HP Pavilion 11 x2 not booting from USB

I have tried everything I can think of but my HP Pavilion 11 x2 will not boot from USB...I have Windows 10 currently installed on it and need to boot from USB to allow me to install a new OS on the machine.
I have gone into hte bios...(which I can see is a locked bios with very limited options)....I have turned off the Secure Boot option and have set the USB has the first boot device.
But when I hit F9 on startup...it just gives me 2 options:-
OS Boot Manager
Boot From EFI File
I have tried Boot from EFI File...but this does not work..
I know the USB is configured correctly as I can boot from it on my desktop computer.
How can I get this to work?
Thanks in advance

hi,
i stumbbled into your thread while i was looking for a similar answer for my Pavilion X2 10".
mine was delivered with win 8.1 with bing. it was alright to use, but i was unable to bring this machine to connect to my office domain. due to the lack of networking features which is only available in the pro or enterprise version of win 8.1.
i tried many ways to load in a win 8.1 pro os. the disc is authentic, keys are authentic, usb stick or optical drives; it makes no differences. the machine just refuse to boot into the usb disc / stick like all other previous system does.
there isnt an option for the bios to go into legacy mode. however there is an option to turn off the secure boot, but that does not gives legacy support to the make the system boot to usb.
i had probably done the same things you tried, no matter what setting is done to the bios, there is always only 'os boot manager' and 'ueif' when i hit boot sequence (f9).
had tired everything that i can think of, talking to HP was like talking to an answering machine, and they were asking the most bacis questions ... "were you able to select 'legacy boot' from the bios menu?" ... even when i tell them there isnt a legacy boot option in the bios ... they were too amature .
i concluded that the only way to boot to usb is to do it in uefi with secure boot off and encryption turn off in win 8.1 (else it will bring u to bitlocker).
but i am still unable to boot into the usb media to install win 8.1 pro today. i gave up.

  • Optical drive trashed and MB Pro will not boot from USB image

    Hello,
New here but I have searched and tried all I know to get this MBP working right again. My disk drive is trashed and has been for some time now, this is why I have a bootable version of Snow Leopard on an 8G flash drive. When my MBP began acting funny recently and I went to disk utility to verify permissions and the disk. Both failed = must boot from disk to repair, thus my issue. For some reason by MBP will not boot from the usb image I have used previously??? Pressing C or Option during startup does not work. If I press Option, I only get the harddrive option, C yields nothing and the computer boots normally.
Please!! let me know how / what you would do to resolve this. I don't understand why I have previously been able to boot from this same file on the same drive previously to repair my disk / permissions but cannot do so now. FWIW, I tried placing the file (OSX) on my external HDD to boot from, this did not work either (USB HDD).
Thank you in advance for your input!!

It isn't clear what you mean about your HD being trashed or which disk (HD or USB drive) you are trying to repair, but either way you need to start up from your Snow Leopard installer DVD & instead of installing anything go to the Utilities menu & run Disk Utility from there to repair either or both of the disks.

  • Imac 21" mid 2011 can not boot from USB device?

    Hi,
    hope someone can help me.
Bought the new imac 21" and replaced the superdrive with a ssd drive.
Works great but it seems that the imac is not able to boot from any usb device.
I put my osx install disk in my external dvd drive and powered my mac.
While booting up (pressing cmd) the mac does not recognize my external dvd drive. This works great with my MBP late 2008. But the imac can not boot from the dvd drive. Also pressing "c" while booting does not work. Doing that a grey screen appears and after some time mac boots from hdd.
So i installed mac os via target mode over firewire withbmy old imac. This works.
But now i want to install windows on a bootcamp partition.
I can't boot from the windows 7 professional dvd, too. So i tried to create a bootable win 7 thumbdrive. Mac can't boot from this too. Reading many threads in some forum i tried with rEEfit. Reefit shows the usb thumbdrive whike booting, but using this will end in a black screen error from bios: "no bootable device....". Tried a knoppix on the usb thukbdrive, too.... No bootable device....
It seems that there is no way to boot from ANY external usb device like dvd drives or thumbdrives......
What more can i do? I tried for 2 evenings now, but nothing worked out for me......
Currently i don't see any any to install win 7 without an internal superdrive, but can this be??
    Thanks for any comments.
    Kwicks

Internal is definitely the easiest but you can boot from external HD or external optical drive, the mac is just very picky on what works and what doesn't.
For an external drive or usb stick it has to be GUID partition table and have 10.4.5 or better installed on it, for more info check this link out ( http://support.apple.com/kb/ht1948 )
    Hope this helps,

