HP P7-1240 Computer hangs while starting

My computer hangs when starting. I get a black screen with nothing happening. If I press control-alt-del the task manager window that opens shows a few things n processes but no activity. After awhile the system seems to free itself and processes start to be added and the computer starts. I'd like to skip the hanging.  Any ideas?

  • KDE / gnome hang while starting

    Hi,
well, KDE and Gnome hang while starting them, when I change back to console, I can read the following:
xset: bad font path element (#63), possible causes are:
Directory does not exist or has wrong permissions
        Directory missing fonts.dir
Incorrect font server address or syntax
I reinstalled xorg, kde, gnome, but again it simply hangs, xorg starts up normally, but when changing to kde or gnome it hangs
    xfce4, wmi, dr17 run well.
I didn change any config filel...
So any idea what could be wrong ?
    thanks
    Kin
PS.: Is there a possiblility to let pacman reinstall ALL packages that are already installed ?

rebuild of kdebase didn't change anything. Running kbuildsycoca with new user from xfce first gives:

After taking forever, I pressed ctrl-C, after a couple of minutes, this was spat out in xterm

After that I tried to run kbuildsycoca again, and this is the result of that:

  • Hanging while starting up PA SE 3.2

I have been using Photoshop Album SE happily for a long time and all of the sudden there was a problem loading photos from a cardreader. PA stopped dead in the middle of the loading process and since then I cannot get it started up again. It hangs while it is displaying the opening screen. Tried to fix it by installing 3.2 but that didn't help either.
Please help ! There are more than 12.000 photos in the catalog so rebuilding it and attaching all the tags is no option !!!
Does anybody have a clue ? Is there a way to repair the catalog ?
    Hans Douma

I have found a fix after doing additional research through this forum. Tech Note #328730 addresses this problem and it works for Photoshop Album 3.2 even though it was written for release 1.0.
Here is a link that will take you directly to the Tech Note:
    http://kb.adobe.com/selfservice/viewContent.do?externalId=328730
When using this fix the Tech Note indicates:
"Imported image data and tags are lost when you re-create the My Catalog.psa file, so you need to reimport images and reapply any tags"
however it did retain the captions (at least it did for me).

  • Computer "hangs" at start up and shut down

when i start up my computer, it takes more time than it should (i think) to start up, and then after login my desktop will appear, but several seconds pass before I can begin using anything.
At shut down, once the screen boes blue, it hangs for close to 30-45 seconds (at least) before finally shutting off. im not sure how to address this. last time i was in a store (for a different problem) the genius mentioned he thought it was odd that it did that (but didnt really have any advice or thoughts on why)
I am running Panther now, but this was also a problem with Jaguar as well.
    thoughts?
    thanks

    Hi Jennifer,
    Several ideas:
    1) Reduce or eliminate your startup items. Some of them can increase your startup time by a few seconds.
    2) Do you have Classic starting up on boot? If you do, turn it off. I think you can change that Classic preferences.
    3) Are you connected to any remote systems? If so, close those connections.

  • Why does the server hang while starting up or the "csdb recover" hang when it is run?

Sometimes after iPlanet Calendar Server crashes, the server hangs during
    startup or the csdb
utility hangs when I execute the recover
    command.
    <P>
One possible solution is to delete all of the .share
files in the same directory as the
Calendar Server database. In most cases, the server will successfully start up
    again.

When you start up in Safe Mode various things aren't loaded at startup, Bob.
Have a thinbk about which of the following may be involved in your own case:
It forces a directory check of the startup volume.
It loads only required kernel extensions (some of the items in /System/Library/Extensions).
It runs only Apple-installed startup items (some of the items in /Library/StartupItems and /System/Library/StartupItems - and different than login items).
Mac OS X 10.4 Tiger only: It disables all fonts other than those in /System/Library/Fonts .
Mac OS X 10.4 Tiger only: It moves to the Trash all font caches normally stored in /Library/Caches/com.apple.ATS/(uid)/ , where (uid) is a user ID number such as 501.
Mac OS X 10.4 Tiger only: It disables any Login Items.
    (from http://docs.info.apple.com/article.html?artnum=107392)
Have a look at http://docs.info.apple.com/article.html?artnum=106464 for some more possibilities.
You may find it worth while using System Prefernces/Accounts to creat a new admin user account and see if the problem persists with it. THis may help you narrow down the problem further.
    Cheers

