HP Pavilion Elite m9515y PC randomly crashes

Hi,
I have an m9515y that will run fine for a few hours and then crash. It will do one of two things:
1. Blue screen (memory dump)
2. It will stop outputting signal to the monitor, it will not respond to any mouse or keyboard inputs, the WiFi light will turn off, but the power light will remain on.
In either case, it must be rebooted and it will only run for a few hours again before repeating this behavior.
I blew away the hard drive (which had Vista on it) and loaded Windows 7. This did not help.
There is nothing in the event logs other than the usual "The system has rebooted without cleanly shutting down first. This error could be caused if the system stopped responding, crashed, or lost power unexpectedly."
I opened the case up and cleaned out the heatsink which was completely caked in dirt/dust. I thought maybe it was overheating but after cleaning the heatsink and leaving the side panel off, the behavior continued. I bought a couple of memory sticks, took the original sticks out, and tried running the system with one of the new sticks and then with both -- the machine still crashes with either configuration.
I booted up a Linux distro from a CD (no installation to hard drive) and it crashes even then.
I'm running out of ideas at this point. Power supply? CPU? Video card?
Is there any sort of HP diagnostic tool to test the different hardware components?
Thanks.

Hi,
Boot into the bios (f10 ) and then go to the Boot tab and enable boot time diagnostics and then reboot and run some diagnostics.
Does your PC have the NVIDIA 9500 video card? If no, what video card are you using?
If your PC is equipped with NVIDIA 9500 then it's a possibility that the 9500 video card is faulty.  Lots of problems have been reported with the NVIDIA 9500.  Since your PC has an integrated video processor, your could remove your video if you have one and run on the internal video processor and see what happens.
Does Linux crash right away?
What hard drive make and model is is your PC? If it's an original Seagate then look here for a possible firmware update. Yes I know you have Windows 7 and the update is for VISTA so it might not run.  Look carefully at the Seagate model numbers and check those against what you have installed if you have a Seagate hard drive.

  • HP PAVILION ELITE e9120Y

    Hi,
My HP PAVILION ELITE e9120Y was constantly crashing, freezing up. And I tried to do a restore, that never worked since day 1.
I tried reformatting the hard drive, first by using the F11 key, then the restoration disks, and niether work.
sometimes I get a message, "reboot and select proper boot device - or insert boot media in selected boot device, and press a key".
Other time I get a message error #1002.
I have a 3 year service black tie protection plan, but if its not the hard drive...then it will cost me over and above what I paid for the insurance. I am already past the 1 yr manufacturers warrenty.

I have the same...DId you upgrade to windows 7 and if you did the best thing to do is reinstall WIndows 7? Do a clean install.  Just insert the disc before windows boots, may have to change boot priority under bios shows key to press to enter bios, after windows 7 installed key may be another F something not F9 or F7 like it says, just have to try til you get to it.  Make the DVD/CD drive boot priority instead of HDD.  Can't remember if you hit the key to skip or use the disc.  Its one way or the other.  Doing a clean install will wipe everything...but is well worth it.  I do not have any lockups or freezes like I used to.  Windows Vista was bad...I got the free upgrade when I bought mine and Windows 7 was terrible at release I had blue screens of death, and freezes like you said...even in Vista.  Solution was months later with updates...unfortunately windows 7 was still messed up so a clean install fixed it.
So get a hard drive copy files you need then proceed with the clean install.  Time consuming but worth it.  Also I do not recommend updating the BIOS if you think that will fix it you can try.  I've tried reinstalling the BIOS over again thinking it might re-write whatever got messed up.  All I know is the CPU fan and motherboard voltages are messing up a lot...I used a software program to give readings and it shows it changes CPU and fan speeds randomly like reving up a car.  I've requested older BIOS to fix it, but HP won't give it and can't find older ones anywhere.  I've complained also...my warranty expired just a few days before this BIOS update.  Don't recommend 5.08 BIOS.
Also a few things to note...HP power supply isn't powerful to use all USB's at once...bought a USB Hub with multiple ports and a separate power supply adapter that plugs into it.  PC can be off but charges USB devices.  Mine crashed with too many USB plugs.
Also upgraded to Seagate Hybrid drive 500GB really fast now since its part Solid state drive...now 1TB is storage.
I use system mechanic software as well...works wonders for the PC($20 a yr,virus protection in it too)...just be sure to disable Security vulnerabilites as repair option or hide as problem...gave me all sorts of visual problems, apparently media players are hackable and need to be blocked according to the software.  All fixed once I found out what did it... Other then that I have my system running really, really well, besides the TERRIBLE BIOS UPDATE HP GAVE ME AFTER WARRANTY AND HASNT FIXED.

