HP mini notebook

I have a HP mini with windows 7. It suddenly came on screen with a message " windows error recovery' have tried everything. HELP!!! This is my daughter notebook that she got for Christmas and she really loves it!!

Hi,
Shut down the notebook.  Tap away at the esc key as you start the notebook to enter the Start-up Menu.  Select the Bios option ( usually f10 ) and under the Advanced or Diagnostic tab you should find the facility to run tests on both the Hard Drive and Memory.  Post back with the details of any error messages.
Note:  If the option to run these tests is not available in the Bios Menu, use the f2 diagnostic menu instead.
Can you also post back with the full Model No. and Product No. of your notebook - see Here for a guide on locating this information.
Regards,
DP-K

  • Adding programs to mini notebook NB505-N508?

This is a novice question, but I was hoping someone could confirm.
Can this mini notebook run Quicken?  I have an external CD-ROM drive for installation, and the specifications for this computer seem to match what is required from Quicken.
My concern is that this computer seems to be for web surfing and such.  I just wanted to confirm it could also run software programs.  Quicken is the only program I need to run, and the only thing I will use this computer for.
    Thanks in advance!

Can this mini notebook run Quicken?
Sure, Michelle. You'll find it can use most any programs that are compatible with Windows 7.
If it's a little slow, you can double the memory (from 1 to 2 GB).

  • Ipad / mini notebook

    Hi all,
I recently came across the coffee corner forum and find it interesting, so started going through the discussions whenever i find time at my coffee break.
I just wanted to know your openion about what I have specified in the subject line.
As many of you might travel becasue of your work or vacation, what do you think the better option to watch films / surfing internet while travelling ? it should be like easy to carry, so i find two possibilities one is Ipad, other one is sleek, tiny notebook (11 inches i guess)
    any inputs?
    Have a nice coffee day
    Sats

As a person who grew up with black and white TV received via rabbit ear antennas when contrasting them to today's large format HDTVs, I can tell you there is no comparison. In fact, with my larger sets (36 inch and 55 inch), I find it almost annoying to watch the non-HDTV channels as the resolution is so bad. You don't notice it as much on the smaller sets like 22 inches or smaller, but the image is quite blurry on the larger sets. Luckily, Verizon Fios has lots of HD versions of the major network channels and subscription channels.
As to the original question, I would go with the mini notebook. I like the size, have no problem with the keyboard - in fact I like it better as the keys are not as far recessed as on full size ones with touchpads, and I can read the screen provided I have my old man bifocals on. When my wife's Dell died (don't get me started on that), I tried to talk her in to getting one but she complained about the screen size. We tried out several. I liked the little Sony Vaio best (even came in pink which I tried to point out to her as an advantage).
The ipad is getting a lot of publicity (in SAP as well) but seems mostly useful for people who want to hold on to a device while making a presentation. They aren't tied to a podium with a laptop and can read and respond to feedback channels set up live during the presentation. That is likely not to be as easy even with a mini notebook.
It really depends on what you need to do. I don't do live presenations and found the Ipad sort of annoying in terms of having to switch around the keyboard and display. I have a Mac Powerbook and found it to be a lot more intuitive in terms of operation than the Ipad. I suppose I could force myself to get used to the Ipad if someone was to give me one as a present

  • HATE MINI-NOTEBOOK 505

cursor jumps all over the place, ruins what i've typed already by jumping up/down/sideways, page moves up/down all over page and is chaotic to use; get a horizontal bar on curson which i can't use, don't know what it's supposed to do - screen space so small that i can't get down to bottom of some screens to hit OK button to continue - got it for college classes - useless because screen moves all over the  place - does Toshiba even have a tutorial on how to work this GD thing???

