HP Officejet Pro 8600 not scanning to computer

My HP Officejet Pro 8600 is not scanning to my computer HP computer, Windows 7. This has worked fine for quite some time, not sure what happened to change it. It is a wireless connection but the printer works, and I can scan to a memory card just not to the computer. The printer software doesn't give me the option of opening the scanner. Another program said the scanner is not enabled but nobody has touched the computer! Any suggestions in language I can understand would be greatly appreciated!

Too bad nobody answered yet. It sounds like some simple troubleshooting can help narrow down the problem, but I'm no expert and all I can suggest is to try posting the question to http://answers.microsoft.com/en-us/windows/forum/windows_7?tab=Threads.

  • HP OfficeJet Pro 8600 Plus - "Scan to Computer" issue on Mac OSX 10.8 or 10.9

    Hi...
I have started experiencing the notorious "scan to computer not working" issue on my 1-month OfficeJet Pro 8600 Plus, after having used the feature a number of times flawlessly.
There are a lot of potential solutions mentioned in dozens of relevant posts for both Mac and Windows, e.g.:
"Failed to open a session on the device"...
Scan to computer does not work...
Problem scanning to computer with an 8600 wireless
Unable to enable print to computer...
Enable Scan to Computer - Communication Error
Officejet Pro 8600 Utility does not show my Mac computer in scan settings
A 'Connection Error' or 'No Computer Detected' Error Message Displays during Scanning
HP Wireless All-in-One Printers - Communication Error between the Scanner and Your Computer...
    Etc.
However, in my case, no solution works, after several frustrating hours of trying to fix the issue, in Mac OS X Mountain Lion (10.8), or after upgrading to Maverics (10.9).
The behavior of the device points to a software issue, since:
The printer is visible on the network
The print function has been working fine
    The HP Scan function works
The generic Scan function from System Preferences works (although in earlier times it did not, or it stopped working soon after invoking it)
The "Scan to Computer" option does not appear in the HP Utility screen (although occasionally, after random sequences of unistalling and installing the software, it reappears)
The HP Installer crashes before completing the installation (this is a latest symptom, apparently happening before unvoking the HP Setup Assistant, which still works fine)
As already mentioned, I have tried all possible solutions, including software and firmware updates, Apple drivers, HP drivers (full featured software), clean (un)installations, followed by computer and printer restarts. Nothing seems to work.
The "Scan to Computer" feature of the 8600 always works on my Windows 7 laptop, after initial configuration.
The next step will be returning the device for a refund, but before resorting to that, I am giving it a last chance, in (the unlikely) case there is something new I have not tried yet.
    Thanks,
    PNS

  • Officejet Pro 8600 Plus: Scan to computer doesn't work with Win8.1 [solved: problem with USB3 Boost]

Since I installed 8.1 (pro), I can't use my 8600 Pro software for scanning to the computer (via USB). It looks like there is no communication with the printer as for the scanning software, but printing works as usual.
Tried to use the HP Printer Assistant: when I click the "Scan a Document or Photo" button, I get a "Scanner Unreachable" message. Also after a restart of the printer.
When I try to scan from Photoshop, the system first finds the printer but then fails to connect to it.
HP Update says that my system is up to date.
HP Print And Scan Doctor 4.2 finds and shows the printer on the Welcome panel and seems to be able to communicate with it, to a point.
It gives me a "Driver error" (sorry if is not called so in English--it takes over my keyboard language, which is French and says "Erreur du pilote") and states that no communication could be established between the scan driver and the printer, and that I should reboot the computer...
So I did and reran the Doctor software, which gave me the very same error message. This time, I clicked "Ignore" and let it do its things. It ran a "Scan Test" twice and indicated that everything was fine or had been repaired. But strangely nothing happened on the printer during those "tests". And at the end, as it offered me to make a scan test myself, I clicked OK and I had the "Scanner Unreachable" error message again.
So I made my scans on an USB key, as I had to do a few times already, and that went very well. But I'd be glad to have that "Scan to computer" function back. How?
    This question was solved.

    Hi ajmch,
I am sorry to hear that you are still having a scan issue. What antivirus program are you running on the computer? Can you try to scan through Paint and Windows Fax and Scan on the computer? When you run the HP Print and Scan Doctor what error message are you getting?
In this document for Windows: HP Scan Software Does Not Open or Scan on a Printer Using a USB Connection are steps  for checking the WIA and for checking software.
You can also Use the System File Checker tool to repair missing or corrupted system files that may resolve this issue.

