  • Dm4-2180us USB port smoked

ITEM 1 - I have a Pavilion DM4-2180us with a USB port that is smoked.  When I type START, "joystick" and try to set up the joystick, on one port I get either an all or nothing movement while the good port indicates smooth movement as long as you hold the joystick in a given direction.  Given a product code of QE374UA#ABA, what is the part number for the USB ports on the right hand side as you are looking at the screen?  Where can I get these parts?  How much?
ITEM 2 - On my teams second laptop (same everything), the RJ-45 port lights up with a steaddy white light and the wired network doesn't work.  Un-installing and re-installing the drivers does not help.  Is there any way to buy just a RJ-45 PCB?  Where?  How much?  Or is this a motherboard item?  Again, where can I get this and how much?
Am I better off selling both these laptops 'as-is' and buying new ones?

  • BIOS for my HP Pavilion dm4 notebook i3-2310m Windows 7 (64 bit)

    Hello,
I need some help in downloading a BIOS update to my HP Pavilion dm4 notebook i3-2310m Windows 7 (64 bit OS). I went to this web site after reading replies to other users' problems.  http://h10025.www1.hp.com/ewfrf/wc/softwareCategory?os=4063&lc=en&cc=us&dlc=en&sw_lang=&product=5051... I downloaded the following BIOS update file and tried updating the BIOS (using InsydeFlash, which popped up when I run the sp56058.exe file). The InsydeFlash displays a message that this file sp56058.exe is not for my machine.
    Released: 2012-02-08
    File name: sp56058.exe [1/1, 4.25M]
    Version:     F.27
    Compatibility:
    Microsoft Windows 7 (32-bit)
    Microsoft Windows 7 (64-bit)
    Microsoft Windows XP
Could some one please help me as to how I should go aboutupdating my BIOS, because my HP Pavilion dm4 Notebook battery does not charge, but is up and running when it is connected to the electric outlet.
    Thanks in advance.
    Sean

    Hi @nsean
Welcome to the HP Support Forums!
I understand that you are having problems with your notebook batter and updating your BIOS.
It is strange that it is saying it is not for your notebook when you got it from the support page, assuming of course it is the correct support page.
Have you tried a previous version of the BIOS, from the same drivers page?
Also have you tried to troubleshoot the battery and power itself?
You may want to look through these pages related to the battery and power adapter to see if anything clicks.
Using and Testing the AC Power Adapter
Computer Does not Start (Windows 7, Vista, XP)
AC Adapter Battery Charging Indicator LED Does Not Display Immediately When Plugged In
Improving Battery Performance (Windows 8, 7, Vista)
Let me know if any of that helps.

  • ALPS Touchpad Stopped working on Pavilion dm4

I have a Pavilion dm4-2184nr.  It has the latest touchpad driver and bios installed.  Recently, when using the touchpad, the pointer started jumping around to the point where the touchpad was unusable.  A restart didn't fix it so I tried uninstalling and reinstalling the driver.  Now the touchpad isn't working at all.  It doesn't show up in the device manager nor is the light on the touchpad on.  However, now when I re-install the driver it says I am installing the same version of the one installed, which is confusing because all other indications are that the touchpad isn't configured properly.
    Any ideas?

The touchpad is probably dead. The driver can be installed on your notebook with a non-functional touchpad, that is why you are seeing it in the device manager. I would recommend calling HP support at 1-800-474-6836 to have it repaired or replaced.

  • Pavilion dm4 Hard Drive Replacement

    So, I have a HP Pavilion dm4 1165dm windows 7 64 bit, around a yeah and a half old.
A week ago, the hard drive suffered some sort of permanent fatal event and quietly left this mortal coil.  If you want details: any kind of boot was impossible.  System recovery couldn't even see the drive, an external reader couldn't talk to it, and it crashed any machine that tried.  I was forced to send it out for data recovery- they tell me the drive has hard errors and at least one of the reader heads is non-functional.  They will be able to recover stuff for me, but the drive is a loss (yeah I know, I know- I should have backed up).
So as I see it- I've got two problems to overcome.  One- I need a new hard drive.  Two- I need the stuff to put on my hard drive (it came with nothing- I don't have disks for the OS, drivers, nothing).  What does HP offer in terms of fixing these problems?  How much do these options cost?  Who do I talk to to get them?  (I've tried calling tech support, but there's been a bit of a language barrier.  Also, I'm out of warrenty, and they want $60 to troubleshoot before they'll even talk about hardware and/or software replacement).
    This question was solved.

    Hi:
You can order a 500 GB 7,200 hard drive to replace your existing one.  You can't go smaller if you want to use recovery disks.
I like this place to order PC hardware.
    http://www.newegg.com/Product/ProductList.aspx?Submit=ENE&N=100007605%20600030594&IsNodeId=1&bop=And...
I would go with the first one listed, but that is up to you. Look at the reviews and prices and pick the one you think will suit you the best.
You can order recovery disks from HP. You will need to call them as the link to the website to order them is broken.  Cost should be less than $20.00
You will need the full model number of your PC. I don't see a dm4-1165dm.  I see a dm4-1165dx, and you will need to provide the serial number.
If HP doesn't have a set of recovery disks for your PC any longer, you may be able to use this workaround to install W7 on your new HDD.
If you can read the 25 character Microsoft windows 7 product key, you can download plain Windows 7 ISO files to burn to DVD's for the version of windows that came installed on your PC, and that is listed on the Microsoft COA sticker on your PC's case.
Burn the ISO using the Burn ISO option on your DVD burning program and burn at the slowest possible speed your program will allow. This will create a bootable DVD.
Use the 25 character product key on the PC to activate the installation.
The key will activate either a 32 or 64 bit installation.
Then go to the PC's support and driver page to install the drivers you need.
Link to the W7 ISO file downloads is below.

