HP Pavilion dv7 2215sa memory upgrade to 8gb becomes unstable

I have a HP DV7 2215sa laptop running Windows 7 Home Premium 64bit ed and it has 4GB of Ram.
I wanted to upgrade the mem to 8GB to bought two 4GB mem from Crucial and experienced the following problems:
1. Turned on the laptop after the upgrade and got 'Windows is loading file' message. After that, windows didn't load and saw the HP logo again (as you would do when you start the machine up). Then was presented with two options..... start windows normally or load windows repair (something like that, I can't remeber the exact message). With Either option selected, the machine just goes into the same bootup loop and you then presented with the same two options.

2. Machine boots up after system check and......windows starts to load up, but crashes when I get to login prompt.
3. Restart machine again, Windows doesn't load and I get those previous two options again.....selsct load windows normally and....windows loads up! I manage to log in! I casn browse the web, load applications...and its quite fast but notice something strange. The screen flashes (just the once) and my wireless connection dies for about 5 minutes, i.e. get crossed symbol in the wirless icon as if to say its been disbaled when its not. The blue light is still on for wirless though on the laptop.
4. Wireless recovers. Run Go on to firefox, try to update it.....the update fails. Load itunes, it requires an update.....when it tries to download the update from apple, it gets a download rate that reminiscent of dialup...Kill, the download and acquire the latest file from Apple. Windows then tells me that the download in unverified and that it cant be trusted. **bleep**? Try this a number of times and then eventually it manages to accept the file somehow. But the drama doesn't end there, th install cycles about 5/6 times and then it eventually installs the application. (It was the 64bit version, 32bit couldn't be installed as advised by apple).
5. Rebooted the machine about three times and managed to log in all three times but still seemed unstable (i.e. firefox still didn't update).
6. Next day, started the machine.....BLUE SCREEN OF DEATH.....something about memory management. didn't get the error message recorded but knew it was to do with memory.
I've got my laptop working again by re-installing my old memory.
The modules that I bought were....... DDR310600 1.5V 4GB (x2)
My current modules are Samsung PC3-10600 2GB
I didn't try installing one module at a time to see which one was faulty because I was annoyed and just returned the memory back.
Has anyone had a similar experience with the same if not similar laptop? And if so, how did you manage to upgrade your laptop to 8GB?

As you might expect we get a lot of these questions and the first thing you are going to want to have is the Service Manual:

You have the ATI Radeon HD 4530 graphics. I believe you are limited to dual core processors, not Quad Core and the fastest you can install is a
Intel Core2 Duo T9800 2.93-GHz with 6-MB L2 cache and 1066-MHz FSB 507951-001
The T9600 is not listed. I know the T9800 is about $75 on eBay so not too bad.

Your maximum memory is 8 gigs; that is 2 x 4 gig modules. Unfortunately you are using the older DDR2 memory and it is quite a bit more expensive than the current DDR3 variety. 8 gigs of DDR2-800 laptop RAM is going to set you back over $200:

I don't know if you are going to do the processor upgrade yourself but with your own labor you would be looking at almost $300 and if you have to pay a tech to install the CPU think in terms of $450 total.
Your license for Windows 7 Ultimate 32 bit would include a right to run Windows 7 64 bit from the same Key Code and I think you should just reinstall a 64 bit version. As things are, you are not fully taking advantage of 4 gigs of RAM so upgrading to 8 gigs would be useless unless you also go to 64 bit Windows. This will require a complete wipe and reload, not an upgrade install. I would advise against Windows 8 on that machine. If you decide to go there figure another $60 for a copy of Windows 8 64 bit, at least.
Let me offer another suggestion. Your laptop has space for 2 hard drives. Move your original 5400 rpm 500 gig drive to the seconday slot and purchase a 240 or 256 gig SSD for something like $150, or even a 128 gig for around $90. You could even forget the upgrade to 8 gigs RAM. 4 gigs is plenty, but I would upgrade to 64 bit Windows to unlock all of the 4 gigs.
Using an SSD as the main boot drive will make you think you have added 1 ghz + to the processor speed.