  • Pavilion Elite e9180f freezes, crashes, BSOD

I am one of the many unhappy customers who bought this piece of junk (Pavilion Elite e9180f) and waited too long to return it because in my naivete, I thought it was some kind of simple software issue.  Nope!  It's definitely something wrong with the hardware, because the freezes and crashes have been happening since day 1, right when I took the thing out of the box.
Yeah, the system is fast and runs Windows Vista great, when it's actually WORKING, which is usually only guaranteed for about the first 5 minutes after you power the system on and boot windows.  After that, it's just buying time before it crashes again.  Forget trying to get anything done on this computer.  Forget about asking this PC to play a video or music file without the files "stuttering" during playback.  Even my 7 year old Sony Vaio which is running XP can handle playing an MP3 file without stuttering and crashing!
Like everyone else, the freezes and crashes happen either one of two ways:
    1) The machine begins to "stutter", stutter more, then freeze/crash.  When I say stutter, I mean I move the mouse, the pointer graphic will hesitate on the screen and lag behind.  If you start to play a video or music file, this manifests in an audible "stutter".  The stuttering gets worse and worse as minutes pass until eventually it freezes for good, blasting that 1/50th second moment of audio into infinity.  You have to reboot immediately if you don't want to go deaf or be driven mad.
    2)  I will be doing nothing at the time (example, I close all programs out and leave Windows sitting on the main desktop screen), I'll walk out of the room for a minute, then come back and find I can't move the mouse. This system will often lock-up without any warning!
Sometimes I'll get a BSOD or error screen, sometimes I won't (in which case your only option is to do a cold re-boot.)  When I do get the BSOD, the error is ALWAYS the "did not get a response from the secondary processor" yada yada.  I wish HP would just admit they shipped this model out with a bad processor/motherboard/whatever and do an official recall.  I have owned PCs for the last 13 years and this is the worst and most consistently disappointing experience I have ever had.
What is the hardware issue?  Which part is the lemon part?  The motherboard?  The processor?  The BSODs seem to indicate a bad processor.  I do have the Pegatron Truckee version 1.03 motherboard.  Is that the problem?
P.S.  I have contacted HP on many occasions about this, literally stayed on the phone for hours with "customer support" (according to one HP rep, 80% of their customer service reps are based outside of the United States...good luck getting any "technical" help from them) to no avail.  I did talk to one nice tech support guy in Canada who said "it sounds like your unit has a bad processor", so he had HP send me a box to ship my unit to their repair center so they can replace the processor.  However, I have also had HP reps tell me it could be anything from the memory to the hard drive.  Multiple HP reps claimed to me that they have "received no complaints" about this system.  One guy told me he "thought he got an email last week" regarding "something" about the system, but couldn't remember what it was and he put me on hold while he searched for the email.  He never found it.  What a joke.
EDIT:  Just to clarify, the crashing issue has been happening since day one, but initially I thought it was an issue with Vista.  I had never owned or used Vista before, so I thought maybe Vista was just unstable.  Nope.  I know several people who own Vista and have never experienced these issues.  I have downloaded every update from Microsoft/Windows Update.  I have upgraded to Vista SP2 with all the latest drivers and software for all of my hardware.  No luck.  It is definitely a hardware issue.  Thank god HP's warranty is good for 1 year (I bought my Elite in July).

