HP Officejet Pro 8500A Periodically resets itself

About every 20 minutes the screen on my HP Officejet Pro 8500A goes blank, then redisplays, followed by the carriage shifting sounding like the printer is resetting itself to print a job.  I'm set up on a WiFi connection and have no screen blanking set.  This resetting is VERY disconcerting as it happens with no warning.  How can I stop this periodic reset?

Hi HevnLgh,
I completed all of the steps you recommended and they did not solve the problem.  However two days later the problem has disappeared.
The problem was not that the printer was powering off.  Also it was not connected to a computer in any manner other than WiFi, though it did have a phone line connection to send/receive FAXes.  The printer display was blanking for a few seconds, followed by redisplay and carriage movement that sounded just like when it was getting ready to print.  However no printout resulted, nor was there any print job pending.
Now the display goes dim periodically for a few seconds, but comes back on.  However there is no longer any carriage movement or other noises.  Since the sudden noise was always the annoying factor I'm satisfied that the issue is resolved.

I am still having this problem with my printer. It worked for a few months just fine, now it hangs every time it sits for more than a few minutes.
    {Content Removed: Confidential information}
When I do this, nothing happens. If I press & hold the power button the power light comes on, but the screen stays blank. Pressing the button combos you suggest on the blank screen does nothing. Am I doing something wrong?
    UPDATE:
    OK, I got into the menu. I didn't have to do the 5 second power button thing. {Content Removed}
I have been playing around in this new menu and have discovered that if I place the printer in MFG mode, it responds and prints even after going to sleep (but the print quality is bad). When I place it back in USER mode, it goes back to not printing after a few minutes. For now, I am just running the printer in MFG mode unless I need to print something with high quality. I really hope they can get a firmware update to fix this thing or it's going to be my new boat anchor soon.

  • HP Officejet Pro 8500A Plus requires resetting between each print or copy task

HP Officejet Pro 8500A Plus  or  HP Officejet Pro 8500 A910
Windows 7 Home Premium operating system
    Problem:
Upon receiving a print command, the printer remains silent and displays "Now Printing" on the printer screen.  Nothing happens -- it does not print even after waiting several minutes.  Seems the doc is locked in the que.  Only temporary solution thus far is to cancel the print job and then hold in the power button for 30 to 60 seconds and then release it at which time the unit powers off.  then turn the unit back on and let it boot up.  Upon receiving a new print command it will then print.  But same problem then occurs next time it receives a print command.  I have also run the HP Print and Scan Doctor which indicated a device detection problem and suggested unplugging the power cord.  After doing so and selecting "retry" the HP Print and Scan Doctor indicated it fixed the problem ----- but it did not (printer would still not print until once again the power button was held in for 30-60 seconds as described above.  Upon calling HP tech support they told me i needed to buy a new printer because this one was too old! (is 3 years too old to expect the printer to still function???)  Any help would be appreciated!

  • HP Officejet pro 8500a prints endless stream of un-ordered blank sheets with one character on them

My HP Officejet Pro 8500a worked fine until about 2 weeks ago (it is about 3 months old).  It began printing endlessly (during a period that no documents are being sent to the printer - I want to be clear this is not in regard to ORDERED documents from any of the computers).  It prints out a sheet of paper with a D in the first character spot in the left top corner, then spits out the paper.  It keeps going until it runs out of paper.  The only way to stop it is to 1) turn it off  2)keep pressing the "cancel print" button (every 5-10 seconds) or 3) take out the paper.  This of course is a hassle because while actually trying to print a document (which does come out fine), we have to load fresh paper and lose several pieces while the printer continues it's freak out before printing our ORDERED document.
Spent almost 2 1/2 hours on tech support yesterday - it took 2 hours to MAKE IT CLEAR that the printer was PRINTING ON IT'S OWN.  The tech kept trying to "fix" the documents I was printing (which are FINE, as I said).  Finally, I was told that a higher level tech would have to call me back - but looking through forums, it appears that's an empty promise and no point in waiting for assitance.
    Any suggestions?

Let's start by resetting the printer.  Turn it off, hold the # and 6 keys while and a bit after turning it back on.

  • My printer officejet pro 8500A plus won't go into power or screen saver mode with XP Prof/

why doesn't my printer officejet pro 8500A plus go into power save or screen saver mode with windows XP Professional?
I have updated the firmware, i've put the printer through a power cycle, I did a semifull reset. I checked the boxes to on for power save and screensaver. Yet my printer runs through the product tour all day long

the only place I can find to enable power and screen savings is on the printer LCD itself. Is there somewhere else to look for this option? I look at printer HP on windows go to properties and there is no way to enable power saver mode.

