HP Pavilion g6 screen backlight flickers

Hi,
my laptop screen backlight goes off, when I rest my hand on the left side of the touchpad. The darkening of the screen can be also reproduced when a small pressure is applied on the case just above the ethernet port or above the headphones port.
When the screen goes dark, I can see that everything is running normal, if I shine on it with a lamp or strong light. The resulting effect seems to be the same as if I would have lowered the brightness to minimum.
When I don't press the area described above, the screen is just fine. I am sure this problem is not software or OS related. I googled it a lot and my guess is lose connection on the inverter?
One last thing - idk if related - sometimes, when I boot up the laptop, the backlight is turned off and I have to adjust it by pressing F3.
Thanks for suggestions.

  • Lenovo U310 LCD Screen Backlight Won't Turn On.

I purchased a new U310 near the end of August this year, using it primarily to bring with me to school.  However, I've been having a problem with the LCD screen backlight.  Typically, when the computer starts up, the backlight will be working fine.  However, once the computer goes into powersave mode and shuts the display off, often the backlight to the display will not turn on again regardless of if I press keys or the touchpad.  These are some things I've noticed:
The display IS still on.  I can still very faintly make out the desktop and use the system, but the backlight is off completely
This issue does not happen all of the time, but is still quite frequent
Sometimes putting the computer to sleep and then waking it solves the problem, but not all of the time
Sometimes the backlight remains off even after a forced power off (holding down the power button), but typically a restart solves the problem and enables the backlight again
Adjusting screen brightness has no effect
This happens regardless of the battery level and whether or not the system is plugged in
Although this issue has seemed more prevalent recently, it even happened on the day I bought the laptop, but I just wasn't yet aware it was a reoccurring issue
I've been able to recreate this issue, in fact I was just able to make it happen twice in a row.  First time the display went off and didn't turn back on, I restarted.  This even repeated the next time the display went into powersave mode, so I restarted again.  The third time the display went into powersave mode, I was able to turn it on again simply by touching the touchpad (as it should be).
I think that about sums up what I know.  I apologize for making such a long post, but I'm thinking I can't be the only one with this issue.  I'm new to the community and couldn't find a similar post anywhere on the forums.  Since I infrequently use this system, and the issue has been there since I got it, I'm assuming it must be a driver problem.  If anyone has any insight or is experiencing similar problems, I'd be glad to hear!  I thought I'd post before contacting Lenovo directly.  Thanks!

I suggest you please uninstall the energy management software, reebot and install it again. You will find the setup of energy management in drivers folder in the drive named lenovo ( maybe E or D). Please give it a shot and post results.

  • Possible solution to random Macbook backlight flickering

I was one of the lucky Macbook users who didn't have that random backlight flickering issue which forced many users to send their beloved macbook to change LCD inverter, logic board or other hardware.
I've been using my MA700 for a year and a half now and I'm out of warranty. Few days back I noticed a flickering which kicks in at random, but could be reproduced when setting "put display to sleep" to 1 minute and waiting. The sleep has two stages - in the first one the screen dims a bit and after some time it switches off backlight completely. The flickering ALWAYS occured when going in to the first stage, also it did occur OFTEN while working with my computer AT RANDOM times. Since I'm out of warranty I started experimenting and retracing my steps. Here's what I found out.
About a week before I bought a new HDD for my macbook, as the one (80GB toshiba drive) that came with macbook was too small for me. I replaced it and restored the system. Everything was fine for a week until backlight flicker kicked in and it was very annoying. I even ordered inverter board from ebay. I noticed that my new HDD is emitting a slight vibration which is noticeable even if touching the top of the lcd screen, I thought it is ok, because my new HDD ir 320GB - quite a bit larger than my original one. Today I tried something different.
    1. I reproduced the flickering by setting display sleep to 1 minute.
    2. Flicker kicked in.
    3. I turned of the computer, removed the HDD, attached it to the SATA>USB case and booted from USB Disk while holding alt at start up.
    4. Guess what, no more random flicker. Also, I couldn't reproduce flicker while setting display sleep to 1 minute.
    5. To double check I put the HDD back in my macbook and booted as usual.
    6. Flicker kicks in at random and is reproducable by setting display sleep to 1 minute.
    7. IT MUST BE THE HDD.
    8. I swapped the 320GB one to the old 80GB that came with my macbook.
    9. No flicker at random since. No flicker can be reproduced when setting display sleep to 1 minute.
I think there is some hardware incompatibility, possibly something to do with power consumption or added vibration. I am no expert, but I'm pretty sure the Samsung Spinpoint M60 HM320JI caused backlight flickering on my system as I was able to repeteadly reproduce the flickering effects and eliminate them by swaping back to my old HDD which is Toshiba MK8034GSX (I did this experiment 5 times now - and got the same results everytime I did this).
The most interesting fact is that right after I changed my HDD to large Samsung model I didn't see (or maybe didn't notice) flickering till about the week, maybe some of you had similar scenarious where you crossed out the possibility of HDD as a cause, because flickering didn't kick in for some time.
The easiest way to check if my story applies to you is to remove your hdd put it in a SATA > USB case and boot in your system from your HDD attached to USB. If the flickering stops and it is not reproducable by setting display sleep settings, IT MUST BE THE HDD!
    Good luck!
    P.S. Excuse my english.

