HP Pavilion dv7-3165dx heats up and shut's down

My HP Pavilion dv7-3165dx heats up and shut's down/ locks up,  It does seem Hot so I'm assuming it's due to heat, or heat related. The Vent's are not blocked and no dust.. This could happen within the first 5 minutes of powering up. I swapped out the hard drive just to be sure it wasn't  the Hard drive.  any suggestion's or idea's with this brief explanation...

You can chat online with a HP Specialist about your issue and details if your eligible to replace your laptop.

  • Pavilion dv7-3165dx will not boot up

This pavilion dv7-3165dx has worked flawlessly for 8 years. Now when I turn it on, the lights come on and the fan runs, but nothing loads up, not Windows, not BIOS, nothing. The screen stays blank. I have cycled the power several times with the same result. I checked the BIOS battery, and it is good: 3.25 volts.

    Hi there @Terry49,
Welcome to the HP Support Forums! It is a great place to find the help you need, both from other users, HP experts and other support personnel.
I understand that your notebook is no longer starting up properly, and I am happy to help with this.
I would start out with this process, and see if there is any change. It is possible that just the hard reset is required.
Computer Does not Start (Windows 7, Vista, XP)
Also check your power adapter, and if you have another one, try it out, and also try a different wall outlet.
    I hope this helps.

Device not working is : hp DVDWBD TS-LB23L ATA Device
Whirrrs like reading disc...even gets the disc icon on windows.
Have scoured these boards and tried everal of the solutions.....
    1.  tried uninstalling and reinstalling Driver as described on these boards... didnt work
    2. tried MATS on microsoft website....didnt work
    http://support.microsoft.com/mats/cd_dvd_drive_problems/
    3.  Tried the Revo uninstaller attempt .... didnt work
    4. tried the CC Cleaner attempt ... didnt work
    5. Tried the ATA channel delete ... didnt work
    6. tried the BIOS update  here : HP Mediasmart DVD failure - HP Support Forum
as additional clarification..... no physical damage to computer....Discs being used are all functional Blu or CD or DVD.
HP Mediasmart DVD is still not working.
NO installation of new programs prior to this going on.
My same fire wall program, anti-,malware has been on this computer since I purchased it 7 months ago.
    No software changes in system.
I do not use the Comodo firewall system either.
    Thank you

Have you tried installing a trial Blu-ray player. Don't use one from Cyberlink as it's too close to Media Smart DVD.
     Use Arc Soft
      http://www.arcsoft.com/estore/software_title.asp?ProductCode=TMT5P&gclid=COXEpJ6CqqcCFQEKbAodpQdSCw
----Will give that a whirl when I return home.
Have you tried the obvious and picked a Windows restore point to where it was working ?  -------Windows 7, in that particular machine isn't letting me dial back for an earlier restore point..... it isn't even letting me see dates....Believe me I would have been happy to dial back a week or two.  Not sure why, Havent been able to dig in that direction....was trying to be careful about not digging a deeper hole before moving all important work files and stuff to a different machine before toying with windows deeper.
Maybe the drive itself has failed, do you you have another HP laptop that you can try it in ?-----have several HPs...might try that soon.
Check "Autoplay" in the control panel.----have done the autoplay fixes that have been proposed in other chains of similar problems....no avail.
I will keep throwing ideas at you no matter how simplistic they may seem. I find that it starts people thinking in another direction.     --------Believe me, I appreciate it, just as long as it doesn't devolve into .....Is the machine plugged in?
Have you tried burning a DVD with it ?   Not yet, that is a good idea.
Try installing Image Burn and  see if the drive will create ISO files with a Blu-ray disk. You will get a warning that Image Burn can't do this, but continue and let it dead the whole disc. Let me know if that works and I will give you the software to play the movie from the ISO files.
     http://www.imgburn.com/index.php?act=download
Use mirror 8 provided by Image Burn.
What version of Media Smart DVD are you running ?  Was using the most recent release......then uninstalled it and went back a few versions... to one that was linked to in another similar thread.
    Thanks.

  • Quicklaunge buttons on my HP Pavilion dv7-2260ed not working and always red

The quicklaungebuttons (Mute, Volume, cd options and wireless) on my HP Pavilion dv7-2260ed stopped working and are always red.  This happend 3 weeks ago. I runned the HP assistent but no errors were found. Any help is welcome

Hi, I have more or less exactly the same problem.
I own a pavilion dv7 1090eb, which originally had Vista 32bit on it, but I updated to Windows 7 32bit more than a year ago,
not long after 7 was released. Ever since that update (or a few days after, I don't really remember) I've been having problems with the quick launch buttons.
For over a year it was just my mute button that was always orange. I could still mute my sound, but when not muted, it sounded like it was really filtered, all the low and the high were gone, only low mid sounds remained.
My jack exits, both of them, however, still work fine, and I have good audio through external speakers, so I kind of solved that.
But still, the laptop itself has great sound, so I should be able to get that without having to carry around external speakers wherever I go.
Oh and I used to have the same problem with Vista from time to time, but after rebooting it would just go back to normal.
But now just today, I left my laptop on for about 2 hours for some image rendering while I was away, and I switched the wifi off, which I usually do when I leave my laptop unattended. But when I came back, it wouldn't turn back on again, and none of the quick launch buttons worked anymore.
I tried reinstalling all drivers after I did some troubleshooting options which didn't work.
Turned it off and on again a couple of times.
Then found this thread and installed the above link, rebooted, still doesn't work.
What now? What can I do to resolve this problem?
I really hope I can get a solution for this.

