HP P2050S PORTABLE HARD DRIVE WON'T BACK UP

I just purchased a HP P2050S Portable Hard Drive w. simple save.  I plugged it in as instructed and it lights up and let me agree to the licensing but thats it.  It won't back up anything.  Should uninstall and reinstall to see if it will work.  I am concerned that I can only install once.  I have tried to get ahold of HP and keep getting the run around.  i am sorry I bought this thing now, especially when it said all you had to was plug it in.  It shows up on devices but nothing is back up on it.
Can anyone help me please.
Thank you
Vicki

That is amazing.. a March 08 is near to first release... most died ages ago.
Which hard disk does it have??
Yes, I would say repair is not worthwhile at this point.. just replace it.
Latest ones are better in lots of ways.. faster wireless and disks..
Plan on 3years then replacement no matter what it is like.
They fixed the power supply issue.. at least they don't die so fast.. but replaced first class drives with the cheapest Green WD.. which I have strong doubts on surviving past 3years.. and plenty are corrupting themselves well beforehand.
Do not believe one word about server class drives.. Apple's definition is PR exercise.. not related to this or the previous decade of server specs.

  • WD Portable Hard Drive Won't Mount

This is the second time I have had a portable hard drive that suddenly quits mounting on the mac. First, a Lacie, and now a WD. After working with apple support and trying everything I could never get the problem fixed with the Lacie. Luckly, when I plugged it into a dell PC it came up and I was able to recover all data.
I then purchased the new drive, the WD, and copied the information over. Today, the WD quit working. It will not mount on either of my Macs, IMAC G5 and a powerbook G4. It also unfortunately will not show up on a PC either. It is a combo, firewire/usb drive. It does show up in Disk Utility but will not let you select "mount" only "info" and "eject".
Long story short....anyone have any ideas. I read some posts about data recovery with "data rescue" and other products. If I can't get it to mount, can I still get the data off?
    Help!!

If software won't do it - you'll try it all if it's important enough - there's the costly way; disk recovery specialists.
It's a cruel lesson, but I'm sure you'll have a better back up system / procedure in the future. Ideally save to two disks and keep a third set of (important) back ups off site.

  • Verbatim 320GB FireWire/USB Portable Hard Drive Won't Mount

Hello ... I have a Verbatim 320GB FireWire/USB Portable Hard Drive that won't mount. The drive has only been used a handful of times ... it is self powered. I accidentally disconnected the drive without dragging it to the trash first .... so I got the "improper disk removal" error. Now the drive won't mount at all. Is it dead or in some kind of frozen state? Any ideas how I can get it back up and running??
    Thanks

  • Lenovo 120GB portable hard drive won't disconnect (not sure where to put this!)

I didn't see any specific forums/areas for portable hard drives, so I thought I'd try here-- if it's in the wrong place, please let me know!
I got a 120gb lenovo portable hard drive over the holidays, and just today tried plugging it in; the only thing I did was check how much space it had free on it (111gb, but I did find out why that is!), but now I can't remove it. That is, when I try to use the 'safely remove hardware' thing, I get a message saying that the device is still being used by a program. However... there shouldn't be any program using it! I was told that normally it's not a problem to just straight-up unplug the usb cords from the computer, but I'd rather not have to do that every single time I use the portable hard drive.

    Welcome to the forum,
In order that members can help you trouble shoot this you may want to post some more details. Most importantly which OS you are running.
Did you have something like Windows Media Player running when you tried to disconnect the drive? I've experienced the same with WMP running; it links to the drive looking for files it can play / add to it's playlists and therefore Windows thinks it is still in use.

  • My portable hard drive won't show up in iMovie

    Hi there,
Recently my portable HD has stopped showing up in iMovie so I cannot save any of my movies which I really need to do as my disc is almost full. Does anyone know why this may be? I've read a few things about time machine stopping it from backing up but it is switched off. Any help would be awesome!!

    Hi, Rachael;
Well, in a couple of short weeks, you will have your Mac Pro back, and almost assuredly in perfect working order. Apple's warranty service is usually quite good. Even with great quality control, problems can sometimes crop up when you are the owner of a piece of bleeding edge technology and world class design.
20 years ago, I purchased a similar piece of technology, which was called the Mac SE. It featured a 9 inch black and white screen, one floppy disk drive, a 20 MB (that's MB, not GB) hard drive, and a single processor running at 8 MHZ. The asking price was $2900.00. Bleeding edge for the times. When the hard drive went south, it's a lucky thing I had Apple Care, because the replacement drive sold for $800.00. But the coolest thing about this machine was that the designers actually signed the inside of the case. That's what hooked me on Apple hardware.
I've always enjoyed owning products built by people who take pride in their work, and the Mac Pro is such a product. Choosing it over a PC certainly shows that you are not too young to make the right decision; you obviously take pride in your work, as well.