  • HP Officejet Pro 8500A Plus printing issues

I have been having two new issues suddenly (within the past 2 weeks) with my HP Officejet Pro 8500A Plus. I am trying to print from my iMac 27 inch running OS.X 10.8.4 Both the mac and the printer are connected to a wireless network via an Xfinity Wireless Gateway. I have just replaced the ink cartridges in the printer but am unable to print black & white. In fact everything is comming out kinda pink. I have posted on HP's support site and was told to
    Download and install this: http://support.apple.com/kb/DL907
    Restart your Mac.
    Reset the printing system:
    - Go to System Preferences > Print & Scan
    - Right (or control) click in the rectangle listing your printers and select Reset Printing System.
WARNING - this will delete ALL of your printers!
    - Select the plus sign to re-add a printer. Select the Defualt tab on the top of the window. Look for the printer, select it and then next to the "Use" pulldown, select the printer model (not AirPrint). Wait until the "Add" button becomes available. Click it.
Having done that initially my problem was solved. But now I'm having the problem again. I went through the above steps again, but still not able to print. Are there any suggestions for a fix. Is anyone else seen this issue? Is there a particular printer manufacturer that works well with Apple. Because at this point I have a large paperweight that is of no use to me!

The fact that it was solved and then came back points to some (unknown) issue with your Mac's software.
Try these generic fixes first (and then do the reset printing system and re-add again):

  • GOT A HP OFFICEJET PRO 8500A PLUS; I MUST RE-ENTER WIRELESS SETTINGS EVRYTIME I USE IT??

I just got an OfficeJet Pro 8500a Plus, on the touchscreen i have to set-up (username and password) the wireless connection to my wireless SSID; and that confirms the connection ok. At that point i can print no problem, scan and fax.
The problem arises when my wireless router fails and restarts, the next time i use my printer it says it is not connected and i must reconfigure from the touch screen again username and password. Is there no way to have these settings entered permanently so if my router resets or whatever i do not have to re-enter all settings? Thanks for the help and hopefully good news.
    Thank you so much

This is strange.  Does the printer ever lose power?
Let's set a static IP address for the printer:
    - Print a Network Config Page from the front of the printer. Note the printer's IP address.
    - Type that IP address into a browser to reveal the printer's internal settings.
    - Choose the Networking tab, then Wireless along the left side, then the IPv4 tab.
    - On this screen you want to set a Manual IP. You need to set an IP address outside the range that the router automatically sets (called the DHCP range). You can change the DHCP range of the router using its internal settings page.
    - Use 255.255.255.0 for the subnet (unless you know it is different, if so, use that)
    - Enter your router's IP (on the Network Config Page) for the gateway and first DNS. Leave the second one blank.
    - Click 'Apply'.
Now, shut down the router and printer, start the router, wait, then start the printer.
After this you may need to redo 'Add a Printer' using the new IP address.

  • Alignment failure - HP Officejet Pro 8500A Plus

I have an HP Officejet Pro 8500A Plus all-in-one printer. The printheads failed and I bought authentic HP printheads (two), installed them and I still get the alignment failure error. The print quality is excellent on all quality and alignment reports that I have printed. What is the problem and what is the solution?
    Craigranderson

Hi craigranderson, and welcome to the HP Forums.
I see you are experiencing an alignment failure.  I would like to try and help.
I would suggest performing a power reset. Disconnect the power cord from the printer and the power outlet, then wait 60 seconds. After 60 seconds, plug the printer back in. Ensure you plug the printer directly to a wall outlet. Make sure to bypass any sort of surge protector or power bar.
I would also recommend following the steps in this document on an 'Alignment failed' Error Message Displays on the All-in-One.
Good luck and please let me know the results of your troubleshooting steps. Thank you for posting on the HP Forums.

  • Officejet pro 8500A wireless radio is not functioning

Have an OfficeJet Pro 8500A.  Wireless connection stopped working.  Tried restarting printer, router, and computer per troubleshooting suggestions in manual.  No joy.  Wireless Network Test Report gives a 'Wireless Working' status of 'FAIL'. Troubleshooting results at top of report says "The wireless radio is not functioning. Contact HP Support."
I found a solution to this problem in the forum for a C7280.  It is to reset the printer by turning it off, and holding the # and 6 keys while and a bit after turning it on.  Later on, there is a comment by another user saying the reset solution also works for the Officejet 8500.
O.K. so I'd like to try reseting my printer, but don't know how to do it.  There are no "keys" on this model.  I've searched through the user guide (searched on the term 'reset' in the PDF version) with no results.  Can anyone help by either telling me how to use the reset feature on the OfficeJet Pro 8500A, or another solution to the wireless radio not functioning problem that I can try?
    Thanks,

Thank you for your suggestions.  I appreciate your help.
I had previously verified that the wireless radio was on.  The wireless radio test report confirmed it was on.
I had not used the network settings reset function as I was focused on looking for a "printer reset" capability.  Based on your suggestion I used the network settings reset and then printed the HP Network Configuration Page.  This confirmed the settings had been reset.  However this test also checks for all available 802.11 networks.  The report shows the number of networks discovered as 0.  Based on this, I'm assuming the wireless is still not working.

