HP mini 1000 windows XP

I'm happy with my HP Mini1000; however, I have been told that the operating system- Windows XP- will be off the market and extinct soon. Does anyone have any info on this, and if this is true, what are the options for replacing XP with sthg else? TY

Support for Windows XP is ending on April 8, 2014. This means no more security updates. The Mini will run Windows 7. If you have one gig of RAM, which is adequate for XP, it will not be adequate for Windows 7. You need 2 gigs, which is your maximimum. Also even Windows 7 is getting difficult to find and you will have to buy it somewhere. With the memory upgrade and the cost of even the least expensive Windows 7 you might want to consider a new tablet type PC.
You can also just keep using XP. It will not die. If you keep an antivirus program up to date you are probably going to be OK.

  • HP Mini 1000, Windows 7, trackpad not working

    Hi all,
I decided to format my Mini this morning to install a legal OEM copy of Win7 Pro. The first thing I noticed was there was no mouse cursor during the installation - not a big deal because I used a USB mouse. However, in Windows, the trackpad was still not recognized with the base level of drivers.
I've discovered that others have used the Synaptics driver for Vista on Win7 RC. Even though I'm using the final version, this doesn't work for me! I see a Synaptics tab in mouse settings, but there is no listed trackpad hardware. There are no relevant Windows updates either. I've also tried the Synaptics driver for WinXP from HP, but the same thing happens.
Has anybody had any experience with this? Any help would be greatly appreciated.
    Thanks!

  • Microphone does not function after installing Windows 7 RC on a HP Mini 1000 (1030NR)

Hi. I recently purchased a HP Mini 1000 (1030NR) and upgraded it to Windows 7 Release Canidate. After install, I added the trackpad drivers, and everything else works fine except for the microphone. The computer recognizes it but when I speak nothing happens. The volume is turned up, and if I turn up the Mic Boost, all I hear is static. I have installed what I think are the correct drivers from another poster, to no avail. Also, there are no errors in the device manager. ANy ideas?
    Thank you in advance.

As a tempory measure search for SP40662 this package will enable the mic but there is a catch (isnt there always). The catch is that the mic is going to be recognized as the external one and if you plug in headphones you will have to reboot the mini to use the internal mic again. Im using the same set up right now and it works fairly well. Just hope that HP decides to bestow upon us the proper drivers for the mini soon.

  • HP Mini 1000 - Solid State HD Constantly Thrashing - Slowing System Down

I recently bought an HP Mini 1000 (the actual model number is the 1100 CTO).  It came with the HP flavor of Linux.  I put the Windows 7 RC on it, as several others have, and noticed incredibly poor performance with the 32GB solid state hard disk.
The symptoms are whenever the disk starts to write, the system is completely unresponsive.  I cannot scroll down on browser windows, I cannot launch new processes, I cannot switch tabs, keyboard input is not recognized (until the hard disk stops writing).  This happens way too frequently, pretty much any time I load a web browser page or do anything on the system.  The hard drive thrashes about 80% of the time that I'm using it.
I have the upgraded 2GB of memory, so I'm not sure why there are so many disk writes going on.  I am also not sure why disk writes are taking so long to complete... I thought disk speed was supposed to be faster on a solid-state drive.
I've done numerous things to improve performance:  ensuring superfetch and all indexing operations are disabled, turned off the page file,  etc.  However I still cannot get the system to perform to a point where it is usable, and am seriously considering sending it back and having the regular disk put in it.
Is there anything I can do?

XP Home SP3 (32-bit).  Machine is still basically a fresh install, essentially as shipped, with Windows and Norton patches. Swap file is off since it seems like a bad idea for SSD-based systems in general.  I also eased some of the graphics settings (like displaying window contents when moving windows) since that's more eye candy than necessary.
HP's tech suggested checking for bad blocks.  Doesn't seem to have helped.  My intention in getting the machine was to configure a dual-boot with a yet-to-be-determined linux distro (I'm running Ubuntu 9.04 on the dying P3 laptop I'm using to write this -- so, yes, I'm finding a 2001 vintage consumer-grade laptop preferable to our new Mini 1000s...).
Performance may actually improve after being on for 30 minutes to an hour.   Perhaps Windows has begun to cache things in RAM as it should.  That doesn't really work for a netbook, though, since the whole point is availability when you need it.
I wonder if these SSDs have the notorious jmicron controller.  I'm not sure how to check.  Supposedly if you have XP professional or embedded you can use a module called Enhanced Write Filtering (EWF) as a sort of buffer.  It isn't shown in the Windows XP Home help menu, though, so it might not be included.

  • HP Mini 1000 Netbook Lost / Forgotten Bios Password

I have inherited an HP Mini 1000. I would very much like to access it to get my lost one's files. The battery looks a bit swollen, but it doesn't look like it's has hard use. It is XP.
The Bios, not the WIndows login screen comes up and asks for the password. I have no idea, and can't possibly recover it.

After you tap f10 to access the bios menu, enter the code from my first post to gain access to the bios menu - you can then use the method I described to remove the power-on password.

  • HP Mini 1000 Internal Mic in Vista

I installed Windows Vista on my HP Mini 1035NR but it looks like the internal microphone is not working. Are there any plans to make Vista drivers available?
    Thanks in advance!

I have a HP Mini 1033CL and just installed the release candidate of Windows 7 Build 7100.  Installation seemed to detect audio just fine, but as with previous posters, my microphone didn't work.  Additionally, the webcam would only display a black screen in Skype.
I did some digging around and found a solution.  The hardware id for the HD Audio Controller on the Mini 1033CL (made by IDT) is: HDAUDIO\FUNC_01&VEN_111D&DEV_7608&SUBSYS_103C361A
I'm not sure if this is the same on the Mini 1000 or later models, but you can find your hardware id by going into device manager and getting to details on the properties of the audio controller.
I found this thread dslreports.com which provides links to audio controller drivers based on hardware id.
In this post, there is a link to HP driver package (intended for Notebooks) that had driver that included the hardware ID of the audio controller on my Mini 1033.
I ran the installer on my Windows 7 Mini 1033CL.  While it errored at the end of the installation, I rebooted my netbook, and the updated drivers were successfully installed.  I was going to attempt manually updating the drivers via device manager, but realized that the drivers had successfully installed despite the error.  To my delight, the external microphone now works!  Additionally, the webcam is now working and successfully capturing video in skype!
Hopefully, you will have the same success with this.