Unfortunately I have to add my disastrous encounter with HP's E9180F a true lemon HP is selling. I must take some responsibility for not carefully researching this model before I purchased, but I trusted the HP name and got stung- big time.
    The scoundrel  :
HP and its Pavilion Elite e9180f
    Windows 7 64bit
motherboard - Pegatron  Truckee ver 1.03
    BIOS ver  5.22Intel Core i7 920 @ 2.67GHz
    Memory 9206 MB Ram
As so many others have reported my HP E9180f started locking up and going to BSOD right out of the box. My first freeze-up came when I was doing the Windows update process. At first I didn't think much about it but I started getting random freezes a couple time a day. At that point I went online to see if others had experienced the same problem and perhaps had a fix. What I found was very troubling;  I found extensive documentation describing my exact problems and what was really horrifying was the reports of how ridiculous HP's help services were treating people with the problem. At first I didn't totally believe what I was reading on HP's own customer forum; I do now.
    ·         I've went through the total recovery process three times now, HP techs have spent hours remotely running my computer, (yes it did lock up on them to)
    ·         I had to upgraded the BIOS. (HP tech tried, said he had, but he hadn't)
    ·         I was directed to clear the BIOS (luckily for me I had the tools
    ·         Updated all drivers again and again.
    ·         Next I was asked to remove the video card, memory, and motherboard power cable and reseat them. I declined because I didn't want to give HP any reason to void my HP 2 year House Call Care Pack which covers this unit. When I invited HP to send a service tech out to perform these tasks, they said that house call only covers part replacement, we weren't replacing a part. I couldn't believe what I was told. Are you feeling my frustration?
Keep in mind that each time HP requests that I make changes, they then ask me to test the system, which I did and each time with the same result, BSOD
I'm heading into my fifth week of working with HP to fix this problem. and I still haven't even been able to get my case moved up to a senior case manager, what a joke HP's help process is.
     One conversation I loved was;
HP tech: "I'll have a senior case manager call you within 24 hours."
Skeptical me: "What should I do if I don't get a call?"
    Silence, no response.
Me again: "What should I do if I don't get a call?"
    HP tech: "That's an impossibility."
Guess what? The impossibility became reality (I bet you guessed) .
HP's last stall tactic was to have me fax them my proof of purchase and invoice and call back in 24 hours. Where have I heard that before? Apparently nothing can go forward until they receive it. So I faxed them the stuff within 10 minutes, and when I called back 24 hours later, guess what, you're right it wasn't on their system yet. I asked couldn't I be escalated to a senior case manager  (it's apparent that only a senior case manager can do anything). "No," was the tech's reply, "call back again later".
Please if anyone out there knows the secrete to getting a senior case manager, or an HP tech support number here in the U.S. so I can get this thing fixed I'd love to know it.
    Fast becoming HP never again.

  • HP Pavilion Elite e91804 experiencing lock-ups and crashing after LWSEP

    1. Product name and number: HP Pavilion Elite e91804
    2. Operating system: Windows 7 64 bit
    3. No error message (other than blue screen)
    4. My most recent change was sending my computer in for the Limited Warranty Service Enhancement Program, and receiving a new motherboard.
Before I sent my computer in for the LWSEP I was experiencing lock-ups and crashes only when I was multi-tasking (playing video games, listening to music, and having tabs open in firefox).
So I sent my computer in for the LWSEP to receive a new motherboard to fix these crashes, however after receiving my computer from them, the lock-ups and crashing have not been fixed and, in fact, have gotten worse. My computer will now lock-up and crash whenever I attempt to stream anything, be that music, video, etc. I can still occasionally play video games, assuming that I am doing nothing else, and that my computer cooperates with me (not locking up), but this only happens about 1/3 of the time.
My main confusion is that sending my computer in was supposed to fix my problem, not make it worse. Any help would be greatly appreciated.

    Joey, welcome to the forum.
Did you try uninstalling and reinstalling Chrome?  Sometimes a glitch will occur during the original install.  This can cause the problem that you are experiencing.
Also, you may want to try Internet Explorer or Firefox to see if you receive the same error message.  This will tell you if it is a problem with Chrome or a system problem.

