HP Pavilion dv6 card reader won't detect some SDHC cards

Notebook Hp Pavilion dv6-6104so
Windows 7 - 64 bits
The notebook's card reader won't detect some of our SDHC cards. We have updated the driver to the latest version, Realtek PCIE 6.1.7601.90, and the BIOS, but it still won't recognize some of our cards.
We have six SDHC cards, three SanDisk (4, 32 and 32 GB), two Kingston (8 and 8 GB) and one Integral (4 GB). The card reader recognizes four of them (4 and 32 GB SanDisk cards and one of the two Kingston cards). What is strange and that you may have already noticed is that the card reader recognizes only one of two cards with the same brand and capacity!
About the two cards that don't get recognized in our notebook, they work properly in their corresponding cameras and are detected without problems by another HP Pavilion dv6-3138so notebook card reader, as well as by two netbooks of ours from two different brands.
When we connect the cameras (one Canon and one Sony, both point-and-shoot) to the computer via a USB 2.0 cable, the laptop detects the cameras and through them we can access the cards.
We purchased the laptop less than two weeks ago in Helsinki, Finland.
Thank you in advance for your help!

Hey Everyone,
Using a high capacity card in a standard card reader slot will cause this issue. Im going to guess that the cards you ar having issues with are the SDHC cards and not the standard SD cards. As Naoto stated, by using a camera as a card reader you an workaround this. You can also look into SDHC card reader adapters. Here is a good article on the SDHC cards: http://goo.gl/lj5Fq
Hope this helps!

  • HP DV5t 5-in-1 card reader does not detect my SD card

The 5-in-1 card reader slot of my HP dv5t was working fine until yesterday, and reading my Canon SD card perfectly. However, today upon inserting the card, the card reader is not detecting the SD card. The card doesn't even show up in my device manager. My SD card has no issues since it works perfectly fine on other laptops (I even tried it on another dv5t and it worked). My guess is that there is something wrong with the hardware, since the card doesn't get recognized by the reader even when I use it on Ubuntu. Can anyone please suggest any solution?
I tried contacting hp customer care and after an excrutiating wait of 1 hour or so I had to hang up - out of boredom. My laptop is under warranty but I am really pissed off with hp, I think hp laptops have some of the worst hardware. Also, it takes ages until you can speak to a customer care executive. Can someone please help me? If hp were to give me 70-80% of my money back I would happily swap hp for a T61 or even a Dell!

I'm having the same exact problem on my dv5z.  I even tried downloading and reinstalling the drivers, but it appears to be a hardware issue.  I had a similar problem with my wireless card early on and I think it may be a build quality problem.  Any suggestions other than dealing with sending the unit in for repair?

  • HT4101 The SD card reader won't import images to the iPad. I purchase 10 months ago, and haven't had a problem with it until today. How do I remedy this problem? I'm about the go out of town and prefer not a travel with my laptop.

My SD card reader won't import images from the SD card. I purchased this product 10 months ago and have had no problem with it up to now. How do I remedy this problem. Using the product allows me to travel without a laptop ...Please help!

Have you tried to give your device a reset? Sometimes that helps with glitches. Hold down the sleep and home keys, past when you see the red power down slider and until you see the silver apple. Let it reboot and try again.
ALso, the card reader will only see files that are formatted correctly. If you just took the images from your computer and put them onto the card, then it won't work. They have to follow a strict naming convention. There has to be a folder named DCIM on the card and then all those images have to have a file name of exactly 8 characters, DSC_3857 for example. Your camera makes this naming structure but if you manually put the photos on that card you may not have replicated it.
Is this a card you've used before? If it's a new card and is empty then the iPad won't read it. Also if it's SDXC it won't read those either (XC cards use a file structure that the iPad can't decipher)

  • Token and smart card reader are not detected on Mavericks if not plugged on a USB port during system boot

Well, both token and smart card reader are not detected on OS X 10.9 if not plugged on a USB port during system boot. So, if I am already working within the system and need to use my certificates I have to plug the token or smart card reader on a USB port and restart Mavericks.
Token is a GD Starsign and Smart Card Reader is a SCR3310 v2.
    Thoughts?

SCS is a very good app, since I've read that Apple has discontinued support for PC/SC interfaces after the release of Mountain Lion.
(My previous installation was a Mavericks upgrade from Lion)
However, I don't know what and how to debug using Smart Card Services. Do you know any commands to use?
Apparently, the SC reader reports no issues: the LED is blinking blue when no smart card is present and becomes fixed blue when a smart card is inserted – according to the manuals, this shows that there is correct communication between the OS and the CCID reader.
I don't know what to do; I'm beginning to hypothesize it's a digital signer issue. In fact, my smart card only supports one application called File Protector (by Actalis) to officially sign digital documents. This application seems to have major difficulties in identifying the miniLector EVO.
The generic and ambiguous internal error comes when I try to manually identify the peripheral.
Athena CNS is one of the Italian smart cards and is automatically recognized and configured (so it's correct – no doubts about this), while "ACS ACR 38U-CCID 00 00" seems to be the real name of the miniLector.
(I'm assuming this because System Information also returns that the real manufacturer is ACS... bit4id is a re-brander)
However, when I click on it and then tap OK, it returns internal error.
As first attempt, I would try to completely erase&clean File Protector files to try a reinstall. Then, if this still doesn't work, I'd debug using the terminal.
    So:
    - Do you know any applications to 100% clean files created by an installer?
    - Do you have in mind any solutions that I might have forgotten?
Thanks in advance from an OS X fan!

