HP Pavilion G7 notebook locks up after Windows 8.1 upgrade

Looking for some help & advice here.....
I upgraded my HP Pavilion G7 notebook from Windows to Windows 8.1......and now it appears to lock up after a while.
I have a Ralink RT3290 adapter and saw that may be a new driver will fix this problem but I'm not sure
Other system info:
Product # C2M35UAR#ABA
System Board 1845 56.32
System BIOS F.24
Any help appreciated here.....
Many Thanks!

@cpal
I did some searching for you looking for any updated drivers that might work. The problem is that Ralink was bought out a few years ago, and many of the Ralink devices do not have Windows 8.1 drivers, even from them. Given the choice it would be better to use the HP versions if windows 8 versions are the only option because at least the driver would have been somewhat customized to be compatible with the normal set of hardware in a HP notebook.
Here are a few you can try that may help:
MediaTek(Ralink)802.11 b/g/n Wireless LAN (WLAN) Adapter
Ralink 802.11 b/g/n Wireless LAN Adapter Driver
Hopefully one of those will work for you, otherwise we can only look for MediaTek to make an updated driver for windows 8.1 in the future.
And if you are interested here is a blurb on Ralink  - wikipedia.org

Welcome to the HP Forums  MillaMagia,
I see by your post that the USB isn't being recognized.
I can help you with this issue.
Are you using the same USB cable? (known good USB cable)
You want to use the normal USB slot 2.0 cable and not the latest USB 3.0.
USB 3.0 are supposed to be backwards compatible.
Try another USB port on the Laptop, some of the USB ports are more powered then others.
I have provided a document to see if the printer is partially recognized in the device manager, which is causing the printer not to be recognized again. (the uninstall from the CD should have removed the entry and the printer from the registry)
Leave the printer turned on and the USB cable connected directly to the computer and the printer's power cord directly into a wall outlet.
How do I get into Windows Device Manager?
Here is a document for Identifying problems in Windows Device Manager.
Check to see if there are any hardware driver conflicts, you might see a ! mark or a red x beside a device with a conflict or unknown device, look under universal serial bus controllers, look for USB printing support or mass storage device, delete the entry by right clicking and select uninstall, OK.
Let me know how it was listed. (screen shots welcome)
If this is a Laptop then check the power management settings.
Access the device manager. Windows 8-How do I access the Device Manager.
Select universal serial bus controllers from the list, for each USB root hub, right click and left click on properties, for power management remove the check mark for "Allow the computer to turn off this device to save power". It allows the computer to limit or turn off power for this device.
Disconnect the USB, run the full uninstall and reinstall the printer software again.
If you need further assistance, let me know.
    Have a nice day!
    Thank You.

First of all you need to get into safemode
for that press f8 or del key while starting the computer
then you will get many options there you must go to safemode
Secondly ,after getting to safemode go to 1.control panel ->2.Device Manager->3.Disable AMD HD Graphics
    Thats all
then restart your computer to get into normal mode
May be if you upgrade your amd hd driver your black screen problem will be gone

    Hello,
I just bought a HP Pavilion 17 Notebook PC 17-e046us
I've already installed Windows 7 64bit Professional (Win8 was the default)
Several of the components were registering with erors in Device Manager.
I was able to dig deeper into all the drivers that HP listed as 8 only, however the fine print said that most of them were compatable with Win7.
I'm still missing the following hardware IDs and would really like the help getting the Windows 7 64bit Professional drivers for the following :

  • HP Pavilion 17 Notebook PC 17-f253nc Windows 7 - unable to find drivers

Hello everyone,I have bought notebook "HP Pavilion 17 Notebook PC 17-f253nc". When I installed Windows 7 and turned on the notebook, I found out there are no drivers here, so I decided to look them up on HP webpage. But there are drivers for Windows 8.1 only. Would you be so kind and advise me where can I find them? (if they exist). Thank you, plejda

You're very welcome. Please do the following steps so I can confirm what model wireless card your notebook has... Go to the device manager, Other Devices category, and click on the device labeled Network Controller that needs the drivers. Then click on the Details tab at the top of the network controller window. Now you see a Property drop down list and it is defaulted to Device Description. Drop down on that and select the second item on the list (Hardware ID's). Post the top string of characters that begin with PCI\VEN. Then I will post the link to the driver you need.