I can definitely understand your frustration, especially when moving from a regular keyboard and mouse to this tiny "NetBook".  I just got mine two days ago and am still getting used to the keyboard, but I think it will become second nature after using it for another month or two.  Regarding your cursor jumping around everywhere it could be that you are inadvertently touching the pad with the bottom or the palms of your hands.  But this can easily be fixed.  The main issue I was struggling with at first was the fact that the "scroll area" space on the touchpad, IMHO (of course!) was really more than twice the size on both the bottom and right side of the pad then I would prefer it to be.
The two issues mentioned above can both be resolved through the touchpad software that is pre-installed on the laptop, or at least it was on my 505.  There are several different ways to access the settings for the touchpad but this method will work for the majority of users, since we all like to customize our systems.  Open control panel, click to sort by large or small icon, I use small, open mouse.  Now you are under the settings page for your mouse (touchpad), in order to fully control all of the touchpad settings you must select the last tab with the red icon on it.   For some users it may not be the last tab so just find the tab with the red icon and the tab is labeled "Device Settings".  Once at this tab, make sure the Synaptics option is selected in the first box, then click "Settings".
This takes you to the Synaptics settings menu where you can change almost every aspect of your touchpad.  I just got my NB505 so my drivers are most likely current, if you are running an older system you might want to consider upgrading the drivers since new features are added by the manufacturer all of the time.  The primary settings that helped me were 1. reducing the size of the area on the bottom and right side of the touchpad that is dedicated to the scrolling function rather than navigating the cursor.  I just looked and the setting is referred to as the "scrolling region".
Another common problem is accidentally touching the touchpad with the palms or other part of the hand while using the keyboard.  To be on the safe side I lowered the sensitivity by one setting.  I actually did this by moving the slider over to the right by one mark.  The setting is labeled Palm Check under Pointing-->Sensitivity.  I would recommend going to each setting, get an understanding of exactly what it does either by reading the description or watching the video, then make adjustments as necessary.  Depending on how familiar you are with adjusting a trackpad you might want to only make one or two adjustments at a time and then test.  In addition you might want to gradually increase/decrease the setting rather than making major changes since a slight change may be all that you need.  Do not worry about breaking anything,  you can always click the "default" button which will reset everything back to the default settings.  Good luck and I hope this helps even one person, because this laptop is extremely functional once you get it customized to suit your own style of use.  Good luck to everyone struggling with what would appear to be a pointer with a mind of its own, even though computers only do what they are asked to do by the user or programmed to do by the developer.
If you are still having problems or are unable to find or properly tweak these settings, please reply to this thread so that myself or someone else can assist further.  Unless there is some faulty hardware or you caught a crazy virus, there is almost a 100% chance that changing a setting or two will resolve the issue.  Some screenshots would be helpful but I don't have the time to get them now but if you need them just let me know and I will come back and add some.

i cannot go bk to factory settings my  recovery partishion has been removed and disabled. Is there any way of reinstalling my recovery..on my resoures page it says, recovery volume available D. anyone who can help very much greatfull.

    Hi there @muff-dawg
Welcome to the HP Support Forums!
As I understand it your recover partition has been removed, and you wish to restore it. I am happy to assist, but unfortunately your options are a bit limited depending on what you have.
Did you make a set of recovery disks or a recovery flash drive prior to removing the partition? If you did then you can use that/those to do a factory restore. Otherwise you would need to obtain a set of recovery media from HP.
Obtaining HP Recovery Discs or an HP USB Recovery Drive
No matter which way you go, it is always a good idea to back up any important data to another device before doing any system recovery or restore, just to be safe.

  • Mini Notebook NB305-N600 Upgrade to SSD

I have the Toshiba Netbook NB305-N600 and would like to upgrade into SSD.  I have an OCZ Vertex 3 that requires an SATA-3 interface.  Is the N305-N600 SATA3 compatible?

    Hi, RudyA.
Thanks for the information. However, I thought you wanted a SATA III compatible interface for your SSD. Nevertheless, I am glad to know you are satisfied with the situation and that you will download the backup to a CD/DVD. Even so, you can buy a Toshiba recovery flashdrive for Windows 7 for your NB305. I have used it and it works well. I contracted a virus around Christmas time last year that required me to reinstall the system. I experienced all the common symptoms others have  because the netbook did not recognize the flashdrive. I had to change the BIOS bootup setting then use the Toshiba Hardware Assist Manager to add the bootup from a flashdrive feature. It took several times before it recognized it and this puzzled the Toshiba technician too. Anyway, thanks for keeping me in your loop.
    Regards,
    Bi-Ill
    Good luck!
