Dear All,
I wish to upgrade my laptops Harddisk from 250 GB to 1 TB..
My laptop model is HP Pavilion dv4t-1300 CTO Entertainment Notebook PC
1) I need to know what all are hard disk compatible with my laptop
2) I need the maintenance and service guide for my laptop as i'm unable to find..
also i heard about hp laptops tatooing ....whats that ? would the new hard disk baught from outside won't work with my hp laptop ?

The new hard drive will work fine. Tattooing applies to motherboards, not hard drives. It needs to be a 2.5 inch wide and 7 or 9.5 mm thick SATA drive...it can be regular mechanical a hybrid or a solid state drive.
As the best bang for the buck I recommend a 7200 rpm mechanical drive like this:

HP Pavilion dv7 6031eo hard disk voodoo, making 2 physical disk appear as 1 physical disk

My HP Pavilion dv7 6031eo hard disk is failing. 88 Bad sectors.
I was planning to bring new hard disk. I decided to look under hood to see what kind of disk I would need.
Suprise suprise, I already had 2 hard disk in my HP Pavilion dv7 6031eo. Windows detects only 1 hard disk. It is detected as TOSHIBA MK1059GSM.
So 2 things are possible :-
HP performs the feature of a "spanned disk" at the mother board level and hides dual/double disks from the OS. It then presents to OS a single disk of 1TB as TOSHIBA MK1059GSM (not sure why TOSHIBA)
HP forgot the plug in the second hard disk during manufacturing
Which one is it ?
Now the thing(s) is/are failing as per SMART values.
How am I suppose to replace the disk ?
Do I need to replace both of disks, even though only a single disk is failing as per OS ?
Will replacing the disks with any other disk work or the HP firmware will go nuts ?
Why don't you document these things ?

I would replace the hard drive. That is a 640 gig 5400 rpm drive and you can get a bigger faster drive for a reasonable price.

If the computer is still working well enough to boot into Windows you can do a complete system backup and recover all your data, settings, programs, etc onto the new drive or we can help you do a disk clone of the old drive to the new.
Since your laptop will actually hold two hard drives simultaneously you could even put the old drive in the secondary bay so you have a copy of all your old stuff right at hand.

HP Pavilion dv4t-1300 fan is always on even with low CPU

I have a HP Pavilion dv4t-1300 Entertainment PC with Windows 7. Even with a low CPU (around 20%), my laptop fan is always on, and the noise is annoying. Why is it always on? How do I turn it off (I have a separate laptop cooler)?

There's a free programme called speedfan to moniter temps, my fan runs all the time its normal it runs at 30% unless cpu and things get to high temps, you can turn off the fan in the bios but i wouldn't recommend it.

How do I take the face plate off of a DVD/CD drive from my HP Pavilion dv4t-1300?

Pavilion zv5343us hard disk upgrade

Hi,
I have HP Pavilion zv5343us notebook which has 40GB hard disk. I want to upgrade it, I would like to know what is the maximum size that my laptop can support and what model will fits it?

zv5000 series uses a PATA hard drive (old school). Yours is the Intel Pentium 4 version and should be able to run a drive larger than 120 gigs. You are safe 100% to get a 120 gig drive.; and if you can get past that the sky is the limit. I have seen up to 500 gig laptop PATA drives but they are rare and pricey...250s and 320s are more common and a bit more reasonable. Get a 7200 rpm drive if you can find and afford one as it really peps up older laptops. I had the AMD version of the same laptop but at the time I had it 80 gigs was the largest laptop hard drive you could buy so I have no direct experience with larger drives. Unfortunately, the most common PATA drives you can now find in the market are 160 gigs. I believe you are safe in installing it based on the fact the hard drive vendors are offering larger drives for it and guaranteeing compatibility. Just make sure your BIOS is up to date and that you are running SP3 if you are using Windows XP. Here is a 160 gig drive that will work. You have to reuse the caddy and connector piece from the old drive. Post back if you need more instructions. The hard drive is under the rectangular plate in the corner of the bottom, held down by 4 screws at the corners of the plate.

