  • My printer HP Officejet 4500 won't scan, fax or copy. It displays Scanner failure, press OK.

My product is HP Officejet 4500, The operating System of my computer is Window XP. The error message display on my printer is - Scanner failure, unable to scan copy or send a fax. press OK. THE SCANNER LIGHT DOES NOT MOVE AGAIN BUT THE PRINTER CAN PRINT and I am out of warranty and not inssured

I hate to tell you this, but that message normally means that you will not be scanning, copying, or faxing with this printer any more.  You can try to fix the problem by following the steps in this document, but typically you just have to get a new one.  Sorry.

My HP Envy 4500 won't scan. The information window shows "Now scanning..." and then just sits.
I have run the HP Print and Scan Doctor. It goes to "Finding and fixing scanning problems" and the status bar just freezes. The Envy information window also says "Now scanning..." and is likewise frozen.

  • HP Officejet 6500A won't scan.

My HP Officejet 6500A Plus E710n (purchased late 2011) won't scan. Prints just fine. I have a MacBook Pro with OS X Lion 10.7.5 (11G63) purchased late 2011.
I haven't scanned anything in over a year. When I tried to scan a document a few days ago, the problem began. After researching the Apple and HP boards, I uninstalled the original HP software and installed HP's updated software/updates/drivers. I also installed Apple's HP updates, still won't scan. Keep getting the error message "Scanner reported an error. Failed to open a session on the device."
I also deleted/re-added the printer and rebooted the MacBook umpteen times.
I see that when I re-add the printer, it comes up as Bonjour Multifunction (see photo), yet there's no mention of Bonjour in my Activity Monitor.
I'm stumped! Can anyone help? Thanks in advance.

Since that didn't work, try uninstalling and reinstalling the printer and the HP software.  I'll link the download below, so you don't have to search for it again.  Let me know what happens.

  • Officejet 4500 will not scan

Ihave an HP Pavilion running Windows 7 Home Premium and an HP Officejet 4500  510g  all-in-one. I suddenly cannot scan from the Solution Center or from the front panel of my printer. The Solution Center first gave me an error:
8,[(8,101,0)]. I rebooted computer and tried again, and it scanned a third of a page and froze. I downloaded the new HP Print and Scan Doctor and ran it. It showed an error when scanning the drivers(no error number). It instructed me to unplug printer power, plug it back in, reboot computer and try again.Upon doing so it , the scan doctor came back with another error and said it could not fix the issue and showed me a link to HP Support. Clicked on the link and it was the Driver downloads page. I downloaded the full driver, but have not installed it yet. First, I'd like to know if, since i have the original disc that came with the printer, should i install from the disc, or install the downloaded driver? (Both have the same date of release on them). Are they different somehow? Is one better than the other? Secondly, I'd like to know if i need to uninstall any software or drivers before i install the new one? Or will the new one just overwrite and "fix" the bad one? Thanks in advance for your help. I really appreciate it!
P.S. If i do need to uninstall anything, Please tell me exactly what to uninstall. Thanks!

Hello BLKFEATHER, and welcome to the HP Forums, I hope you enjoy your experience!
I see you are experiencing scan issues.  I would like to help.
I would suggest Uninstalling the Printer Software.
Once it is uninstalled, I would suggest putting your system into clean boot mode within the Microsoft configuration.  You can do so by following this document: How to perform a clean boot in Windows.
Once the computer is in clean boot mode, I would suggest reinstalling the HP Printer Install Wizard for Windows.
Good luck and please let me know the results of your troubleshooting steps. Thank you for posting on the HP Forums!

  • OS 10.4.11 and HP Officejet 4500 compatibility issue (scanning)

