HP OfficeJet Pro 8600 All-In-One Inkjet Printer

Hello, I have an HP OfficeJet Pro 8600 All-In-One Inkjet Printer.  It started out working fine, but the touchscreen got lighter and lighter and would finally go out.  Now, I cannot see the screen at all and therefore am unable to use the printer.  I tried to delete the printer from my computer and reload the driver, but the driver requires that I use the touchscreen to initiate installation of the wireless capabilities and so forth.  Without being able to have the touchscreen light up, I am unable to see and follow the directions to hook it back up to the computer.  Any ideas?  Does HP make a replacement touchscreen for this product?  I bought this one because I have another one that works perfectly at home and was hoping to use this one at work.  Thanks in advance for any help anyone can give.

Hello there! Welcome to the forums @Wayne3
I saw your post about how the display screen on your Officejet 8600 has gotten lighter and lighter until the display was unreadable. I have a few ideas in mind that might help you.
Update the firmware on the printer with a USB cable plugged into the printer, and computer.
Click here to download the firmware update: HP Officejet Pro 8600 N911a Firmware
Try a power reset and ensure the printer is plugged in directly to the wall outlet, avoiding power bars and surge protectors. This ensures the printer is receiving full power and may help greatly.
Press the Power button to turn on the product.
With the product turned on, disconnect the power cord from the rear of the product.
Unplug the power cord from the wall outlet.
Wait at least 15 seconds.
Plug the power cord back into the wall outlet.
Reconnect the power cord to the rear of the product.
If the product does not turn on by itself, press the Power button to turn it on.
I hope the steps help you! If the screen continues to have the same problem, give us a call to see what your printer options are:

  • Hp officejet pro 8600 all in one prints but won't scan

I have recently moved house and changed my wireless router from BT to Virgin.
    I am running OS X 10.9.5
I am able to print from my mac without issue, however, it has stopped scanning. I have managed to get it to work twice on isolated instances but it won't work consistently.
I have unistalled the software and reinstalled via the HP download page but when I open HP Scan and click scan it asks me to choose which scanner - mine is selected, it then says preparing to scan and it does that for ages until it says it can't get a connection.
My printe r is a HP Officejet Pro 8600 All-in-one N911g - I am not bothered that much about scanning from the printer to the computer (I have tried to enable this option and it won't let me) I just want to be able to open HP Scan and press scan and it scan on my computer.
Any advice appreciated - thank you

Hi there @Steph390 , welcome to the forums!
I have some suggestions for you to hopefully correct the scanning issue you are having. Please feel free to reply back and let me know the results!
    1. Try power cycling the network devices:
Turn off the printer and computer and unplug the router for 1 minute (do not press any buttons on the router).
Plug the router back in and wait another minute, next turn on the printer and computer.
    2. Mac OS X: How to reset the printing system
    3. Repair disk permissions
    4. Restart your computer.
    5. Re-add the printer
Once the printer is connected on the network, follow these steps to maintain the wireless connection, normally a static IP will help out quite a bit: Printer Does Not Maintain Wireless Connection
    Good luck to you

  • Officejet Pro 8600 all in one installation on dest top with AMD64 chip set and Window 7

Can't install an HP Pro 8600 all in one with full features on a Desktop with windows 7 64 bit OS, PC has an AMD chip set, connection is wireless.
This printer is replacing an HP Pro 8500 all in one that failed. HP's only solution was to upgrade to the 8600. All 8500 software was removed before attempting to install the 8600.
The installation recognizes the printer & IP address. In the last step of the setup the network connection is not recognized. When I try to add a printer in Windows, the Microsoft drivers are installed and the printer works fine, but no scan or fax.
I had success installing this wireless setup on 2 desktops (windows 7 & XP OS) and a laptop running VISTA. All of these have Intel CPU's. The installation completed fine.
The HP Installation CD has an AMD64 folder (with "hpinkins5912"), but no instruction on setup or updating AMD drivers.

