HP OfficeJet Pro L7680 - New ink cartridges saying "Empty"

I have a HP OfficeJet Pro L7680 that has two ink cartridges that suggest they are empty, although they are brand new from HP. These are replacement carts, not the original.
I am not sure how to diagnose the problem since the cartridges are leaking color when removed. Only two the four are reporting problems. The black and cyan ones are the culprits and the black one reports appropriately most of the time. The cyan one is consistantly reporting empty.
Any suggestions on ways to clean/fix the issue? Also, are there any diagnositic pages in the menu where I can see the error code that the error is reporting?

I did some searching through the service menus. There are two event codes and two error codes. Both error codes were all zeros. The event codes were 69556 and 69548. I sadly don't have a way to look those up so I think that's a dead end.
The summary of the problem is that the cyan cartridge keeps complaining to be out of ink even though it is brand new from the store.
I will attempt another cartridge soon (ouch these are expensive).
Any other thoughts?

  • HP Officejet Pro L7580 - Yellow Ink Cartridge keeps popping out although it's brand new.

    Hello,
I have had this officejet printer for about 4 years. I have never had a serious problem until now. A few days ago I replaced the yellow ink cartridge (88XL) because the ink indicator showed it as being completely empty. After replacing the cartridge with a brand new cartridge from OfficeMax, the cartridge pops out while I'm trying to print or copy something and the displays says that the yellow cartridge's ink level is not enough and needs to be replaced.
It seems at first glance that this is a mechanical problem concerning the yellow ink slot; however, I'm not sure. Or I suppose the problem could be related to the cartridge itself. To get around this problem, I've held down the cartridge and stuck a small pencil in the opening where the small latch of the "ink cartridge compartment cover" normally goes in. That way I've been able to print, but it's really a hassle. And honestly I don't think this is the real solution to the problem.
If anyone knows how to resolve this issue, I'd like to hear from you. Please let me know as soon as possible. Worst comes to worst I will have to go out and buy another printer.

Try this for a Quick Fix ...........
After reading other forum comments from people having the same problem with the yellow cartridge popping-out, combined with others who have realised that HP have no interest in compensating anyone for this rediculous example of, at best, 'bad design', or at worst 'blatent planned obsolescence', I have created a 'quick fix' that may add another 1, 2 or more years of life to the HP Officejet Pro L7580 Printer.
This is not the elegant technical solution I was hoping for.  However, in hindsight, it may prove to be a more reliable solution than replacing the faulty part that is actually causing the problem.  So, here it is the Quick Fix ........
I found a wooden triangular door stop that I cut to size that fitted exactly in the space between the plastic door and the offending yellow cartridge. To hold it in place, I wrapped the doorstop with 2" cellotape, then I stuck the door stop to the inside of the plastic door with double sided cellotape (double sided stick-on foam would also work well). With the doorstop in the correct place, the plastic door closed perfectly and was snug enough to apply sufficent pressure to the offending yellow cartridge, and hence stopping it from popping out again.  To make sure the plastic door does not 'fly open' with the pressure of the yellow cartridge (when it wants to pop out!), I applied another piece of 2" cellotape around the outside of the door, holding it to the body of the photocopier.
This exercise only took 10-15 mins to do.  I feel this is a much better option than spending another $300+ on a new All-in-One  system, as well as being a good environmental solution.  If this is DELIBERATE 'planned obsolescence', companies like HP need to be more accountable for, at best, 'sloppy design'.  Any feedback would be appreciated.

  • HP Officejet Pro 8610 setup ink cartridges not recognized

I just purchased an HP Officejet Pro 8610, and was following the setup on the printer, installed the ink cartridges as shown in the "movie" guide, and the printer seems to not recognize that I have installed the 4 ink cartridges. They are the 4 cartridges that came with the printer.

    @jaycka
    Welcome to the forums!
I have some of my own ideas that might help the printer recognize the ink cartridges.
    Try this:
    Removing the ink cartridges.
    Unplug the printer.
Dampen a lint free cloth or cotton swab with bottled water.
Gently cleaning off the electrical contacts from the cartridges.
Wait for the contacts to dry.
Plug the printer back in and wait for the printer setup on the display to ask you to insert the cartidges and hopefully they'll be recognized.
If not, call HP directly to inquire about a replacement.