  • Macbook Pro will not boot from USB drive or Macintosh HD

    The Mac in question:
    Macbook Pro mid-2009
    2.4GHz Core 2 Duo
    4GBs RAM
    OSX 10.8.4
Basically I did a fresh install of OSX 10.8.4 and Installed Windows 7 Home Premium 64bit via Bootcamp.
All software was up to date, I had the newest version of bootcamp for windows software, and everything was working fine.
I lent the computer to my dad
    fast forward 3 months.
Windows boots fine and works for about 15 minutes then Blue Screens and restarts. Endless loop.
I did everything conveiveably possible for the Windows side before deciding to work on the Apple side.
Come to find out, my dad had not booted into the Apple side for almost 3 months. So on holding option and selecting the Macintosh HD icon, I got the apple logo with a spinning wheel under it. The wheel spun for about a minute then stuck. No response, so I held the power button down and restarted.
held option, and selected "Recovery 10.8.4" same deal minus the spinning wheel. stuck on the apple logo.
so i plugged in my bootable mountain lion usb (has been used countless times and works, its not the usb) and selected the usb. Same stuck apple logo.
I am at a loss as to what to do now. I dont care about any information on the drive, so i dont mind formatting and such.
But i am at a loss as to how to repair it if i cant access and bootables to do a disk repair or a clean install
Any suggestions would be helpful, thanks.
(btw, ive reset SMC and PRAM and all the usuals and ive internet searched out the whazoo, so yall are my last resort *grin*)

    New info:
Selected Recovery disk in boot options menu and it loaded.
Disk recovery disk verification says there are errors with Macintosh HD but it cannot repair them.
Tried Reinstalling mountain lion from the Recovery screen and followed the instructions, signed into my Apple ID and it started installing mountain lion on Macintosh HD.
It immediately said 4 hours to complete and the blue progress bar started moving slowly.
it says it is "Downloading additional components, your computer will restart automatically"
about an hour later i checked it and the bar was full, but the estimated time was 1 hour 59 minutes and it has been almost 12 hours now.
Just trying to give a play by play so yall have something to work with.
making a Mountain Lion bootable USB as i type, will try that as soon as its done.

    Solved!
    Go to Solution.

    Hello and welcome,
You didn't say which laptop.  I don't know if that will turn out to be important, but it might.
If you used the Windows 7 USB prep tool, you probably have an NTFS-formatted flash drive intended for legacy (not UEFI) booting.  Go into BIOS and switch from UEFI to legacy booting and see if that helps.
Since this was a Win 8 machine the drive is probably GPT formatted.  The Win 7 installer may complain that it can't install to a GPT drive when booted in legacy mode.  If that happens you can use SHIFT-F10 to bring up a command window and run Diskpart.  Diskpart can clean the drive so the legacy installer can format it MBR.
It's also possible to install in UEFI mode but that would require prepping the flash drive differently.

  • G470 not booting from USB pen drive

I have a perfectly working 4GB bootable USB pen drive with an installation copy of Ubuntu 10.10 on it.
It works perfectly on several different laptops (Toshiba, Sony, HP).
But no luck on my new G470 (Core i3), which I bought last week in Russia (no OS, just FreeDOS on it).
Whenever I plug the drive in, it is recognised by the BIOS (i.e. appears in the boot order menu and in the BIOS settings), but when the laptop starts booting from it the laptop just hangs with a blank black screen or sometimes a white underscore in the top left corner (not blinking).
I have tried moving the USB drive to the top of the boot order in BIOS settings, but to no avail.
Trying to switch to the drive under FreeDOS does not give any results either.
Checking on other laptops the drive still works fine, both for booting or reading under different versions of Windows and Linux.
Is there some setting I might have missed in BIOS or maybe a newer version of the BIOS ROM I should flash?
Seems strange that a brand new laptop is not capable of doing something as simple as booting from a pen drive (especially since other computers, like my 6 year old HP and even a 10 year old Toshiba have no trouble in doing whatsoever with the same pen drive).
    Any help greatly appreciated!

It's a G470, my mistake in initial description.
Found the right BIOS update here: http://consumersupport.lenovo.com/ot/en/driversdownloads/Drivers_Show_4480.html
Flashed with new version - 40CN05WW (v2.04) replacing the original one 40CN20WW (v1.07). All went fine - new BIOS installed and works.
The problem persists though. Whenever I choose to boot from a USB pen drive the laptop just hangs with a blank screen not reacting to key strokes (Ctrl+Alt+Del) and I have to power it off with the power button.
    Please help!
    Thank you.