  • Firewire card reader won't mount since 10.4.9 update

If anybody knows of a resolution to this issue, I'd surely appreciate it if you would share that knowledge!
I have two SanDisk Firewire ImageMate Compact Flash card readers (model #SDDR-80 Rev:B). They've been very reliable (and fast) - have had them for over 3 years now. Never had a problem with them or their interoperability with either of my Macs (I also own a PowerBook G4 17" (1.67Ghz).
The other day (4/17), I installed the 10.4.9 (Combined) update on my PowerMac without a hitch. My card reader was connected at the time, and I quickly found out that the reader would not mount on my desktop after the update, but would appear in the System Profiler as "Unknown Device".
Just for the "fun of it", I installed the same update on my PowerBook, repaired permissions, then attached my other card reader (same model). Same friggin' thing!
A glutton for punishment, I disconnected the card reader, reinstalled Tiger from scratch (Erase and Install), and applied the 10.4.9 (Combined) update as before. To my utter disgust, I got the same behavior.
Now there's no doubt in my mind that the problem here is with Apple's 10.4.9 update, and that I'll likely be downloading 2GB's of images via a very slow USB connection directly from my camera until Apple releases yet another update, but I thought I'd give all the Apple geeks out there a shot at this first - you know, just for the fun of it.
    Thanks in advance!

    Abbott1,
As you pointed out, I've done a little detective work here already - as I do with any problem I've have with my Macs. I find that in virtually every case, I'll resolve the issue myself - which is why this is the first time I've posted to Apple's discussion board.
You see, once upon a time, I provided 2nd tier Mac technical support in addition to acting as a liason to the engineers for a huge printer company whose name begins with an "X". I've been working with OS X since it was beta, and have been honing my Mac "detective skills" ever since. Now, I realize that I sound as though I'm tooting my own horn here, but I wanted to point out that I'm not another Mac newbie who just made the switch.
In my experience, taking this issue to Apple's Genius Bar will have only one of two outcomes - they will either deny the problem is Apple's, or they'll tell me to wait for an update - neither of which resolves the issue itself.
As it happens, I may very well end up showing the problem to one of the guys at the Genius Bar anyway, as I'm having an unrelated problem with the "G" key on my PowerBook - it has decided that it no longer wishes to reside with the other keys on the keyboard, and keeps trying to extricate itself just to prove it.
I knew it was a shot in the dark when I posted the original question, but I was hoping that some genius out there would beat Apple to the punch and have figured out a solution to the problem that didn't require me purchasing new card readers to replace perfectly good ones. I sure hope this problem doesn't exist in Leopard.
The card readers don't require any 3rd party software - there are no drivers, firmware updates, etc. - they define "plug-n-play".
    Thanks for posting!

  • [SOLVED] MSI Wind card reader -- no filesystems detected on devices

Had this issue since I bought my netbook (MSI Wind U120) several months ago.
At first I could not mount memory cards until I rebooted the netbook--now card filesystems aren't being detected at all.  The card reader itself appears as /dev/sdb at all times, regardless of whether a card is present.  Inserting a card results in...nothing.  No dmesg updates, no filesystems listed under /dev/sdb*, nothing.
My Nokia E71 smartphone is experiencing similar behaviour.
Solution: The devices can be mounted directly via /dev/sdx (vs. /dev/sdb1, etc.)

Hah! Wouldn't you know it, it does mount with /dev/sdb! I never would have thought to try that.
And *ahem* times being what they are we can't really afford a room =]

  • Card reader not mounting SanDisk Extreme CompactFlash Cards

    Hello,
I am having this issue with reading a CopactFlash card I recently bought. It is a SanDisk Extreme UDMA card. When insterted into a card reader the reader does not mount like it does when SanDisk Ultra II cards are mounted. This computer is fist generation MBP and runs SL OS. I tried it on another MBP with lion on it and the reader works just fine. Is there somthing that I need to download and install do you think?
    Thanks in advance,
    Farzad

If the card reader is to old it may not be able to read UDMA cards.
I know I upgraded to UDMA, I wrote to Lexar about the problem. They replaced the card reader with a newer model that worked.
You might ask SanDisk if they will do the same thing for you.