  • I have downloaded the tv shows Homeland and Dexter. They have ended up in different places. Dexter is where is "belongs" in my itunes library on my NAS drive. Homeland ended up on my hard drive in the itunes/music/tvshows directory. Anyone know why?

Several months ago I bought and downloaded Homeland. Earlier this month I bought
Dexter Season 7. They have ended up in different directories. My iTunes library is
on a NAS drive and Dexter was stored there (where it belongs). For some reason,
Homeland got saved to my Mac hard drive in the itunes/music/tvshows directory.
This seems odd everything else I have downloaded, music, other tv shows, movies
have been saved to the proper place. I haven't changed the path to my iTunes
    library in years.
Now, iTunes has kept track of these two tv shows and I synced them both
to my iPad. The only reason I know they are in different places
is because my wife couldn't find them on the NAS drive.
Mostly out of curiosity, I'd like to know why this happened and how to keep it from
    happening again.
Oh, it's iTunes 11.0.3 running on a MacBook Pro with OS X 10.6.8.
    Thanks
    Bob

I don't think it is easy to move part of a collection unless you don't care about the metadata such as date added, etc.  You can copy the files to the other drive, delete in iTunes the references to the copies still on your computer, then hold down the option key while dragging the files on the external to iTunes so it doesn't copy them back to your internal but just references them where they are.  You have to remember to do this each time.  Either that, or set preferences so iTunes does not automatically copy any file to your media folder when added but leaves them all where they land on your computer.  You can move them by hand around the computer, but not between drives.
You could try Dougscript "Move Files To Folder" but I don't know if this enables iTunes to track items moved to a different drive.  iTunes doesn't really like using multiple drives.
As for using Time Capsule, I have seen various takes on this.  I recall reading somebody saying it isn't a good idea to have a backup drive competing for dual purposes.  My take on it is, TC is a backup, period.  If you keep your movies on it and the TC drive dies, you lose your only copy of the movies.
How often do you really watch these movies?  Yes, it is nice having them appear in iTunes, but unless you are watching them every day then it isn't a huge burden to have them on another drive.  Frankly, if I had iTunes movies I would probably make a whole different library for them and start from it with the external drive turned on when I was in a movie mood.

  • DISAPPEARING KEYBOARD LETTERS - PAVILION DM4

Has anyone else experienced the white painted letters coming off the keys of a new Pavilion dm4?
The letters started coming off shortly after it was purchased.  We bought the laptop for my wife to use and, understandably, she has not wanted to part with it for repair as we do not have a spare one.  So now, a few months after purchase, despite only light use the letters have completely or partially gone from 14 keys.
I am astonished that HP has produced a supposedly high quality laptop with such a shoddy keyboard!

It has happened to me.  Within two months, the N was worn off.  They replaced the whole keyboard.  Another two months or less, the N wore off again.  They replaced the keyboard.  I thought it strange that N wore off as that is not a letter like E or S used a lot but it is the dominant finger of the dominant hand so perhaps more pressure overall typing.   I waited another several months before warranty runs out next month.  Now the N is gone, also S, F, E, V, L, and M are nearly gone.   They are replacing it again but what about in a few months when it happens AGAIN after warranty.  I AM NOT HAPPY.  This is something so basic that HP screwed up.   They need to make a new keyboard with letters in top left corner so they are not struck as much and/or a better imprint.

  • Re: Pavilion dm4 2070us; Wifi connectivity icon not showing correct status

    Hello,
Did this ever get resolved? My laptop is having the same problem. I'm connected to the internet, and even when I go to another house, it still shows as though I'm not connected when I am.
Please let me know if there's a resolution.
    Thanks.

    Hi @SophiaKight ,
Thank you for visiting the HP Support Forums and Welcome. I have looked into your issue about your HP Pavilion dm4-2070us Notebook and having issues with the Wireless for Windows 7. Here is a link for troubleshooting the Wireless connection.
Here is a link to the HP Support Assistant. Just download and run the application and it will help with the software and drivers on your system it has built in Wireless troubleshooting assistance. If you have told your Notebook to connect automatically to your home network unless you tell it to connect to a different Network it will show connected.
You will have to disconnect and reconnect to a different Network.

  • Memory Upgrade for Pavilion DM4-1210TX

    Hello,
I have a first gen Pavilion DM4-1210TX running WIndows 7 home on 2GB memory.
    The current 2 GB memory is a PC3 10600S. I assume it is a DDR3 at 1333Mhz.
Problem is, I've tried to upgrade by putting in 1 brand new Kingston 8GB DDR3 1333Mhz ram. Of course I took out the original 2GB ram first. The BIOS recognizes the new 8 GB ram.
But all I get is a Blue screen after the starting screen.
I'm told my generation of this laptop is not compatible with all brand new DDR3 memory.
Is this correct? And any reason why?
    Thanks.

    Hi,
What is the model of your Kingston RAM ? May be they have same speed but different characteristics. Please try the following vendor (for a similar machine):

  • Left touchpad button sticks on Pavilion DM4

My wife has a DM4 2180us Pavilion notebook and lately the left button stick or does not register a click. Looking at it I believe the problem is that its rubbing against the chassis frame around the button. Have tried cleaning around it with a cotton swab and rubbing alcohol. But although it helped a little it still is sticking. Kind of upset that we have not even had this PC a year and already have replaced the WiFi card and have had issues with it shutting down randomly. Fan runs all the time and seems to be struggling to keep it cool. But that's yet another issue that I can't find a solution for.

The touchpad is probably dead. The driver can be installed on your notebook with a non-functional touchpad, that is why you are seeing it in the device manager. I would recommend calling HP support at 1-800-474-6836 to have it repaired or replaced.
