HP Mini 5102 revival: Replacement HD and No CD Drive

HP Mini 5102 revival: Replacement HD and No CD Drive
The hard drive on my HP Mini 5102 Notebook went bad and I purchased a new one.  I am trying to reinstall the Win 7 32-bit Home Premium OS and I have the HP Recovery CD that came with the notebook. Unfortunately, my notebook does not have a CD drive.
I have replaced the broken 160GB Drive with a 320GB drive and need to know the steps to bring my notebook back to life.  I am afraid to simply turn it on with no software... what would happen if I did, would it recognize and allow me to format the hard drive? Any suggestions as  how I should partition the new larger drive? Can anyone shed some light on this?  Thanks!  Mark

Hi, Mark:
All you need to do is to purchase an external DVD drive for $30.00 and boot from that.
If you turn your notebook on, it will just give an OS not found error, or some such error. You won't hurt it, but you can't format it or anything either because you have no OS to input commands. You at least need to have DOS for that.
There are ways to load W7 using a USB flash drive, but I am unfamilar with those. Google it if you want to try that route first.
Me?  I'd go out and pick up a external DVD drive. You can use it anyway.

  • Mac Mini has crashed - Disk Warrior and External Hard Drive Question.

I have Mac Mini that has crashed.  I purchased Disk Warrior and was able to boot from the CD.  Disk Warrior allowed me to see my files again but there is no way I can move them back onto my hard drive.  I cannot grab them.  Before I go into specifics....If I purchase an external hard drive and try to hook it up to my Mac Mini, will I be able move these files to this new external hard drive?  Is this a possibility?
Or will my new external hard drive need to go through a set up phase - which might be impossible since hard drive I'm trying to take the files from is technically dead?
Sorry - I'm a novice at these things.

Hello, no apologies needed for being a novice, great you asked!
YES, depends where you buy the Drive, it may need Formatting first to Mac OS Extended...
    How to format your disks...
    http://www.kenstone.net/fcp_homepage/partitioning_tiger.html
(To Install OSX on an IntelMac the Drive it needs the GUID Partitioning scheme mentioned at the bottom.)
Thanks to Pondini, Formatting,  Partitioning, Verifying,  and  Repairing  Disks...
    http://Pondini.org/OSX/DU.html
These generally come Mac Ready, & get Firewire if you have a Firewire port, much faster...
    http://eshop.macsales.com/shop/firewire/1394/USB/EliteAL/eSATA_FW800_FW400_USB
Then in DiskWarrior, hold Option or alt key when selecting Internal to repair, that will do the best job of Scavenging the directory & provide a whole new Drive icon to copy or clone your info over to the external drive.

No. Damage caused by the user is not covered by warranty. A replacement iPad mini is $219 for the 1st generation, or $249 for the iPad mini with Retina display.

Apple's Limited Warranty http://www.apple.com/legal/warranty/ for iPad excludes coverage for damage resulting from accident, disassembly, unauthorized service and unauthorized modifications.
The warranty will apply to the country of purchase. And if there is a problem needing repair you have to return it to the country of purchase.

(The replacement will most likely be a refurbished iPad in a brown box, however, it has a new screen, back and battery.)

  • Mini DisplayPort to DVI Adapter and macbook pro

I have a 2010 macbook pro 13", samsung 20" LED display connected via mini display port. The setup has been fine for a few months but occasionally both displays would turn blue as it tries to detect itself(I assume) when this happened I would just need to reset to fix itself. This week I used my laptop away from the screen for a while, once I connected it to the display the blue screen has become more prominent, it would blank out for no reason intermittently and has become progressively worse. I've tried shutting down, cleaning the mini-display-port, resetting PRAM and now I'm out of ideas.
Could it be related to the new EFI firmware update v2.5? that was the last major update installed.

You might be better off taking the computer and the display into a Apple Genius Bar annd showing them what is happening.
They may have a fix or maybe something needs to be replaced.

  • My ipad mini was just replaced , any way to recover photos?

I bought an ipad mini for my wife. For some unknown reason it simply went bad. Apple just sent a replacement. Needless to say all her photos are gone. My ipad is backed up on my iMac , I thought hers was too through iCloud. I can't locate her mini on the iMac. Did my lack of knowledge cost her all her pics or can they be found somewhere? Thanks!!