  • HP Officejet Pro 8500A constantly changing IP

Hi, we have the HP Officejet Pro 8500A Plus e-All-in-One Printer - A910g, Model name: CM756A. We set it up in our peer to peer workgroup (non domain) Windows network wirelessly. But every time there is a need to reset the router (when we have internet problems- several times a week) the printer also resets its IP to something else, in spite of me setting it to have a permanent IP with these instructions
    http://www.ehow.com/how_8265636_set-officejet-pro-8500-a909.html
How can I make sure the officejet stays on an IP no matter what? every time it changes the ip, it of course stops working for everyone on the network. We have a wireless Edimax BR-6524N router getting the internet from a DSL line with PPoE.
Could this be the solution? turning on "Enable Static DHCP Leases" (currently set to automatic DNS/IP configuration) and setting the IP and Mac address of the printer as a static lease?
    Thanks

    Hi,
The steps provided by the linked document are different and intended for a different model (Officejet Pro 8500 (A909)
In order to set a manual IP follow the following steps:
Touch the Right Arrow ( ) on the product's control panel to display the second navigation screen.
Touch the Network icon ( ).
Touch the Up Arrow ( ) or the Down Arrow ( ) to find and then select Advanced Setup.
Touch the Up Arrow ( ) or the Down Arrow ( ) to find and then select P Settings
Touch Manual and follow the screen to update the current IP Address. I would recommend you to check an higher value by changing the last part only, that in order to avoid any conflict in the future (e.g. 10.0.0.70)

  • HP OfficeJet Pro 8500A Plus - Wifi connection keeps being lost??

Hi - please can someone help?
HP OfficeJet Pro 8500A Plus all-in-one printer - connected at home to laptop via cable (works fine) and PC (Windows Vista) via router and wifi.
Wifi is enabled and connected (light on printer on).  Printer is set on PC as default.  Printer has previously worked with these settings perfectly fine via the PC, but has lately developed intermittant dropping of the wifi connection.
Sometimes a PC reboot works, but this is tedious and should not be necessary - does anyone have any thoughts on why this keeps happening and some things I could try to reset - have done all what I thought were obvious steps, such as reseting the wifi network via the printer.  Everything works for a short while and then just stops.???

  • HP Officejet Pro 8500a software stalls after printing one document,

Hi, HP Officejet Pro 8500a, Product No CM755A. It used to work well, but now I can't rely on it to print more than one document.  If there is a delay of several minutes before I try to use it again, then no print occurs: the screen on the printer says e.g. 'copying document' or 'printing page 1 of 1', but the printer makes no sound and stays at that stage for ever.
Can I do a soft or hard reset of the printer software in the printer, or solve it some other way?  At present I have to turn it off and then on again, wasting ink.
I can take it back and replace it under extended warranty, but don't want to do that if there is a simpler way to fix it.
    Regards

    Hello Rtdnorseman,
Thanks for the post.  It is possible to reset the printer to clear some of these issues.  I've included a link below that walks through the steps.  Also, ensure that you are plugged directly to an outlet, not into a power strip or surge protector.  Good Luck!

  • EPrint for HP Officejet Pro 8500A works, but ePrint account closed my sign-in

I have been using ePrint with my HP Officejet Pro 8500A for 2 year and it works great.  After the latest software update, I tried to log in to my ePrint account to add another authorized user, but the system has forgotten my E-mail address.  I know I am using the correct E-mail address, because I get HP mail reminders for my printer at that address and it is the only one I use for business, but I can't even trigger a forgotten password because the new ePrint says I don't exist.
If I create a new account for the same printer, will that conflict?  I have the printer's E-mail address and use it regularly, so I know it is properly connected to my wireless and that it talks to ePrint.  Is there any way to recover an account if you have the printer's E-mail address and serial number?
    Thank you!

    Hi David,
Click the Forgot Password link on the Sign In page and provide your emai address to reset the password.
    https://h30495.www3.hp.com/user_login?next=%2Fc%2F46193%2FUS%2Fen%2F
If the email address is not recognized, try resetting the password through the HP Snapfish site.. that may work if the accound has been marked to be associated with HP Snapfish during the registration:
    http://www1.snapfish.com/snapfish/forgotpassword/module=true
Last but not least, you may migrated your account with the new HP Connected service, then you may try retrieve your password below:
    https://toran.hpconnected.com/oauth/ui/resetpwdpage
The sites above should cover any possible account association and I believe that one of them should recognize your email address and allow resetting the password.

What do I do when I get the message my printer is not connected when I want to print wirelessly.? HP Officejet Pro 8500A e-All-in-One.  I have a macintosh computer using snow leopard.  I have used the printer for 6 months.  Nothing has changed.  I shut off the printer and turned it on.  The internet is working altough I will turn it off and on.  What do I do next?  Thank you.

  • Hp officejet pro 8500a - could print wirelessly previously, but now does not print documents.

Our HP Officejet Pro 8500A was successfully networked via our wireless network to both computers in our household.  We were able to print from both, as well as IPod Touch.  We have not changed any settings, etc.; however, the printer is no longer printing.
We are able to print a test document from the printer; however, we are receiving the following error message on the printer:
    Connection Error
The printer was unable to connect to the server.  Check your internet connection and try again.  Would you like to retry?
When we retry, it just brings the error message back up.
When we check the printer status on the computers, it shows that the printer is connected, but is in idle status.
Please advise what would be causing this issue, and how to correct it.
