HP Pavilion dv7-4020sa Cooling Fan - Noisy

Hi,
I have had my laptop for two years or so now, and the fan has become noisy sometimes. If I tap the laptop thw noise stops for a while, I suspect a bearing. I used have the same issue with my old Toshiba Qosmio laptop, and replaced the two cooling fans my self on 3 occasions without any hitch.
I know very little about my HP laptop. How easy is it to replace the fan myself. The part number of the fan. Is there a How TO guide on opening up and replacing etc. Where to get and how much the fan costs.
Any help/advice would be much appreciated.

Here is the support page for your model, you will fins a service manual in the manuals section, it will have instructions and part numbers.

  • Pavilion dv7 - heating and fan problems, hinge broken - DO NOT PURCHASE THIS JUNK!!!

This message is targetted towards people looking to purchase an HP Pavilion dv7 series of notebooks. Hopefully they are scanning these boards prior to purchase, something I (very) regretfully did not do.
    My system: Intel i7 Q720 @ 1.60GHz, 8GB, ATI mobility radeon HD5650 1GB, Windows 7 home premium 64 bit.
Almost immediately, there were severe overheating problems. Even under normal use (1- 4% CPU, Word, Excel etc.) it became too hot on the left side to keep on my lap. My kids actually burned their hands on that part. I once used it on a table with a vinyl tablecloth. It actually melted the vinyl!
Running any CPU/GPU intensive software causes a shutdown due to overheating, a real nuiscance with playing games or watching video in HD. Just as a test, I ran one computationally intensive program overnight while I kept the machine in my freezer. Even then, it overheated and shutdown! (I have not overclocked; just running my software on the hardware as purchased).
Even in normal use, the fan runs very high, and is very noisy. It is so noisy that I cannot leave it on in my bedroom.
Finally, because of the positioning of the vent, I am certain that the intense heat weakens the left hinge. I am very careful with how I open lids, always with both hands on the lid. Within two months, the left hinge cracked. I argued extensively with HP, but they insisted that it was my fault, and I was charged for the fix.
I'm wondering whether the designers ever turned on (let alone stress tested) these units prior to selling this piece of !@#$.
Added bonus: within 4 months, the hard drive failed, though I can't pin that on HP. While the drive was getting replaced, I went out and bought an Acer. It had better specs than the HP, was cheaper, lighter, and even with the CPU at close to 100 percent, the heat is hardly noticable, and the fan is barely audible.
I bought HP because most of the scientific instruments in our labs is manufactured by HP, and it is truly high quality , high precision equipement, some of it running for over 25 years problem free. From that, I really trusted the HP name, I trusted that their PC division would have equal quality and standards. !#$% was I wrong! I'm glad they're getting out of the PC business.
The only reason I'm keeping this junk is because I took the extended warranty at the store, and under it, after three major repairs, they will get me a new notebook of equal or greater value. I can't wait for that inevitable third breakdown!

The dv 7 eg 4012  is the biggest disapointment:
the hinge brakes, it has an overheating problem!!!
Be prepared to replace it after 12 months or pay the bill for the repairs, hundreds of dollars.
I purchased the laptop directly from the hp online store about a year and a half ago.
First of all I had to install the latest drivers because hp is not making sure it comes with up to date drivers.
To find out what the problem was I had to contact the costumer service about 6 times.
After about 12 months the laptop startet splitting at the left hinge.  The HP Costumer Service looked at the photos and told me this, Quote:  "We have received the attachment of broken hinges and find it is an user damage hence, the service of the Notebook would be done on chargeable basis."
Before you want to buy a hp laptop, please type into google:  broken hinge hp laptop
And you will see hundreds of posts of disappointed costumers.
Even class action lawsuit have been taken out against them.
For me, this was the last time that I invested about a 1000 Euros( bought it in Europe) in a product which needs to be replaced after a year and a half.
Please stay away from this product,
except you have plenty of time and money to keep this machine alive.

Well it is either blocked, has a bad BIOS setting or the fan is dead and needs to be replaced. Try sticking a bent-out paperclip in the grille to hold the blades and blast some strong compressed air in there. Also try a hard reset....remove battery and AC charger and hold down power 30 seconds then plug in and try again. Also go into BIOS (F10) and set BIOS to default settings. If that does not work it has to be disassembled and the fan replaced.

  • HP Pavilion dv7 Notebook PC faulty cooling fan needs replacement.

My cooling fan recently started becoming very loud on it's lowest speeds and I suspect I will need to replace it soon before it goes out completely. My question is where can I find replacement cooling fans for this product? The problem is I do not know the exact cooling fan I need to replace it and I was hoping someone would be able to point me in the right direction.

  • System Fan (90B) Error / HP Pavilion dv7-4060us

Hi. I have a Pavilion dv7-4060us notebook, Windows 7 Home Premium, 64-bit. I had an overheating problem not too long ago that caused my notebook to shut down on it's own. I bought a cooling pad to help with the overheating, which helped. But now, everytime I start up, it gives me a black screen reading "Operating System has found that a cooling fan has stopped working" or something similar. The error code was "System Fan (90B)." How do I get rid of this error message? Post back here or reach my email at [email protected] Thanks.