Possibly it is power consumption of your old HDD, that is causing the problems? Anyway I am experiencing this flickering too, and will try your solution...
My flickering is like switching intensity of backlight to dim and back to intensity that is set. It happens after wake from sleep in case that display is more dimmed.
iedutu's flickering seems to be of other kind - something like low refresh rate - video is not clear enough...

  • Macbook pro screen freezing/flickering   peripheral failure

    Hey guys
I use my Macbook Pro both at home for music production and live as an instrument. Recently I have been having problems, but for some reason these have never materialised at home - only in the live situation. I shall try to give as much info as possible, but I'm no use with Macs having been raised with windows machines.
    Mac OS X 10.6.8
2.5 GHz Intel Core 2 Duo
    4GB 667 MHz DDR2 SDRAM
I have around 13GB free HD space
It is second hand and therefore I have no idea about warranty. I have had the machine for over a year.
    I THINK it's a 2008 17" model, although I am not sure.
    Peripherals at home:
    Digidesign Mbox 2 - USB
    USB Mouse (third party)
    M audio Oxygen 8 V2 keyboard - USB
HD TV as a second screen - DVI - VGA adapter
    Live:
Novation Nio 2|4 uadio interface - USB
    Novation Launchpad - USB
    M audio Oxygen 8 V2 - USB
(Software wise I a running ableton 8 suite with izotope stutter edit. I average about 6% cpu usage)
Recently, my audio interfaces have begun to fail, but only in the live environment. I can switch the Mbox for the Nio at home and there are no problems whatsoever. 2 shows in a row this had failed, so I made sure to test all the equipment extensively. After 2 days of using the Nio as my soundcard using a different USB cable and slot, I assumed the problem was fixed.
On friday night we were playing a show, and mid set the screen froze with glitchy sections - looked like someone had broken the matrix. The screen began flickering in and out very fast in a strobe like fashion. My peripherals were still working fine, so I continued with the show in the hope that I could just control the session from them. Moments later, the audio failed, ad the system eventually cut out. I attempted to buy time and boot up again, but the same thing happened almost instantly.
Now that i've had a chance to get home and try it out, it has been working for hours at a time until eventually doing the same thing. I have found that most the time my usb mouse will remain responsive, yet I am unable to click on anything. Again, the sound generally keeps working, but one by one the peripherals fail. The screen flickering has only been temporary in the home setting, and does not sustain throughout the failure.
I'm generally poor with electronics, but the general consensus seems to be that it may be some kind of electro magnetism/static/I don't know effecting it live? I have never had a single problem with the machine until now. These failures have occured both running on battery and from mains power.

You may be right that a part of the problem is due to external electro-magnetic interference, but could also be heat build up, and the fact that at home it runs for hours before an issue starts, heat is probably a part of the problem.  If you can, stop by an Apple store genius bar and let the techs run some diagnostics, explain what is happening and see if they can isolate the issue.  You may want to leave it with them for a few hours and let it sit there and run to see if heat is an issue.

  • Macbook pro 15inch (early 2011) i7 screen backlight

Hello I need some help. Recently my macbook pro the screen backlight only come on when cold. If i close the lid then the computer is on for a while, The screen will be black. I get a flash light and point it at the apple in the back and can see the screen is on and computer is working. Just the Backlight isnt on. Plus now that its doing that, The F1 F2 work you can see it pop up on the screen. But I cant adjust the brightness at all. Not from the keyboard nor from the prefrences. Tried SMC and PRAM no luck. Also made sure the lcd cable was pluged in all the way. So the screen only works when cold intel I turn it off or close the lid. So I have to keep the screen up till I go to bed. Why would it only work cold? and how come I cant adjust the brightness any more? I can use any help Thanks!

The guys at the Genius Bar are really good at physical problems like these.
An appointment for an evaluation is free, in warranty or out. And if they can fix it on the spot without replacing parts, they usually will.

Look at the link I posted, you aren't double buffering correctly.
I saw the other post you mistakenly made before you edited it. Not really a big deal, I was just wondering why you did that.