First make sure the replacement iPad is running the same or higher version of iOS as the old one.  (If you aren't sure what version of iOS it's running you can check by going to Settings>General>About>Version.)  If it isn't, you'll need to update it first.  Then, to restore the iCloud backup you need to start by erasing the iPad Mini.  If you have any newer data on it that is not contained in the backup you'll need to save that first.  When you're ready, go to Settings>General>Reset, tap Erase All Content and Settings, then go through the setup screens on the iPad Mini and when given the option, choose Restore from iCloud Backup and follow the prompts, choosing the backup of the old iPad Mini to restore from.
Be sure the iPad Mini is connected to wifi and your charger while it is restoring the backup.

  • Hard Drive Replacement and Bootable External Drive

    Hello All,
I've got a Ti-Book (late 2002) with the original Fujitsu 60 gig HD that's out of room. My thoughts are to replace it with the popular Hitachi Travelstar ATA 160 gig HD that most people seem to like. My question is about partitioning an already partially full 250 gig G-Drive (G Technology, Inc.) with about 100 gigs of space left, and making it bootable. My thoughts are that I'd like to clone (using Carbon Copy Cloner) my current 60 gig HD onto that G-Drive if that's possible and how? Is it possible to make it bootable without fear of erasing the current information on the G-Drive?
My other thought is to buy an enclosure (most people like the Macally PHR-250cc) and put the old 60 gig HD into that, and cloning it back to the new Hitachi 160 gig HD when it's installed in my Ti-Book. I suppose my fear makes me want to transfer my 60 gig HD info first to an external source before pulling it out of the machine. I hope I'm not too paranoid about this.
Any words of advice are most welcomed.
    Thanks,
    Jack

It sounds like your Mini is no longer under warranty.
    I'd consider either this service:
    http://eshop.macsales.com/shop/mac-mini/install/
or getting an external firewire hard drive and using it as your startup drive. The external drive could even be a much larger and faster 3.5 inch model, or a bus-powered 2.5 inch portable.

iphone 4 has no service after replacing screen and updating, phone company says sim is fine. any ideas? thanks

We had this happen with a ipad mini, took it back to person who worked on it, after a week with trying to get it working again, he replaced it. I will agree with the other replies take it back to repair place there must be something inside the phone that if you don't do repair excalty right it messes up all phone functions. Also I would give the repair person a time frame to either get it working or replace it.

You won't need a plug adapter if you buy a figure-of-eight mains lead (like most portable radios etc) with a UK plugtop to replace the original lead.

  • Apple Mini-DVI to Video Adapter and Mac mini (2009)

Can anyone tell me whether the Apple Mini-DVI to Video Adapter listed here:
    http://store.apple.com/ca/product/M9319G/A
works with the latest Mac mini (early 2009)?
If it does not what other solutions are there to connect to composite, component or s-video?

    KC from Ann Arbor, MI had this to say as a review on the page to which you have linked;
    10-May-2009
I bought a Mac Mini (May 2009) and this Mini-DVI to Video adapter with plans to use it to send an S-video signal to an analog TV. Though the sales staff at the Apple store said it should work, it does not. The graphics card apparently should support it, and it may be addressed with a future driver update, but as of now this does not work. I have used a mini-DVI to VGA adapter and monitor to verify that the port is working, and also verified that the S-video cable and TV input work. There are third party VGA to S-video/RCA adapters available so I plan to use one of those for my purposes. This is probably a 5-star product when used with the right Mac; however, Apple should have made it clear that having a mini-DVI port on your Mac is necessary but not sufficient for this to work - hence the 3 stars.

  • Message comes up on startup: You are unable to log in to the user account "terry" at this time. Logging in to the account failed because an error occurred.  This is a late 2012 mac mini with a 64g SSD and 1 Gig hard drive installed.  Help please!

As in title.  I have tried resetting the password. Nothing works to get me past this problem.  The computer was working fine before this happened.

I have just purchased this mini and it was wiped to a virtual new unit.  I have done an install of the OS up to 10.9.5 and then installed my purchased software that is stored on iTunes through wifi.  The computer was working fine although sometimes a bit slow.  I have it set up with the SSD as the program drive and the 1T drive for data which I have no files on it yet.  I am the only account on the computer so cannot log in on another account.  I booted up holding the Alt key and then used the restore drive which brought up the Utilities window.  I then opened Terminal and typed in "resetpassword" and then closed out and restarted the computer.  It seems to recognize my new password but still gives me the same message as above.
I do have an Apple OS system 10.7 on USB if that needs to be used to reinstall the OS to fix the problem. Thanks for taking the time to help me with this problem.