Pavilion G6-1203ey: Hard Disk Test FAILED, but can still boot into Windows

I have HP Pavilion G6-1203ey laptop. After installing Windows (7 ultimate, 64 bit) and some drivers on it and after several restarts, it hanged at Windows logo and I had to turn it off with power button. Then after turning it on, it gave me the option to repair problems which are preventing it from starting up, from there I let it to restore the computer to an earlier restore point and after a restart the Windows was working again. After that I decided to do a hard disk check just in case.
The Hard Disk Self Test ended up with a message: Hard Disk 1 Full (305). Then I installed HP Unified Extensible Firmware Interface (UEFI) Support Environment and did hard disk from there. I chose the comprehensive test from the options, but it finished fairly quickly (in ~1 minute) with the following output:
Testing Drive: 1
Hard Disk SMART Check : PASSED
Hard Disk Short DST : FAILED
FAILURE ID : PTTU22-5T774L-MFPV4K-60S003
PRODUCT ID : A5Q15EA#B1R
Hard Disk 1
Hard Disk Test : FAILED
A bit more background:
The previous owner told me that the original HDD was faulty which is why he replaced it with this one last year. He said that other than that there has been no problems with the laptop. The Windows is working right now and this HDD is quite new so I would not have expected any problems with it, but the results from the previously mentioned tests seem troubling. Is there a reason to worry?

I read your post and looked into the failure ID that you posted regarding the failed Short DST test. That error is indicating a hard disk failure meaning that if it hasn't failed it might soon. If everything is working I would considering backing up your data on a regular basis just to be safe. You could have a local technician take a look at the hard drive to see how close it is to full failure.

HP Pavilion g4 2131tx, Hard Disk Error after Blue Screen of Death

Hello! I do not know what section shoud i post this problem, I apologize for it.
So my laptop is freezing for a days after BSOD. When I leave my laptop overnight for downloading torrents, I always receive the message "Windows has recovered from unexpected shutdown." when i woke up.
I already disabled all non-microsoft services, start up items and yet the desktop is still freezing right after the welcome screen but the welcome screen does not load too long.
The desktop freeze for more than a minute then it will go back to normal again until my laptop went to BSOD
and received this error from UEFI "Hard Disk Error." after restarting.
I ran the Hardware Diagnostic Test and I got the result:
Failure ID: RW042K-6MT6RP-MFPX1F-61BK03
Product ID: 65H69PA#UUF
I tried cleaning up registry and defragmenting disk and still no luck.
* My laptop is HP Pavilion g4 2131tx and still under warranty until June 2014.
* I am using Windows 7 Ultimate 64bit Service Pack 1
* My RAM is 4gb with a processor of Intel Core i7
* My AV is microsoft security essentials
* I am using Advanced SystemCare for cleaning up registry and defragmenting.
I was wondering if I could change my hard disk while it's still under warranty.

See Page 39. It can take any 2.5 inch wide 9mm thick laptop SATA hard drive. They are industry standard, interchangeable.

Hard Disk Upgrade on my 27-inch Late 2009 iMac 11,1

Hello Everyone,
I would like to upgrade the harddisk in my iMac from a Seagate 1TB model to a Seagate 2TB model.
I have read in the forums that for this particular model of the iMac, i have to ensure that i buy the same model of the hard disk as what came in my machine originally. So i have figured that part out. I am thinking of getting a 2.0TB Seagate Barracuda XT.
Am i expected to run into any problems post upgrade?
I read somewhere that Apple has done some firmware upgrade which pretty much limits user options for disk upgrades. Result being, your FAN goes mad and runs at rull speed and etc etc..
Any and every feedback is useful.

No problem. I am not happy with this situation. This is an easy swap minus the Fan issues and I don't want to mess with the software solution.
I did call Mac Sales and their ACT was to order Part Number 922-8827 and attach it to the outside of the HDD and plug that into the logic board. This was said to be the most consistent method to getting a successful HDD swap without fan issues.
I am looking for that part. I will keep everyone up to date.
Btw, my iMac is the 11,3 2.93 GHz i7 27" (Mid-2010). It shipped with a Seagate HDD 7200.12.

Pavilion dv6-1125es - Hard Disk problem

I have an HP Pavilion dv6-1125es (out of warranty) with Vista Home Premium (32 bit) that runs very slowly and freezes but this does not seem to be caused by malware. I was considering reinstalling but decided to run diagnostics first. In the System Diagnostics (Setup), the Start-up Test (F2) finds no problem in the Memory Test, Hard Disk Quick Test or Hard Disk SMART Test.
In the System Diagnostics Hard Disk Test (F4), the Quick Test indicates Passed (100%) but the Full Test shows:
- 00% Complete
-‘Replace Hard Disk1’(in red) followed by ‘testing’ (in white)
The SMART check indicates Passed
On pressing Esc to continue, the next screen shows (in blue)
- “Hard Disk Test” Failed
- “Hard Disk 1 FULL” (305)
The Diagnostic Log shows Result: 0305
I would be grateful for help with the following points:
1) Is the ‘0305’ error unfixable? Does it mean replacing the hard disk?
2) The current disk is 320 Gb. What is capacity limit for this model dv6-1125es?
3) If I install Windows 7 on the new disk, can the 64 bit version be used on this model?
4) As this laptop has also been running hot, I would like to try to clean the fan and ventilation system. Where can I find instructions on this?