  • EFilm card reader with a fuji film HD card can't transfer images from iphoto to sd card

I have a MacBook Pro running OSX.  I am using an eFilm card reader with an XD picture card.  I want to transfer my images from iPhoto on my macbook pro to this XD picture card.  iPhoto doesn't recognize the card and photos will not transfer.  Help!  There was one photo on the card and it successfully transfered from the picture card into iphoto but I can't get it to do the reverse.  Thanks so much for the help.

Select the photo(s) in iPhoto and export (file menu ==> export - see this user tip for export options) to a desktop folder and then drag the photos from that folder to the desired location on your XD card

  • HP ENVY 17t Quad - SD Card Reader - can it utilize an SDXC Card

My specific specs are at bottom of posting.
I have looked thru the Maintenance and Service Guide and cannot find any info regarding the SD card reader specs.
My Camcorder uses an SDXC  64 Gb card. I don't want to put the card into the 17T reader if it can't read the SDXC card since there is a potential for the SDXC card to be damaged by a reader which can't properly access an SDXC card.

    Good Morning mykejb,
As I stated your specifications do not state the exact cards it supports.  I regret that  I am unable to give you a yes or no answer.
If you check around the card reader itself, sometimes on the bottom of the notebook, it will list the supported card types.  If not all I can suggest is try and see.   If it seems if the card is too small for the slot, you may need an adapter for an SDXC card.
Here is a link to SD/SDHC/SDXC Specifications and Compatibility( from scan disk support).  Please note this quote"NOTE: Internal card readers on laptops from 2008 and prior may NOT support SDXC cards. SDXC cards will work in SDHC compatible readers (not SD readers) if the computer OS supports exFAT. For more information on exFat see: Operating Systems that support the exFAT File System"

  • Sd card reader on MBP not recognizing SD card

The SD card reader on my MBP is not recognizing a new SD card.  I have tried taking it out and putting it back in.  I looked in disk utility, but do not see it listed.  "I also tried image capture.  What else can I try?

If you have photos on the SD card try using Image Capture to download the photos to a folder on the Desktop before you reformat the card with the camera.

  • Some SDHC cards mount-others do not

Inserting 32GB SDHC Lexar cards into this brand new iMac.  The one that just started shipping a week ago.
The Lexar Platinum II 32GB SDHC 100x card has no issues.
The Lexar Professional 32GB SDHC 600x card will NOT mount.  I tried two different cards.
I have the older iMac from summer of 2011 that would accept either.
This seems to be an issue with the new 27".
    Anyone else experiencing this?
I read on a forum put the card in and put the computer to sleep, upon waking the card would be mounted.
I tried this and the computer would NOT wake from sleep.
Pulled the card from the SD slot and then the iMac would wake up.

Yes indeed! The iMac so-called SuperDrives seem to become choosy about what discs they recognize. Last year mine recognized a software CD (TaxCut) - this year it would not (H&R Block), it just spit it back out. Same problem with a particular music CD, worked last year not now. The drive recognizes another data CD just fine. Also will play a home-made DVD made on a combo VCR-DVD recorder/player. As I write this, it is now playing another music CD just fine. Apple should own up to this problem. The drive does not fail, its just becomes very particular (and unpredictable) about what it will accept or reject.

  • IMac won't detect airport extreme card

i just bought an airport extreme card for my 1.25 GHz G4 iMac. i have installed the card in my computer, but for some reason my computer hasn't detected the card.
i read some suggestions in other discussions, and have tried almost everything. i have reset my PRAM and run the apple hardware test. the card still has not been detected. i have also installed the latest software update for airport. still nothing. someone also suggested resetting the PMU, but i read up on that and don't see how that would help with an airport extreme card.
i'm wondering if maybe i didn't do a good job of installing the card. it seems easy enough, but after i inserted the card and attached the antennae, the card felt sort of loose in the slot. i don't know if it's supposed to be a tight fit or not. i pushed the card in until it go any father, but i didn't want to push it too hard for fear of breaking something.
    any suggestions?
    thanks.

  • Card Reader won't Show Up!!!

HELP!?! All of a sudden my SanDisk Imagemate won't show up on my desktop when I insert my compact flash card. Usually it pops up on my desktop and iPhoto also opens but today.... nothing. I've even tried restarting because that usually solves the problem. Any ideas or suggestions? I haven't done anything new or different.
It worked fine last week, I downloaded over 400 pics.
(It does show up as connected when I check "about this computer")
    17 iMac FP 1.25GHz   Mac OS X (10.4.3)   iPhoto 5.04

I wish I could help you but I'm having the same problem myself.
See my post on Dec. 30: Compact flash disk won't work after upgrade to 5.0.4
I can't see any of the files on two of my compact flash disks. I did plug the disks into an underpowered USB hub and thought that might be the problem. Did you do anything like that? Check out: http://resale.headgap.com/bobsmactips.html.
I have a Canon EOS 20D. I found out on the Canon web site that there is a firmware update that addresses communication problmes with compact flash cards. However, they want me to copy the update to the disk and then onto the camera. But, until I see the disk in my Mac, I can't copy the firmware update.
Any clues would be a big help.