    Hey @mech3320 ,
Thank you for taking the time out of your day to ask that question on the HP Forums today!
I understand that you are having some trouble with the driver download on your AMD chipset but not your Intel one.
I recommend that you try the web download of the drivers after you uninstall the ones that you tried form the CD.

Let me know if the web drivers work better for you or not.

  • HP Officejet Pro 8600 All in One printer - printing wirelessly from an IPAD

I'm trying to connect a HP Officejet Pro 8600 to our university campus wireless network for the purposes of printing wirelessly from an IPAD.  The printer finds the wireless network when going through wireless wizard setup but gets a message that the wireless network is using security that is not supported.
    The campus wireless network uses:
    Security type: WPA2-Enterprise
    Encryption type: AES
Can anyone tell me if these are supported by this model printer?

    Hey ibebry,
The printer is designed to be used with WPA2 - Personal and not the Enterprise version.  From the wiki artricle on WPA encryption:
WPA-Personal Also referred to as WPA-PSK (Pre-shared key) mode, it is designed for home and small office networks and doesn't require an authentication server. Each wireless network device authenticates with the access point using the same 256-bit key generated from a password or passphrase.
WPA-Enterprise Also referred to as WPA-802.1X mode, and sometimes just WPA (as opposed to WPA-PSK). It is designed for enterprise networks and requires a RADIUS authentication server. This requires a more complicated setup, but provides additional security (e.g. protection against dictionary attacks on short passwords). An Extensible Authentication Protocol (EAP) is used for authentication, which comes in different flavors.
If the network is using WPA-Enterprise, then most likely the 8600 will not be able to connect.  Hope this helps.

When you said "It does print out a test page when I try it and will print stuff that the PC says to but will not let me print anything" are you meaning that it will print PC test pages but not from say Word?
I'd recommend that you download and run the HP Print and Scan Doctor and let me know if it finds any issues. If it does, please follow any suggestions it may make to get a resolution.

  • HP Officejet Pro 8600 all-in-one printer Cancels Print in Middle of Job

My Printer began working fine, now it is suddenly stalling and cancelling the print job in the middle of printing.  Please let me know what I can do to fix this issue.

    Hi @mgsamuel,
I would be happy to help you with your Officejet 8600. I understand it was working well, now suddenly it is stalling and print jobs are cancelling on their own.
Running the Print and Scan Doctor might help. The HP Print and Scan Doctor is a free utility (tool) that helps to quickly diagnose and resolve common printing, scanning and connectivity issues including but not limited to:
    Connectivity:
USB: Verifies that the USB connection from your computer to the HP product is working correctly.
Network: Verifies that the network connection between your computer and your network is working correctly.
Device Status Test: Checks for device errors such as out of paper, paper jams, carriage stalls, and paper feed issues, and then provides instructions for fixing the error.
Driver Check: Checks for missing or corrupt driver files.
Device Manager: Checks for problems in Device Manager that would prevent printing.
Device Online: Checks if the product has been paused or set to offline, and then sets the status back to online if necessary.
Print Queue: Checks for and clears pending print jobs in the print queue (a log of print jobs waiting to print).
Port Match: Checks the port settings for the HP product.
Device Conflicts: Checks for conflicts with other drivers, such as other printer brands.
Ink Issues: Checks the cartridges and ink levels for issues that affect print quality.
Print Settings: Checks and adjusts the print quality settings.
Test Print: Prints a test page for print quality evaluation, and provides options for cleaning and aligning the printhead if necessary.
Scan Tests: Checks the scan mechanism, drivers, and registry entries.

Click here to download and run the Print and Scan Doctor> >>>>> www.hp.com/go/tools
If that does not resolve the issue, post back and let me know if there are any symbols other than green check marks and what they are next to of course. The wrench is not always easy to spot as the wrench and the check mart are in the green circle.
If you see only green check marks (), the tool did not find any problems.
If you see green wrenches (), the utility identified an issue and corrected it automatically.
If you see yellow exclamation points (), the test failed and required user action, but the step was skipped.
If you see a red X (), follow the on-screen instructions to resolve the issue.

