  • 3Gs not recognized, won't charge after use of aftermarket cord

My iPhone 3Gs isn't recognized by my windows laptop (I get the "USB device not recognized" error popup and the device doesn't show in iTunes) and will only charge when it is powered off. I have the latest version of iTunes, and I have tried numerous hard resets.
The same laptop (Dell Vostro running Windows 8) recognizes my wife's 3Gs when I plug it in and immediately wants to sync with it, so the laptop isn't the problem. I am also using the same cable and charger with my wife’s phone, so the cable isn’t the problem, either.
I went into Device Manager on the Control Panel menu and it shows as “unknown device.” I tried to use the “update drivers” command but got a “Windows could not find software for your device” message.
This phone was working fine until I used an aftermarket charger and cable; after that it lost sync and wouldn't charge even after I found my OEM cable/charger and started using it again. The connector pins seem fine because the phone will charge with the OEM charger, just not when the phone is turned on.
The phone is running version 6.1.3 and it is out of warranty.
    Any ideas?

Should the battery always be kept with a charge?
If you want to keep the battery charged when not in use, yes.
    Is this battery a goner?
    Probably.
To check for a bad battery, go to Apple/About This Mac/More Info
In the System Profiler window, select the Power entry & look for Health Information.
If next to Condition it says "Check Battery" then your battery is probably on the fritz.

    Try:
    - iOS: Not responding or does not turn on
    - Also try DFU mode after try recovery mode

    - If not successful and you can't fully turn the iOS device fully off, let the battery fully drain. After charging for an least an hour try the above again.
    - Try on another computer
    - If still not successful that usually indicates a hardware problem and an appointment at the Genius Bar of an Apple store is in order.

My iPad 2 won't charge unless I push the cord in real tight and hold it there. Right now I have 3% battery left! HELP PLEASE! Oh my gosh.

This sounds to me like a hardware issue. Take it to an Apple Store or Apple authorized repair service.

  • Battery not charging, LED light on power cord not on

Hi. My battery was not charging. So I bought a new battery. Even when the battery said 0%, the power cord kept the computer running. The new battery says 59% right out of the box, but it still says that the computer is not charging it. The power cord light is off, and has been since the problem began. I have tried plugging into multiple outlets, but the battery will not charge. The computer still stays on. What should I do now??

  • My air book won't charge

I was watching a movie last night my computer was working perfectly I turned it off and in the morning my charger won't charge my computer and it won't turn on. I'm a broke college student and I didn't buy the insurance so I'm freaking out.

Sometimes a SMC reset will resolve power issues.

  • Ipod touch frozen, won't charge or connect with itunes

My ipod touch is 8 months old and is frozen. It just has the battery charge icon on display, have tried to restart holding the sleep / wake button and the start button but I still only get this icon. It won't charge when attached to my computer using the usb lead and it will not link to itunes. I have some photos on it which  I do not want to lose. What can I do?

Could be a Battery problem... If so you will need to take it in to the Apple Store or AASP...

  • Won't Charge! Plugged in but goes to Battery Only icon after a few seconds!

Ok, I'm at my wit's end. I have very little battery left, and no other phone or access to internet most of the time.
I plug in my phone. No change in icon, no sound.
Sometimes I plug it in, it goes to "charging", but then immediately goes back. Sometimes this will happen over and over, every few seconds.
Sometimes it happens, and since there's no sound when that happens, I don't notice for hours.
Sometimes I plug it in, and it goes to "charging", then to "plugged in" (when it's the plug icon it's not charging, even when there's almost no battery left), then to battery.
It won't charge for more than 1.5 seconds at a time, no matter what I do.
I've tried wiggling the plug in the phone. I've plugged it into my computer, my work computer, outlet at home, outlet at work, outlet at coffee shop. Same thing.
Is this a software problem? A hardware problem? I can't get to the Apple Store for at least a few days, and I can't be without any kind of phone!
    Please help!

