HP Officejet 8500 A909G Printheads Problem

The other night I turned off my printer and moved it to another room while I rearranged the furniture.  When I plugged it back in and turned it on I received the error message:  "The following printhead has a problem:" and it lists both printheads.  As far as I know I didnt hit the printer on anything or drop it so i dont think there is an alignment problem.  I searched the HP forums for some ideas and I did clean the printheads and did a power reset.  Still no luck.  I replaced both printheads a few months ago and the printer has worked great until the other day.  Any help is appreciated.  Thanks.

Hi @BigSteve008
I see you are experiencing a printhead error, specifically: "the following printhead has a problem". Although the title of the following document describe a different error, I believe the solutions presented may help; 'The Following Printhead Appears to be Missing or Damaged' or 'The Following Printhead has a Problem....
I hope this helps.

  • New OfficeJet 8500 [A909g] crashes router on wireless

Have a new OfficeJet 8500 [A909g]. Whenever I attempt to connect it to the Time Warner provided gateway [SMC modem/router] it causes the gateway to reset, knocking all my devices off the network. I know it is the printer because whenever it has the wireless radio off the network is perfect [it was also not an issue before the printer]. It cannot be a software issue, since I don't even get to the point of installing the software before the network crashes.
Is this a typical issue with these printers? I may try a new router, but I don't know any reason a printer would cause a router to reboot.

Call tech support and get a level 3 or 4. I had a similar problem with my 8500 pro wireless and 2wire 1800hg (ATT DSL router/modem). Printer came Friday from Cost Central, took it out of the box, atually read the instructions, and did the wireless wizard on the printer. Entered my router/modem's 10 number WEP and the thing became possessed. Told me to turn it off then on, then gave me "Improper Shutdown" error. Over and over. Did partial resets, partial full resets. You name it. Was about to throw the thing out the window. So I turned off the radio and hooked up via USB. No issues. But I wanted wireless.
Called HP support and the first few calls were a bit rough (I love how you become connected to a rep and all you hear is typing for five minutes), but finally got a level 3 or 4, and they were sharp. He accessed my computer via HP's Live Help, and re-configured my router. Thank god every pic on my hard drive is G rated! I think they enabled DHCP on the router, then reduced the range of allowable IPs for my network, from 144 to 25. Then I was told to enter the printer's IP (I chose from one of the IPs in the range), and Subnet address. This was done on the printer under Network/Advanced settings. The tech guy was chatting with his supervisor during the process, it was a clinic in how to get a solution. Finally, he installed the drivers and the thing started working wirelessly. Then I installed on my laptop and it's a miracle. I had visions of sending it back to HP and getting a refurb. Unfortunately, I bought online to get a better price, so had to deal with HP for returns.
I told the tech guy that this model just hit the shelves at Best Buy (it's been at Office Depot for almost a month), so folks with older routers will problably have similar issues.

I have an Officejet 8500 Pro a909g, downloaded latest software package from hp for windows 7. Will scan but wont print, immediatleyl displays error when I try to send test print. Disabled my Norton anti-virus and Norton firewall but stil wont print. Wants to run printer troubleshooter which says there is nothing wrong.

  • Officejet 8500 pro Wireless problems

This week I bought an HP pro 8500 wireless printer.  I've never owned a wireless printer before, so I actually read the instructions and before installing the printer software, I ran the wireless wizard on the unit--entered the 10-digit WEP, which was accepted. Then within seconds the printer started to wig out. Cycles between "turn printer off and on", then after doing so, get "Improper Shutdown", as if I didn't use the power button to turn it off.
I'm running Windows Vista Premium SP1, and am using a 2wire 1800HG  modem/router with my ATT DSL--have a static IP, as my service was installed up in 1999, back when you had to live within five miles of a switching station. The connection is very stable, and as far as I know, only one update was done to the unit (remotely by a ATT tech) when I upgraded to PRO service.
Same thing happens when I try to connect via ethernet. When I turn the printer's radio off and connect via USB, it works fine, albeit wired. The printer's network diagnostic printout says it can't locate the SSID.
I'm dealing with HP support in India, and they have been OK,  have had me try all of the normal stuff (reset, not using power strip, etc), to no avail. Now they are going to access my set remotely, hopefully this morning. Any ideas what may be causing this? Could my router be incompatible?

