Hp pavilion dv-7 2140ev malfunction, GPU broken?

as mentioned i own one hp pavilion dv7 2140ev
OS: windows 7 64bit
i somehow managed to damage my laptop by accidentaly dropping it from my desk , about 1,5 meter. after this it gives me some horizontal lines at startup , then it shows my desktop with a message: Display driver stopped responding and has successfully recovered. and gives me a BSOD. then it restarts and repeat . as it's not on warranty and i have some experience in laptop anatomy , i disassempled it , cleared it from dust , everything seemed normal except some broken plastic on the right side. Motherboard seemed ok so i put it back . also the keyboard bends in some way and enough keys are missing plus one screw from the monitor base is dead. though it works normally on safe mode(no lines, no bsod) as i can write this, BIOS is clear , too. i m afraid that my radeon 4650 is failing in some way , so i need to change whole MB to make it work , as 4650 is on MB and not separated and this means a lot of money. any thoughs?

today i tried to boot normally (not safe mode) and it booted, i m writing this now and it is stable, i can browse videos on youtube with music , i checked system , gpu is recognised.. but i still have these lines , i ll try a different nomitor , and reinstal os anfd i ll post again.

GX740 GPU broken

Hello everyone,
I was hoping that someone here could provide me with some advice or tips
I have a MSI GX740 with a Mobility 5870
It is about 3 years old.
Never had any big problems with it aside the fact that from time to time it would autoshut down because of the gpu temps running high.
Now however im afraid the gpu is broken.
I enterd the bios to check on the bios version when the fan started spinning bigtime and after a minute the laptop shutdown again ( guess due to overheating eventho i do not know why) with the difference that now it will not start anymore.
laptop turns on but thats it. getting black screen.
I suspect that my gpu has finally broken down since earlier that day the laptop also shut down suddenly a couple of times due to overheating.
Now im already hunting for a new mxm gpu tho i have to admit that there kinda hard to find.
What i however would like to know is if the gx740 has an onboard gpu that i could use in the meantime while im searching for a replacement 5870 gpu.
I would also be very happy with any other advice you could give me regarding this laptop.

Thank you for your reply.
Yes i saw that post but technicly its not an upgrade but rather a replacement.
I want to have the same graphics card back or if thats not possible maybe a bit slower.
I never took it apart myself but brought it away regulary to be cleaned.
As i said i never really had any big problems except the overheating problem that everyone knows.
Took care of that right in the beginning by updating the vbios.
Im definately not new in this brange so i do know what im looking at when its open.
I even opend it myself yesterday to clean and refitt some pieces with the hope that it would start again.
No luck unfortunatly.
Do you know if this model has an onboard gpu that might be activated in case the big gpu breaks?
Would sure give me atleast something while im searching/waiting for replacements.
Btw any advice on replacing this card with in case im unable to obtain a 5870m?
I do have to say that im looking for something lower then since heating issues prevent me from looking the other way.

HP Pavilion dm4 case, bezel, and hinge broken

About a month ago, I found my casing coming apart as I opened my Pavillion dm4. This has never happened before. I didn't do any damage to it. It just happened out of the blue. Then, the left hinge began pushing on the front case of my laptop and eventually broke it into pieces. When I open my laptop, I have to very carefully pry open the left side so it does not break any further or ruin my screen indefinitely. I have already paid about $200 to replace my display screen because the broken hinge casing somehow ruined a huge chunk of pixels. I have images, but it won't let me attach them. I have had it for about 2 years so my warranty is up. I'm debating just throwing my laptop in the trash and purchasing a new Samsung or Macbook or something, just not another HP! I have called tech support and they won't help me at all until I let them process $200 on my credit card. HAHA I am so disappointed in this company and in my investment. Anyone know how I can repair my laptop?

Major issue! GPU busted! Need help urgently!

