HP Officejet 6500 won't print black after power outages

We experienced a series of power outages last night. Now the black won't print at all. The print cartridge is fairly new, about a month old, scarcely used. All the color cartridges will print.
I've tried cleaning the print heads and running the alignment tests, but nothing can produce any black ink. For a pure text page with just black lettering and nothing else, the printer goes through the motions but nothing is printed.
I have a feeling that the power outages tripped it up somehow. Is there a way to undo this?
thanks in advance

@Kenteeple and @oli22  If you make a copy, will that print black?

    Hi,
I have an Officejet 6500 AIO that will print any color besides black. We've already replaced the black toner cartridge, ran an alignment (which failed), and did 1st and 2nd level printhead cleaning, all with no improvement. I've been looking online and HP doesn't even sell replacement printheads anymore for this model, and the ones I could find from other vendors cost half the price of a new printer.
Anything else I can try before calling it quits and replacing the whole unit?
    Thanks,
    Dave

  • Help-HP Officejet 6500-Won't print Black text

Well, I have tried all of the suggestions on this site.  My black ink gradually started fading out, so I assumed I needed a new cartridge, but that wouldn't print either, so I put back the old cartridge, which my computer said is half full.  I tried resetting the printer 2 or 3 times, tried disconnecting it with the printer both off and on at the time of disconnect, tried realigning twice, tried cleaning the vent hole on the cartridge (which doesn't look like there's even an opening, but it was working before, so it must be like that), and removing the cartridge holder and washing it in the sink.  It still does not work.  This printer is about 3 or 4 years old.  It has worked fine, but it's annoying, because every time you turn it on, it goes through this major resetting process, and it does that after about three or for print jobs, and you have to wait for it to finish.  We never could figure out how to set up the fax machine.  Does anybody have any other ideas about how to get the black ink to work?  I'm using up all my colored ink printing out these test pages!

It sounds like you have already done quite a bit of troubleshooting for this issue.  It sounds like the next step in troubleshooting is to test replacing the printhead.  However, before going that route try looking at the troubleshooting document that I will link below.
    Troubleshooting Print Quality Issues
    * With the printer being 3-4 years old I would say the printer is most likely out of warranty.  In this case, one would have to purchase the printhead to test if this resolves the issue.  The printhead can be purchase from the HP Parts Store using the part number CN643a.  It currently sells for around $70 usd.
With the price of the printhead, I would advise looking into a new printer.  The reason being that one could find a new printer for not much more than this and it would come with a full factory warranty.

  • HP Officejet 6500 won't print in black

I noticed that my black ink started to streak so I replaced the black ink cartridge, cleaned printheads, and completed an alignment page.  All the colors showed on the test pages, except black, and the black characters that did show up were incomplete and streaked.  I tried printing in black and white, and the pages shoot out of the printer blank.  I've exhausted all the trouble shooting on HP and have had no luck.  Any ideas about what else I can try?

There are 5 different versions of the Officejet 6500. I went with a basic model (E710a) to supply a troubleshooting quality document for poor printer output. This link will give troubleshooting steps to try and resolve the issue it lists some that you have mentioned doing but there are steps that listed that were not mentioned in the above post.
If still having the problem, I would do a manual cleaning of the contacts on the printhead and on the print cartridges to ensure that build up is not an issue. Pages 117-121 of the user manual outline the print head cleaning process. Page 234 in the manual gives instructions to clean the contacts on the cartridges too. I hope that this helps

  • Officejet 6500 printhead not printing black ink

I just purchased a new printhead and it shows I have full new black ink cartridge, but it prints all colors except black.