This PreBoot Diagnostics that is indicating there is an issue with system fan. It would be a case of System Fan not running or running at slower speed than it should...
I would suggest, try doing power drain, by disconecting AC adapter, removing battery and pressing the power button for few secs... if that always you to boot to the OS, that Update the BIOS if not than I would suggest contacting HP Tech Support for getting your unit serviced...

  • Cooling pad for HP Dv7 4020sa (17'')

    Hey everyone,
What cooling pad would you recommend to buy for a HP Dv7 4020sa (17'') for endlessly long gaming sessions?
    Thanks,
    J

    I am using this one:
    http://www.staples.com/Targus-Chill-Mat-XC-for-Laptops/product_857849?cmArea=SEARCH
It plugs into a USB port and has 4 additional USB ports and 2 fans. It's pretty big and should fit your 17". You can get it at any of the local stores like Staples, Office Depot, Best Buy, etc.
The Targus cools my laptop by a few degrees but I actually got better results by just propping up the back of the laptop with a sturdy book. And with the Targus blowing air at my laptop the vents get dusty more often so I clean out the vents with compressed air every two weeks or so.

  • HP DV7 4020sa Fan Noise - Cleaned and still making noise

    Hi.
    I need help with my laptop. It's a DV7 4020sa.
Ever since I purchased the laptop (used) the fan has made a horrible whining sound. I decided to fix it today so dissambled the laptop and gave the fan a good clean, and also put some wd40 on the fan spindle.
Unfotunately after reassembling, the fan still makes the noise. It strange because if i pull the screen/lid slightly towards me it stops the noise, and also if I apply pressure on the underside on the base where the fan is located.
Should I buy a new/refurbished fan to replace it or is there some fix i can apply myself?
    Thanks in advance

Is there a fix for the noisy keys on a HP Pavilion dv7 6163 US? Especially around the "a" key

I have the same problem, and this did NOT fix the issue!
Edit:  I would give you negative kudos if I could.  I have seen hp reps post this as a solution way too many times.  THIS DEFINITIVELY DOES NOT FIX THE ISSUE!

  • The cooling fan is strangely noisy

Hi, I'm using dv6-6023tx laptop for 1 year. Its cooling fan was ok since when i purchased it, but it suddenly became so noisy with annoying spinning sounds from the last few days. I don't know why it happened. I didn't touch or change any hardware and software conditions, I was just using it as normal. I guess it happened because of dust or something like that but I'm not sure.
    What should I do?

first step is to clean it with a can of compressed air by blowing it out in reverse of flow direction. holding fan blade still with a metal pin or similar through grill vents is good idea.
After cleaning check fan is running & air flow seems good.
If fan noise still noisy is it due to worn bearing (more mechanical noise) or because fan running faster & longer due to notebook actually being hotter.
It is posible you have processes stressing the computer & it is actually running hot & the fan is just working hard.
Review all processes & CPU use & also monitor actual temps with software like HWinfo

  • Lap top pavilion dv 7 shutting down Error 908 cooling fan not working

Since two days my HP pavilion dv 7 lap top has been heating up. I started getting warning notice error 908. One of the cooling fans apparnetly is not working properly and the system is shutting down.

If the operation has slowed you might also want to check the hard drive. Go back into the BIOS and look for the hard drive diagnostic test and run it. If the laptop came with Windows 8 you can also go into the "enhanced" diagnostics which is easier to use, with mouse support and such. Tap F2 as you power up instead of F10. You can run a whole bunch of diagnostics in there like memory and hard drive and DVD drive.  Let us know the results.

  • How to Replace cooling fan HP Pavilion g7-1139

Need information on how to replace the cooling fan on my Pavilion g7-1139 series Laptop please .
    This question was solved.

    Hi, Rick:
It appears that the manual for the g7-1300 series would also pertain to yours...same hardware specs...
    http://h10025.www1.hp.com/ewfrf/wc/manualCategory?cc=us&dlc=en&lc=en&product=5214430&
There is no manual linked to your notebook's support page, and the one for the g7-1139 is for older hardware (1st generation core processors).

  • HP Pavilion DV7-3160US Fan issues

I woke up and turned on my HP Pavilion DV7-3160US which is less than 3 months old and it sounds as if the fan is loose and makes an awkward and annoying sound that stops after a few minutes  but anytime I move the laptop the sound returns while in movement.
Any ideas or suggestions? Also how long does HP normally take to fix computers? I'd hate to be without my computer for a while.
    Thanks.

  • HP Pavilion dv7-6b32us Fan Buzzes when running fast

I have an HP Pavilion dv7-6b32us and within the past few months my laptop heats up pretty easy and whenever the fan starts running really fast it will buzz and it vibrates enough that I can feel it a bit in the top left area of the laptop, the only way it stops is if I tap that area pretty hard. I'm assuming this means the bearings or something on the fan are shot, and it needs to be replaced. I've tried to clean the fan area the best I can (though there's never a lot of dust inside) but if I remember from the last time I took it apart, I can't get to it very easily without removing the motherboard, so i have to clean the fan with the cover on. Is there a way to fix this or if not, where can I get a replacement fan?

    Hi,
Have a look at the service guide.

Your laptop should have a shared graphics Intel 3000 so pick the heat sink/fan assembly for the Intel UMA memory:
