HP Pavilion dv9920us will not bootup/shutdown when on battery power

When using the 2.6.27 kernel, my HP Pavilion will not boot up when using the battery power..... it won't shutdown either, it will just freeze mid-process unti I plug the AC adapter back in. During the boot up using the battery power, it freezes at the ACPI part.
This has happened on the 2.6.27-2-ARCH kernel, and all other versions of the 2.6.27 that I've built. (all rc versions from rc1 - rc7).
I wish I knew a way to fix this, I have a backup 2.6.26 kerenl on my GRUB list just in case there are no AC adapter outlets.... but it would be nice to fix this.

I have the NVIDIA GeForce 7150M / nForce 630M with AMD Turion 64 x2 TL-60 with 4GB RAM.... so it's pretty different than the dv9000.
My AC adapter is different too.

  • My MacBook Pro will not powerup (even when connected to power supply).

My MacBook Pro will not powerup (even when connected to power supply). The caps lock key is the only light on.

    Hi PatB11902,
Thank you for visiting Apple Support Communities.
If your MacBook Pro does not seem to power on, but the caps lock key will light up when you press the caps lock key, you are likely seeing a video issue.
There are several steps that can help troubleshoot this behavior, found at this link:
Apple computers: Troubleshooting issues with video on internal or external displays - Apple Support
    Start with these steps:
    Reset the system
You can reset the Mac's parameter RAM and SMC.
    Start up in Safe Mode.
If your Mac does not start up normally after these steps, here are some additional tips that can help:
Troubleshooting: My computer won't turn on - Apple Support
Verify you have a good connection from your Mac to the wall outlet by confirming the power cord and adapter if present are securely connected and plugged in. To check if the wall outlet is working, plug in a lamp or other electrical device.
If the wall outlet is working and you continue to have no power try another power cord or adapter if available. If it works you may need a replacement cord or adapter.
Disconnect all accessories that are plugged in to the computer, such as a printer, hub, or other mobile device.
If your Mac supports user-installable memory, solid state drive, or hard drive, and you recently installed any of these, make sure they are installed correctly and are compatible with your computer. If possible, reinstall the original memory or drive into the computer to find out if the behavior persists afterwards.
If you are still unable to start up your computer after trying each of these steps, visit an Apple Store or Apple Authorized Service Provider (AASP) for further diagnosis. If you plan to visit an Apple Retail Store, make a reservation at the Genius Bar using http://www.apple.com/retail/geniusbar/ (available in some countries only).
Note: Diagnostic fees may apply for issues not covered under warranty or the AppleCare Protection Plan (APP).
    Sincerely,
    Jeremy

  • Random Shutdowns when on Battery Power

    Hello!
My Macbook Pro is about 2 years old and it seems to be randomly shutting down when the battery is at about 40%. This has happened twice in the past 3 days. Both times, when the battery was at about 35-45% and was not plugged in with an adapter the computer would shut down without any warning and wouldn't turn on again unless it was plugged in. Once it restated (the full boot up) no applications acted as if they had "crashed" (though, thankfully I was never in the process of working on something, just browsing the internet), and Firefox, when reopened, opened up all my tabs as before the system crashed. Also, once it restarted the battery wasn't depleted and still showed about a 45% charge.
To complicate matters, the computer doesn't die every time the battery reaches 35-45% (one of those days it decharged fully and gave me the reserve battery warning as usual), so it doesn't seem to be a dead cell in the battery, if I understand correctly. The first time it randomly shut down was 3 days ago. Earlier today my computer decharged fully and gave me a reserve battery warning, at which point I plugged it in. However this evening it again died on my at 45% battery life, I restarted it by plugging it in, and then as an experiment unplugged it once it had started up. In the next 10 minutes it shut down once more.
I've removed the battery and there isn't any dust or grime, so that's not the problem as far as I know.
My battery information in the System Profiler comes out like this:
    Charge Information:
    Charge remaining (mAh): 1731
    Fully charged: No
    Charging: Yes
    Full charge capacity (mAh): 2547
    Health Information:
    Cycle count: 125
    Condition: Check Battery
So, is my battery dead or in the process of dying and I should consider replacing it? I'm still a little fuzzy on how cycle counts work, but 2 years seems like not a lot of time before replacing a battery.
Maybe my computer is overheating (I do have a case on it, but it should ventilate correctly)?
Or perhaps it has a virus? Though I have Norton Antivirus and it runs scans about 3 times a week and has not found anything ever.
I'd like to get this sorted out so I don't have to be paranoid about loosing my data in case I ever am working on something. And I'd really like to not have to plug it in all the time (I'm a college student...plugging it in everywhere on campus can be a pain in the ***).
    Thanks!!

