HP Officejet 6500A won't photocopy or print

Hello everyone and thank you in advanced if you are able to help me resolve my issue.  I put a paper face down and was hoping to get a copy of it.  The printer goes through all of the motions of 'printing' ie, ink sounds like it is moving back and forth and printing on the paper, but the paper turns up blank.  Any suggestions, please help.
Thanks so much!

Hello,
If you are getting blank printouts and copy, most probably you are out of ink.
Check the ink levels.
Apart from that, you can refer to this link for general troubleshooting for your product:

Hope this helps.

Officejet 6500a won’t install wirelessly on Win 7 HP laptop. Does fine wirelessly on generic desktop pc. HP Support Assistant does not detect this unit. At one time, I had the laptop wired to the printer, so all the relevant data were transferred automatically.

Wireless and wired use different setups. Since you didn't remove the previous install it expects it to be wired connection.

  • Wireless configuration for HP OfficeJet 6500A plus All-In-One printer on Ubuntu 10.04

I have bought a HP OfficeJet 6500A plus All-In-One printer CN557A, which I want to use with ubuntu 10.04 64-bit as a wireless network printer.
Before i bought i checked compatibility on www.hplipopensource.org and www.openprinting.org, and all was in order.
The machine is autodetected and fully functional when connected with a usb cable, but i have not managed to get it to work as a wireless printer.
    This is what I did:
I configured the printer on the wireless network (through the printer interface), and it connects. It prints out a "Wireless Network Test Report", and everything works. I can ping to its local ip adress, and access it through the browser. HP eprint also works.
I installed hplip 3.11.10 and dependencies manually. I did this because the default hplip in ubuntu 10.04 did not recognise the device.
I ran 'hp-check', which gave no errors or warnings:

    2. Run-time check mode (-r or --run): Use this mode to determine if a distro
supplied package (.deb, .rpm, etc) or an already built HPLIP supplied tarball
has the proper dependencies installed to successfully run.
    3. Both compile- and run-time check mode (-b or --both) (Default): This mode

I then ran 'sudo hp-setup', chose the device (which was detected), chose my wireless network, entered the wireless security key. On the configuration results dialog I get two messages:
"Your printer has been succesfully configured on the wireless network. You may now unplug the USB cable"
    and
"The Ethernet cable is plugged in which will prevent you from connecting to a wireless network. To connect wirelessly, remove the cable and try again. (VSA000)"
There is no ethernet cable plugged in, so i can't remove it. I unplug the USB cable and click 'finish'. This makes the 'hp-setup'-dialog start over again, and the printer has not been installed.
In the terminal i have the following:

A friendly soul on ubuntuforums pointed out to me, that the wireless configuration is only necessary when the printer is NOT connected to a (W)LAN. So all I really had to do was to configure the printer in the CUPS administation page, and it worked. Problem solved. Silly me.

  • Officejet 6500A won't print

My officejet 6500A plus won't print often.  It says it can't communicate with my Asus pc.   I unplug it for a day or two and it starts printing!  Just turning it off doesn't help.  I need to unplug it.  Meanwhile I can't print for days!  Any suggestions?

    Hey @collage,
Welcome to the HP Support Forums!
I would like to assist you today with resolving the communication issues you're receiving on your Windows 8.1 computer when trying to print to your HP Officejet 6500A Plus e-All-in-One Printer. Can I please have you run through the steps below.
    Step 1: Run Microsoft Hotfix:
Microsoft recently released a Hotfix to resolve printing issues on the Windows 8.1 Operating System. I'm going to have you start by running the Microsoft Fix to see if this quickly resolves your intermittent print issues.
    Microsoft Support: Hotfix
Once the website opens, select the Hotfix Download Available box. Run through the onscreen instructions to complete the Hotfix update.
Once the Hotfix is complete, please test printing again. Should the issue persist, please proceed to the next step.
    Step 2: Add Alternate Driver:
Even though there is a Full Feature Software and Driver download available for your printer on Windows 8.1, there is a chance that your Windows 8.1 Operating System is not agreeing with the driver for your printer. To confirm if this is the case please follow the steps below.
Open your Start screen (either by selecting the windows start button in the bottom left hand corner or by selecting the 'Windows' button on the bottom left of your keyboard to the left of 'Ctrl'
In the Start Screen type 'Devices and Printers'
If the Devices and Printers option doesn't automatically populate, than click on Settings on the top right and then click on Devices and Printers.
In the Devices and Printers folder right click on your HP Officejet 6500A Plus and left click on Printer Properties
Left click on the Advanced tab
    Left click on New Driver
When the New Driver window opens just hit 'next' until you see a list of Manufacturers on the left and a list of Printers on the right.
Select HP as the Manufacturer on the left
Select Deskjet 9800 as the printer on the right. If Deskjet 9800 doesn't appear than select 'Windows Update' on the bottom left and once the update completes you will be able to select Deskjet 9800.
After selecting Deskjet 9800 hit next to complete the New Driver Wizard
Under the Printer Properties window select 'Apply' but don't hit OK
    Select the General tab
Rename your printer back to HP Officejet 6500A Plus
    Hit OK
Lastly, right click on your HP Officejet 6500A Plus one more time and left click on Printing Preferences
Left click on the Paper/Quality tab
Left click on the 'Normal' dropdown for Print Quality on the bottom right and change this to Fast Normal
    Hit Apply and OK
    Try to print!
Please let me know if either the Hotfix from Microsoft of the alternate print driver resolves your printing issues. Best of luck!