  • HP Officejet Pro 8600 cannot scan to computer

i have had this printer for over a year with the same computer. i have windows 8. there have been no recent upgrades that have been done on the computer but it says the scan to computer is disabled. i use this feature almost daily for my job, it worked perfectly 2 days ago. it is connected wirelessly and the wifi connection is good. i have restarted the wifi, the printer, the computer, reset the wifi on printer, updated the IP address from the printer to the computer, downloaded the HP scan doctor, and nothing has fixed my problem. my windows connection manager is running, my system event notification system is running (i read other forums that said theirs were disabled and running them solved the issue)

    Hi @TJA13,
Welcome to the HP Support Forums. I gather that you are no longer able to scan from the printer to your computer using your Officejet 8600 printer.
I have included the A 'Connection Error' or 'No Computer Detected' Error Message Displays When Scanning for HP Officejet... document.  Please click on the section for Windows 8 and follow the steps.
Please let me know the outcome.

  • Officejet Pro 8600 Plus - Scan software doesn't have 8.5x11 letter size option

Just bought a new Officejet Pro 8600 Plus.
The included HP Scan software will only let me choose A4 or A5 paper sizes (as well as 6x4, 7x5, 8x6, 10x8).  No 8.5x11 option, which is what I want to use most often.  (this is from the dropdown options after clicking the "Scan..." button)
Is there something I'm missing?  I'm generally pretty good at figuring this stuff out, but I haven't even seen this issue mentioned on forums, so I'm confused.
Also, when using the Scan To Computer function directly from the printer, I get the same result - it will scan my 8.5x11 document and output an A4 size file.
I'm running Mac OS X 10.6.8.  I have installed all software and firmware updates I could find.  I have my printer's region set to Canada, and bought the machine from a Staples in Canada.  Wondering why I can't use any North American size formats?

@Simple1234 - I have reinstalled the software from HP's website, and no change. (it's actually the same version that came on the installation CD - 12.23).
@Sethaniel - I have definitely tried every combination of settings in those drop down lists, so that's not it.
Ruling out OS issues, my girlfriend is running 10.8, and the HP software is doing the same thing on her computer.
Using the System Preferences scanning method, I can choose paper sizes if set to scan from document feeder.  If I change to flatbed, I have the option to manually type in the dimensions I want, but then I'm forced to manually drag the crop area to which 8.5x11 portion of the flatbed it will scan.  Again, there's no way to just have the flatbed scan a letter size document automatically when placing the page at the top corner of the flatbed, where it shows you to place the page for letter size.
This seems like the most basic function of a scanner!  I'm really perplexed by this.  I would imagine most people in north america would just want to place an 8.5x11 sheet of paper on the flatbed and have an easy way to scan the correct size with no added fuss.
Printing works fine, and I can choose letter size, and many adjustable settings, so I think this is just a problem with HP's scanning software.  I have tried all the usual basic steps, like restarting my computer & the printer, reinstalling software, running software update, looking through all the settings in the HP Scan software, any global settings I could change in System Preferences, tried using a different computer and OS X version, googling the issue, and posting on this forum.
    Any other ideas?

Scans made on HP Officejet Pro 8600 Plus show up okay on PCs buas blank pages on Macs. Any ideas? I can copy them into Publisher and then save it from Publisher as a pdf and Macs get it okay. Prefer not to have to do this

    Hi @JimmyParker
I would like to help you scan to your Mac. I understand that currently your scans are showing up as black pages, but only when you scan to the Mac.
I suggest uninstalling and reinstalling the software. Please use the instructions below to complete a more comprehensive uninstall than the basic uninstall.
    Scrub/ Uninstall
Open the Applications folder > HP or Hewlett Packard folder > HP Uninstaller
Click continue, click on one of the printers in the list.
    * Only do this step if you do not have any other HP Printers.  Hold down Control, Option and Command, While holding the three buttons down,
    Click uninstall.
    Reset Printing System
Click the Apple icon (   ), and then click System Preferences.
In the Hardware section, click Print & Fax/Scan. The Print & Fax/Scan  dialog box opens.
Right-click (or  Ctrl  +click) in the left panel, and then click Reset printing system…
Click OK to confirm the reset.
Type the correct Name and Password.
Click OK to reset the printing system. The Print & Fax dialog box shows no printer selected
Note: This will remove all printers in the print and Fax/Scan, any printer removed can be re-added later by clicking the plus (+) symbol.
    Repair Disk Permissions
On the Dock, click Applications, and then click Utilities.
    Double-click Disk Utility.
Highlight your hard drive/partition on the left (by default this is "Macintosh HD").
Click the Repair Disk Permissions button at the bottom of the window.
Once the repair is complete, restart the computer.