Pavilion dv5-1000us memory upgrade

I have an HP Pavilion dv5-1000us Windows 7 (product # FE850UA#ABA)
notebook installed with 4GB memory (2

How to know which hard drive contains the OS in Hp Pavilion dv7-4069wm? Upgrading.

I'm thinking about upgrading one of my hard drives (320GB ea) in my HP Pavilion dv7-4069wm laptop for more storage. I would like to keep the drive that contains the OS to avoid the hassle of making a copy, but I'm not sure which one that is. I haven't replaced a hard drive before, let alone a dual drive. I recently added more RAM and noticed both hard drives looked the same. Can anyone tell me how to know the difference? .

HP Pavilion dv7-6b76eo SSD upgrade

I have the HP Pavilion dv7-6b76eo and I made a post here:

I have 2 slots on my motherboard, currently only the 1 being used of my HDD, which is slow and sux! I want to slot in an SSD next to my HDD and have my operating systems on the SSD and the HDD as storage... pretty straightforward, eh? It is!
Just wanna know now if it matter about the SSD's producer. The Service manual PDF from HP for my PC (found here - http://h10032.www1.hp.com/ctg/Manual/c03043778.pdf ) tells me only that my pc supports the HP 160 GB (665985-001) solid-state drive found here - http://partsurfer.hp.com/Search.aspx?SearchText=665985-001 and it does not look too promising, in my opinion.
What if I want something else? How do I know if it will be compatible or not? Are they all compatible? Would you recommend me any producer. Anything to stay away from or any specific producer of SSD that I should use for upgrading my HP Pavilion dv7-6b76eo?

My suggestion:
Clone existing HDD to new SSD (try Samsung, Crucial ...) then install new SSD on the primary slot, this will save a lot of hassles.
Format the old HDD, buy caddy & cable then install it on the second slot.

Dv7-2173cl memory 4gb to 8gb

So I have a dv7-2173cl laptop, which comes with 4 gb of ram I am wondering if there would be much of a performance increase, if memory increased to 8gb I am running win7 home premium 64 bit

Understandable! I am the same way with my PC. Personally, I wouldn't go and do it if you plan on doing picture editing while using the Media Center on your TV, you would probably won't notice a big difference in smoothness.

HP Probook 4520s Memory upgrade to 8GB (2x4GB) Corsair Unsuccessful and Failed

My notebook is HP Probook 4520s
with Windows Windows 8.1 (6.3) 64-bit (Build 9600)

When I installed the memory module onto the notebook, I basically couldn't go beyond the POST stage. That is the HP logo appears on the screen, and that's it.. that's it.. nothing beyond that stage.
When I went to the BIOS settings, the memory successfully read 81xxMB, this is basically 8GB of RAM.
I tried to reset BIOS settings, failed again.
I removed the 2x4GB modules, put back both original 1GB and 2GB modules -the ones that came with the notebook-, everything worked again.
What went wrong here..?
P.S. please do not reply with lame replies like "that's weird" "that's strange", I know it's weird and strange. I want specific and clear suggestions.

HP Pavilion p7-1414 memory upgrade issues

I just purchased a HP Pavilion p7-1414 desktop. This system has an AMD A8 processor and supports up to 32gb ram. I recently purchased a new 8GB stick of Kingston KHX16C10B1R/8 1600MHZ DDR3 NON-ECC HYPER X BLUE. This memory will only clock 1333MHZ no matter what slot I install it in. This machine has 4-memory expansion slots. The machine runs fine but the memory will not clock up to advertised speed.
Any input is appreciated. The memory in brand new. I also have 2 new 4MB sticks of Kingston ddr3 1600MHZ memory and they both clock fine @ 1600MHZ.

It seems likely that the HPSA isn't reading the information correctly.
If the BIOS shows the correct reading and passes the memory test, I would say that it's operating normally.