I bought this HP pavilion g6 2230tx model around 1.5 years back and since then i have experienced quite a lot of problems with it like hdd crash, heatsink failure, motherboard failure. I'd sent it a lot of times for repair and a lot of my money has already been wasted on it.
Recently, after working fine for about 1 month a new problem took place. Its GPU busted! i dont how, but all of a sudden this dreaded TDR error started coming ("AMD display driver stopped responding and has been recovered"). I tried to sort out this issue in every possible way (trying older driver/ reinstalling OS/ flashing BIOS) but no help. Even the work around by microsoft isn't working! I'm sure that it's GPU is busted.
Now what i need to know is what can i do now? Is this even reapairable? Can i replace the GPU? If yes what'll be the cost?

I see that you are looking are replacing your GPU in your Pavilion g6. Unfortunately, the GPU is soldered onto the system board or motherboard. You would have to look at replacing that again.

USB EHCI chipsets causing Windows 7 x64 failures in Pavilion

I use Acronis TIH 2012 to backup the primary and logical partitions on my pavilion g6 notebook, currently running windows 7 x64 with 8Gb RAM. I have a problem on this particular notebook, it looks like a hardware compatibility issue, and this query is about the USB hardware of the notebook compared to other pavilion machines. The problemI can successfully backup the primary partition (C: drive) of the internal SATA HDD to a separate logical drive on that internal HDD, but when I try to backup the C: drive to an external USB3 drive the backup starts, creates two 4.7Gb files (out of a usual 6 files in the set) on the external drive and then fails. Fails HARD - usually I need to completely remove power (mostly by removing the battery) and do a cold boot to get control back. The failure seems to occur when the software thinks the usb drive has disconnected. The softwareThe TIH application is a 32bit item that works fine on a 32bit windows 7 platform (desktop and laptop) both using external usb3 drives as the target. Those machines however only only 4gb RAM installed. Other software - eg windows explorer and demanding video editing programs - work fine using data on the external usb drive. Pavilion hardwareA member (joey) on the Acronis forum has reported a case where a specific combination - windows 7 x64, more than 4Gb RAM and the nvidia EHCI chipset - caused his Pavilion a6403 system to malfunction using an external usb3 drive with this combination. The questionMy notebook and Joey's are members of the HP pavilion family. Both use the same windows 7 x64 OS, and have more than 4Gb RAM. Yea as I stated earlier, after installing these drivers all the usb ports stopped working in the current windows 7 install.

MSI R9 280x problems

Hello i have just gotten a new MSI R9 280x with building a new pc, when i installed all the drivers part from the GPU ones everything was fine, but when i installed the GPU drivers it started to crash such as "Display has crashed and restored" and sometimes it would just come up with a blue screen saying 0x00000116 error.
Now i was thinking its my GPU drivers so i try to install the newest ones and that does not work, still have the same problem
I also tried installing new motherboard drivers and bio's drivers and still nothing. So i would want to know is my GPU broken or my motherboard because everything for my motherboard has been working fine and as soon as i install GPU drivers i start having problems. I have tried to use the integrated graphics and that was working fine (This was when i took the GPU out my pc) with all the drivers for that working fine

Replaced Hp with new hard drive but now i cannot install windows 7 recovery disks

Ok, so my laptop is a hp pavilion dv4-2165dx that has a broken screen and sometime after best buy tried to fix it the hard disk blew. I bought a new hard disk and put it in the computer and i got the official recovery and installation disks for windows 7. The hard drive is recognized by the computer and does start the recovery manager but it gets to 1% and does not go further. I let it run all night and the next morning it said that the cd failed. Did it fail because i have to connect an hdmi cord to my lg tv to see anything? Or was it because of something else?
I researched and found that with a new hard drive i will have to partition it and then format it to work with windows 7.
My question is, if the computer doesnt boot or let me use windows how can i partition and format the new hard disk? I have an older hp laptop as well that works efficiently in regard to its age (7) yrs. i wonder if i can buy a usb to sata/ide cord and attach the new disk to my old laptop and partition/format it there? Idk