    Hi there,
    I am having a compatibility issue with a G4 (OS 10.4.11) and a HP Officejet 4500 (all-in-one).
(Sorry if this is a little long, but there are many specs and many attempts listed here).
Problem: I cannot scan from the computer (upon opening HP Scan, a Browser Device window pops up, asking to "Choose a scanning device" the model is not listed, and it continues to search for a device but cannot find it) or from the scanner control panel to the computer (I tried selecting Open in HP Scan and Open in Preview from the panel  –it then says on the panel "Starting scanning" but it doesn't scan even though the power button flashes (it then reverts to date and time), and the program it's opening in on the computer just seems to hang).
    Still, some functions work fine:
    - I can print from the computer to the printer (it recognizes the printer)
    - The HP fax test seemed to run fine (via computer)
    - As a stand-alone device (without the computer), I can photocopy in B&W and color –so there doesn't seem to be anything wrong with the scanner itself.
    Here are the specs:
    Computer specs:
    - PowerPC G4, 933 MHz, 512 MB SDRAM, running OS 10.4.11 (no Intel Core processor)
(the hard drive is partitioned into 3 –one runs 10.4.11 (the others Jaguar and OS9 –for compatiblity with other programs/peripherals) –21GB space remaining on 10.4.11 partition
    All-in-One specs:
    - HP Officejet 4500 G510g-m (USB, not wireless) all-in-one (printer/scanner/fax/copier) with USB 2.0 high-speed A-B printer cable (says in literature and on box it is  compatible with the G4 running OS 10.4.11, 256 MB RAM, 500 MB HD)
I contacted HP Tech Support. They suggested the following which were tried and failed to work:
    - shutting everything down and restarting (many times)
    - they checked to see if there was any update to the HP software –there didn't appear to be
    - plug power cord directly into wall outlet
    - switch to USB 2.0 cable (from 1.0)
    - unplugging and replugging the USB 2.0 cable
    - plug USB directly into the G4
    - turning off the firewall (under System Preferences - Sharing)
    - "scrub" or complete uninstall of all HP software (twice)
    - search and removal of files via system and user libraries pertaining to HP (and some Epson files)
    - verify and repair permissions (twice)
    - reinstall of HP software (twice, second time after scrub/uninstall and verify/repair permissions)
    - Software Update (via Apple menu) –only found Java 1.3.1 and 1.4.2 Release 2 (version 2.0) which they suggested might fix the problem –I downloaded and installed them, and then J2SE 5.0 Release 4 (version 4.0) which I downloaded but could not install (error message)
I then contacted Apple Tech Support and they said to go to support.apple.com and do a manual search for "HP 4500" –I did not find any drivers.
[I did previously have an Epson CX 4600 all-in-one which scanned fine with a USB 1.0 cable, even after the printheads had clogged shut –and I had had a HP Officejet J4580 which worked fine (which was for a family member) –this software would've been removed with the current HP installs and scrubs]
I am on the verge of returning this –it has also gotten several very bad reviews on the Apple site (for the wireless), however, I may have trouble finding a compatible device, as one running 10.4 is getting hard to find (unless I buy used, then no warranty and potentially other problems).
If anyone knows of any drivers or has any other information as to why this is not working, I would be most grateful (BTW, I am not much of a tech guy, so please bear with me).
    Thanks.

  • Hp officejet 6500 won't scan

I have a MacBook running OS X 10.9.5 and I'm using an HP Officejet 6500 series. I'm connected via USB cable. My scanner worked fine for months, now it's not working. The error message on the printer says "No Scan Options. Refer to device documentation to troubleshoot." I've gone through all the troubleshooting including uninstalling, reinstalling, and all the updating and restarts. Any idea what else I can try?

    Hi @mk168
I understand you are having problems scanning despite your best efforts. I'm sorry to hear that, but will certainly do all I can to help out
There is no full feature software and driver available from HP, but the OS X v10.9 Mavericks driver for your printer is available through Apple Software Update (ASU).
With this driver you can still print and scan, you just wont have HP software to scan from. Scanning to the computer from the printer control panel is only available when using HP Scan software, thus it will not work because there is no HP scan software as apart of the Apple Software Update driver.
    Instead, you can scan using,
Method one: Scan from the Print & Scan window
Method two: Scan from Apple Preview
Method three: Scan from Apple Image Capture
I hope this helps. If you have any additional questions are have any difficulty using any of these methods, please let me know what method you are trying and what the issue/error is. • HP Officejet 6700 won't scan

When I orginally got this printer it scanned totally fine. Now something has changed..
When I try to scan to my computer, both through HP Scan or through the printers scan option, I get an error saying:
"The operation couldn’t be completed. (com.hp.scanhandler.error error 2.)" and Scan Failed.
I went into HP Utility and under "Scan to Computer"  the enable scan to computer box is greyed out and I cannot click it!! There is a red icon with a messsage that says:
"Scan to computer cannot be enabled: The HP software required for Scan to Computer could not be located on this computer. Please download and install the latest HP recommended software for your device from http://www.hp.com/support, and then try again."
Soo... I went to the site provided, found my specific printer and dowloaded the software, making sure to select the Scanner option in the softward dowloads options when you open the file. Downloaded fine and I went through the process again and again same problems.
I unpluged the printer, plugged it back in and hit the little icon in the top left that looks like a paper with a "*" on top of it, that started some download/update which I let run all the way through. Once that way one I tried agai and still all the same problems.
How do I fix this!! I need to scan a document and I dont have a usb handy. I did a computer clean out a couple months ago and may have deleted hp utility by mistake because it wasnt an application before I started troubleshooting and downloaded it again. But it is downloaded now. The printer prints totally fine when I send documents to it and I can connect and look at th status from my laptop. How difficult is it to just scan a **bleep** file!!!!