  • Installation Problems with Apple MBA and OfficeJet Pro 8600 All-in-One

I've had no issues with 8600 and MBA on my home network for over a year.  Today, the computer couldn't find the printer repeatedly without rebooting the printer everytime I sent a print job.  Got frustrated and thought I'd uninstall the printer and redownload and reinstall, so I did that.  HP sent the Mavericks 12.34.37.dmg file and I installed with no issues.  But it didn't open the Utility file like it said it would, so I opened it and clicked 'set up new device' to which it never found the printer at all.  Searching the HP site, I also found and downloaded and installed the HP PrintersDriver 3.0.dmg and still have the same problems.  My other computers in the house are finding the same printer and printing fine.  My MBA has no printer installed now, and the Utility software can't find it.  What do I do?  I need to be printing right now, and have never had issues like this before.  My printer serical number is [edited Serial Number by Moderator].  Please give me some direction and hope.
    Thank you.

    Hi @MacBimmer ,
I see that you are experiencing issues adding the printer over the wireless network back onto Yosemite. I will certainly do my best to help you.
Power cycle the router and restart the Mac and printer.
Follow these steps to Verify and Repair the Disk Permissions.
On the Apple menu bar, click Go, then click Utilities.
From the sub menu on the right, double-click Disk Utility .
From the list on the left, select your drive or active partition.
Click the First Aid tab, then click Verify then Repair Disk Permissions.
    Restart your computer.
    Reset The Printing System:
Note: This will delete all the printers listed and you will have to add them back in again.
Go to the Apple, System Preferences, Printers and Scanners, hold down the control button on the keyboard and click your mouse in the white area on the left side of the window, select Reset Printing System when it comes up and put in the Mac password. Then click the + sign, select the printer,  then click on the add button. (you might have to click on the dropdown to select the printer name from the list)
If you are having network issues, then add the printer through the IP Protocal.
After clicking the + button, select the IP across the top, type in the printer's IPv4 address, select jet direct below and then Apply.
    Test the printer.
If you need further assistance, just let me know.
    Have a nice day!
    Thank You.

  • OfficeJet Pro 8600 All-in-one can't fax

Using Arris 722G cable modem.  Connected line-1 to 1-line and phone handset to 2-ext.  Phone gets dial tone; voice calling working fine.  Select FAX from printer front panel, phone-pad appears.  Pick up telephone handset, printer screen changes to "Fax Mode" selection screen --- so printer can tell that phone is off-hook.  Put telephone back on hook, FAX screen changes back to dial.  Dial a number, send FAX, can hear "click", but no dial tone detected by FAX machine. What other settings, or tests should I run?

HI , Yes, the 4 wire phone cord could be part of the problem. Continue to read through the document I provided. Solution one: Check the fax connectionsIf the dial tone is  not being detected you need to check the connections and phone line. I would recommend getting a 2 wire phone cord to replace the 4 wire. Solution one: Check the fax connectionsUse the following steps to check the physical connections, and then test the fax.Step 1: Check the physical connectionsDisconnect the telephone cord from the printer, and then examine the connector on the end of the cord. Make sure that the cord has only two wires. If you see four wires, replace the cord with one containing only two wires.Figure : Example of a two-wire telephone connectorFigure : Example of four-wire telephone connectorImportant! HP recommends you use the phone cord that came with your printer to connect the printer to the telephone wall jack. Otherwise, you might not be able to fax successfully. This special phone cord has only two copper wires. If you have the cord that shipped with the HP printer and it is long enough, use that cord.If you must use a cord with four wires, use a converter. A converter allows a cord with four wires to work with a device that requires a cord with two wires. If you must use a cord with four wires, use a converter. I'm unable to air print from my IPad2, since I updated printer. Can still print from my wireless computer, but Not IPad