  • PM8M-V will not boot from USB memory stick

I'm using a PM8M-V mainboard and would like to boot from a USB memory stick (disk2go Pure T5, 256MB). The memory stick is bootable and properly formatted. The stick works fine with any other mainboard that I have tested so far. However, with the PM8M-V I cannot get it to work.    (Other makes/models of memory sticks have been tested as well, but to no avail.)
    Can anyone help?
I suspect that this is related to the fact that the PM8M-V BIOS does only support USB sticks as 'floppy drive', whereas on all other mobos I had to configure it as 'hard disk'.
    Any help would be appreciated.
    Best regards,
    meter

Check in BIOS and see if the USB thumb drive is being recognised in the Boot Priority and whether you've select USB Device Support to "All Devices".

  • Ubuntu not booting from usb

Hi everyone could you possibly resolve my Query to why Lenovo fails to see USB after pressing F12 then selecting generic USB drive then complains there's no medium attached when in fact there is further info below
    Computer is a Lenovo t400
    Windows vista
Hi guys I created a Ubuntu boot up USB flash disk But the Lenovo seems to report no USB found very strange I have double checked to verify the USB boot disk was created propery and can verify it was Also if I go into Windows s explorer all files display correctly so its not a empty USB
So Lenovo T400 aptop to blame here?

    Hi,
I usually create mine by hand.  It's a little messy...
I'd expect the Ubuntu USB creator to make a functioning drive.  Have you tried booting it on some other machine?
Hmmm, I don't think you said what machine this is.  Lenovo laptop???
On some of the older machines a USB flash drive is seen as one of the hard drives, not as a USB device.  You have to plug in the USB drive. boot to BIOS, change the boot order of the "hard drives" to put the USB flash at the top, then save and exit.
Then let it do a default boot of the new "hard drive" or hit F12 and select the "hard drive"
One other thought: when you hit F12 the way you are doing it now, is there a "+" or something next to the hard drive entry?  Is it expandable, and if expanded does it show your flash drive?
    [edit] D'oh! OP already said it's a T400.
I'm just guessing here.  Need more information...

  • MBProRetina 13" not booting from USB to reinstall OS, neither is the Internet Recovery Installation working

    Hi everyone,
    so here's my problem:
    1:
I'm trying to reinstall OS X 10.8.2 on my MBPr 13" (late 2012) from a USB drive. The USB drive boots a friends older MBP without any problems. However, when I try to boot mine with it the following happens:
StartUp Disk as well as the Bootmanager at startup show the USB drive's partition as bootable. However when I then try to boot from it I get the no parking sign and thats it.
I also tried to use a second USB key that is USB3. It also boots my friends MBP. But with mine it doesn't even show it in the Bootmanager at startup. It does however show up as bootable in Start Up Disk.
    2:
When I use Internet Recovery or boot from the Recovery partition and choose to reinstall Mountain Lion, the download starts, but just before finishing the estimated time goes up to the time it indicated in the beginning again. If I let it run down again, the same thing happens again, and again, and again until eventually the download is canceled after a couple of hours saying that it was impossible to download the necessary files.
None of these approaches help in my case:

    Help would be greatly appreciated!
    Thanks a lot in advance!
    Matthias

I think you may have misunderstood me. You have a Late 2012 model. The version of OS X is 1 0.8.2, but the build number will be a later build than any earlier version of 10.8.2. Like with most OS X versions you cannot install a version of OS X on a new computer if the OS X version is an earlier revision. So, what I was saying is you need to version that came with your computer. The only way to get that is using Internet Restore.
I suggest you open App Store. On the right under Quick Links is a Support link. Click on that to get assistance with your download issue.

  • New MAC Mini w/OSX Lion - will not boot from USB or external optical drive when attempting to use BootCamp to install Windows 7?

The University recently purchased 6 brand new MAC minis for deployment in classrooms I support.  I am attempting to create a dualk--boot environment comparable to our existing computer systems, only these machines wil be running MAC OS X Lion and Windows 7.  After following the procedures outlined in the BootCamp on-screen prompts, and attempting a few techniques I found in the tech support user-base, I am still unable to get the MAC mini to boot up from the USB flash drive, or from an external optical drive, so that I can complete the installation of Windows 7.  When using the Boot option key at start-up, all devices are displayed suggesting that they are being properly recognized, however the computer boots to a black screen with an error message indicating that "No bootable devices are  found - press any key to continue." I am able to boot into the computer's internal drive, but not from any external devices.  I fully expected that the semi-automated BootCamp procedure properly prepares the USB device for booting, and for installing the Windows 7 OS.