  • Officejet Pro 8600 not able to be set as default printer

I've just installed the Officejet Pro 8600 on my wireless network.  It was added correctly using WPS andindicated no problems found on the wireless network test results that the printer did. All items were listed as 'PASS'. It is showing up in the device and printers on my Windows7  64-bit machine. When I right-click on the printer icon, it does not allow me any option to set it as my default printer and it also doesn't show up as an available printer from any application to print (like from MS Office). The device driver was auto-located by Windows, so there is also no option for me to update it. Anyone have a solution for what I need to do to get the printer available to actually print too?? Thanks.

    Hi,
I had a smiliar problem for the same printer that I bought just yesterday.
Despite numerous troubleshooting tasks, I was still unable to make the printer my default one.
    I tried
    - switching from wireless to USB connected
    - uninstalling and reinstalling
    - cleaning registry entires as directed here:
    http://h30434.www3.hp.com/t5/Printer-All-in-One-Install-Setup-e-g-Windows-8/Cannot-Set-HP-Officejet-...
    - running troubleshooting wizards and more...
So... after yet another re-installation, I went here:
    https://h30495.www3.hp.com/help/about
and clicked on Printer Support under Additional Help (down at the bottom)
    - choose North America
    - choose HP Support - United States (English) --> Product Support and Troubleshooting -
    - now - here - IMPORTANT - http://www8.hp.com/us/en/support-drivers.html :
DO NOT  Enter a product name/number
    - but choose
Or automatically find your products and solutions - click on START button
you may need to ALLOW your antivirus software to scan your computer and after a minute or so you will get a response like this:
    1 HP products were discovered
»HP Officejet Pro 8600 Plus e-All-in-One Printer - N911g                 Serial Number:                                 Product #  here                                               Product Number:                                 Number here
Now got to Start - Devices and Printers and RIGHT CLICK on the HP printer device and choose Printer Properties:
The GENERIC NAME  "HP Officejet Pro 8600" needs to be replaced with FULL NAME of your printer:
    HP Officejet Pro 8600 Plus e-All-in-One Printer - N911g
    Click "Apply"  - click OK
    Now make your printer DEFAULT
    GOOD LUCK!

  • Scanning a 4 x 6 photo, new HP Officejet Pro 8600 automatically scans the entire glass area.

The 8600 forces me to crop the scanned photo.  My old 8500 automatically recognized only the photo (or multiple photos if more than one) and presented them as cropped final images.  How can I do the same with the 8600?  It is an Officet Pro 8600 Premium.  I have a lot of photos to scan and it will take a long time if I have to crop each one.  Why would HP go backwards in capability on a newer more expensive printer?

    Hi Mar_R,
I saw your post on another forum thread I worked on previously; Re: Multiple photo scan on Officejet Pro 8600. I would like to help answer your inquiry and adjust your settings to auto crop your 4x6 photos.
Mar_R wrote on the other thread:
I just posted a related problem elsewhere in the forums with my new 8600.  I have to wonder though, how can this be a Windows related problem, as only two days ago, when I had my 8500 running and connected, it could scan and recognize multiple photos and save them as separate files.  I am running Windows 7 Professional 64 bit by the way, on an HP all in one computer.  Yesterday, I uninstalled my 8500 driver and the 8500 HP Solution Center Software, and installed the new 8600 software and there is no function to recognize individual photo scans. In the hour or so between uninstalling the old HP printer software and installing the new, there were no updates to Windows.   I submit that this is an oversight or ommission by HP from the software included with the printer.  But I am puzzled as to how they can justify going backwards in capability from an older printer to a newer and more expensive one.
My response to the individual I was working with was "You can not set the scan option to detect separate items on the Windows operating system any more. This is clearly a feature that was removed from the software. I even tried checking 3rd party software programs with the hopes of bypassing the limitation the HP newer software has created.
The only glimmer of hope I could find is that  I believe the newer printer software, v33, has re-added the feature. I suspect the customers were heard. I mean I imagine you are not the only one that has come across this and expressed the desire to be able to detect separate items when scanning."
I made no reference to this being a Windows issue. This feature is available when scanning to a Mac, but the version of software is different. In fact, scanning to a Mac and scanning to a Windows operating system are entirely different and incomparable.
I hope this answers your inquiry. As for finding a solution to the issue you are experiencing, it sounds like the issue is not actually detecting separate items, rather you are trying to scan 4x6 and have it auto crop so you do not need to manually crop each scan.  If this is correct, please use the instructions below.
Open HP Scan, create a new shortcut, change the Scan Size to 4x6.
Now you will not have to crop the image each time you scan, all you have to do is choose the appropriate scan shortcut. I hope this helps.