  • Spilled Drink - Laptop won't recognise power adapter + screen backlight

    Hi.
The other day, I had my 17" MacBookPro in a satchel bag, but made the foolish choice of leaving my Lucozade (Orange flavour if that helps!) in the bag.
Obviously, the Lucozade burst, submerging around two inches of the laptop, there part where the screen connects to the laptop, and submerging the power adapter port.
Now for around twenty four hours, the power adapter charged the laptop, but unfortunatly, the backlight on the screen suddenly didn't work, as in you could very faintly see it, but when you try to turn the display up, nothing happened.
Twenty four hours after the spill, the power adapter failed. I'm pretty certain it isn't the power adapter, which means the problems seems to lie with the power adapter port.
Now I opened up the laptop two days ago, (three days after the accident), and cleaned what ever Lucozade there was, and just in general cleaned up the insides of the MacBookPro (which is now around two-and-a-half years old.) Unfortunatly it didn't work.
So currently I have a MacBookPro with no battery power, and no screen backlight. So what i'm asking is for any advice at all!
Is it worth taking it to an independant laptop repair business? Would they be able to do much more than me?
Should I take it to a Mac shop? Would they know what to do?
Is there anything I can do myself?
Anyone else had a similar experience?!
    Thanks a lot.
    Christian.

I think the problem may be with the inverter board or cable. Do you have access to an external display? Maybe one you could borrow? If so, hook it up and see if you have good video on it. If you do, that would indicate that the video chip on the logic board is OK. And if you can get good video on the external, it would be a good opportunity to run the Apple Hardware Test.
One thing is that you really need to remove all traces of the Lucozade or you could have further issues on down the line. You could practice on the I/O board you removed. Flush it thoroughly with distilled or deionized water and dry it thoroughly (this could take weeks, maybe less if you have a warm dry place for drying). You could try cleaning any affected part this way, and it's possible--though not certain--that it could work again.
You probably have found ifixit and PowerBook Medic by now. Let me give you another link:

This is an index--you will have to find your specific manual and download it. But I think you'll find it useful.
    Good luck!

  • PB 15" screen backlight after sleep problem

I have an intermittent problem wherein my display backlight will not light sometimes upon waking up my PB from sleep. The backlight is totally out when this happens, not just dimmed. The laptop is on and the display itself is functioning (I can barely see the images on the dark screen) but the backlight is out. I have to press the power button for a second to get the "shut down" box, shut down the PB and restart it. During the boot process the screen backlight eventually relights. Anyone else having this problem?

    Try to replace inverter board.
    http://www.ifixit.com/cart/customer/product.php?productid=746&cat=&page=1
Really easy to replace if yours is still under warranty then bring to nearest AASP or Apple store, If not then to replace inverter board you neew to use allen key to open 2 screws in the display open your display as wide as possible more than 90 degree and try to take the screws out.
Then use plastic stick/nylon sticj to pry open the display along the light and dark grey plastic and after you open the display bezel you will see the inverter board located in the bottom of your display.
    Hope this help

    likely display inverter board.
did you get your inverter board replaced already?
    Did you have a question?
If the diagnostic in shop indicates same, thats 1000X better than anyone can do online in "diagnosis" (not really genuine diagnosis of course)

  • My Macbook Pro with Retina display screen keeps flickering a ghost screen.

My Macbook is a year and a half old, and has never been dropped or damaged.  A few months ago, the screen started flickering.  Not like off and on, but a ghost screen would flicker on top of what I was doing.  It is usually the same window that I have present, but just like half of it for a millisecond.  It is very annoying and is unpredictable.  It usually happens for hours every few seconds.  What should I do to fix this?  I try to take a screen shot to post but it either happens too fast or is not possible to record.

  • IPhone 5 screen is flickering randomly, the phone freezes and the screen turns black.

I bought an iPhone 5 in New York last December. Now I live in Bogotá, Colombia and I can't find an authorized service center because they said that only if I bought it from a local carrier they attend the warranty.
My iPhone 5 screen is flickering randomly, the phone freezes and the screen turns black… The only way to make it work is to reboot with Home and Lock buttons pressed at the same time. But in the process most of the times it flickers again, and again, and again. I couldn't find a reason to identify what could be causing the issue. Also sometimes when it freezes, some group applications get ungrouped, causing a big mess.
I already tried to restore the phone, remove the SIM, delete all applications with no luck.
    Any sugestion? Thanks!

    Was this phone ever jalbroken?
If restoring as new, without using a backup, didn't help, there is certainly a hardware problem that only replacement can fix.  Your warranty is void unless you return to the USA.  Short of that, finding a local independent iPhone repair center would be your only option
