HP Pavilion DV6 Restore/Data Recovery

I'm taking a look at a friend's laptop that was acting up. It refused to connect to the internet and when/ if it ever did the screen would go completely white locking you out of even task mngr. I installed AVG Free and detected a couple trojans. The problem seems resolved. It was working fine with several restarts until Windows detected updates.
After installing the updates and restarting Windows seems unable to display anything past the login background. Booting the windows diagnostic or system recovery leads to the same login background. Neither user account is displayed and there's nothing to do besides a hard shutdown.
I was able to open the HP Advanced System Diagnostics and ran a Start-up Test. It returned a DST failure with a failure ID of 94get9-5086ab-xd0021-60t803. The HDD is a 320Gb WDC WD3200BEKT-60V5T1.
I would love to simply perform a system restore but I have two problems. First, I need a way to back up the important user files. Second, I need a functioning method for performing a restore.
I'm able to boot into Linux from a USB but I can't get the HDD to mount. I don't know if the drive is encrypted or not. If anyone has advice for me on this I'd be grateful cause I'm not sure how to go about it. I don't have any hardware to connect the HDD to another system so I'll need to get the current OS working or find a way to boot to another that can access the drive.
As for the system recovery, since the default method isn't loading, is there something I can download from HP that will boot from a CD or USB? Or, is there another way to perform a restore outside of starting up Windows?
This question was solved.

Hi:
A DV6 would most likely have a W7 Home Premium OS installed.
See if rubbing the product key with a jelly bean works. It does from time to time if the key isn't too obliterated.
If you have a W7 home premium disk already (that you just used for a fresh install), just use the product key from the notebook to activate.
Otherwise, do this...
If you can read the 25 character Microsoft windows 7 product key, you can download plain Windows 7 ISO files to burn to a DVD for the version of windows that came installed on your PC, and that is listed on the Microsoft COA sticker on your PC's case.
Burn the ISO using the Burn ISO option on your DVD burning program and burn at the slowest possible speed your program will allow. This will create a bootable DVD.
Or use the Windows 7 USB/DVD installation tool to compile the ISO file you download from Digital River. Link and instructions below. You need a 4 GB flash drive to use the USB method of compilation.
http://www.microsoftstore.com/store/msstore/html/pbPage.Help_Win7_usbdvd_dwnTool
Use the 25 character product key on the PC to activate the installation.
The key will activate either a 32 or 64 bit installation.
Then go to the PC's support and driver page to install the drivers you need.
Link to the W7 ISO file downloads is below.
http://www.mydigitallife.info/official-windows-7-sp1-iso-from-digital-river/
If the jelly bean trick doesn't work, you will be forced to purchase a set of recovery DVD's because they don't need a product key to work.

I have a 3 year old HP Pavilion DV6 3034nr Entertainment Notebook having Win 7 home premium installed that I wish to restore to factory settings.I made another partion and changed the drive letters of existing partions. I have either lost or never made system recovery discs. Now how can i do that....

    Hi there:
    Follow this useful document:
    http://support.hp.com/us-en/document/c01867418
If the recovery partition in the laptop HDD has been corrupted or removed, then you may not be able to recover to factory using that. But you can by ordering recovery USB from HP directly & using that.

    Hi,
To get the Recovery Partition back, you would need to perform a 'Factory Reset' using your Recovery DVDs/media - remember to back-up any of your personal files first.
If you don't have these discs, you can order a replacement set using the link below.
    Order HP Recovery Discs.
If you have any problem with this link, order them directly from HP.

I try with same method to recovery bios with pen drive but without solution.
    someone can help me Please!!!

Try reviewing this post to see if any of the information in it helps you as this case sounds very similar. The thread also has a link to a YouTube video that worked for someone.
    http://goo.gl/bVrAD
Also, did you try the two methods in this document exactly as they are outlined? As long as there is no underlying hardware issue, it should work.
    http://goo.gl/WQb43
You mentioned you tried the pen drive method and it did not work. What exactly did not work about it? Any error messages? What were the exact steps taken?

If you have anything plugged into a usb port remove it. Do not touch any keys while performing a system recovery.
Why did you ask the questions about the partition types? Did you modify or change the partition types? If you modified the recovery partition to dynamic then a recovery will not work.
Did you make a recovery disk set or a usb recovery media flash disk?

  • HP Pavilion DV6 Model: 3307sz Recovery Disk Missing

    Hi
My notebook recovery disks are missing. How can i download the recovery disk?
    Awaiting For Solution
    Praveen

    Uh....
Sorry but your model doesn't have reocvery disk to order yet.
What you could do is to use a backup software or the preinstalled microsoft backup tool to do a partition like C drive backup.
When your system fails, you could restore it without starting over with factory defult and all that stuff.
Sorry because of different timezone I might not be able to help/reply you right away.IF that happens I deeply apologize!

  • HP Pavilion dv6-6100 se recovery kit

Please I bought my Laptop from Dubai, and its warranty has expired, I can't order a recovery kit niether from US nor Middle East, The option of the recovery kit or recovery disc is not available in the middle east site, and the product itself is not recognized in the US site, please help me ordering a recovery kit for my laptop.

As the computer was purchased in Dubai, you will have to contact HP in that country / region to purchase HP Recovery Media. HP Recovery Media will not be available in the US and can't be sent to the US by HP. Please contact official HP Customer Support in the country / region was purchased in, via the HP Worldwide Support Portal, to see if HP Recovery Media is available. You will need to supply a local address of a friend or relative and have them ship you the recovery media. Software may not be covered by the warranty and there may be a charge for the HP Recovery Media.
Alternatively, if you can still read the 25-digit Windows product key on the Microsoft COA affixed to the bottom the computer, you can install Windows 7 using this key. Please see "How to Install Windows 7 Without the Disc" for instructions on how to download Windows 7, create the installation media, and install Windows 7 using the 25-digit product key from the Microsoft COA on your computer. Using this method will not install any HP customizations or value-added software and you will have to manually install all needed drivers.