I see that you're trying to install Windows 7 on a replacement hard drive. I will try to assist you with this.
You definitely could use another computer to format and partition the drive. I'm not certain about the cables you've mentioned though (looked with goolgle and you can get usb to sata cables). If the computer is a desktop you should be able to connect it internally to just do the format/partition.
If the recovery disks worked correctly, then you should have the option to do the format and partition via Windows. This could be an indication as well that there's an issue with the disks.
Which leaves you with the option of obtaining another set of disks to try, or trying to partition first then installing. The easier would be the latter.

White light, no display or startup

So I'm deep into the trail of tears with my MBP 2.4 a1229. I very cleverly spilled some hot tea on my display which essentially killed it. 2/3 dead but everything else worked. I hooked it up to an external monitor and used it for a few days while waiting for replacement parts. No problems with the functionality of the computer at all. I ended up replacing the display and the keyboard. Upon reassembly there were a couple issues. The display worked and the keyboard worked but the computer wouldn't automatically sleep when you closed the cover. The screen would stay lit with it shut and just go to sleep after the designate time. I didn't think this was a huge issue and was just going to take it apart again once I got the time and see where i missed something. Well 4 days after the initial repair I put the computer to sleep before I went to bed and tried to wake it up in the morning. White light in the front is on but no one is home. I have powered it up and down a number of times. the drive spins up but there is nothing on the screen, no start up tone at all and no action other wise. I have tried an external monitor without success. I've reset PMU, changed seating and reseated RAM and tried with and without the battery. Researching i've found a number of issues that might fit like the logic board but the delay in the issue and the sleep problem make me wonder if it's not something simpler. Anyone think this might be some sort of hinge or sleep sensor issue? Any input would be greatly appreciated. Just as a note, I'm 4 hours from the nearest apple store so...

The sleep sensor consists of a reed switch and a magnet. The magnet should be on the edge of the display--you can usually find it with a paperclip. I think we may have the same Mac, and on mine the magnet is on the right side of the display a little over halfway up. When you close the lid, the reed switch would be in the corresponding spot under the top case near the optical drive.
My guess is that the reed switch could be malfunctioning or broken, especially since the computer wouldn't sleep when you closed the lid. Either that, or the magnet was missing or out of place. It's also possible its cable was damaged.

Polygons and red dots on screen

Sometimes, when I scroll down on web pages, green and red polygons take most of the screen.Oftentimes, red dots appear on the screen when I am playing a videogame (mostly in dark scenes).What is the problem and how is it solved? Hi All many motherboards can handle more than the official maximum RAM. Found a 4 GB module on Ebay and want to upgrade my trusted old Pavilion (2008 model, Nvidia 9300 GPU, E4700 CPU). Am looking for an E 8400 CPU and will give it a SSD and an external sound card. Can it handle that 4 GB RAM module? Hoping for the best, I'm upset that HP didn't offer a mainboard with 4 RAM slots

Hi, Older HP PCs are very touchy with dimms. The NAPA motherboard is not spec'd for 4 GB dimms. See the below image. The Wolfdale E8xxx would be a good choice for a processor upgrade. Look for the E8400 or E8600.

Everything was working fine till I tried playing games. Unigine Haven runs fine IN WINDOWED mode, if I try and run it in FULL SCREEN the screen turns black and the PC freezes. Same thing with all games, they all crash in full screen. Had unigine heaven start in full screen once. I tried to google similar issues and found only one with a similar issue who apparently never got it fixed.
Is the GPU broken? what's wrong I haven't got a clue. Damn PCs all this money down the drain. Nice PC to surf the web with, it never crashes in Windows or when watching youtube videos at least. Or when running games in windowed mode, unfortunately most games start in fullscreen.
I'm rather disappointed :(

Well there are a bunch of errors
Loads of these type of warnings:

Some of these type of errors:

Although looking at it this error seems to happen every time when screen goes black I think, cause shortly afterwards is another error:
The previous system shutdown at 9:11:30 on ‎3.‎10.‎2014 was unexpected.
Which might also be from me hitting reset.
And critical:
The system has rebooted without cleanly shutting down first. This error could be caused if the system stopped responding, crashed, or lost power unexpectedly.
It didn't lose power though, probably just me pressing reset.
I have no idea what any of this means, I guess it's not good at least.