  • HP Officejet 6500A won't scan.

My HP Officejet 6500A Plus E710n (purchased late 2011) won't scan. Prints just fine. I have a MacBook Pro with OS X Lion 10.7.5 (11G63) purchased late 2011.
I haven't scanned anything in over a year. When I tried to scan a document a few days ago, the problem began. After researching the Apple and HP boards, I uninstalled the original HP software and installed HP's updated software/updates/drivers. I also installed Apple's HP updates, still won't scan. Keep getting the error message "Scanner reported an error. Failed to open a session on the device."
I also deleted/re-added the printer and rebooted the MacBook umpteen times.
I see that when I re-add the printer, it comes up as Bonjour Multifunction (see photo), yet there's no mention of Bonjour in my Activity Monitor.
I'm stumped! Can anyone help? Thanks in advance.

Since that didn't work, try uninstalling and reinstalling the printer and the HP software.  I'll link the download below, so you don't have to search for it again.  Let me know what happens.

  • HP Officejet 6500A won't work with Windows 10

I just upgraded to Windows 10 from Windows 7 on my HP Pavilion and now my HP Officejet 6500A printer won't work.  Do you have any updates to solve this issue? Thanks.

I have the same issue with my OJ 6500 (network connected).  And I've been just been sent on a wild goose chase to install the support assistant - which didn't actually resolve my issue.  When I go directly to the drivers, it recognizes my OS as Windows 10, but doesn't give me a matching driver package to download... How/when will this be resolved? Does anyone have a workaround? If I knew that my printer/scanner doesn't work anymore I certainly wouldn't have upgraded to Windows 10.  Win 8.1 wasn't perfect, but at least everything worked... Thanks for any suggestions!

  • Can an officejet 6500a be upgraded for duplex printing

I have an Officejet 6500a without the duplex option. Can I upgarde this printer by simple buying and installing the duplexer? Many thanks ...

For the E710a printer CN555a, the duplexer is not an option. It may physically attach but is not designed to work with that particular model.

  • Will the officejet 6500a plus be ready for printing when the mains supply is turned on

I am considring the purchase of an Officejet 6500a Plus (duplex is a prime reason) it will be used in a home office environment with Win 7 operating system. I can remotely swithch on the mains supply to the printer and router. Will the printer be available to print (after start up checks) without further intervention?  eg. do i need to depress the start button on the printer?
    Many thanks in anticipation Jimbow

The printer should come up "ready" after a minute or so and accept print jobs without any intervention on the front panel.
That said, it would be much better to leave the printer turned on and let the automatic power management take care of putting the printer into a low power state.  If you remove power from the printer remotely there is a risk of having the printheads not properly capped after a print job.  This can cause the printheads to dry out, causing print quality issues.  It will also result in extra ink being used when the printer power is restored as more servicing will be performed on the printhead.

  • OfficeJet 6500A - won't print correctly on letterhead

    OE Vista
I am trying to print on a letterhead which has about a 3 inch dark picture at the top.  The printer acts as if it is sensing the picture and it does not start printing until about half was down the page.   It doesn't matter if I print directly from the program or if I put an original on the glass and try to make a copy onto the letterhead.  There must be a setting I need to change but I can't find it.
    THank you,

Does it only do this when you use the letterhead, or does it happen with other types of paper?

