- hard power reset: same issue
- took out RAM: no beeping, ok motherboard issue
- replaced motherboard: same issue, crap
- returned motherboard (glad there a return policy)
- replace CPU: same issue, super crap
i'm out of ideas...
any input would be greatly appreciated.
Zac

OK, I installed a new CPU and fan, cleaned it all up, used artic silver, and also cleared the CMOS.  Installed the latest bios.  I got windows to boot, and run well.  However the keyboard and touch pad didn't work regardless of what was tried (installed new drivers, windows driver, uninstalled, dos command prompts yada yada....I did it all still nothing) The ext mouse/keyboard work fine.  It's probably a hardware issue, as the laptop keyboard/mouse doesn't even work in F2 diagnoistics mode.  Everything has been disassembled and reassembled multiple times, new keyboard installed, contacts cleaned and positioned properly, etc.
The laptop keyboard does work in the BIOS settings scren, so perhaps it's not a hardware issue?
Anyways, I decided to run system recovery restoring it to out of the box state with no saving of any prevous files of any kind. At about 30% the system shuts down once the fan starts spinning fast (I suspect the CPU is getting too hot even though the laptop is raised and nothing blocking the fan exhaust holes)  I tried to do a recovery twice, and still it failed.
Could I install a new heat sink, new mobo, and mess around with this until it all works?  Sure.  Could I repartition the hard drive so that only windows is installed an all the HP junk removed for easier faster use?  Sure!
But why should I when I can just sell it as is and be done with HP.  I bought this used for $300 and it worked for a good year without issues.  I'll recoupe my losses selling it for $200 and be done with HP.

  • Dv7-4173 no boot, blinking caps lock

I have an HP DV7-4173us, running Windows 7 pro 64 bit.
Up to date, hardware is stock, very few problems in the year I've had it.
It was running well up until yesterday, when I pushed the power button to wake it up from hibernate mode.
Fans came on, caps light flashed once, then everything went queit. The caps lock light blinks once per second, and the f12 light is Amber. No other signs of life.
I did the power reset (remove battery, discharge by holding power button, wait, ac power only) and nothing changed. I removed, checked, and reseated the ram, wifi, and all drive connections. No change.
I suspect the cpu needs to be reseated; before I do surgery, does anyone here have any ideas?

I've been having the same problem with my laptop not coming out of hibernation. I used to periodically get it to work by trying various hard re-boots/re-sets, but it's been weeks of trying now with no luck. I even purchased a new battery since my original one held no charge on it's own. The new battery didn't help at all. Hoping someone has something to help!

  • Pavilion Dv5-1009el - Black screen and blink caps lock and block scorr

    Hi,
I just replaced the motherboard of my pavilion that reported an error as object. The purchased motherboard is new and hp original.
After having changed, I turn on the pc and work fine, i see the hp logo and enter to bios, after I turned off the pc without starting windows.
I inserted the battery and powered on the pc and returns to the old error, the LED of caps lock and block Lock blinks...
So I tried to update the bios from USB using winkey + B. The computer emits two beeps but does not read from any USB port and the LEDs go out for a while and then blink again.
    What can I do?
    Greetings,
    Enzo.

    Hi @shmurray,
Welcome to the HP Support Forums!
I understand you are getting a blink pattern on the Caps lock LED, when you turn on the notebook. I am happy to help you with this.
I am including the page on the error codes for your reference: Blank Screen LED Error Codes
From that document the pattern you are getting indicates a memory problem. You said that you have tested the memory. What exactly did you try?
The document suggests reseating the RAM or trying a new set of RAM and then restarting the notebook. If you are still getting a memory problem after trying both of those things, ie a 3 blink code again, then it would likely suggest that there is a problem with the motherboard itself, either with the memory slot or one of the controllers related to memory.
In that case I would suggest contacting the technical phone support number at 800-474-6836. If you live outside the US/Canada Region, please click the link below to get the support number for your region.

If however reseating the memory or replacing it leads to a different error code or message please let me know, Although in that case the following may be helpful if you still have a blank screen.

  • Blinking Caps Lock and Num Lock Keys Lit after spilling water Macbook Pro.

What does it mean when the caps lock and Num lock key blink, after spilling liquid on a Macbook Pro? Does this mean that liquid is still present? Also, the white light by the latch was blinking. What does this all mean?