Strange glitches during gaming

I'm an ut2k3 fan and have been playing this game for a while with these settings (signature), yet recently, after all my probs which i've posted before (ram fried, monitor remaining standby etc), there is still 1 remaining.
I'm sure u have heard of frames per second, number of pictures shown to u in a sec. Basicly the higher the better.
Now, for my pc, that should definatly not be a problem (good specs and tweaked ut2003.ini) but it is since a week.
When i start a game my fps (frames per sec) stay stabilised @ high rate (93 being blocked by gamesource @ online games as not to go higher and need more bandwith), but after a short while i get glitches. The fps drop quickly from 93 to 20 (unplayable) and after 3-4 secs go back up for 4 secs of 93 and go back down etc etc.
Yesterday, i could connect a sound to the glitches, the sound of my cpu-fan speeding up.
Can it be that a malfunctioning psu is causing this problem or would u guys think that there was more involved to it?
I have thought of 3 possibly malfunctioning hardware:
- broken mobo (more specificly the agp bus)
- cpu
- psu
Tried the sandra benchmark tool to get more info, but from my understanding the cpu etc has a grafic that does not match the other reference grafics. That is for example, all references have a downword grafic and mine starts low, goes up, goes down,stays there, goes down and goes up.
Altho this could mean the cpu is broke, it could also mean that it doesnt get the amount of power it needs from the psu.
Does anyone of u know a way to be sure its one of these 3?

Yes, if your PSU isnt providing enough power and you are playing a high-resource, high power game it can distort graphics or cut it off totally (which is your case).. i am having a graphics card problem as of now, my graphics are distorted when i play UT2004 (ESPECIALLY when zooming in with the lightning gun).. i have a 9800 Pro, and i am taking it back today, but if that doesnt solve the problem, i am DEAD sure is is my 12V rail on my PSU.. i have a 450W, but only 14A on 12V rail... kinda low, so that could be causing it.. if you have a spare PSU, use it and see if the same prob stil happens... otherwise, last resort is your motherboard... what i would do:
1. Unplug EVERYTHING in your case but essentials
2. Plug Motherboard (with ram and CPU) in
CPU fan
You HD with OS on it only
DVD or CD drive (if needed to play game)
- and your video card
3. See if you still have same problem, and if you dont you know it is your power supply... If you still have the problem, it still might be your PSU, but you really dont know
4. If you can get a good 450-500 watt PSU with a 20A - 12V rail to test with, see if it STILL wont work
5. If all this fails, still same problem, it would have to be your AGP slot so you should return your MOBO to MSI

GTX 780 Twin Frozr Gaming Running too hot!

i recently bought a new gaming pc with a GTX 780 Twin Frozr Gaming. On idle the card is around 35C. When playing games like Metro Last Light it gets to 80C really fast.
On IDLE my CPU temp is 30C and my System temp between 35-40C.
Is the cooling on my GPU broken?

How much airflow does the card have? Is your case really cramped?
How about the fans, are they spinning on the card?
Do temperatures get any higher than 80C?
I wouldn't be worried to be honest, if temperatures don't get much higher than 80C (like not over 90C) and the card isn't throttling back - you should be fine.
But if the card is throttling back to prevent it from getting any hotter - I may be inclined to think something is wrong - perhaps not enough airflow, or the card needs the TIM reapplied. I do not think this is the case though.