  • HP Pavilion Elite e9220f crashing repeatedly after critical update

    HP Pavilion Elite e9220f, Windows 7 64-bit.
Crashed on 5/9/13, wouldn't reboot. Freezed with blinking cursor in upper left corner of blank screen after HP splash screen.
Changed HD from RAID to IDE mode in BIOS and Windows started but crashed with blue screen on trying to install the IDE controller driver automatically after start-up. Blue screen crash codes indicated the hard drive controller was the source.
System Restore lists several critical updates for Windows over the last few weeks. I ran System Restore in safe mode to 5/4/13 restore point, then rebooted to safe mode for confirmation of restore, and it then booted normally and successfully installed the IDE controller driver, but then crashed again as soon as subsequent critical updates were reinstalled. Disabling Windows Update via services.msc then restoring to 5/4/13 again finally stabilized the system, able to use normally without crashing.
To try to solve the underlying problem preventing further critical updates and allow me to turn on Windows Update again, I found the firmware update on HP's site for the hard drive, WDC WD10EADS-65M2B0, from version B0 to BX. However, after updating the firmware to BX, Windows now crashes upon starting even still at restore point 5/4/13 or even all the way back to 4/28/13, and now before it can even attempt to install the IDE controller. In otherwords, updating the firmware made it worse. The system is again unsable.
    Anyone else having this problem?
    JoEbYX

I agree that it is inexplicable, if that was indeed the case.
If the PC has a single drive, then it makes zero sense to use RAID mode. RAID is an acronym which stands for redundant array of inexpensive disks. The use of any form of RAID (0-5) requires a minimum of two physical hard disks.
AHCI and IDE are the only viable options with a single hard disk.
Did you make a backup or image of the hard disk?
    What is the installed OS?
You will need to  enable the SATA msAHCI driver in the operating system as this Microsoft document explains. Use the Microsoft Automated Fixit on the document to resolve the issue. It will take care of the registry change required. Afterwards you will need to enter the BIOS and verify the SATA mode is set to AHCI and if not, change it to AHCI before the next boot into Windows.

  • HP Pavilion - Random Crashes

Recently I have had problems with random crashes. I sometimes get a blue screen with a crash dump, other times the computer will lock up, or spontaneously reboot. Sometimes the audio will start stuttering and stop working until reboot. Other times the graphics driver will stop working, resulting in a black or frozen screen, then start working a few seconds later. Sometimes a reboot will be required to get the graphics working again. Most of the time, the computer crashes while booting up, and I will need a few reboots to finally arrive at the desktop. Sometimes I'll get blue screens while booting up, other times a lock up, or spontaneous reboot, or it'll look for arrays and hang there.
I have had this machine for over a year. The crashes have been increasing in frequency with time. I have cleaned the processor fan of some dust, but this hasn't mitigated the problems. I have installed a program called Speedfan which tells me the processor temperature is around 40c and seems to stay there. The computer seems more prone to crashing while audio or video is played, especially video. I have restored the hard drive to factory default, as I initially though it might be some corrupt windows files, but this hasn't changed anything.
When I use the hardware diagnostic tools, all the tests seem to pass with nothing of note displayed.
I'm not sure if the crash dump info is stored anywhere for me to copy and paste into this forum if that would help.
I would greatly appreciate any help if someone has any ideas of how to identify and solve this problem.

Here is some system information I found while looking through the hardware diagnostic tool, I hope this answers that part of your question.
I'll try to find this 'Event Viewer Log' and report back any findings.

  • Hp pavilion elite m9690a turns off input signal randomly after boot up

I have a pavilion elite m9690 running off of windows vista which recently (there have been no changes) begun switching off all input signals to the screen. Although the pc activation light and the pc are still on it then does not respond to the mouse, keyboard or switching source from hdmi to VGA leaving no input signals to the screen. When turned off then on again it regains input signal to the screen. The timing can be during startup or as late as 15 minutes of operation. I have plugged my l laptop into the screen and this never switches off on hdmi or VGA. I have made no changes to the pc but had some issues with heat a month ago.

I am having the same problem as Avro500! My computer is the hp pavillon desktop model a6863w. The computer freezes then the keyboard and mouse will not respond and the only thing I can do is shut it down and even then I have to hold the pwer button about 10 sec before it shuts off! I have unplugged all external devices like you told avro500 to do and I did finally get it started but the computer still freezes and it is doing it more often as time goes by! I even paid HP support the $100 dollars (or around that amount) to fix it but it keep happening even after they worked on it but it was after the 7 days or what ever their policy is! They downloaded some security suites and ran their scans! They left Advanced system care, ccleaner and superantispyware on my computer and I was just wondering if they could be conflicting with my paid norton internet security? I have become very flustrated because first off I paid a lot of money for this computer and it's not even 2 years old yet and I also have paid HP a lot of money to fix it and all the guy from India could say to me was "I have been working on this computer and it hasn't froze up so the problem must be fixed!" Well it's not!! and I don't know enough to fix it myself so thats why I paid you a hundred dollars to do it for me! haha thanks for any help!