    Hello bstimson1.
Welcome to the HP Forums! I understand your Officejet 6500, after purchasing a brand new printhead, is still not printing in black ink.
Now, buying a brand new printhead is not a guaranteed fix, but I can certainly try and resolve this issue. When purchasing this printhead, did you receive setup ink cartridges? Additionally, where did you purchased the printhead?
Did you clean the electrical contacts inside the product, before installing this printhead? I will provide an HP document on performing this step here.
Please follow this HP document on Common Print Quality Problems, as well. If you "Clean the Printhead" three times, you could see improvement.
Please inform me your troubleshooting steps.
Looking forward to hear from you.
    Hello adeterman.
Welcome to the HP Forums as well! I understand you are not witnessing any black ink when printing a document. What type of printer do you have? Click here to find out: Model Number.
I am going to recommend following this entire HP document on Common Print Quality Problems.
If you are still receiving a defective printout, please contact HP techincal support for further assistance. Click here to find out: HP Worldwide Contact.

  • Officejet 7110 won't print black only with empty color cartridges

There is a similar thread on this for the Officejet 6700, but I wanted to put it out there for the Officejet 7110 too.
When one of the color cartridges is getting LOW on ink, you start getting error messages for black and white printing. A prompt asks you if you want to print in just black ink, even though you have set all the settings in the dialog to black ink only. Strange, but at least you can keep printing in black ink only. Until...
When one of the color cartridges becomes EMPTY, you get totally cut off from printing in black ink only! You will be allowed to print NOTHING until you put in a new color cartridge!
I don't actually need to print color on this printer. I use it for half size check plots of engineerings drawings. Why on Earth would I need color cartridges to print black ink only checkplots? This is a total scam by HP to milk every last penny from the consumer.

I signed up for this forum just so I could respond to this thread.
After looking for an HP email address for support (that was also a joke), turns out its not simply a printer setting you can disable.
We also purchased this OfficeJet 7110 printer for strict use of black at the office.
Years and years of everyone saying, "Don't buy HP products, stop buying HP products, HP products are inferior." - to rephrase nicely.
Thought I would give it a shot, right out of the box the alignment was screwed up and took about 8 hours to fix and reprint the testing sheet (further sapping the colour cartridges). Now I can't even print in black. This nonsense about mixing colour to create a more true black, that's the most ridiculous thing I have ever heard. Let me print in gray if the ink quality you supply is so terrible.
Will not buy another HP product again, and I will joint he hoard of many who will spread the good word.
To put it bluntly; HP - get your **shhit-frawking-bleep** together.

  • Officejet 6500 won't print when Laptop is on the network.

We have a HP Officejet 6500 that connects to a laptop vis USB plug. It worked fine for a few weeks, but now anytime the laptop is connected to the office network by ethernet is will not print. Once you unplug the network cable from the laptop it prints fine. The laptop is running windows 7 and we installed the printer using the Windows 7 drivers from here. Please help!

This doesn't make sense. The printer is exhibiting behavior noticed when a network printer is connected to a laptop while the laptop is connected to a VPN. But in this case, neither the printer is connected on a network, not is the laptop connected to a VPN per se.
Are you sure all the latest drivers for your laptop have been installed? That's pretty much the only thing I can think of right now.

  • Computer won't start up after power outage....

We just had a power outage when our computer was on and now that our power is back, the computer won't start up. (I'm typing this on our power book!) I hold in the button on the back, get the "bong" and then the computer whirs for a while with a black screen and then just dies. What to do??

You can, in addition to Barry's excellent suggestions, reset the SMU.

  • Thunderbolt won't wake up after power outage

This is more of me documenting a solution than asking a question...
I have a Mac Mini Server connected to a Thunderbolt display and a 23" monitor through the HDMI interface. When I experience a power outage at my house, my Mac Mini Server shuts down (that's how I know there was a power outage while I was out of the house). When I power up the Mac Mini, it interprets the HDMI monitor as the main monitor and the Thunderbolt won't wake up.
I've tried a bunch of different solutions (rebooting with the HDMI disconnected and only the Thunderbolt connected, CMD-OPT-PR PRAM reset, connecting the Thunderbolt to a MacBook Air) and nothing solves the problem. The Thunderbolt won't wake up.
The solution is to unplug the Thunderbolt display for about a minute or two, then plug it back in. Somehow this resets the Thunderbolt. When the Mac Mini starts up again (with both the HDMI and Thunderbolt connected) it reboots using the Thunderbolt as the main display and the HDMI as the secondary (as is set up in my System Preferences).
I haven't found this solution anywhere else on the 'net. Let me know if you have similar problems / solutions.

