typo on headerSounds more like a generic MRU (most recently used) list issue. Seems to me, the Save as... is trying to access a location that is no longer there, hidden, or blocked. Those are all stored in your Registry, so choose Run from the start menu, type in regedit and search the MRU keys. Also try CCleaner, it also offers to clean out MRUs, it just doesn't always catch all.

ITunes crashes / errors out when attempting to get Outlook 2003 contacts
OS: XP Pro SP2
APPS: Office Pro 2003 SP2, iTunes v.6.0.4.2
Hardware: iPod Nano 2GB
Problem: When I sync my ipod nano, iTunes opens, the music syncs and then I get an error:
“iTunes cannot copy contacts to the iPod ‘my name’”
Probable Cause: I installed from MSN Premium something called “Outlook Connector” I was going to use to synch my MSN Hotmail & my Outlook contacts. I believe it was after this install when I began having trouble with synching my contacts between my iPod Nano and Outlook 2003 SP2 for windows.
Solutions I have tried:
- Repaired Outlook using “Detect & Repair” as well as scanpst.exe
- Cleaned the registry
- Restored an older backup PST Outlook file
- Talked with MSN support who referred my to iTunes support
- Purchased Apple Care program (or something)
- Update iPod (wasn’t needed)
- Uninstalled/Reinstalled iTunes
- Scoured google, these forums, newsbin, ms kb, etc…
- The last thing I will do is to restore my whole hard drive to an time when my ipod did synch fine
Please help if you can. I really think this has to do with that MSN Outlook Connector, but I have removed all known traces of it. I wanted to make sure I to get an answer and posted this in both the nano as well as itunes for Windows forums, my apologies if that’s taboo.

For those who it may help, I went into:
Outlook 2003 > Tools > Address Book
From there I saw theat Outlook Connector (or soemething) created a new address book for my MSN/Hotmail and made that address book the default one.
I simly made my old one the default and ipod now synchs with the Outlook contacts. -
Mini crashes and restarts when attempting to play songs
Hi, I just received this refurb 4gb mini(from the online apple store) and I was able to install eveything ok... but...after I loaded some songs onto it and went to play them, the darn thing crashes and goes back to the apple logo and reloads itself... I've gone through all of the troubleshooting and have updated iTunes and my iPod, tried restoring etc. and same problem. I just select a song and sometimes it will freeze on that song and it has to be reset. I've tried using songs that I ripped from cds freshly with iTunes and other that I've had on my computer(ripped from windows in mp3 format). The songs are all stereo and 44.1kHz
Any suggestions before I send it back?

Mail is crashing to desktop when checking mail.
I've looked throughout the forum at the various posts regarding this. I've even gone as far as trying to reinstall the Mail.app from the "receipts" folder. It will not even let me reinstall the app due to an "error" on install. Everything was fine PRIOR to the the last 10.4.5 upgrade. Is this a bug? Is there something I can do to make this work?

Welcome to the Discussions.
Open the Applications folder, and Control-click over the Mail icon, and use Get Info. What version is reported?
There was no update to Mail in either 10.4.4 or 10.4.5. However, it seems something has gone awry during an update. How are you connected to the internet -- do you have broadband? If so, it may be a good idea to download the latest Combo Update, and install over the current system.

My daughter's Ipod 7th generation -- which she just got for Christmas -- has no sound when playing back her music and also has no radio reception. Tried different headphones and resetting the Ipod -- no difference. I was working fine Christmas and the day after. HELP!

As the title states, when using Acrobat 11.0.07 it crashes when i attempt to fill in forms. when i click on a form field to fill it in, it crashes to desktop.
I am having the same problem... It just started. Can anyone help with this issue??

Adobe Applications Manage rin Yosemite Kaput. Advisor directs me here. Another Adobe Run-around. CS5 Extended still crashing with Eyedropper when moved to desktop.
I'm sorry to report that I've not yet figured out how to go about this 'Cleaning'. I've run the cleaner on the Applications Manager, then attempted to reinstall the downloaded Applications Manager and again I get the same message as above. I attempted to trash the Applications Folder and rerun the installer. That did not work. I then moved the downloaded Applications folder to the utilities folder and restarted CS5>Updates. It reports, again it can't find/or is damaged Applications Manager. I will now take the folder out of the trash and return it to the Utilities folder.
If I run the Recovery tool on Photoshop will I uninstall Photoshop or will it only 'clean' it. Does it mean I will lose any third party plugins?
I do thank you for your continued support. This is the first time a requested answer/suggestion to my troubles has been promptly be addressed by 'Adobe'. I am also pleased I can reply to an email to aid in resolving questions.

ITunes 11 Crashes When Attempting to Sync Podcasts
My two computers, a Mini and a MacBook both run Snow Leopard (10.6.8) so I can continue to use Photoshop CS3. I made the horrible mistake of "upgrading" to iTunes 11.1.1 at Apple's suggestion. While I agree with many of the aesthetic and functional complaints I've read on this forum, my issue is more serious. When I attempt to sync new podcasts iTunes immediately crashes. Specifically when I attach any of my four functioning iPods, ranging from 3rd Gen to 7th, the device comes up on the File page, the Summary page opens correctly and so does Music. But when I select Podcasts I immediately get the dreaded spinning beach ball of death and iTunes in my open Force Quit window turns red. Force quit is the only way out. I've "upgraded" to 11.1.2 and now 11.1.3 with the same results. I have sent in dozens of crash reports to Apple and have written the iTunes guy at MacWorld with no response from either. My crash reports are no longer polite though I'm aware the person reading the reports is not responsible for releasing this buggy mess.
I have Time Machine and was able to install an older version of the application,10.6, but was unable to regress the iTunes library so now the app is incompatible with the library which is apparently permanently changed, even with Time Machine. Installing 11 also wiped out 6 years of carefully archived podcasts, many of which are no longer available at the iTunes Store.
Any suggestions are welcome. If I absolutely have to I guess I'd be willing to install Mavericks on the MacBook if I knew that would solve the iTunes issues but I resent that I have to do so. I have been a loyal Mac fan since 1984 but now that Apple is fat and happy it looks like it's going to replace Microsoft as the company with the black hat.As I said that was a Test.
Now we know that iPhoto is sound, as is the Phone, it's the other Library that's damaged.
Option 1
Back Up and try rebuild the library: hold down the command and option (or alt) keys while launching iPhoto. Use the resulting dialogue to rebuild. Choose to Rebuild iPhoto Library Database from automatic backup.
If that fails:
Option 2
Download iPhoto Library Manager and use its rebuild function. This will create a new library based on data in the albumdata.xml file. Not everything will be brought over - no slideshows, books or calendars, for instance - but it should get all your albums and keywords, faces and places back.
Because this process creates an entirely new library and leaves your old one untouched, it is non-destructive, and if you're not happy with the results you can simply return to your old one.
However : Library Manager has not been fully updated to work with 11 yet. So, best to wait until Wednesday (when the release is due) to do this step.