    mybluehighways,
looking at your battery figures, your description of the computer's behaviour, and the age of the battery it is pretty clear that it has simply deteriorated to the point where it can no longer sustain normal operation.
The short answer is that you need a new battery.
The long answer is that when computers running on batteries shut down unexpectedly it is simply because the battery is not able to provide the transient power needed for a particular task or tasks. It usually occurs because the internal resistance in the battery has built up to the point where, though the battery can still store electricity, it can't deliver it sufficiently quickly to meet the demand.
It is like a car with plenty of petrol in the tank but a faulty fuel pump. It will trundle along quite happily on the flat for quite a while, but if you put your foot down to overtake or climb a hill the engine will stall because it can't get enough gas to meet the increased demand. At this point you can choose the dangerous option to keep on driving on flat roads only, and to never overtake anything or "put your foot down" to get out of trouble until the fuel pump dies completely (which you can be certain it will soon do), or you can get it fixed by getting a new one. The same applies with batteries, though you are "only" risking data loss and hard drive corruption with a computer, rather than your life!
The variation in the amount of time for which it ran before cutting out will simply be due to variations in power demand when doing different sorts of tasks. You will find, too, that the battery will cut out earlier and earlier, under lower and lower power demand situations, as it continues to deteriorate. (Once these batteries start exhibiting this behaviour you can be sure that they are well on the way out)
If you take your battery to an Apple AASP or Apple Store they can quickly test it for you, but if I were you I'd be preparing to buy a new one.
This has nothing to do with viruses or the like. It is a very common experience with the batteries in these MBPs when they are around a couple of years old. My own first battery in essentially the same model became problematic after 18 months.
    Cheers
    Rod

My Iphone 4 will not charge, only when the battery is totally dead.

    Hello, DrSmith_01.
Thank you for visiting Apple Support Communities.
I would make sure you are using an Apple branded cable with your iPhone.  If you are, the troubleshooting steps in the article below may help.

    Hi,
Bootup holding CMD+r, or the Option/alt key to boot from the Restore partition & use Disk Utility from there to Repair the Disk, then Repair Permissions.
If after reboot that doesn't help...
Open Console in Applications>Utilities & see if there are any clues or repeating messages when this happens.

Removed working Firefox 7, Installed Firefox 10.0, Firefox will not load. When I click on icon, firefox.exe process shows briefly in task manager, then goes away....no errors, nothing. Never see browser panel at all. Also tried to install Firefox 9.0, but the same result was observed.

Rather difficult to say what the problem may be at present but for general info please have a look at
    * [[safe mode]]
    *[[firefox will not start]]
    *[[firefox hangs]]
Note sometimes you may have to wait a while for firefox to shutdown completly, and if it has hung then as explained in the above articles you may need to kill any firefox.exe process that is still running (and maybe plugincontainer.exe)
Try starting firefox in [[safe mode]] e.g. by holding down shift key
    * do not make any changes in the first window, just click on continue<br/> ? Do you get as far as seeing the options window for safe mode ?
If firefox is crashing see [[firefox crashes]], this is easier to work through if you can get firefox to start without crashing on startup. Currently some firefox users are finding Firefox 10 crashes on startup, and a new version Firefox 10.0.1 is being released very soon to deal with this and another cause of hangs.
Not saying any of this applies to your case but recent issues include
    * ask tool bar causing hangs if video is used none English versions [/forums/contributors/708073]
    * possibly some crashes do not start the crash reporter and other issues [/forums/contributors/708122?page=2#post-45059]
    * some general info about current crashes [/questions/917748#answer-308124]

You need to sync the app to the iPod
iTunes: Syncing media content to iOS devices and iPod
Is the app compatible with your model iPod and iOS?
Are any Restrictions set that would prevent installing the app on your iPod? Settings>General>Restrictions
Do any apps no sync to the iPod?
Does any media now sync to the iPod?
Have you successfully synced aps to this iPod from this iTunes library before?

My mac will not show images when on the internet?  I think I have inadvertently changed some settings but nor sure which one.

I am going to assume you are using Safari here. If so then go to the Apple menu bar and hit Safari-> Preferences.  Under the Apperance tab there is a check box that is called "Display images when the page opens".  Check if that is unticked.

I had been saving as a PDF and then reducing the size of the PDF by printing it as a PDF with a degree of image compression. I write manuals with a LOT of screen captures and line art that needs to be clear. So it is a balancing act between image clarity and PDF size. The PDFs on the web need to be smaller - sure you can undertsand.
Anyway, when I print the PDF again, I lose both my destinations and bookmarks.
Anyone know of any way to avoid that?

Control the images by creating a custom PDF Job Options and then selecting it in the PDF Job Options drop-down of the PDF setup dialog box (File > Save as PDF...)
Create the custom PDF Job Options file with Distiller. If you do not have Distiller, open the Printing Preferences of the Adobe PDF printer. Start with the Smallest File Size Job Options settings and Edit.

I have a Power Mac G4 double mirrored model and everytime I shut it off it will not go on when I hit the power on/off button again. However, if I unplug and plug in the power cord it boots fine and everything is OK. The PMU and logic board have been reset. Sometimes my Mac goes on just by pressing the power on button but most times I have to pull the power cord and put it back in. Any ideas or help out there for this? Could it be a failing power supply? Apple Care says that this model is obsolete so there is no help from there. John

    Hi John,
That's often a sign of a bsad Capacitor in the Power Supply, but...
Might be time to replace the PRAM Battery, 4 years is close to their lifespan, far less if ever without AC power, & can cause strange startup problems...

    - Try another USB port.
    - Try on another computer
    - Inspect the dock connector on the iPod for bent or missing contacts, foreign material, corroded contacts, broken, missing or cracked plastic.

That does happen.  It depends on how hard the server is being hit, as well as the connection speed of your system.  If you are on a windows system, you will want to disable any antivirus or firewall software during the download.