  • Random crashes, Windows 7

Hey there Adobe community! I have seen a number of "random" crash threads without much resolution. Well, here is mine!
System is an HP Elite 8300 Workstation, i5 processor 3.2ghz, 6GB ram, Windows 7 SP1, good Nvidia graphics card with updated drivers.
    However, drum roll please.....
Random crashes occur, and I do mean random - no particular time/process when it crashes.

  • Hp pavilion elite m9500f

    this computer is god awful!
so I bought this computer and right off the bat I notice the cd rom trays after they're ejected won't go back in.  The outer door slides underneath the cd tray and prevents it from retracting.
but that was a minor issue, so I kept the computer.  3 weeks later the sata drive crashes.  I take it back to the store and they replace it for me.
so it works fine for about 3 weeks, and now it won't turn on.  I shut it off last night and this morning I push the power button and nothing happens.  I unplug it and plug it back in, it boots up enough to give me the blue screen of death.  and no matter what I do, it either doesn't even try to boot up, or it crashes while trying to boot up.
so today I'm taking the computer back to the store, but I WILL NOT be getting another hp any time soon, if ever.
maybe I'm just unlucky and picking the lemons of the computers, but after 2 major issues like this, I'm thinking its a design flaw as evident by the cd case.  obviously these things were built sloppily.

I purchased my HP Pavilion Elite m9350f on 09/20/08 and it died today. Since I bought the computer at Circuit City (no longer in business), I had to deal with HP's technical support department. I was kept on the phone for 87 minutes while they had me try the standard lame tests to see if the computer was really malfunctioning. They will not replace it with a new one. I am filing a complaint with my state's Office of Consumer Affairs. The motherboard went out on the computer. A motherboard should not break down after 6 months of use. The motherboard had to be already be defective when I purchased this computer.  I had this exact same problem with Gateway and that is why I no longer do business with them. Additionally, I learned from an insider that when you send in the computer, the replacement part is a refurbished part and it is only guaranteed for 90 days. The intent is to string you along until the warranty runs out. I will NEVER purchase another HP product.

  • I need help to replace my power supply for the hp pavilion elite m9510f

This computer has given me many problems since I bought it in '09. From graphic card fan issues, a hard drive crash, and now the power supply has failed.
I did the blow dryer trick but it still ends up breaking a week later. I want to know what new power supply should I buy. One that will be able to fit in the hp pavilion elite m9510f and is an upgrade to the 350w that it has. Maybe somthing under 60-70 dollars if possible. Thanks for any help.

It appears to be a normal case and motherboard.  A normal ATX supply should work: http://www.newegg.com/Product/ProductList.aspx?Submit=ENE&N=50001333&IsNodeId=1&Description=Computer...
Just an example of what is availble, but most any should work as long the physical dimensions match the one installed now.

  • Prone to random crashes

Hey, I've been trolling around these forums for a while. Been using Arch on my desktop at college for about 2 months now, and now that I have a few weeks off for break, I decided to try and install it on my laptop (an HP Pavilion ze2308wm).
I've got the base system installed, my wireless configured with ndiswrapper, ati drivers installed and working, and added a few extra programs (mplayer, rhythmbox, inkscape, etc).
All is fine and dandy with the exception of random crashes. These crashes vary in degree and almost none of them are similar.
Sometimes X just never starts up and I am left at a blank screen during boot. Sometimes my keyboard stops working unexpectedly. Sometimes everything suddenly moves sluggishly until the whole system freezes.
I'm just really confused about why my system is so unstable.
Here are my rc.conf and xorg.conf (respectively). I don't know if they'll be of any help, but rather too much info than not enough
If any more info is needed, then let me know,
And FYI, I've already tried reinstalling from scratch. Same results.