  • NC6230 heats up and shuts down quickly

If anyone can please help so I dont spend anymore money on this.LOL  I have a NC6230 that would overheat and shut down after half a minute of so.  I went on EBAY and purchased two other boards and I have the same issue.  Thinking I couldn't have 2 bad boards with the save issue I purchased a curcuit board.  Same issue.  I tried another known good processor with the same results.  I tried swapping memory with no success.  All of these tests were done with the power supply for power and no hard drive or OS.  I then powered it on with the battery only and it stayed running.  I powered it off and restarted with a external keyboard to check the BIOS and it overheated and shut off in 30 seconds.  No clue what else to try.  Is there a defect in the board which provides too much power to the board causing the shutdown?  Is this a defect in this board over time?
    Thanks for any help

Could be that the coolant is not working correctly.
A typical heat pipe consists of a sealed pipe or tube made of a material with high thermal conductivity such as copper or aluminium at both hot and cold ends. A vacuum pump is used to remove all air from the empty heat pipe, and then the pipe is filled with a fraction of a percent by volume of working fluid (or coolant) chosen to match the operating temperature. Examples of such fluids include water, ethanol, acetone, sodium, or mercury.
You can read the hole article at http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Heat_pipe .

  • HP Pavilion dv7 doesn't start and I can't install operating system

    Product: HP Pavilion dv7-1125eo
    p/n: NA034EA#UUW
I had Windows 8.1 Pro and I did a virus scan with Malwarebytes-program but I think that it completed before this and didn't find anything. I were also using Youtube and suddenly my computer turned off and it didn't find my hard disk anymore.
    I got errors like:
    03F0
    hard disk not exist
    boot device not found 3F0
no bootable device--insert boot disk and press any key
Diagnostic log shows that I have had that 03F0 and also 0601 error before, but somehow I made my computer to work again. In BIOS it didn't show that there is hard disk, can't test it, but it was an option in boot order, maybe it is always there I don't know.
I tried a trick that going to BIOS five times and always save changes and exit. That kind of worked and I were able to use Windows like 15 min but then computer turned off.
    Windows repairing things:
Windows Automatic repair -> The drive where Windows is installed is locked. Unlock the drive and try again.
Startup repair -> Startup repair couldn't repair your PC.
I used live Linux Mint from my USB stick and it worked good. I formatted my USB stick and tried to reinstall Windows but if I remember correctly it didn't recognize my hard drive.
I thought that maybe my hard disk is broken and I took my Fujitsu Siemens Storagebird Serial ATA WD 250GB external hard drive out of its case and put it inside my laptop. It fitted there well so I tried to install windows into that. First it didn't recognize that hard drive either but when I tried many times and changed it inside laptop between slot 1 and 2
it finally showed in Windows installation screen. Installing always stopped at 16 or 19% and formatting didn't help.
I also formatted my USB stick and made it installation media again but same thing.
Then I thought that maybe I have wrong Windows 8 Pro product key, an upgrade only so I tried to install Windows Vista because it were a factory installed OS. It either didn't recognize my hard drive in Windows installing screen, but this one can be tested in BIOS.
Taking CMOS battery out for hours and trying with only one memory or both hard disks didn't work.
Do I need to install some drivers from DVD during the Windows installation or is the hard disk connections broken or what is the problem? Can't I repair it by myself?
I'm tired of trying these magic tricks so I really hope that someone can help me. Otherwise I need to buy a new laptop or use it with my USB stick and its live Linux ;( Also battery is dead so it doesn't exist anymore and fan makes noises sometimes and computer gets hot. I'm getting amused when trying to fix it even though almost nothing doesn't work anymore but it's hard to let go of it because I have repaired it so many times and even though it's old it's been working the last year well before this
I didn't know where to post this because I don't know what the real problem is.