  • Officejet 6500A won't scan

"Unable to communicate" message. Updated the full driver pack and installed the Print and Scan Doctor, which OK'd the Device Manager but stopped at "Driver Check" with message: "Scan driver unable to communicate with the product." I unplugged the printer and rebooted as receommended but still the same result. I have successfully scanned in the past with occasional no-communicate messages which I solved by the usual off-on, but now it won't work. Might there be some other software, e.g., anti-virus, that's interfering? Thanks. R.

Hooray! I changed ports, ran the Scan Doctor, and it worked! The OCR doc was really clean too.
Why would changing ports make a difference?
Thank you, Teri, for your help. I'm going out of town till early next week and then I'll run some more scans. Let's keep this thread open in case there are further problems. Once I see it's going well, I'll let you know and we can close this out.

  • HP Officejet 4620 Won't Scan on Printer Itself

My computer runs on Windows 8, and updated itself last night. Somehow my printer was disconnected from the computer, so I couldn't do anything. I reinstalled the printer, but now I cannot scan using the "scan" button on the printer itself; I now have to scan from the desktop using the printer assistant icon. How can I make it so I'm able to scan directly from the printer to the computer?

Hello @BrendaBrown , and welcome to the HP Forums!
I see you're experiencing scanning problems.  I would like to help!
I would recommend performing a power reset on the printer.  Disconnect the power cord from the printer and the power outlet, then wait 60 seconds. After 60 seconds, plug the printer back in. Ensure you plug the printer directly to a wall outlet. Make sure to bypass any sort of surge protector or power bar.
I would also recommend downloading and running the scan portion of the HP Print and Scan Doctor.
Good luck and please let me know the results of your troubleshooting steps. Thank you for posting on the HP Forums!

  • Hp officejet 6500a won't scan to computer without ink cartridge installed?

Why do I need an ink cartridge installed to scan a pdf to computer?

    Hi,
I did mentioned this around 2 years back: Vendors (all of them) should allow scan function without ink but looks like the answer is: before it's a scanner, it IS a printer and it needs inks to perform its primary function: printing. No inks, it may stop to do anything during the warming up process.
    Regards.

  • Officejet 6500A a new copy of printer keeps getting installed and I haven't done anything?

When i first got this printer (about 2 weeks ago) I kept getting notices of updates being installed one right after the other and each time there was an HP software update installed a new copy of the deviced was also installed changing my settings so I could no longer print with the one I had been using.
I asked on here how to stop that and got no responses so I went in and changed the settings so an update would not be installed and it's still happening. In the last few days 2 copies of the printer has been installed and each time it happens without me knowing. I try to print and nothing happens. I got into the devices and discover another printer copy so I have to change my default printer to the new copy.
This is getting frustrating. I have not upgraded my operating system, installed new software or hardware but somehow when I shut the computer off at night and I turn it on again a new copy is showing up. Not every day but several times in a week. There have been no windows updates so I really cannot figure out why this keeps happening.
I would really appreciate some help with resolving this problem.

    Hi there,
Try downloading and running the print and scan doctor located here:
    http://h10025.www1.hp.com/ewfrf/wc/document?docname=c03275041&cc=us&dlc=en&lc=en
It can fix a lot on its own and if not give a better idea of what is going on.
    Best of Luck!

  • My HP OfficeJet 6500A Plus printer/scanner/fax/copier won't connect to my wireless network

I tried going through the Wireless Network setup on my HP OfficeJet 6500A Plus machine. The printer recognizes the network and I then type in my network's password but it won't connect to the network. What can I do? I would like to be able to print and scan wirelessly. Help please!

    Hello erking,
Sorry to hear that you are having an issue with connecting the printer to your Mac over a wireless connection.
I have done some research and I have found a great document that deals with The Printer Is Not Found During a Wireless Network Installation.
Please feel free to write me back and I will be happy to assist you further with any questions or concerns you may have.
    Thanks for your time.

  • How can i make my officejet 6500a print in black and white only?

I just bought an officejet 6500a and I can't figure out how to make it print in black in white only.  I print a lot of stuff that doesn't need color and want to save my ink. On some prints it gives me that option when I print. but for the most part it doesn't allow me to change to black and white on things i am printing off the web

Pages 30-34 of the user manual for the Officejet 6500A covers how to change print preferences for the printer with both Mac and Windows. It covers documents, brochures and photos and covers finding the gray scale option. Here is a link to that manual http://goo.gl/6J61R .
    I hope that this helps.