To answer your questions.
1. The 305 error does mean you will need to replace the Hard Drive.
2. You can certainly go up to a 500Gb HDD without any problems - see the procedure starting on Page 69 of your Maintenance & Service Guide.
3. Yes, your processor is 64bit capable - see Here for confirmation of this.
4. There are instructions for cleaning your notebooks air vents Here.

Pavilion dv6z-7000 hard disk short DST failed

I bought this HP Pavilion dv6z-7000 notebook (windows 7 64-bit) in the middle of September as a gift for my cousin who's in China. After I received my computer I found it was always not responding (e.g. When I clicked "my computer", it freezed and showed "not responding" for ~10min). As I was going back to China and there's no time to mail it back to HP for reparing, I reinstalled the system (windows 7 64bit) by myself and it looks fine for a couple of days. But when I came to China and was going to give it to my cousin, it showed the same problem again. Yesterday it got even worse -- it was unable to shut down or start windows.
When I did HP F1 start up tests this morning, each test (Start-up, Run-in, Tuneup, Hard Disk) failed at Hard Disk Short DST:
Failure ID: M4GG6W-67V68K-QFPK1F-60QG03,
Product ID: A3G60AV
I'm wondering whether HP has some service center in China that can repair it for free? Or do I need to bring it back to the US?

Incase you have a Global warranty you can get it fixed in China or else you can call HP Technical support and inform the same but the Part will be delivered only to US. The best for you will be to call HP Technical support and check the warranty and then decide.

MacBook Pro hard disk upgrade shows question mark folder

I recently bought a 1TB hard disk for my teenaged daughter's MacBook Pro.
I formatted it, used Carbon Copy Cloner to clone the existing drive. I even made sure to create the recovery partition.
I restarted while holding the option key and chose the new drive. It booted fine so I checked in System Preferences to make sure it was selected as the boot device.
I opened the case and swapped the drives. Put it back together and restarted only to see the question mark folder!
I tried booting while holding the option key and now I get the choose a network prompt.
I am desperate and hate the thought of disappointing my daughter. It used to be that I was her hero who could fix anything now I'm the guy who asks too many questions and doesn't put enough money on her debit card. Granted she busts her butt getting awesome grades and I was upgrading her drive so she could continue her video yearbook for her school. So I shouldn't complain but it would be great to be her hero again.
BTW, I am not a newbie to the tech world but I don't do nearly as much in the Apple arena as I do in the PC world. Then again I've been a senior tech in the industry sine before IBM had a PC. In fact, my first real work was on a 6502 processor that used the same machine code as the Rage of the day, the Apple ][. All that to say I usually can find my way around a problem but this one has me stumped.

I tried to reboot with the option, command P. And R keys pressed. I heard the ding several times it still showed the question mark! I also tried the shift option and it only displayed the network selection. Also I tried to press C so I could boot from USB and it didn't work either.
If I cannot get this to work I fear my only other choice is to use a FireWire enclosure. This isn't a good option as my daughter does mostly movie work and iMovie has this terrible "feature" that forces all movies to be stored in one place. It sure would be handy if it allowed movie projects to set the storage location individually. I suppose I could simply move all the movies to the drive and try to find a way to point all iMovie projects to the external drive.
Unfortunately, my daughter is one of those Mac users who isn't savvy enough to use anything but the default settings. Heck I've tried to explain to her that she ought to get rid of the big files once she has done her work. That's why her drive is always full.

Options for hard disk upgrade on my MBP 15" (late 2007 - Santa Rosa)

I suspect this is a common question here in the discussions forum, judging by the similar questions posed by other members.
I am however, half-way into my research on hard disk options for that matter and would like to ask some specific questions in order to ensure that my upgrade is not problematic (I have been quite happy with my MBP so far :-))
The model I have is the A1226 (Intel Core Duo, 2.2Ghz, 4GBs. This currently has the 111.79GB Fujitsu MHW2120BH hard disk, which is almost full now; hence, the need for an upgrade.
I quite fancy the WD Scorpio Blacks, particularly the 500GB ones, even though the 320GB ones will also do to a lesser extent. My questions on this brand/type are:
(1) Will it have an impact on the heat generated inside the Macbook (vs. my current situation)?
(2) Will it have an impact in the battery consumption (vs. my current situation)?
(3) Will there be an issue with the SATA speed? My MBP supports 1.5GB/s while this drive operates at 3GB/s.
(4) If I opt for the respective model with the free fall sensor, will this function work with my MB? (NB: Not sure if relevant, but the System Profiler reports: Suddem Motion Sensor: State = Enabled)
My aim is to clean up my current disc, upgrade it to the new bigger one and then re-install Mac OS X Leopard, upgrade to Snow Leopard and then re-install all apps. All files are backed up anyway with TimeMachine, so no issue there. If you can think of any potential issue with the upgrade and what I intend to do further after, please share it.
The machine is out of warranty - but that doesn't mean that I want to cause damage here...