  • Root.sh script hangs while starting ohasd on OEL

    Hi
I have installed 11g Oracle grid infrastructure on OEL R5 U6
I am having an issue when it comes to running the root.sh script
The script runs fine until it gets to the part where it tries to start ohasd
    Adding daemon to inittab
CRS-4123: Oracle High Availability Services has been started
ohasd is startingOnce it reaches this point it hangs. It's been at this part of the root.sh script now for over an hour. I cannot move the mouse or create new ssh sessions. It has completely hung the machine.
I have ensured that that hosts file has no entries for the host name
And there does not seem to be any errors in the logs
Any Ideas on where I can start looking to fix this issue?
    Thanks

  • JBuilder X Enterprise activity monitor hang while starting SUN ONE 7

    Dears,
I have JBuilder X Enterprise installed on Win XP Pro + SP1, and I installed SUN ONE plugin for development on SUN ONE 7 update 2 platform edition.
I can debug do whatever from about 4 weeks now, but starting from yesterday, I began getting Activity Monitor (Initializing the Java virtual machine) dialog still hanging, although the application server is started -It usually disappears after a period of starting-, so it is always there, the problem is that it appears as modal dialog and prevent me from debugging my code.
About my application, it is an EAR with around 45 EJBs, and 30 JSPs till now, I think it is not that overhead.
I tried and installed both JBuilder twice and SUN ONE application server once again, but no use :(
    Any suggestion?
    Thanks for yr time ...

I made a work around and post it to JBuilder team on the following URL.
using remote debugging even if u r on the same machine it worked fine.

  • Why does my computer hang when starting up?

Moc Pro 8 core '09 OS X 10.7. Computer was shut down and will not leave the apple spinning gray wheel screen to start fully. Cannot back either. Disk utility says everything's fine...but it isn't. Host cpu cannot index drive when used as a target.

I got the Time Mchine to start and it's telling me that it will take 225 days to back up 231 GB of data. ??????
What can I do to back up this drive???

  • Iphoto hangs while starting up...

    leopard
    iphoto 7.1.5
    macbook pro late 2008
    2 gigs of ram
    345 photo's
iphoto is really slow starting up, this is not a new problem but i really would like to use iphoto more...
i start up... it seems ok for about 3 seconds as it starts... then rainbow gear spins for 30-45 seconds before it begins working properly... sometimes longer
    any idea's?
    thanks

Well the usual answer to this one is that iPhoto is checking for Shared Libraries or MobileMe galleries. So: iPhoto preferences and make sure the Sharing Preferences (look for Shared Libraries) is disabled and Mobile Me (Check for New Photos) is set to Manually

  • Z68-GD65 Hangs on Starting Windows because of USB Controller. Any fixes?

Issue: During Windows 7 (32 bit & 64 bit) installation and startup, the computer hangs at "Starting Windows". It will display a pixel or two of the first red part of the logo animation and then stop.
    System Setup/Hardware:
    Mobo - Z68-GD65
    RAM - Corsair Vengeance 8GB (2x4GB)
    HDD - Corsair Force 3 60GB SSD
    CPU - Intel i5-2400 (Sandybridge)
PSU - Antec Earth Watts 650W
GPU - Asus Geforce GTX 560 Ti
Cause: I found that when I disabled the USB Controller completely from the BIOS, everything worked smoothly (install & startup). If I left the USB Controller enabled and just disabled the Legacy Controller, I would be left with a blinking DOS cursor after POST.
This is an issue because both keyboard and mouse are USB. I had to borrow an old PS/2 mouse to even install windows.
    Troubleshooting tried:
    - Tried disabling EVERY (and yes, I mean every, I've rebooted this thing 50+ times [stopped keeping track]) setting that can possible be disabled individually
    - Tried unplugged every component except: board, hdd and dvdrom
    - Tried swapping RAM
    - Tried swapping HDDs (to Sata non SSD)
    - Tried swapping PSUs
    - Tried changing Windows 7 install discs (one 32 bit, one 64 bit)
    - Tried removing all motherboard connections (FP audio, FP usb, etc, everything but 24+8pin power)
    - Tried clearing CMOS and resetting BIOS
    - Tried enabling USB Controller via ClickOnce BIOS and restarting
    - Tried fully updating Windows 7 and all drivers (video, mobo, etc)
    - Tried updating BIOS with Live 5
    - Tried leaving only USB 3.0 Controller enabled and plugging mouse/keyboard into those ports (blue on back)
    - Tried Windows repair
    - Tried Windows boot logging (got to file CLASSPNP.sys)
    - Tried booting to Safe Mode
    - Tried banging head on wall  (this was successful in giving me a headache, but not booting the computer)
I mainly list the troubleshooting above to convey the amount of frustration I've had with this board.
The USB Controller simply seems bad or the driver (or the way the board interacts/loads the Windows driver) is bad. I must have USB on my computer.
If I need to RMA, please let me know, however, I would hope there is a solution out there to fix the USB Controller issue. The RMA deadline is the 20th, I hope I can get an answer one way or the other before this as if there is no answer, I will be forced to RMA and go with another product from a different manufacturer (I really wanted to get over my "Asus only" attitude and try you MSI! I've been impressed up until this point, please don't let me down).
    Please help?
-Frazzled not tech illiterate personal system builder.