I would make sure that the printer and the iPad are still on the same network by checking the settings on the iPad. Then make sure that Bluetooth is turned off. Also make sure tha that the option to join other networks is turned on for the iPad.
After that, I would turn both the printer and the Apple device off at the same time and then power them back on at the same time to make sure that they are synced.  Then try to print from the iPad again.
If still having the issues I would check to make sure that the router's firm ware is up to date and if so I would then do a hard reset to the printer. No user settings are lost with a hard reset (such as the wireless settings) to do that:
     1. With the printer plugged directly into a wall outlet, and turned on, unplug the cord from the rear of the printer.
    2. Then unplug the cord from the wall socket.
    3. Wait at least 30-60 seconds
    4. Plug the power cord back into the wall socket first. If the cord has a module in it, make sure that the light on the module is lit up and then plug cord back into the rear of the printer
    5. The printer should power back on by itself, but if not use the power button on front panel to turn machine back on.
Once printer is back on, try to print from the Apple device again.
If still unable to print I would then try to reset the router by unplugging it, leaving it unplugged for about 10 seconds, then plugging it back in. You will have to wait for the router to finish its initialization process (lights will blink) before you can successfully try to AirPrint again.

  • HP Officejet Pro 8600 all-in-one (Paperfeed problem)

Occassionally, I am having a problem, where I am getting a message that says I need to load paper in the printer. However, paper is already there.  I have removed the paper, checked the guidelines and made sure they are in place, removed the duplex and replaced it.  Today, no matter what I do, I am still getting this message.  I added more paper to make sure there is enough paper, and am still getting the same message -- out of paper.  But paper is in the printer.  Please help.

  • HP Office Jet Pro 8600 all in one

I fax documents from word with my printer. Every once in a while, but more frequently as of late, the document will fax, shows send in the log, I hear the the fax completely send and hang up, but then it will fax it over and over, even though I only set it to fax one time. Only way then to stop it from sending is to turn off printer and then I either have to reboot my computer or log off to get it to clear. When computer comes back up, I turn printer back on and it is ready for use. It has done this since I bought it, but like I said seems more frequent.
It is an HP office jet pro 8600 all in one, running on Windows 8.1. It is hard wired, not running wirelesslym with desktop. Anybody have any clues as to what is causing this and how to fix it.  It is so frustrating.  Thanks.

    Hi LFoskey,
Does the printer send multiple faxes when you fax directly from the printer, or only when you fax from Word?
    You can check for a firmware update in cause the issue is being caused by the printer itself;

    Hello,
I have an Officejet Pro 8620 all in one.  I was scanning a few items last night and the first few items came out in color fine. Then all of the sudden as I continued to scan the next few images would only scan in black and white.  I cannot seem to get the scanner to scan in color again.  How can I fix this?  I did not change any settings or anything while I was scanning so I do not know why the sudden change to black and white?  I am on a Mac computer with all newest operating system etc.

  • Paper Jam error message due to broken gear on Officejet Pro 8500 all-in-one printer

3 year old HP Officejet Pro 8500 all-in-one printer (haven't used it much). Keeps telling "Paper Jam" although there is no paper jammed anywhere (searched meticulously with a flashlight after watching HP's tutorial videos on how to clear paper jams). I started searching on the Internet and found a couple of related videos on Youtube that pointed me in the right direction:https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=PMFW1RRlDHEhttps://www.youtube.com/watch?v=EwbF2Vs_0gQ  I could hear a clicking noise on that area of the printer each time I turned it on, so I carefully took the black cap apart that was hidding the gear, and confirmed I had the same problem as in the youtube videos above. See picture below showing the white plastic gear part that has a large crack which causes the Paper Jam error message and renders the printer unusable. After Googling a little bit, seems like a relatively common issue and wonder why such a part like that is not made of a stronger material like metal (planned obsolescence maybe?). Does anybody know if there is a way of replacing the broken gear?  (I really care for the environment and I would like to avoid having to throw the relatively new and expensive all-in-way printer away) Thanks a lot in advance for the advice!