  • HP pavilion dv6 restoration incomplete after recovery

I recently try to facotry reset my Hp pavilion dv6 using the recovery usb I make with the HP program when I brought this laptop, but it said "restoration incomplete".
I have ran the hard drive check and mem test at the BIOS and there isnt any problem. I also did a full format on the hard drive and it works. So I dont think there are any bad sector on hard drive.
I did factory reset, miniimze windows install...all the option I can had on the recovery problem but It doesnt work.
Once It finish the installation and laptop is restart, it automatically boot into the HP recovery program and said "restoration incomplete".
I am wondering how can I find my license product key so I can install a windows 7 or any other solution?
    Thank you

Please HP answer this question as I'd love to try Windows 7 also.  P.s. never had so much trouble with a laptop!!!!  Runs hot, can't system restore, can't use the simple things I'm used to on any other laptop!!

  • Hard Drive Failure on HP DV 6000 Pavilion laptop Windows-XPsp3 OS - Need Data Recovery Help

Hard Drive Failure on HP DV 6000 Pavilion laptop - Need Data Recovery Help
HP Pavilion DV 6108 NR, RG365UA, purchased in late 2006 at Best Buy, with Windows XP, upgraded to Service Pack 3. It has a Fujitsu hard disk, 60 gigabyte, partitioned into C: and a Recovery D:.
Windows tries to boot up, but goes to blue screen with the message: "Unmountable Boot Volume" for one second, then just keeps recycling until I force a shutdown.
BIOS Phoenix, hard drive test result: " #1-08 Fail "
I ran a disk analysis/recovery program on the Cdrive and it seemed to show the directory structure intact, and it was able to recover some files. I was using the free one from Seagate (which only recovers small files). The second pass didn't run so well, and during the third run the program said I should not proceed further, and I should contact a professional disk recovery company.
However, the D drive seems to be intact, so, I wonder if the disk is corrupted or just some aspect of the logical C drive is bad.
How can I get the D: to run the recovery software on it? The recovery disks, made by Best Buy, only proceed to the R / F / Q option screen, and when I press R, I get a blue screen every time.
Tapping the F10 key during startup gets me nowhere. Ditto the F11 key.
I dont care about the hard disk; it is the data (files, docs, images, etc)  that I want.
I contacted HP to order recovery disks but they are no longer available for my computer.
Any suggestions would be greatly appreciated!

    Update...
I found a website that offers the following:
    http://www.computersurgeons.com/p-13442-recovery-kit-435422-001-for-hp-model-number-dv6108nr.aspx
Recovery Kit 435422-001 For HP Model Number dv6108nr
    Price: $27.00
Recovery Kit Set (An Entire Image of the Computer hard drive when the computer was new)
But I wonder how useful it would be. Early XP , no doubt. And if my hard disk problem is a mechanical fault, would any recovery disk even work? The disks made by Best Buy when I bought mine new in 2006 don't do anything more than go to the R /F/ Q screen and then goes to a blue screen when I press R (to recover the OS and apps and data files). And, as I wrote, it is the data that I want, not the disk drive.

  • HP Pavilion dv6-6b47dx gets "Restoration Incomplete" from Recovery Manager.

I got my son's older HP Laptop, and decided to restore it before using it for myself.  Previously it was working OK.  An HP Pavilion dv6-6b47dx gets "Restoration Incomplete" from the Recovery Manager.  I have tried running the recovery manager from both the HD partion and the DVD media I created.  The HD and Memory pass.  The wireless f12 key is off, and can not be turned back on from the keyboard.  Some previous post have suggested the wireless being off could be a problem.   Any suggestions would be greatly appreciated, Thanks!

    Hi
No that Recovery media won't work in your laptop.
ISO file can be used to clean install. You'll have to get all the 25 character alphanumeric product activation key printed on the COA label on the back of your laptop to be clearly & legibly readable for activation of ISO after install.
    Tutorial: http://www.sevenforums.com/tutorials/219487-clean-reinstall-factory-oem-windows-7-a.html
For additional drivers you can get them here:
    https://h10025.www1.hp.com/ewfrf/wc/softwareCategory?cc=us&dlc=en&lc=en&os=4063&product=5197401&soft...
    AMD chipset driver :
    http://support.amd.com/en-us/download/chipset?os=Windows%207%20-%2064
Download, save them to a USB and install them from there during/after Win 7 installation.
You have to first install chipset, restart system - then audio driver-restart, graphic driver- restart, ethernet controller(LAN), network controller(WLAN & Bluetooth), card reader, touchpad , Protect smart hard drive protection driver, quick launch software in order.
I could see that your model came with Windows 7 Home Premium (64-bit) pre installed.
    Here is the ISO file:
    http://msft.digitalrivercontent.net/win/X17-58997.iso
Windows 7 Home Premium x64 English

    Source: http://www.w7forums.com/threads/official-windows-7-sp1-iso-image-downloads.12325/page-2#post-124821
Download , save it to another PC, then make a bootable DVD/USB by mounting this ISO on to it by using software like Imgburn (choose lowest speed while burning to DVD).
    Imgburn : http://www.imgburn.com/
This will be your Windows 7 installation disc.