Meh, with the price they take for a drive in Denmark, I don't think it's worth it... They take around 160 $ for the drive (that's the cheapest MacBook drive I could find), and I am not even sure that's the one I need.

  • Pavilion 11 h110nr boot from usb

    Hello,
I'm trying to bit from a USB stick on my pavilion 11 x2 h110nr but the boot menu doesn't have the USB flash as an option (the usb stick is plugged; I tried disabling secure boot).

  • A215-S7444 NOT BOOTING FROM USB NOR CD/DVD, IT HANGS.

I am new here and hope this is the right place to post this.
My A215-S7444 is not reading a bootable USB drive. It skips through it like it's not there. It's seen from the boot menu (F12) but it hangs, keyboard works. It recognizes CD/DVD's normally but it hangs after "Touch any key..." and keyboard is not active. Effectively therefore, I cannot even clean re-install any windows nor use a DVD repair. As for a DOS boot CD the keyboard is not active to select any of the 4 options. Once countdown to 30 is complete it proceeds to boot the default option #1 but immediately hang and keyboard is not active. It does boot the current W7 install to the desktop and recognizes a USB drive and the optical drive medias.
I successfully flashed BIOS via a floppy drive (Fn+B worked) thinking that will help it but the behaviors continue unabated.
The boot sequence is set to boot everything else before HDD and lastly LAN.
I have scoured the web for a how to fix but none so far. I do not know what the problem is and how to fix it. Any help is most welcome.

Jerry,Thank you for the reply, I hear you with regard to it having a bios not UFEI - at least I now know of what there's no hidden secure boot feature I've been overlooking! - the problem is it won't read either dvd's nor usb media, I can tell the bios to boot cd/dvd or usb as the first boot device but it simply won't boot either! I think buying new recovery media won't help as the machine won't attempt to read CD's or DVD's (hence me wondering if it had some kind of secure boot feature...)The machine was working fine prior to the owner trying to upgrade to Windows 10, after attempting the install the machine rebooted and has been stuck ever since at boot - POST to be precise - I just get a blank screen with cursor in the top left of the screen immediately after power up, nothing else. If I hold f2, it readily goes into the bios (but won't obey my boot priority) if I try to start recovery via the bios, nothing happens after the initial bios warning screen,I'm assuming Windows 10 corrupted or removed the recovery partition.  Any further suggestions?  Thanks.

  • R31: how to boot from usb?

I would like to install Linux on my thinkpad r31. Because it seems like the cdrom drive has some issues, I want to boot from usb. I have searched for how to do this, but I cannot find anything.
These are my boot options, with my usb pen drive attached:
    https://www.dropbox.com/s/4idr9gstmt7c7b2/IMG_20140123_195710.jpg
I read on another forum that other thinkpads (t-series or x-series) have the boot from usb option in bios, but the R series doesn't have this option?
What can I do to be able to boot from usb?
this is what I have concerning the bios version:
usb floppy is on top of the boot devices. under hard disks, i only see installes hard disk, no usb drive.. i'm using bios version: 3.110 (1FETF1WW), date: 2004-11-16
    embedded controller version: 02.29.12

From what I recall - it's been a long time since I've last touched a R31 - they will NOT boot from USB under any circumstances.
Media drives are inexpensive nowadays, try replacing yours and install the OS from there.
    Good luck.

  • I can not boot from DVD or USB to install

I have a 27 in iMac with i7 processor. For reasons I wont get into (lets just assume I have the right reason) I want to do a complete fresh install of Snow Leopard and start completely over.
When I use OPT to select the SL DVD to boot, all I get is the apple logo, no spinning wheel, i let it sit that way all night still didnt work. If I force boot the SL DVD using C, same thing. So I tried formatting an external USB hard drive as a GUID drive and had the install residing on there, when I use OPT when booting the USB is not an option, nor is is listed in startup disks either.
I can not do a fresh install, and i have followed loads of tutorials online, but my DVD never does boot.

You need the discs for your computer. No other discs will work.
The retail copy of 10.6.0 doesn't have the necessary drivers for your computer, nor does 10.5. Your computer should have shipped with 10.6.1.
I think the inability to boot from USB is due to an invalid operating system being installed on the drive.