The problem with some HP wireless printers (including the Officejet Pro 8500) and AT&T's 2WIRE DSL wireless-router is a known issue. For others reading this, the problem is that the printer FW faults when you connect the printer to the 2WIRE router (Ethernet or Wireless).
The work around is to use assign a static IP address to the printer. Here's one way to do this:
Unplug he telephone line from the 2WIRE router
Turn the power off on the 2WIRE router, wait 30 seconds, then turn the power back on.
Go through the normal process of connecting the printer to the 2WIRE device (Ethernet or Wi-Fi). The printer will not crash as long as the telephone line is disconnected from the 2WIRE device.
From the Officejet's front panel, access the "Advanced Setup" menu under "Network"
Select "IP Settings", acknowledge the warning and select "Manual IP Address"
Select "IP Address" and change the last IP address group (octet) to something higher or lower. Specifically for your 2WIRE router, select 192.168.0.60.
Press Ok and plug in the telephone line into the 2WIRE router.

  • Officejet Pro L7780 Printhead Problem

My printer is 2.5 years old and has light home use.  The printheads started failing...I had to run "clean printheads" before attempting to print anything.  HP Solutions said "Printheads OK."  Still, the printer was unusable.
I bought 2 new printheads, cleaned the printhead contacts in the printer, installed the printheads.  Now the printer won't do anything and HP Solutions says printhead health is "bad," and the display window on the printer says both printheads have a problem.
I re-inserted the old printheads and the "problem" messages disappeared, HP Solutions says printhead health is "good," but the printer won't print.
I've done every solution suggested on user forums.
I've done a full factory reset and flashed new firmware.  No help.  Anyone had a similar problem and been able to solve it?
    Thanks.

Sorry you're having trouble with your L7780. HP doesn't recommend routinely cleaning the electrical contacts before you install new printheads. I'm worried that you might have transfered some ink onto the contacts, since your problem changed from a print quality problem to a error message. I would suggest that you try cleaning the electrical contacts one more time. Try the instructions in this document: http://h10025.www1.hp.com/ewfrf/wc/document?docname=c01628836&tmp_task=solveCategory&lc=en&dlc=en&cc... - make sure you let everything dry completely before you reinstall the printheads.
Also, for print quality issues, this is the HP support doc http://h10025.www1.hp.com/ewfrf/wc/document?docname=c01957673&tmp_task=solveCategory&lc=en&dlc=en&cc...

Do not buy this printer.  It has wireless and Hardwire network connection problems.  You have been warned.
I installed the software on 5 computers.  Everything worked fine for about a day.  Then they all lost connections in the Device manager.  I have other shared  printers that are dormant and show up as grayed out when a computer is not available but completely gone????  Once it is gon, your HP solution center will not start.  And the HP add a device will find the printer and IP address, but will not completely load....  Get hung up at 20% on the last step.
I can access the printer on 192.168.1.5 and go into it, so how come the software cannot find it?  I can also load a generic Windows 7 driver in Device Manager which allows me to print, but the scan function is lost.  This printer is the biggest piece of S%&^%&*^% I ever laid eyes on.
To make matters worse.  I got a person on the phone that had no clue...... and after 1.5hrs, he couldn't even get the software loaded to see the printer and scanner after a complete 30 min uninstall reinstall.  Which doesn't answer the question of why it looses connection.  I can uninstall and reinstall - Didn't need him for that.  I even assigned a static Ip outside of the DHCP range and turned off power save mode.  This also happens with Hardwire connection.  Then he mentions BS about not working with Lexmark and Brother printers., which I also had shared, but the software was on another computer.  These were merely Windows 7 drivers  Little did he know until I told him that I  just loaded that software last night and this problem has been going on for 3 weeks now.  Long before loading other printer drivers.....Is that the just of HP's support?  Blame your sorry products on someone else.  I am not having it.......All of the sudden the remote desktop connection and the phone conversation both drops misteriously.  This was right after he could not get the reinstalled software to see the printer.  HP and their suppot sucks.  I have owned many HP products..... • HP OfficeJet 8500 A909g and Windows 7 -- GRRRRRRR!!!!