P.S. when it plugs into the computer, it doesn't always Sync- it thinks it's unplugged too fast for itunes to recognize it.
The phone also crashes ALL the time (even with the application for the phone settings- I have only basic apps). My itunes crashes a lot too, but I've re-installed and all that- I think the phone is crashing it.

  • MacBook Pro will not turn or or charge, have tried resetting smc, know the battery and charger both work, any ideas?

I've plugged in my MacBook with multiple chargers and batteries and every time the charger light illuminates green although the battery is currently dead, and wont turn on still. My guess is that the port the charger actually plugs into is broken though i've heard this probblem is caused by the motheboard being fried, does anyone have an idea on how I can fix this? - Thanks

We can't help you, for that problem you will just have to take it in for a free evaluation.
    Good Luck

  • New battery run dead and now won't charge at all. Put in old battery and system runs fine just that battery is no good.

Old battery in MBP is testing bad so I purchased a new one. When I cycle the battery as soon as it totally drains down it will now not take a charge or even boot my computer with the cord plugged in. I have tried many many dif things to get it to run, so far nothing has worked. I put in the old battery and it boots right up.

  • Macbook white won't charge, and problem with powering on.

Hi, I am helping a friend with his Macbook 13inch white model. A macbook3,1 model.
The battery won't charge and the Macbook itself won't usually power on, the only way to power it on is by pressing the power button and holding it down, then put in the magsafe, wait 5 seconds and release the power button and then press it once again. That way it starts up and works fine, only problem is that the fans are constantly running in highest mode.
Seems to be no way to reset the SMC on it, since when I shut it down, remove the battery and magsafe, hold down power button for 5 seconds, reattach battery and magsafe and press the power button once it won't power up, nothing happens.
I am clueless, anyone here who knows what can be done? Is it a faulty SMC on it?
Any answers on any solutions are appreciated.
    Thanks!

Same problem here, don't know how to solve it, but thanks to your post at least i know how to make it work, can't imagine how did you find out this way to start.
    Thanks

  • Will charging my iPod with a 9 Volt battery damage it?

I made one of those Altoids Mint Tin chargers. It runs on a 9V battery. If I charge my iPod with it, will it damage my iPod? If it can damage it, what would it do?

The voltage required to charge an iPod is the standard USB voltage of 5 volts. Since the device you have built is effectively homemade, and we have no way of knowing which circuit design you have used, you need to decide whether you have built it to provide 5 volts out, even though it has 9 volts going in. If it sends 9 volts into the iPod, that may damage the iPod. The polarity of the supply needs to be correct as well - in other words, the positive and negative need to be the correct way round, otherwise you may damage the iPod.
The second thing that your charger needs to be able to do is deliver the voltage at the correct rate (I believe it's 500mA. Someone please correct me if I'm wrong). In this case, if it doesn't deliver enough mA, then once again, it may not (or more likely, will not) charge the iPod.

    Make your iPod unusable.
Oh! and by the way, if you did damage an iPod as a result of stuffing 9 volts into it, that would void any remaining warranty on it.

  • Macbook air won't charge & no light on charger

I charged 2011 Macbook Air yesterday and it was fine last night and again this morning. Then, when it was running low on battery today I plugged in the wall charger (which is a new one I got in July) and suddenly my screen went black and the charge light wouldn't come on. So, I unplugged the charger and then my screen came back. Plugged in charger again and screen went black again. I restarted my computer and still same problem. I even shut down and rebooted but same problem. Of course I didn't back up my files so I scrambled to transfer some to our portable hard drive but I was on reserve power and the transfer did not complete. So, now I have a dead computer. I even just tried the charger of a friend with a MB Air but her charger didn't work for me either. So, now I have just plugged my charger in with the hope that it will mysteriously start working again -still no light showing.
And ideas? I live in southern Mexico and closest Apple Store is in Mexico City...not very close to me :-(

The only way to charge a Mac is through its charging socket. Without power, you will be unable to read its disk contents either.
I wish I had better news for you but the only option left is to contact Apple and send it to them or an authorized service provider for repair.