HP Pavilion s7720.uk memory upgrade

My parents own a HP Pavilion s7720.uk Desktop PC (opens in new)
Performance is suffering recently as it has become become loaded with software and gbs worth of photos and itunes music. they havent upgraded yet and I think upgrading the memory speed to freshen it up.
I believe that it currently features 1gb of 444mhz pc-4200 Hynix Memory. (Serial - Rx8-PC2-4200U-444-12-HYMP564U64CP8-C4-AB-C--0650--C)
The hp product page for the model states that PC2-4200 MB/sec is supported but I hope it will allow faster?
Ideally, I would like to install 2gb of superior crucial memory, but I am unsure of whether the motherboard will support the faster speed dimms. I already have understood 2gb is the maximum capacity but I hope somebody can tell me what the maximum memory speed it will accept, if that is, it is even an issue? I would hope maybe 667mhz 800mhz of the type PC2-5300 or PC2-6400?
I welcome any suggestions for alternative memory or different upgrades if this is not a particularly great idea. Note they already have an external hd

Pavilion dv7-4069wm Fingerprint upgrade

I used the digital persona fingerprint reader upgrade from HP, and now I can't get into my computer. I've used the fingerprint lock ever since I got the computer, but now it turns on and I need to either log in ("Log in not accepted") or scan my fingerprint ("Fingerprint not verified") to go any further. I tried to go to tech support, but my warranty expired less than a week ago, and I can't seem to find any help that doesn't cost a lot. There doesn't seem to be anybody at HP willing to hear that my computer was working just fine until I used the upgrade they sent me. Any ideas?

Changing memory cards in a Pavilion dv7-2273cl

Greetings:
I wanted to change the memory cards in my laptop (2 cards of 2GB each one), and the ones installed in it have a bus of 1066; but, here in the city where I live, I could get 4GB cards but with a bus of 1333 or 1600.
I would like to know if there would be any trouble or future problem if I put the 2 (4GB each) memory cards of 1333 or 1600 in my dv7 notebook; because some people told me I could have future problems due to the changing of bus (1066 to 1333/1600).

I think you are saying your have 2x2GB DDR-1066 (PC3-8500) memory modules installed.
These can be upgraded to 2x4GB with eitherDDR3-1333 PC3-10600 or DDR3-1066 PC3-8500 modules
per crucial.com dv7-2273cl memory upgrade, i.e.. Crucial does not recommend the DDR-1600 memory.
TBD if the DDR-1333 memory will perform at the 1333MHz speed or auto downclock to the (current) DDR3-1066 rate. Often depends on the MoBo chips and BIOS
Usual caveats apply:
There are variants of both DDR3-1333 and DDR3-1066 Wikipedia DDR3_SDRAM, choose wisely.
The crucial.com scanner can be helpful.
For best performance, install in matched pairs. Don't know if the MoBo is dual channel (assume not) - won't matter if installed as matched pair.
If running windows, you need a 64bit version of the OS to use > 3 or 3.5GB of RAM

No. Your laptop uses PC3L....low voltage 1.35 volts and both the ones you have asked about clearly say 1.5 volt. Just in general there is no benefit to be gained from "gaming" or "performance" memory on consumer laptops. The systems are designed to run at conservative settings consistent with mass distribution.
Your laptop will accept 16 gigs of RAM but I would suggest going to crucial.com and searching for memory guaranteed compatible with your laptop. You are better off with 2 identical sticks of memory because you will then have "dual channel" mode which is a bit faster.

Is it possible to upgrade/add a graphics card to a Pavilion dv7-7000 laptop?