So, in September 2010 I purchased my HP printer and for 2 months (or so) my capability to print wirelessly worked fine with my Dell laptop running Windows 7.  All of a sudden one day, my printer was no longer connected.  I of course went to hp.com to download the drivers and install them, and it never installed successfully.  For 2 weeks I played to download, install, install-failed-try-again game for weeks.  Then one day, it worked--for all of 2 days before I started the cycle again.  I tried downloading the HP diagnostic utility, the HP Wireless Wizard--everything I could on the HP support site--all to absolutely no avail.  This "game" continued off and on for months.  In October, I tried uninstalling my HP completely from my laptop and reinstalling it from the CD that came with the printer; didn't work.  I removed that and went back to the HP site to download the full version of the software; that didn't work.  I spent 2 hours on the phone with an HP rep one day, pretty much doing all that I had done for the past year--again to no avail.  I spent another 2 hours on the phone with another HP rep another day, doing the same thing and coincidentally it worked--but only for another 2 days or so.  I also have a desktop running Windows XP.  So I figured I'd try to install the printer on that--and it worked!  So there must be a problem between HP and Windows 7.
I finally decided to connect my printer to my router and connect my print to my laptop via USB.  I can print periodically and I can scan via the HP document Manager, but I cannot access HP Solution Center.  When I start HP Solution Center, the IP address displayed is COMPLETELY different from the actual IP address of my printer.  Then it goes right to a window telling me that my installation wasn't successful.  I tried to access the Solution Center's IP address (140.0.18.23) and I always get a "Connection timed out" response.
Has anyone else experienced this?  Even more importantly, has anyone found a way to fix this?  What the heck is going on???

Did a help desk ever ask you to check specific UDP or TCPIP ports in your firewall to ensure HP communication paths?
They are not usually open in XPSP3 or W7SP1 even after you load the drivers or web mail.  In the updates they even state you must connect to update the device using USB even if you have LAN wired share with a static IP.
I  have three W7 devices (OEM W7, refurbished W7 with updates from WXP (32 bit) and single license W7 on 64 bit hardware) and each of those have had rejections and failures on trying to load the print drivers and the solution center (version 14.0).

  • Installation big problem with Officejet 8500

    My problem is the following:
I have a LAN on which are connected 2 PC's with XP, 1 PC with Vista and one with Windows 2000. I want to install a printer on the router using TCP/IP and cable.
The installation of the Officejet 8500 was without problem on the XT machines.
It went well on the Vista machine. Then it lost the printer. I had to go back to the pre-installation stage and do it again. Now it seems OK.
The problem is on Windows 2000. The installation process goes up to the point where the printer is found and the IP address and printer ID correct.
Then the sofware tries to configure the printer and it fails (the printer configuration has failed). I have tried again a lot of time without success.
The only way out is to proceed with installation and try to establish the connection to the printer later. I tried it also, without success.
The contacted HP support seems to be lost with the problem.
    Can somebody help me?
    Many thanks,

When you say that after half an hour it told you that you "could not" do you mean that the install process never began (no "installing..." progress bar) or that it did start but subsequently quit, reporting failure?
If the first, try booting from your G4's Tiger install disk & running its copy of Disk Utility -- don't do an install but instead choose that application from the "Utilities" menu of the installer application. Perform both the disk repair (first) & then permissions repair. Quit Disk Utility, choose the Startup Disk utility (from the same menu), select your G4's drive & restart.
If the second, your Tiger OS has been compromised with some (but not all) the Leopard components, which is why startup hangs. For this, start off as above but just run the disk repair from the Tiger installer disk, then perform an Archive & Install from its installer. This should restore the Tiger OS to a functional state, but you will have to reapply any OS 10.4 updates released after the release date of the Tiger installer disk. A good way to save time with that is by downloading the latest combo updater (10.4.11) & applying it.
In either case, it is a good idea to backup your home folder(s) from your G4 to prevent data loss should anything go wrong. Target disk mode, as already described, is a good way to access the G4's contents even if you can't boot it into an OS.