    Possible liquid damage.
Immediately disconnect all peripherals, power cord & remove the battery. Turn the computer over with the lid partly open and the hinge facing upward to let the liquid drain. Do not flop it over and lay it flat - you want to separate it from the moisture. Place paper or cloth towels under the machine to sop up the mess.
After the computer disgorges whatever you spilled on it, don't turn it on for 72 hours or longer. You want to computer to dry out completely before turning it on again.
Some users here swear by hairdryers. Blow drying the innards may bake whatever was in the liquid onto delicate computer components. Better to let the computer air dry.
Use plain tepid water to clean out the computer. If you spilled iced beverage more than likely this ice fried the hot motherboard.
Sugary, acidic or milky drinks will almost always cause problems later on as the residue starts slowly corroding the computer innards.
Swab down any sticky parts with distilled water or denatured alcohol.
If none of the above works, you will need to take the computer to a repair shop. Apple Care does not cover liquid or food damage. Believe me, they can tell. So the old "my computer stopped working" line is not going to work.

  • Hp pavilion dv7-4171us not booting. blinking lights

Hi, I'm unsure as to whether I'm posting this in the correct section. My problem is the following: My computer doesn't turn on. (It was working fine last night.) I can hear the cooler, but nothing else. The caps lock blinks once, and F12 is on all the time. I read that that particular way of blinking means "CPU not functional", but I have no clue as to what to do with that information.  I checked on the forum, and though I found the same problem, it was a different PC and the problem was not solved. I would like some help, and instructions on what to do. Thanks.Sol

Maybe... it depends on exactly why the drive has failed and how far gone it is.
You may be able to find an adapter that plugs into the sata hard drive and into a USB port on your laptop. Maybe TigerDirect.com or Ebay? Once you have the new hard drive installed and the operating system back in place, you can plug it in and try to access the drive through Windows Explorer.
If this doesn't work, and depending on how badly you need the files, you can download something like Hiren's Boot CD which has a number of tools in it that may allow you to access the data, but that may require a significant amount time and effort to understand and use the tools properly.

  • Compaq CQ58 blinking caps lock

    Hi all,
I have a compaq CQ58 which has just been restored to factory settings and everything seems to be working fine.
However, my caps lock keeps blinking 3 every second and then a break of about 2 maybe 4 seconds.
I can't find reference any details regarding this. All I could find is blinking caps lock and booting issues. This does not apply to me as laptops works as normal.
Not too sure but this might be related. I have removed the screen due to being smashed and laptop carrently runs on external screen while I'm waiting for a new screen.
    Could someone advice please.
    Thanks a lot.

    Hi lokyt,
I see that your Compaq has a blinking Caps Lock light. Unfortunately, this blink code is an indication of a hardware issue. According to this HP document Computer Does Not Turn On and the LEDs Blink three blinks mean that it is a memory failure.
You can try removing and then reseating the memory. Here is the Maintenance and Service Guide for your model on page 36 you will find instructions on how to remove the memory. You will also find replacement part numbers if you need to replace the memory.

  • Pavilion DV5 1111ea CAPS lock and NUM lock continuously blinking

I recently upgraded my dv5 pavilion 1111ea to windows 8.1
Due to an issue with the OS, it doesn't resume from Hibernation, as described here.
I held down the power button until the laptop swithched off.
Once I tried to put it on again, it couldn't get to the BIOS screen, the CAPS lock AND NUM/SCROLL lock LEDs were blinking continuously, once every 3 seconds.
    No disk activity at all.
I checked HP Notebook PCs - Blank Screen LED Error Codes but non corresponded to continuous blinking.
I have a spare CPU which I removed from a discarded dv5, the CPU is exactly the same model with mine (AMD Turion x2 RM-72).
I've troubleshooted by removing both RAMs and testing each individually in different ports, yet no solution.
I'm suspecting the CPU because about a year after purchasing the PC, it began to overheat and hibernate automatically to prevent the CPU from burning. I had to underclock the CPU so, for over three and half year now, I've been running at 50% CPU speed. In total the laptop is 4.5 years old already.
Please I need suggestions as to what to do. I don't have the required tools to replace the cpu myself.
    Thanks.