It's actually happened about 15 or so times since my last post.
Most of the time during boot. Either X will not work at all and I have a blank screen with frozen keyboard/mouse inputs, or right after I login it will go blank with frozen inputs, or sometimes it works fine for 30mins or so and then suddenly keyboard stops working followed by a complete system freeze.
I'm completely clueless as to why this is happening. My only guess is that is has something to do with my ATI drivers. I followed the wiki to install it and my card (Radeon XPress 200M) was in the compatibility list, but my main problem is always with X so that's all I can think of.
I may just try a complete system reinstall again. Then I'll take it slow from there and (hopefully) nothing will screw up again.

  • How big of a hard drive can I install in my HP Pavilion Elite e9220y Desktop PC

I have a  HP Pavilion Elite e9220y Desktop PC I have gotten an error on my hard drive BIOHD-8 imminate failure, I am going to replace my drive and would like to know if I can replace it with a 2 TB?

    Hi,
Should be ok to use 2TB HDD and lower. Anything bigger/larger (capacity) than 2.2TB you may get problem and have to do more work to be able to get it right.
    Regards,
    BH

  • Random Crashes with MSI x48c Platinum

    Hello everyone.
After crabbing some new hardware and putting it together, Im having trouble with these annoying random crashes. It does not happen often however, maybe a few times in a day. The screen turns black and the sound just loops forever. Then I have to restart it manually. Sometimes it will boot right up again, but other times I have to restart twice, because I dont even get the POST screen up, the screen just stays black.
    Motherboard: MSI x48c Platinum
    Graphic Card: Asus EAH4870
    RAM: OCZ DDR3 4 GB Platinum XTC DualChannel (PC3-12800 2x2048MB 1600MHz.)
    CPU: Intel Core 2 Quad Q9550 2.83GHz 1333Mhz
    PSU: Corsair CMPSU-750TXEU 750W
    OS: Windows Vista x64 Ultimate
I have a clean installation of Vista x64 and all the drivers are updated.
No overclocking, everything is running on default (Except I adjusted the graphic card fan, because it was hitting over 80 freaking Celsius when idling..!)
The temp for the CPU is 35-50c, and with the fan fix for my graphic card, its running on 50c. So overheating shouldnt be a problem.
Im really out of ideas here.. However, it does not say that my RAM is compedable with the motherboard in the manual, but doesnt that just mean its not tested with it? I think a new card like x48c should be able to run it just fine..
Any help would be much appreciated.
    Thanks in advice.

Still having the same problem, but it seems to happen more frequently now though.
I set the following options in BIOS to:
    Clock speed: 1066 MHz
    Voltage: 1.57V
    CAS# Latency(CL): 9
    RAS# to CAS# Delay (tRCD): 9
    RAS# Precharge (tRP): 9
    RAS# Activate to Precharge: 24
    It was something like, 7 7 7 38..
    Is these the right settings?
When I run CPUZ again after the changes, its still saying 7 7 7 20.. Also went into the BIOS again, and the settings were set to 9 9 9 24, am I missing out on something here?
Here is a screenshot of what the menu looks like; http://www.xbitlabs.com/images/mainboards/msi-x48-platinum/timings.jpg (Not my screen)
I also had to disable STD to get those menu-options.
So I tried to flash my BIOS instead, but the problem still remains. I used BIOS version 2.4, located here: http://global.msi.com.tw/index.php?func=downloaddetail&type=bios&maincat_no=1&prod_no=1392 (I used the forum tool btw, works great, thanks alot for that!)
Also tried to reset the CMOS, run default bios settings...
By the way, since I'm using DDR3 ram I had to use slot 1, and 3. Because the motherboard supports DDR2 as well.
(Sorry for bringing this old topic up, but its getting really annoying now)

  • Macbook Air Random crashing

    Hi Folks
I have been having some major issues with my Macbook Air (mid 2011, Yosemite 10.10.1, 1.6GHZ core i5, 2 GB 1333 MHz DDR3)
It randomly crashes during use. Programs stop working and then the spinning beachball pops up for a few seconds before everything crashes and I have to power off/on
I did a number of system resets and reinstallation's and for a while now I have had it running generally ok except a few crashes here and there when I am using it a lot. Just had a few issues tonight and had 3 crashes in quick succession and also the ? folder pop up once.
For the first time though the system reported an error code and I have pasted it below. Has anyone seen this before or can anyone decipher what it means? I am no expert so it means very little to me. Any help would be much appreciated
    Many thanks