Well, for FCP to see this file structure and recognize it, you need to download the Canon XF Log and Transfer plugin...
    http://software.canon-europe.com/software/0040354.asp?model=
    >I don't have the original clips on the card.
Meaning that they didn't back up the full card structure?  Lordy...very few shooters do this and it is maddening.  If you don't have the full card structure, even with the plugin, FCP cannot log and transfer.
As for ClipWrap2...that should work.  Do you have the right files?

  • New computer, itunes backed up on portable hard drive,  how to transfer?

I have just received a new laptop. I connected my portable hard drive on which i had backed up my itunes library from my old pc. On the new computer i used the "add folder to library" function in itunes. All the songs from my hard drive appear in the iTunes library on my new laptop, but when i try to play the songs, iTunes asks me to locate each individual song file on my portable hard drive. i have tried using the consolidate library function but this hasn't done anything. I don't want to have to "locate file" for each of the thousands of tracks i have stored on my portable hard drive.

  • Can I back-up files to a portable hard drive and not use Time Machine?

I have a portable hard drive that I use for all of my Time Machine back-ups. I back-up the entire system every two or three weeks. I use the Time Machine software and it works quite well. I'm interested in backing up specific files (photos, documents, etc.) to a second portable drive every six months but I don't want to use the Time Machine software. Is there a simple way to hook up the portable drive (brand new Lacie 500 gb drive), open up the file on my desktop and drag the files to the new drive? Are there special steps I need to perform to avoid formatting the drive for Time Machine? Any tips will be greatly appreciated.

You can do that, but you'll have to erase the drive, or delete the previous versions, each time. You might want to look at CarbonCopyCloner or SuperDuper. They're most often used to make full bootable "clones" of your internal HD, but can be set to back up specific files and folders as well. CCC is donationware, so you can try it for a while before sending them some $$ so they can keep it up to date. SD has a free version, but I think you'll need the paid one (about $30, I think) to do this.

It would be best to format it for Macs, which is the same as Time Machine. What is the problem with that?

  • The first time I connected my new My Passport portable hard drive to my Mac, the message asking if I want to use the drive to back up with Time Machine did not appear.  What is the next step?

The first time I connected my new My Passport portable hard drive to my MacBook Pro, the message asking if I want to use the drive to back up with Time Machine did not appear.  I would like to set it up to do this.  What would my next step be?

    Drive Partition and Format
    1. Open Disk Utility in your Utilities folder.
    2. After DU loads select your hard drive (this is the entry with the mfgr.'s ID and size) from the left side list. Click on the Partition tab in the DU main window.
    3. Under the Volume Scheme heading set the number of partitions from the drop down menu to one. Click on the Options button, set the partition scheme to GUID then click on the OK button. Set the format type to Mac OS Extended (Journaled.) Click on the Apply button and wait until the process has completed.
    4. Select the volume you just created (this is the sub-entry under the drive entry) from the left side list. Click on the Erase tab in the DU main window.
    5. Set the format type to Mac OS Extended (Journaled.) Click on the Security button, check the button for Zero Data and click on OK to return to the Erase window.
    6. Click on the Erase button. The format process can take up to several hours depending upon the drive size.
Open Time Machine preferences to select this drive for use as the backup drive. Turn on Time Machine.

Does your printer have a slot for an SD card?  Is there are card in the slot?  If so, the computer is trying to mount that card as an external device.  It might be corrupted so that it can't be read.

  • PORTABLE USB HARD DRIVES HDTC710XK3A1 SUPPORT - BACKED UP DELL PC AUDIO/DRIVERS & OVERWROTE EXT HDD.

Hello, I recently purchased an: Toshiba Canvio Connect 1TB External USB 3020 Portable Hard Drive Black SKU: 8914951 from BestBuy for$59.99 +Tax.
I used this drive to backup all of my important files from my Old PC since I purchased a new Dell System. Recently, with my new Dell system, I attempted to make a DRIVERS backups to my External HDD, thinking that it would create the necessary folders on the external drive, which it did not. Instead, it turned my 1TB drive into a 31.9 GB sized APPSDRIVERS (W) drive.
I have since lost all mappings to my 1TB drive and files included on the drive. Is there any reliable help or support for this? I would like to have my HDD back to the way it was, please.
    <br>
I tried calling the Toshiba number, but they are all in the Philippines and told me to go to: KBB.TOSHIBA.COM to reformat my hard-drive. They told me that if I didn't like that answer to hang up and call back and speak with another agent, who would tell me the same thing and give me the same links. Thank you in advance for assistance. --Davio