  • Problems with Twist Before and after Windows 8.1 Upgrade

I'm not sure if this is a problem on Windows' end or Lenovo's, but here it goes. Problems AFTER Windows 8.1 update:
1.) When I close the computer, even though the power management settings are set to put the computer to sleep, it only goes to sleep about 50% of the time. If I don't catch it, that means the battery will drain completely while I'm under the impression it's sleeping. The kicker is, even if I do catch it, I can't get the computer to turn back on. The screen stays black until I hold the power button down and force the computer to turn off and restart it.
2.) iTunes will not open. I don't get any numbered error message, just a message that it failed. I've tried running iTunes in compatibility mode, and I've uninstalled and reinstalled it, to no avail.
    Problems BEFORE:
1.) When I first got the computer, it was super quiet. Now the fan is pretty loud and buzzy. It seems that it may even be brushing something, because if I push the bottom up ever so gently, the sound goes down by half. Not a huge issue, but especially noticeable when I'm in tablet mode.
I know that at least the last one isn't a unique problem. I can kind of live with that, but the first two are really driving me nuts.

I made the mistake of loading W8.1 on my Twist without realizing how raw and bug prone the preview really could be.  The backout would require reloading a lot of applications, and this is not my primary PC, so I am toughing it out.  Saw updates load.  Current build is 9431.
I am currently uninstalling software and updates until I get a stable environment again.  Here is some general feedback...
I have not had an issue with the Lenovo System Update running.  I suggest you do ONE update at a time.
50% of the shutdown/reboots fail and I need to hard power off with the power button
Manually loading the latest Intel video driver software caused MAJOR problems.  Many programs simply did not run and everything was locking up.  Backing that out motivated me to remove other stuff.  The Lenovo System Update is offering to install a driver which I will attempt after all other firmware and drivers are updated.
I use the Classic Shell v3.6.8 on the desktop.  I thought the 8.1 would return the start button, but I assume that Classic Shell is overriding that.
Like others, I have had trouble getting the Juniper VPN software to load and work.  Trying to back everything out, but the virtual juniper nic is still showing up in the device manager.
I am usually a reader of discussion forums and not a poster.  I will do my best to post my resolutions as well as issues.

  • Unable to start after Windows 7 Pro upgrade, am I crazy?

I'm now on my fourth try and I'm about to lose my patience.
I purchased a T400 6475-B14 with Vista, 32 bit.  I purchased a copy of Windows 7 Professional upgrade.  I am installing the 64 bit disc.  Currently the machine has 2GB of ram, but I ordered 4GB (2X2GB) of RAM from Lenovo and it should be here in a few days.  Additionally, since the machine is still under warranty Lenovo is sending me the restore discs (I think that's what they are called) and they should be here in a few days as well.
On my three previous attempts I upgrade the OS and everything seems to be fine.  However when I go to the Lenovo site it can't detect my system.  That seems a bit odd, but I can deal with it.  I put in all of the machine info and download the Toolbox.  Once I did that tells me to download the System Updater, but for some reason it forwards me to the link for Vista/XP.  I then manually find the System Updater, Win 7 64 bit, download and install it and it finds and installs the PowerManager, Connections, Recovery and Repair, etc.
I don't seem to have any problems until I shut down the machine.  When I go to restart, the machine hangs at the 4 color Microsoft logo.  After a few minutes (5-10) it gives me the option to try and restore to a previous point and fix the machine.  However each time it tells me that the system is unable to repair itself.  I then reboot and hit the F11 button at the THINKPAD screen and restore to a previous version.
Last night, after the two previous restorations failed to give me a stable machine I completely reinstalled the OS.  Everything seemed to be working fine again.  However this time I rebooted after each update, to see where the problem might be.
I had downloaded all of the System updater info except for the R & R and C++.  I installed C++, but it didn't require a restart.  I think installed the R & R, installed it and then machine rebooted.
Then the same thing happened again!!!!!!!!
I went into the diagnostics and it came the the following:
    Root Cause Found:
A recent driver installation or upgrade may be preventing the system from starting.
    Repair Action: System Restore
Result: Failed.  Error code = 0x1f
Repair action: System filed integrity check and repair
Result: Failed.  Error code = 0x490
    Time taken = 945178ms
I'm going to re-install Windows 7 again, but this is starting to really drive me crazy (granted it's a short road, but still!).
Can anyone help me understand what I'm doing wrong?  I'm not trying to do anything crazy and I'm following the instructions to the letter but I still can't seem to get my system to work!!!!!!
Any/all help would be greatly appreciated.
    Cheers,