  • Can you print from the ADF with Officejet Pro 8600 (not plus) & how to print checks in correct order

Client has Officejet Pro 8600 I(not plus) They want to print payroll checks out of QuickBooks but when they put the checks in tray 1, it pulls the check that is on the top, which happens to be the last check # in the stack.  Is there a way to print where the printer pulls from the bottom of the check stack as opposed to the top. I've looked and can't seem to find the answer. QuickBooks says we should check with HP and change something in the print drivers?
So I thought it would fix it if they printed the checks from the ADF where I thought I could control if it pulls from the front or back of the stack. When we tried to print from the ADF, it pulled from Tray 1 and we weren't given the option to print from the ADF.   (only Tray 1 & 2...which they don't have the 2nd tray anyway) So does this model, not being the PLUS model, not allow you to print from the ADF. (only scan, copy and fax from the adf?)
If we can't use the ADF for check printing, then how can we get the checks to print in the correct order.  Meaning, the 1st check # to print should be on the check that is on the bottom of that check stack in Tray 1.  Otherwise they have to count out the exact number of checks & place them in the tray.  Or reverse all of them which is not an efficient either! I hope this makes sense.

    Hi @kceacct ,
I see that you would like to know how to print out the checks in order. I will do my best to help you.
The ADF can be used for copying, scanning and faxing.
From the print driver you can only select the tray that you want to print from.
Changing Print Settings in Windows 8.
You would have to load the checks in order from top to bottom in the paper tray, since the printer just pulls the paper in from the top of the stack of paper.
    Have a nice day!
    Thank You.

  • HP Officejet Pro 8600 N911g Scan to gmail with 2-step verification

I have an HP Office Jet Pro 8600 N911g printer which is a replacement for another one. I am using gmail. I am seting up the Scan to E-mail. I put in all the required information asked by the wizard and when I test it, it comes back with "Incorrect credentials".  My gmail has a two step verification process where it will send a code to my mobil device. I remember setting the Outgoing E-mail profiles up on the previous printer before the replacement but I cannot remember how I got the "scan to E-mail" to work using the 2-step gmail verification.
Looking at another post about gmail I even click on the "Network" tab and changed the IPv4 DNS server settings to 8.8.8.8 and 8.8.4.4.
I checked and tested my gmail/Google to make sure that my gmail 2-step verification is working correctly.

Scan to email allow you to take a document that you have and send it wherever you want to send it as long as you have someone's email or you can send the document to your email.
Here is the solution to the 2-step verification with google's email.
Get into your google email. Click on your picture or name in the right-hand corner and click "Account". On the "Signing In" box click on "2-step verification". From there go to the App-Specific passwords tab.  Click "manage application specific passwords".  At the bottom chose mail, select device and then generate.  Follow the prompts and guidelines from that point.

  • How do I set up my hp officejet pro 8600 to scan to my computer mac OS 10.10.2?

I just want to scan documents to my computer, but every time I try I get an error message that says, "Scan failed The selected folder is not writable"

The right way to do this is to disconnect the printer from the one PC (just unplug the USB cable).
Then connect the printer to your router one of two ways:
    1. (Recommended) - plug the printer into the router using an Ethernet cable.
    2. Wirelessly - on the front of the printer: Setup > Network > Wireless Setup Wizard.  Follow the instructions.
Once the printer is connected to the network, add it to the PCs in this manner:
    1. Make sure the printer is turned on and connected to your network. Verify that you can access the printer's internal web page by browsing to its IP address before continuing. Get its IP from a Network Test printed from the front panel of the printer.
    2. Click >> Start >> Control panel >> Devices & Printers.
    3. Click the Add a printer
    4. Select Local printer
    5. Select Create a new port and select Standard TCP/IP Port and click Next button.
    6. Under Device type, select TCP/IP Device. Under Hostname or IP address, enter the printer's IP address. Click Next.
    7. Select Hewlett-Packard from the list of manufacturers and select and select your printer model. Click Next.
If your printer model was not listed, then select Have Disk, browse the HP CD that came with your printer and select the first file that starts with hp and ends with inf. Click Open then OK. Select your printer model. Click Next.
    8. If you are asked, use the currently installed driver.
    9. It will ask for the Printer name -- enter a new name or use the existing one. This will be the name of the printer that you select from other applications.
    10. You may be asked to share the printer. Choose NO.
    11. The Print Test Page box appears. Go ahead and print it.
    12. Click Finish.