    Hey @mnbvc ,
    Welcome to the HP Forums!
I see you're unable to install Windows on another HDD after experiencing an HDD failure.
The hard drive not found error would indicate the drive has failed. Not being able to test the drive confirms this.
-Source: Resolve Boot Device not Found Error Message.
The upgrade key you use only applies to the Windows Upgrade ISO and will not allow a fresh install of the operating system if it has nothing to build on, so you are correct in trying the Vista install. When you attempt to install VIsta are you using the HP Recovery Media or are you using the Windows Vista ISO? I would assume the drive that was installed in your notebook was larger than 250GB and would explain why an HP Recovery would fail during formatting but would not explain why the install failed if it was a licensed Windows ISO.
Have you tried installing Linux onto the HDD instead of using a USB boot? This will help you test the validity of the HDD.
You can try downloading a version of Windows 8.1 and skip the license key to activate the 30 day trial. (Search Google for Windows 8.1 Pro ISO downloads). Once installed activate Windows using the license key you purchased for an upgrade which theoretically should work.
Let me know if that helps or if installing Linux to the HDD fails as well.

  • My laptop heats up and shuts down

I bought my laptop in US and am using the same adapter. Maybe this is the reason, but I'm seriosly worried as my laptop after an hour of use becomes very hot and shuts down. I don't know what the problem really is, but lately, it seems to shut down even quickly.
I thought the fans might not be working, but they were when I looked at them. It's happened from the brand new, and I've used it like that for six months now. But since the problem's become worst, I thought of asking for help here. Is there anything I can do?
    Thank you.

    HI Shalav,
Your notebook will most likely be using a 'universal' mains adapter so it will work perfectly well in the UK as well as the US.
Your problem is most likely to be a build up of dust in the CPU heat-sink which will reduce its effectiveness to the point where the build up of heat causes the thermal protection circuitry to opertae and shut off power.
Clean out any accumulation of dust and also make sure that there is sufficient air able to circulate through the cooling system. Leave plenty of spoace around and under your notebook.
    regards,

All of what you wrote - I understand that. But understand and you - the replacement of the processor is required because performance lacking. For a new book i haven't  money. You are employee of HP and really can help asking the question to someone of your colleagues who will know exactly whether to run the new AMD processors in my notebook. All my notebooks have been made HP I always helped the company - buying its products, help you and me now. I'm not asking for much - just a concrete answer - will work or not?
No!! That is where you are wrong. I am not an HP employee.
Very few of us here in the forums are HP Employees. Those that are, with very few exceptions, are here volunteering their own time to help owners of HP products. This is a peer to peer forum where owners of HP products share their time and expertise helping others who need help. We are here to help. We are helping  as volunteers.
There is no concrete answer on this. Sometimes an upgrade to an unsupported CPU will work, but most often it will fail.  Read my previous posts. The risk of whatever currency you use in your country to purchase the new CPU is yours, not mine nor HP's.
Here is a solid answer for you...Use a CPU that is in the list in the Maintenence & Service Guide and your upgrade success chance will go up dramatically.  I cannot say your upgrade success will be guaranteed because there is always the chance that you may break something during assembly/disassembly or be unaware of a critical assembly/disassembly procedure and inadvertently destroy your new CPU.
If you want a high performance CPU and chipset in a laptop then choose well when making a laptop purchase. Laptop/notebooks are actually not meant to be upgraded.

    Hi,
Over the past year I have had my laptop computer, a Pavilion g7 Windows 8, and it has been fine for about 5 months, but after that it started to overheat at times and give me the link www.hp.com/go/techcenter/startup to help. Hi  AG12345,
Thank you for visiting the HP Support Forums and Welcome. I have read your thread on your HP Pavilion g7 Notebook and overheating and shutting down. Here is a link to overheating as this might be the cause of the shutting down. If the Notebook has dust on the fans it could be overheating. If that does not help at the end of this document it shows you to do a hardware test. The final thing you should try is to update the BIOS.
    Hope this helps.

    Hi,
Download the latest installer for HP QuickLaunch Buttons on the link below and save this to your Desktop.
    ftp://ftp.hp.com/pub/softpaq/sp46001-46500/sp46168.exe
From the Start Menu, open the Control Panel and then open Programs and Features.  Find the entry for HP QuickLaunch Buttons and uninstall this.  When complete, shut the notebook down, remove the AC Adapter, remove the battery and then hold down the Power button for a good 30 seconds.  Replace the battery, plug in the AC Adapter and start the notebook.  When windows has loaded, right click the installer you placed on your Desktop and select 'Run as Administrator'.  When the installation has completed, reboot the notebook.

  • Firefox 3.6.10 doesn't shut down. Keeps running using 100% of my CPU so I can't play a game. etc., unless I use TUT to find it and shut it down.

After I shut Firefox down, when I try to re-open it (in the same session) I get message "Firefox is already running but is not responding. To open a new window, you must first close the existing Firefox process or restart the system." So I would restart the computer, and it was ok until I shut down again. Finally I used TUT to see what was running in my programs and found that Firefox WAS still running, even though no obvious pages were open on toolbar, etc. Now I use TUT to shut it down instead of restarting, but it's still a nuisance. Should I reinstall Firefox?