    Hi,
You are doing (trying to do) exactly what I did when I punted Vista (good riddance!) and updated to Win 7 Pro 64 on my T400.  I don't see anything obvious that you are doing wrong.  Here's what I did:
Installed Win 7 upgrade as a clean install. Then ran Windows update.  Then installed ThinkVantage System Update for Win 7, and let it do its thing,  No problems.
Is that the updater you installed?

  • System won't turn off, restart, hibernate or sleep after Windows 8.1 upgrade

    Help, please!!
Two days ago in windows 8 store popped up an update to windows 8.1 for my pc. I am an owner of two notebook PC-s, both Lenovo, G580(which upgraded successfully without any issues, also it has intel inside) and G585(which upgraded without any issues, untill
the set up completed and it booted up, it has AMD)
So the AMD one, Lenovo G585, refuses to shut down, restart, sleep or hibernate, the only way to shut it down is to force it to turn off, meaning i have to press the power button for a couple of seconds. Along with other issues this is the only one i wasn't
able to resolve. I have contacted my Lenovo support and they said there is nothing they can do and that i can only wait for an update... and in the meantime am i supposed to let this windows 8.1 upgrade
    mess up my new notebook?
Ok, so i was stupid enough not to run windows 8 backup before i started this update, silly me, thinking what could go wrong, it's not like M$ described this upgrade as something like evolution of the century,
but enough about that, i have tried every possible solution, updated my drivers, run admin cmd and typed powercfg -devicequery wake_armed - it displayed NONE, typed powercfg -lastwake - it displayed wake history count - 0, i tried entering BIOS and checking
if there is anything in there i could possibly change, found nothing, tried disabling hibernate, still nothing, and each time i try putting my pc in one of those states the screen turns off, and it all seems like the pc will any moment and yet nothing it just
stays on for countless hours unless i once again force it to shut down, also when in sleep mode no keys work for waking it up, mouse and keyboard are meaningless, the only button that works is the power button which turns it off completely and then i can turn
it on all the way from the begining, so far at least that makes me happy, but continuing like this i will mess up my PC.
    PC specs:
    OS - Windows 8.1 x64, came preinstalled Windows 8 x64
Processor: AMD E-300 APU with Radeon HD Graphics 1.30GHz
    RAM: 4GB
Microsoft, any solutions to this one?

Last week I put a new hard drive in and loaded Windows 8 instead of Windows 7 (which I was previously using), it is a legit copy I had purchased and downloaded from Microsoft when Windows 8 first came out.  I had problems with activation, called Microsoft
and they remotely connected fixing the problem.  Sleep Mode worked until it did the 8.1 upgrade. Now the System will not turn off, Sleep or Hibernate.  If I go to Sleep or Hibernate, the monitor turns off, hard drive turns off, but the fans are still
running.  Try to wake up with mouse and nothing happens, have to hit the restart button.  If I try to shut down, it does the same thing, I can only shut down by holding the button.  I have tried everything suggested here, nothing has worked.
I would reload, but don't want to have to go through the problem of activating again.  The system32>sfc /scannow found nothing wrong, network adapter is not allowed to wake the computer, sharing turned off, and disabled the hybrid-shutdown-feature.
Computer has been scanned and re-scanned, not infections.  Video driver was re-installed.  I have checked all settings in BIOS.
I was hoping that someone has found a solution to this problem.