I've been doing a lot of research lately, to mostly no avail, about whether or not my HP Pavilion dv7-7025dx laptop can have a dedicated GPU added to it, as currently it only has the integrated Intel HD 4000 Mobile graphics card.
Mostly I've come across the unfortunate agreement that most laptops cannot have their graphics cards upgraded/swapped out, since the graphics card is soldered on to the motherboard. However, after talking to an HP "support representative", they said they believed it was possible to add a graphics card, as long as it is compatible with the HM77 45W UMA Motherboard my computer has.
Furthermore, after finding the maitenence and service manual online for my computer ( http://h10032.www1.hp.com/ctg/Manual/c03221579.pdf ) it says that it could have come with switchable graphics, specifically the Nvidia Geforce 630M or 650M.
So I am wondering, is it really at all possible to add a dedicated graphics card, either by having switchable graphics or something else? Or am I stuck with the integrated Intel HD graphics?
If I can upgrade/add a new card, where would I be able to find/buy a compatible one, and would I be able to install it myself or would I need to go to a local computer repair?
My laptop is the HP Pavilion dv7-7025dx Entertainment Notebook.
It has an Intel Core i7- 3610QM CPU @ 2.30 GHz, 8GB memory, 750GB hard drive (5400 rpm).
I am currently running Windows 7 Home Premium SP1 (64-bit).

You can't add a dedicated graphics card to the system like this. The vga is soldered to the board so no way you can just plug it in like on a desktop. However, you can buy a new motherboard with the dedicated graphics card on it. It also requires a new heat sink.

You need a 682040-001 board plus 682061-001 heat sink to have a dedicated graphics card on your laptop. Have a look on ebay for the part numbers.

Hp pavilion dv7-6157cl upgrade questions

I currently own an hp pavilion dv7-6157cl and want to upgrade my memory to 8gb and the HD to at least 1 TB. I figure I will do it when I tear my laptop appart to replace the cooling fan ( strange though - I have a Compaq (which is supposedly a lower end of the HP line but it is over 3 years older and the fan is still going strong and an even a much older and lower end Gateway with no fan problems - go figure!). I upgraded my Compaq wireless card from a G to an N and learned that HP/Compaq had white lists for certain parts that would only allow certain manufactures parts to be used. Is this true also for memory and hard drives?
As far as the memory goes - what are the specs (I know they are DDR3) but what is the speed specs of the memory used. Being that it is 6 GB I presume there is a 4 and 2 GB stick installed but I have also gone by the standard that it is faster to have both memory sticks the same capacity and speed. I also presume the extra memory would improve graphics also as the graphics share the sytem memory.
I also am going to be replacing the 640 GB HD with at least a 1 TB drive - is there a good program to clone the internal drive to use a bigger one as a direct replacement without having to reinstall everything. The cloning process would be simplified as currently buying 2.5 inch external USB 3.0 drives is cheaper than buying barebones drives (a 2.5" 1 TB Seagate drive can . I presume if I got a 2 TB external I would have to partition it into 2 1 TB partions but the way the 2 TB 2.5" external drives it would be worth the cost.
Finally - besides the above questions are there certain makes for memory and HD's that are in the "whitelist" that can only be used. Any and all info would be appreciated.

You've got many questions, please allow me to make some suggestions (not in order):
1. 1TB is the sweet point now in term of price/performance and no need to muck around due to some limitations. Many HSSD's (Hybrid SSD) now are very good. HP uses few suppliers and many laptops use Toshiba HDD's, you may want to play safe by using this brand.
2. For memory: your machine support 8Gb max as mentioned in its specs. From 6Gb to 8Gb you can't see or feel the difference but if you wish, keep the existing 4Gb and buy a SAME specs/brand 4Gb stick to replace the 2Gb stick. The video card on your machine can take "Up to 3061MB" max this will give you plenty of RAM.
3. Cloning existing HDD to new HDD is the best approach if you won't need to change anything (by the way, I use this many times to swap my HDD's around my test machines). Some vendors supply tool for you (or you can download from their sites) to clone. There are few good cloning software around:

Hp Pavilion dv7 4100 cto Ram upgrade

Hi. I have a Hp pavilion dv7 4100 cto running on windows 7 64 bit. It has 2 slots of 2 GB memory each. i currently have 2 gb of ram left since another 2 gb were broken. I would like to upgrade to 8 gb ( 4gb each slot ). This is my Ram specification found on Hp memory selector :