Thanks, this was the only solution I found online that worked!

  • FCP won't fully launch after power outage

    Hello all,
I walked away for a long render - while gone the electricity went out. The G4 was on a battery back up but the firewire destination drive was not.
I saved the project under a new name and rebooted the whole system. Now, FCP will not fully launch. The opening screen comes up and launch starts to the point it finds my SONY dsr-45 but then it does not open up for a new or old project from the alias nor from double clicking the project name from Finder.
I re-installed FCP and sent older versions to the trash. Still does not fully open.
Other applications (Photoshop) operate as usual. AAAAAUUUUUUUGGGHHHHHHHHHH !
...anybody have any good ideas what to try next?
    Fustrated and on deadline.

This gets better... I have a McBkPro with the same version of FCP. So I connect the same FW drive to it to keep editing. But many of the render files were on the G4 so I render again on this machine... the process locks up in the same place each time. I figure it is a corrupt media file so I dis able the clip from the sequence and try to render the same selection - it does fine and finishes the render. Then I move to a diffeerent area on the sequence to render there and again a lock up. This is spiral of death frozen - have to hold the power button down to reboot FROZEN !!!
I am beginning to think the G4 needs a complete and total UN-install of FCP and re-install.
And the FW drive has physical damage from loosing power during a render/write and is dead.
    Any thoughts?

  • HP Photosmart 6510 won't print black ink

I changed the ink cartridge in my printer and it won't print black ink now.
I have used almost an entire cartridge of my color inks running alignments and cleaning the printhead. I have also cleaned the print head with a cotton swab and some warm water.
I have delted the software and reinstalled it.
I have always used HP cartridges.
The printer is out of warranty. I'm in the US.
I have also ran every reset I can find online, nothing is working.
I appreciate your help as I am a broke college student and can't really afford a new printer at the moment.
    Thanks!

Hello @valster101 and welcome to the HP Forums!
One thing I see that hasn't been tried is checking the vents on the cartridges. Please have a look through this Printer Prints a Blank Page or Does Not Print Black or Color Ink for the HP Photosmart 6510 e-All-in...s document to make sure you have tried all of these steps at one point or another.
If it still won't print black after that, just let me know and I'll do my best to get you a resolution

  • Hp officejet 6500 wireless e-709, black won't print.

I changed the cartridge but no luck.  aligned the print heads and cleaned them in the "tools" section
The color cartriddges need to be changed but I am hessitant to change tthem if the black is not going to work
    any ideas or recommendations?

The troubleshooting steps in the document here may help resolve black not printing on your Officejet 6500 e709 wireless printer.  Be sure to check the vents as shown in solution three.
If the above does not resolve the issue then soaking the printhead as shown in the post here may help.

  • HP Officejet J4580 won't print in black

I have an Officejet J4580 that won't print black.  I bought it a few months ago (when Circuit City started their going out of business sale) and it worked fine when I installed it, then I turned it off and it sat until recently.  Now, everything else works fine but black won't print.
It says that there is ink in the black cartridge, and I have tried aligning cartridges and cleaning them, with no luck.  It is an original HP cartridge, not refilled, reused or by another vendor.
Any suggestions would be appreciated; I would hate to have to buy another cartridge after using this one only during installation and installation test pages!
    Dan

Printer is junk. This is 2nd cartridge that I used and I ended with not a single black letter printed on paper. I am seling mine with new cartridge for 1/5 price locally in Serbia so if you are there email me if you want it.
I think I am done with HP. this one is chinese build quality and is worth nothing.