Yes, that is what it was developed for. Since that time, more and more HD manufacturers have incorporated it into the HD itself. There are two schools of thought on this: 1. The "SMS" built in to a HD is more properly "mated" to the HD mechanism itself, so could save a nanosecond or two engaging. 2. In the nanoseconds it takes to engage, a nanosecond here or there is not going to matter. Personally, I believe the latter. There is no need for an "SMS" enabled HD in an SMS enabled Mac. I'm sure some others believe differently.
(NB: Interesting that the issues with SMS and the WD Scorpio have been documented in Wikipedia: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/SuddenMotionSensor).

No mention there of whether it is applicable to the drives with the free fall sensor or the ones w/o it (or even both).
It actually does state it is in reference to the "aftermarket hard drives already equipped with anti-shock features." That writeup is dated however, as I believe there are more issues reported with Seagate these days.

Recommended Hard Disk Upgrade for 4,1 (Early 2008) Macbook?

I've read so many disaster stories out there (primarily from Amazon.com reviews) about upgrading mac Hard Disks, I wanted to get a real recommendation.
I was hoping to get a 750GB or 1TB internal HD replacement, and probably stick with 5400RPM to save battery life.
Any recommendations?
The "disaster stories" I heard were issues of performance degradation, stalling (due to waiting for the disk to spin up every couple of minutes) and disk failure, all in relation to the fact that they were going into macs rather than PCs.
Any suggestions? What has worked well for you?

With a 7200rpm drive you might notice a slight decrease in battery time. I've put one in a Early 2006 Model 1,1 for my niece and she's had no problems with it.

Time Capsule Hard Disk Upgrade - how can I move old backup to new HD

Yesterday I bought a new 3TB hard disk to replace the old, internal time capsule 1TB hard disk. Then I placed the old one in a 3.5" USB case and tried to move the TM back-up from the old HD (now usb connected to the mac) to the new (now)-internal HD of the Time Capsule (connected with ethernet to the mac).
I'm using mavericks, and I followed this guide, but something went wrong and the migration stopped during the night, forcing me today to start a new backup from zero.
I deeply googled, looking for a guide that could explain how to complete the upgrade without a glitch, but there are infinite number of guide on how to change hard disk, while a totality of zero guides on how to complete the migration process after upgrading the internal HD.
Has someone succeeded in doing all the process?

          • • What's being backed-up - 501,74 GB

I don't see anything you have done wrong.
The fact that it started to copy the file and you left it running is fine.
Where things go wrong from there is anyones guess.. did the computer just decide to go to sleep?? Have you turned off sleep and any auto shut down. That can affect copying of large files.
Did you verify the sparsebundle.. any error or corruption in the old sparsebundle could prevent it copying.

It could be later firmware which IMHO is just not stable.. I would run no later than 7.6.1 in an old TC.
And of course Mavericks.. it uses an major change of networking protocol.. and so it could just decide in the middle of the night that the TC is no longer there.

Can I just say.. this is a better idea anyway.
Put the old disk in a draw.. and simply keep it for 6months and if you never need it by then .. you can wipe it and use it for something else. A clean fresh TM backup is far more likely to work properly in case you need to do a recovery especially if you upgrade installed Mavericks.

Hard Disk Upgrade - iMac 17" Flat Panel G4 1.0 GHz with USB 1.2

I’m considering upgrading the internal hard disk with the following:

I read that others have successfully installed 500GB IDE disks. I have a two related questions:
1. Do these larger disks cause any heat or power supply issues?
2. I've seen several take-apart instructions. It seems like there are subtle differences with the various Flat Panel models. Does anyone know which instructions apply specifically to my model (iMac 17" Flat Panel G4 1.0 GHz with USB 1.2)?
Any insight and/or experience on this topic would be greatly appreciated.

It wouldn't have to be this IBM model, in fact I like the sound of the Western Digital machines mentioned here, but I just wondered if anyone knew if the mac CAN support more than 120BG.