I took my PC to a repairer and he claimed to have replaced the CPU with an AMD Sempron from his collection of scrap laptop CPUs.
After about 3 months, the same problem has recurred.
I opened it up, only to find my former CPU model inside!
Whether the repairer had a spare Turion, or he only performed a trick to make my original CPU to work (and billed me for a replacement), I can't say for sure.
Now I've purchased another CPU from eBay.
Fixed it and...... got dissapointed again.
Still blinking the CPU error code.
From other posts I've come across here, I think HP/AMD combo is to blame for all these.

  • HP Pavilion tx2500 - Caps Lock and Num Lock lights blink once

I turn on my HP Pavilion tx2500 and I hear the fan spinning but nothing else happens.  The lights next to the Caps Lock and above the Num Lock keys blink (a repeating single blink).  According to some HP technical support documents I found online, the repeating single blink indicates a CPU problem.  My laptop is out of warranty and the $400 to send it to HP to have it fixed is practically the same price I paid for the laptop 2 years ago.
Do the blinking lights mean the CPU is fried?  And is there anything I can do to fix the laptop?
    Thanks,
    -Jeff

I have the same problem. I called HP they said the same thing. But, I am BIOS engineer myself and has worked with lot of motherboards, So I felt there is no point in sending a 399$ to find what happend and on top of that fixing charges.
I noticed the problem started when I installed Win 7 Ultimate edition to the board and let tbe board Idle for a long time and it went into sleep mode and when I hit the button for resume it would not resume, the blinking started.
I have seen the same thing happend to my friend laptop, luckily for him it recovered and he removed the Sleep Option. SO his laptop is shutdown or running in full power.
I thought this is not coincidence, there is defenitely a bug in HW or SW that is causing it. remove battery. I replaced the memory and removed the cmos battery and left for a long time (short the battery terminals to discharge quickly). Then I rebooted the machine, Luckuly for me it went to windows, I tht of replacing the BIOS firmware, bcos they ahve some latest on by that time I had a visitor and I was talking to him the system went into sleep mode and will never recover. The system started blinking. I dont see this as a CPU problem.
I still evaluating this. I will try to post my findings. I have aclip to read the BIOS chip but everytime i get different read. SO I am planning to remove the BIOS chip and put a socket so that I can play with the BIOS.

  • Pavilion dv4-1275mx notebook - once-flashing leds @ caps lock and scroll keys @ start-up

My HP Pavilion dv4-1275mx notebook runs Windows Vista Home Premium service pack 1 for 64x-based systems.
Recently, when I turn it on, the led lights @ the caps lock and scroll keys repeatedly flash once.
I'm not sure what, if anything, happened prior to this starting.  It's possible that there was a power surge when it was shut off, or it may be related to doing a McAfee virus scan or installing the latest version of a software, e.g., Adobe Reader.
I was able to use my System Recovery disks to reinstall the Vista software, thinking this might "kickstart" my computer into working, e.g., as part of the restart process.  After the reinstallation, I was able to use my computer, although the led lights continued to flash.  However, once I shut down my computer, I have been unable to restart it.  The leds continue to flash upon start-up, and I have not been successful in again reinstalling the Vista software.  (I thought if could get my computer to work again that way, it might stay accessible if I used hiberate mode instead of shutting it down.)
The computer's about 4-1/2 years old.  The screen has a short of some kind (only turning on when the screen is low to the keyboard, so I use an external monitor.

  • Caps lock and Scroll lock blink continuously without stopping

HP Pavilion Dv5 1004nr entertainment notebook. Caps lock & scroll lock blink continuously. Power light is on. Power light does not flash. Fan and drive start upon powering up. Held down 4 arrow keys during power up, but does not solve problem. Removed all external devices and removed battery. Same problem. Please help.

Urgh, appears to be bad RAM... Running memtest and switching sticks in and out only shows errors with one particular RAM stick installed. I'll leave this stick out and try installing Arch again once the current memtest pass is finished.
I'd have expected better from Patriot!

    Hi Suzieg,
I understand you’re getting a blank display when you turn on your laptop.
You mentioned the caps lock light blinking when you turn the computer on. Here is a link that will allow you to check and see if the blinking of those lights on the notebook, match what you see in this link . A lot of the time the lights can blink in a certain pattern, I would like you to take a look at the listing of blink codes and let me know if the laptop  lights are blinking in that nature.
When you open the link go down to the section titled “ LED's near Caps Lock and Number Lock keys blink when starting notebook”.
Please respond back with your results.