  • Officejet 6600 New Ink Cartridge Shows Empty

I bought brand new color ink cartridges from Bestbuy for my Officeject 6600.  I printed one color page.  After a week when i tried to print in color, it is telling me the color cartridges are empty or near empty! Can you believe it -- only after one page printed. This looks like a scam by HP to me. Please tell me that it is not.  That HP does not sell color ink cartridges that you are obligated to use EVERY DAY or else it fails after one print.  It makes me never want to buy an HP product again. Hope there is an explanation.  Please help!

Hey ,  Welcome to the HP Support Forum.  I understand you're concerned about the page yield in the colour cartridges of your HP Officejet 6600 e-All-in-One Printer. I would like to assist you with this.   For your information, depending on whether you were using regular or XL sized colour cartridges, you can yield approximately 330 to 825 pages per colour cartridge.  One colour print job, barring manufacturing defects in the cartridge, is not enough to drain a full set.  Click here for more information on the limited warranty on HP ink supplies.  Have you been printing a lot of text only (black ink) print jobs?  If yes, as you will see here and here coloured ink is often used in black only print jobs, unless you've configured your printer settings in Windows or Mac to be otherwise. In the HP Ink Usage in Inkjet Printers article that I've linked above, you can learn how and when ink is used by your printer in print jobs and other features.  Further to that, some ink (including coloured ink) is used to service the print head and to prevent clogging.       If after reviewing the information I've provided, your printer settings on PC or Mac you're still feeling something's amiss, I recommend you reach out to our tech support team.  You can click on the following link to initiate a case: www.hp.com/contacthp/
Once you fill out the online form to create your case you can choose from different direct contact methods.  On my end I cannot exchange or provide compensation for faulty cartriges, but this is something you can bring to the technical support team's attention.  I hope this helps.  Regards,

  • HP Officejet Pro 8500A 910A "Ink cartridges appear to be missing or damaged"

I have a yellow ink cartridge that is still 75% full but now my printer is giving me the error message, "Ink cartridges appear to be missing or damaged".  I have tried all of the troubleshooting tips recomended by HP and all have failed other than replacing the cartridge, and that worked.  I am trying claim a warranty on this cartridge as it is still well within the warranty date.  HOWEVER, everytime I input the information, the page switches to the sales page!!! I am ready to throw this $350 POS HP 8500a out the door and burn it then post the video on youtube of how crappy the service and product is!  PLEASE GIVE THE DIRECT LINK TO OBTAIN THE WARRANTY ON THIS INK CARTIDGE!!!! Or is this your plan to make people so frustrated that they give up and you don't have to reemburse the customer?  Way to go customer service!!!
        Regards, Joanns

I'd advise calling HP phone support. You'll need to tell them the warranty ends date written on the cartridge...(no need to enter it on the website, as that's just for printer warranty)

  • HP Photosmart C6180 printer. Says the magenta ink cartridge is empty when it is new.

I own a HP Photosmart C6180 printer.  It sat for several months so I replaced all of the ink cartridges.  It will not print because it says the magenta ink cartridge is empty.  It is brand new and i can see the ink inside of it.  I am not sure what to do.  I don't want to take it to get serviced as I live several hours from any computer or printer repair shop.  Please help!

    Hi pbeck39
What are the ink levels like on a self test page - are they good? Are you using Win XP x64 by any chance?

  • HP Officejet Pro 8500 Cyan ink will not print. installed a new one, but no success

HP Officejet Pro 8500   Cyan ink will not print. installed a new one, but no success

I had to replace both printheads about $85 a piece.  It may be more cost effective to buy a new printer.  Once I replaced the one printhead, the other one went out.  It is common and it did solve the issue.  I really like my printer and if it gets me another year or so, I think it was worth it.

  • OfficeJet Pro L7680 not printing the colour red: it comes out as brown

Running Windows XP. OfficeJet Pro L7680. Using HP inks + quality paper.
    Model number CB038a
The colour red is printed as a distinct brown. All other colours/shades/tints/alignments etc are absolutely fine.
Have done the obvious: changed cartridges for brand new ones.
    Cleaned printheads
Dignostic page: suggests all ok (good printhead health)
The actual quality of print is good in all respects on the test patterns other than the colour red is printed as brown.
    Help gratefully received.

  • HP OfficeJet Pro 8600 Plus-- ink cold / freeze?