    Portable USB Hard Drives HDTC710XK3A1
I reformatted using Disk Management. Toshibas website says there is no softrware to install??
The Toshiba External hard drives are plug-and-play devices.
That simply means (like for any USB external hard drive) recent versions of Windows include the drivers for it. They were first introduced to Windows 95 by OSR 2.1 in about 1996.
But you are apparently interested in the backup (NTI Backup Now EZ) software that's included. You can get that here.
Toshiba Portable USB Hard Drive Software Installer for Windows
But that's about the worst free backup software I've ever seen. I certainly wouldn't bother with it

  • Do I need to back up itunes library to a portable hard drive?

I'm in my late 50's and I'm totally new to ipod & itunes. I have just purchased the ipod classic 160g mainly because I want to store all my CD collection & download all the new stuff too. Have loads of tunes in my library & have been given mixed messages about backing up. If iTunes is stored online is the sole purpose of backing up just incase laptop goes down? Also, can I access my iTunes account from another computer?

I would definitely back up your iTunes on a seperate hard drive, iTunes is only stored on line if you've either bought the music from iTunes or if you subscribe to iTunes Match. Even if you have iTunes match, it isn't designed to be a back up, besides, why trust a third party with your valuable music?
You can have your iTunes account on 5 seperate computers. I wouldn't try to download music to a different computer using your iPod though, it might work if you sign in to your account on the other computer first but it'd be better to transfer from a portable hard drive.

  • Trouble Transferring to a Portable Hard Drive and Backing up.

    Hi there.
Recently I have come across a small snag when trying to back up my work folder to a portable hard drive. When I drag it across to the drive (Formatted FAT32 if that helps) it begins to transfer and creates the folder before giving me this message 'The Finder can’t complete the operation because some data in “Creative Work” can’t be read or written.
    (Error code -36)'
So I decided to try and repair the permissions on Macintosh HD with Disk Utility. Which gave me this message repeatedly after several tries.
    Permissions differ on "usr/share/derby", should be drwxr-xr-x , they are lrwxr-xr-x .
    Repaired "usr/share/derby".
Warning: SUID file "System/Library/CoreServices/RemoteManagement/ARDAgent.app/Contents/MacOS/ARDAg ent" has been modified and will not be repaired.
I also tried to repair my permissions with Onyx which game me the same message as Disk Utility. The strange thing about this problem is I cant seem to find anything wrong with any of the files it simply wont let me back them up...
I was able to burn two back ups of the folder with Toast Titanium. Although there seems to be some discrepancies with the file size on the burnt DVD and that on Macintosh HD. Being that the burnt folder is about 0.3 of a gig smaller. I have looked through all the folders and files and cant find anything missing. Though there is a lot in there and I may run into something down the line.
I would really like to be able to get past this problem without having to re-install OS X because I am still not sure whether I have a complete back up of my files on disk.
If anyone could offer me some suggestions I would be greatly appreciative.
    Thank You.
(I hope my description wasn't too confusing)

    Hi Piccolo32,
There's probably 1 or more files in the folder that are causing the issue. Depending on how many files your dealing with, you could consider dragging and dropping the files 1 by 1, to precisely track down the culprit(s).
*(error -36)* Please see the following posting and let us know if it's the exact same issue your having: http://discussions.apple.com/thread.jspa?threadID=1771300&tstart=3285
*(SUID Error)* Please see this much longer discussion posting, which offers various solutions: http://discussions.apple.com/thread.jspa?threadID=1204263
After reading threw the above posting, it appears, according to apple, the message your seeing can 'safely be ignored'. This is concerning the SUID file.
You appear to be having 2 issues. I was unable to find a solution for the error -36 issue. My suggestion about trying to narrow down which file(s) might be causing the issue is still worth trying, as long as you don't have 100s or 1000s of files to sift threw.
    MacLovin
*Remember FAT32 has a file size limitation of 4GB (-1 byte). The previous posting is good advice, regarding formatting the drive to a native apple format.

I want to restore my MacBook Pro running Snow Lepoard, I made a time machine backup on a portable hard drive, can I get all the files back when resseting the OSX from the Hard Drive?

If you're using the Mac App Store version, there is initially no clean install option unless you're running the installer on a different drive or partition; your existing data will remain as is. If you're doing it from Lion's recovery partition or using the USB flash drive after erasing the internal drive, yes.