    phasedone,
I was having the exact same issue with a new build (Mobo MSI Z68-GD65-G3).  I had been banging my head against the wall for a while and then I came across your post.  Subsequently, I disabled the USB controller in BIOS and my Win 7 install ran fine (minus the fact that I had no access to my USB keyboard and mouse).   I set the BIOS back to default settings which re-enabled the USB controller, and thus was able to re-plug the mouse and keyboard in after the windows loading screen, where the 4 colored orbs come together to make the Windows flag.  This seemed to do the trick.
Now the problem is, everytime the computer restarts (i.e. for any Windows updates), it freezes at the same point it would during the installation.  This is again assuming the mouse and keyboard are still plugged into the rear panel USB ports.  Which of course they're going to be!
Anyone with a recommendation as to how to fix this?  Is this a hardware defect or can it be solved with some sort of driver or firmware update?  I'm at a loss... but I certainly shouldn't have to unplug all USBs before starting the computer, that's just nuts.
I'm considering RMA as well, but would like to see if any MSI staff members or forum members might be able to share their insight.

  • " Starting Oracle Net Listener......."  Hangs  while installing vm manager

Ive taken all defaults read install guide , checked availability of ports and made sure I have libaio.
I've reinstalled on two separate machines and everytime install fails after I accept defaults. Logs don't show anything. ./oracle-xe configure is the only thing in the log.
If I run this again it fails or hangs in the same place. ?????Im not sure where the netlistener is otherwise Id try to manually install?start ?
    "Starting Oracle Net Listener"

I have noticed the same thing on my install where it hangs on starting the listener. BUT. .. If you hit enter while it is hanging it will continue to the next step of starting the db. . It seems like it is waiting for some input but not displaying that on the screen. I would not suspect any input from a start listener. .This is my experience. Any others see this?

  • Computer won't start up after 10.5.1 update

My leopard updates were a little rocky, but I got everything working eventually. However, after installing the 10.5.1 update yesterday, my computer no longer starts up properly. It hangs up for a VERY long time on the initial screen with the gray apple and little spinning symbol. Sometimes it eventually continues on to the logon screen, other times I get sick of waiting (literally 10 minutes) and do a hard reset. This only became a problem after the 10.5.1 update, and has been a problem every start up since then. I'm considering trying to roll back to 10.5.0 using my Time Machine backups, but thought I would check here first to see whether anyone has had similar problems (or even better, anyone has ideas about what's causing this and how to fix it). This is on my PowerMac G5 Dual 2ghz.
    Thanks.

Zapping Pram didn't help, but probably wasn't a bad thing to do anyway. Another solution I've seen on another post is to start up while holding shift. This also didn't help. I have no external drives turned on, but I do have an 2nd internal drive. I've found a VERY STRANGE way to get it started: if I immediately open the CD/DVD tray while booting up, put the Leopard install disc in (probably any disc would work), and then wait till the computer gets stuck at the gray apple screen before closing the disc tray, it seems to continue starting up fine after closing the tray. Just having the disc in the drive doesn't help unless the tray is open.