  • HP Officejet Pro 8500 A909g - scanning

I am running windows 7, 64 bit OS, and and have a wireless 4 in 1 Printer, copier fax and scanner HP Office Jet Pro 8500 A909g. I can print fine to the printer as it prints to an IP address 192.168.0.04, but when I try to scan a document it won't complete the operation because it says it can't find the scanner. When I click on the Scan router it tells me it is set for an IP address of 192.168.0.02, and there appears no way to amend that to 04. Anyone suggest anything, other than uninstall and re-install the 4 in 1? I have used the HP print and scan doctor to no avail!

    Hi there,
I understand you're having an issue scanning with your Officejet 8500 A909G printer. I'm sorry to hear this has been happening to you, but will certainly do my best to help!
When you ran the HP Print and Scan Doctor, were you able to run the Fix Printing and the Fix Scanning functions?
Did it give any errors at all? Or did everything check out okay?
Once I have this information I should be able to instruct you what to try next.

  • Officejet 8500 Flashing Firmware

I have just updated the firmware using a direct USB connection, I could not get it to work via a wired network. The printed test page shows the firmware to still be the old DLM1FN1006BR version, even though the install completed. Any thoughts anyone? The self test page shows the correct printer at the top Offiecjet pro 8500 A909g Series, Win 7 shows a 2nd printer now in the control panel,, HP734BEC ( HP Officejet Pro 8500 A909g ).
I am dong this because the Show HP Solution Center icon does not open the center, I get an error that the software installation did not complete. The printer is and has always worked fine, but if I do not close that Solution Center icon on the taskbar, in Win 7 64 bit, it crashes windows. This is the only problem I have with this machine.
    Thanks for any help.

    Hello Wawa,
    Welcome to the HP Forums!
I understand you're receiving a couple of issues with the Officejet 8500 A909G. I will do my best to assist you! If the firmware said it was successful, then the firmware version should of changed. You can try resetting the printer for more than 60 seconds. Leave the printer turned on> Disconnect the power cord from the back of the printer. Try printing another test page to verify if this made a difference.
Since you're receiving a message from Solution Center stating the software installation is not complete, then follow this thread from @SuperMario1 on: "HP solution center cannot run because your device installation is not complete".
Please post your results, as I will be looking forward to hearing from you. Have a great day!

    Hi SM1251,
Welcome to the HP Support forums.  I understand that you would like to print from your Android tablet to your Officejet 8500 A909g.

I have included a document on how to do that.  I have also included a document with the FAQs for the HP ePrint mobile app. For additional reference I have also included a document about printing using Android 4.4 KitKat if that is the Android version your tablet is running.

  • HP Officejet Pro 8500 A909g seems to destroy printheads

My wife and I have identical “HP Officejet Pro 8500 A909g Series” (S/N: [Edited for Personal Information] for my printer) printers bought within several months of each other. We have owned the printers since late 2009.
My printer quit printing cyan completely and magenta partially. I replaced both ink cartridges, which did not fix the problem.  I then removed the printheads and cleaned the electrical contacts with denatured alcohol and also cleaned the contacts in the printer.  This did not fix the problem either.
So I “borrowed” the printheads from my wife’s identical printer and placed it into my printer. That didn’t fix the problem either.  When I put the borrowed printheads back into my wife’s printer, it immediately displayed the same symptoms as my printer (it wouldn’t print cyan at all and partially did not print magenta.
The “Self Test Diagnostic Page” of both printers state that the printheads are “Good” in both printers.
During the “Align Printer” task, the LCD on the printer displays a message indicating that the printhead(s) are bad.
Question: is it possible that the printer itself is faulty and causing the printheads to permanently not work correctly?
Second Question: If my printer is bad, what other similar models of all-in-one printers use the same ink cartridges?

    Hello Neil-in-Tucson,
    Welcome to the HP Forums.
I see that you are having an issue with the Printheads on your printer.
Are you seeing any error codes on the printers display screen?
Please make sure that you have the printer power cable connected directly to a wall outlet and not a power bar/strip. Here is a document that uses a LaserJet printer as an example but it is meant for HP products in general. Please click on the following link that explains the Issues when Connected to an Uninterruptible Power Supply/Power Strip/Surge Protector.