I have an HP Officejet Pro 8600 Plus.  Bought new ink cartridges last night and left them in car (28 degrees F.).
will the quality of printing be affected?
Will there be any damage to the printer?
Will the life of the ink cartridges be decreased?

    Hello 749,
I understand you are interested in the proper care for the HP ink cartridges you purchased for your OfficeJet 8600 Plus. To answer your question it is recommended to Keep ink cartridges sealed in the original package until they are installed. Store at temperatures between -15 and 35 degrees Celsius (5 and 95 degrees Fahrenheit). So no, you should not have any problems with the quality or be worried that it will damage the printer.
I would like you to take a look at Storing and Handling Ink Cartridges and Storing Opened Cartridges and Printheads these great documents have some very informative information that I am sure you will find helpful.
If you have anymore questions, please let me know.

  • New ink cartridge is not being recognized

I just installed a new ink cartridge in my np officejet pro L7580.  All the ink works great except the black.

Ok, I just figured out so I´ll post it here in case someone has the same issue. I turned off my iPod while connected to the computer. Afterwards, the "other" connection showed up again in the device manager but this time it stayed there without disappearing and with the exclamation point on. I then proceed with one of the instructions in this posting to install the driver for the apple mobile which then showed up in the USB section of the hardware (it was never there until now). Bingo! I got my iPod Touch to connect for the first time! But seriously, why should it be so hard???? I'm concerned with the number of postings here. It looks as if Apple is selling the hottest toys but not be the best ones in terms of quality...

  • How can I get my HP DeskJet 6540 to recognize the new ink cartridges I installed?

Hi everyone. I have an HP DeskJet 6540 printer and I replaced the ink cartridges. After I replaced the cartridges, I aligned them and then did a test print. I noticed that the blank ink didn't print. I opened system preferences, and then I opened the printer utility. It says, "Device Status : Pen Failure." Current Supplies Levels says, "The current levels for the selected printer are shown below...Cartridge on the left (tri-color 97) is unknown and the the cartridge on the right (black 96) is missing." Oh, I forgot to mention that the print cartridge light on the left side is flashing. I went to the HP support website and it says that the problem could be an incorrect print cartridge, incompatible print cartridge, or problem with the (left/right) print cartridge.  The solution they offered was to remove, inspect and reseat the problem cartidge. It also said to clean the problem cartridge contacts. I did that and it still gives me the same results. I even reset the printer but still got the same results...
So the next thing I try is the OTHER cartridges listed as compatible with my printer which is 94 (black) and 95 (tri-color). I bought the new cartridges, placed them in the printer and I still got the same message from the print utility. I took the latter cartridges back and got a refund and explained that none of the compatible cartridges are working with my printer. I kept the 96 and 97 cartridges in the printer and the light on the left continues to flash so now I'm here asking if anyone knows how I can get my printer to recognize the new ink cartridges I installed?  Are there any other solutions that I have besides throwing the printer out of the window? :-)
    Thanks everyone ;-)

With all that you have done it does sound like the printer has a fault. If you haven't tried turning off the printer for several minutes, then this would be worth trying (maybe you have done this when you say reset the printer?).
If the cartridge light on the printer flashes when you turn the printer back on then it sounds like a hardware fault - not the driver or the operating system. And this is not usually something a user can resolve so it would need repair. And for the cost of a new printer, why would you bother.
If you plan of sticking with HP and getting another model that can use the 96 & 97 cartridges (let's face it, they often cost more than the new printer), then take the two existing cartridges to the store and see if they will let you check they are okay. No point throwing them out also if they still have a fair bit of ink still in them.

    Hello untech,
I see that it has been awhile since you have posted with us on the HP Forums.  Please let me take a moment to say "Welcome Back".
I see that you are having an issue with the printer shutting it self off and not powering back on.
By chance do you have the printer power cable connected to a power bar/strip?  If so, please try connecting the printers power cable directly to a wall outlet.  Here is a document that explains the Issues when Connected to an Uninterruptible Power Supply/Power Strip/Surge Protector.
The printer in the document is a LaserJet printer but this document is meant for HP products in general and only uses the LaserJet as an example.
I am also going to include a document for when The HP Printer Won't Turn On or Respond When the Power Button is Pressed.
If by chance the issue is not resolved after doing the steps outlined,  I would then suggest calling HP's Technical Support to see about further options for you. If you are calling within North America, the number is 1-800-474-6836 and for all other regions, click here: click here.
