  • Need settings for H.264 to AVCHD on DVD

I'm trying to use Compressor 3.5.2 to encode a movie to H.264 for Blu-ray, which I will then feed to Toast for burning onto a DVD. The only settings I see in Compressor for that use bitrates that are much too high for the red laser DVD technology, so I need to knock the max and average down to 17 and 15 Mbps respectively.
Hoping to just tweak the defaults, I saved the "H.264 for Blu-ray" settings and can see and edit the .setting file, but if I touch it at all with TextEdit or TextWrangler, it no longer loads when Compressor starts and it's not available.
Can I get there from here?

Let me first just reiterate that my problem with Compressor is no doubt because I'm trying to use it in an unsupported installation on my PowerPC-based Mac. It appears to work fine in every other respect, but the Blu-ray file formats seem to not install or are otherwise invisible. My gut tells me the H.264 encoder is not Intel-only, but I can't interface with it. If there are other PPC users here, I'd love to hear if any can use the blu-ray features.
My process now is to edit my HDV camera video, sometimes adding photos, then export from iMovie (or FCP, but usually iMovie) via Quicktime as AIC video and PCM audio. My captured camera video files are ~100 Mbps. The export from iMovie to AIC produces a large file but is fairly speedy and avoids multiple compression steps later on. The large resulting AIC file can be dropped directly into Toast and emerge a couple days later as an H.264 video file (.264 extension, I believe a transport stream?) plus an ac3 audio file. Toast puts these intermediate files in it's Roxio Converted Items folder and will go ahead and multiplex these and put them onto AVCHD for playing on a BD player. It deletes the files if you quit the program or you're not careful, but you can rescue the encoded files at the intermediate step if, for instance, you want to replace the .ac3 with a surround mix you've prepared with Compressor. If you feed the intermediate .264 file back into Toast, this will not trigger a re-encoding and it will go ahead with multiplexing and burning.
In Toast you can tweak the average and max bitrates and the codec, AVC or MPEG-2, when encoding for AVCHD. Since AVCHD is limited by the red laser to ~18 Mbps, I've set Toast to encode to AVC at bitrates just below the limit. This should give the highest fidelity possible, and an overall compression from my source material of ~7X. In fact I did some testing and found that this produced a better image than sticking with Toast's default bitrates which were much lower (maybe 20X? overall compression), or with the MPEG-2 codec. Of course encoding to AVC takes longer than MPEG-2, but they're both slow.
So if this all works in Toast, why am I bothering with Compressor? Two main reasons:
    1) I was hopeful that Compressor might be faster and/or better at encoding. If anyone here can address the speed versus quality issue for these two encoders, I'd appreciate hearing about it.
    2) Toast can be flaky, for example sometimes hanging at the dreaded error -18771 after a day of encoding.
    3) A third but minor reason is the availability of templates in Compressor I may like more than the Toast templates.

  • Trouble with display settings for projector/Reactable

    Hi,
I'm trying to install a musical hardware interface called the Reactable for use with my iMac, and I'm having trouble getting the correct display settings. It's designed to work with laptops and it works fine for the most part with my Apple Hackintosh, but I can't seem to get it working correctly with my iMac. The tech support from the Reactable company recommends that I use 1600x1200 resolution or 1024x768 (native) on the projector, but when I open my display settings I am not presented with either of those options. It only permits me to use 1024x768 and 1024x768 (stretched).
The only instance in which I can get the projection to cover the whole table is with 1024x768, but then the projection is too large. Do I need to change the scaling somehow? How do I do that?
    Thanks,
    Justin

1080p.    If you have a Mac Mini with an HDMI connector, connect direct through there.
Otherwise you'll need to look at either: Which Macs don't have audio over mini-Displayport connectivity, need either an
Apogee DVI To HDMI Converter / SPDIF Optical Toslink+Coaxial Input Output if you have a mini-DVI or DVI (The left connector is DVI, and the right connector is mini-DVI) connector and it is Intel.
    Kanex iAdapt Displayport adaptor if you have a mini-Displayport ( http://upload.wikimedia.org/wikipedia/commons/thumb/4/47/Mini_DisplayPort_on_App le_MacBook.jpg/300px-Mini_DisplayPort_on_Apple_MacBook.jpg
    ) connector.
Note, thunderbolt connectors look the same as mini-Displayport except they have the lightning icon symbol.
PowerPC Mac Minis, need a StarTech DVI2HDMIA connector together with an RCA minijack to red and white splitter cable.

  • Getting profiles or color settings for projectors....

I do some presentations arround and usually I don´t have much problems with color and calibrating the presentation, but some times....color gets bad . I wander If is possible to get the projector profiles from apple or the companies to be set into the system , so I only have to look for that projector when connecting to it.....
Sometimes my presentation is in the middle of a congess so we are sharing the projector and I have to calibrate from my computer not from the projector for color and others....so I will love to have alll the different profiles from alll the different projectors......

Hi Petyer-2, welcome to the forum.
Chances are it's one or more color-management issues (having to do with profiles, monitor setup, etc.)
Are you printing yourself or sending the images out?
If the former, what color-management settings are you choosing in the Photoshop Print dialog?
If the latter, what color profile are you saving the images in that you're sending out for printing?  What does the lab want?
Is your monitor calibrated and profiled?  What profile is associated with the monitor?
Feel free to put a representative image up here if you'd like a judgment on whether the image itself is garish/exaggerated.

  • Optimal Video Settings for Projectors

    Hi Guys,
Really need your help on this one. My goal is to find the
optimal video format, data-rate and frame-rate to import 2-3 min
video pieces into director. I have the latest versions of Director
    and Sorensen.
The projector size is 1000 x 700 pixels to be distributed on
    dvd.
The original video files are mixed formats. I have some 640 x
425 AVI CAD movies, some DV movies at NTSC resolution and some 720
x 540 QTVR files converted to .avi.
The file types I am testing at the moment are SWF and
QUICKTIME .MOV, with mixed results on different systems. The best
results so far are from converting to SWF at 2500 kbps with 25 fps
keeping original size. I am then stretching the movies in director
    to fit 1000 x 670.
Ideally I would like each movie to play back at a setting of
1000 x 670 inside the projector, so that I can add movie controls
at the bottom of the projector.
Can anyone point me in the right direction? Am I doing
something wrong here or is this the reality of using Director for
what I am trying to acheive. I seem to be spending hours trying
various formats and data-rates but with very average performance.

...doesn't really sound like a Lingo question but maybe
    someone can help.

  • I bought a mini DVI to HDMI convertor and  a HDMI to VGA cable to connect my mac book pro to a tv but it doesn't work any one can help.\\\\\

i bought a mini DVI to HDMI convertor and  a HDMI to VGA cable to connect my mac book pro to a tv but it doesn't work any one can help.

I would suggest looking into a Thunderbolt to HDMI connector. In this case, you may be able to use the TV as an external monitor. For this option, please confirm through additional research. I have not tested it personally.
You can also use an Apple TV, which connects with HDMI. In this case, you can use Airplay Mirroring. Not all Macs support Airplay Mirroring, so you need to check first. I have a Mid-2011 27" iMac, and it supports Airplay Mirroring. I don't use it often because my TV is in another room, but I just tried it and it worked. It had to change the screen resolution to work well, so I don't know if I would want to use it as my day to day monitor. http://support.apple.com/kb/ht5404

  • Satellite A205: Dynadock - How to connect to LCD TV with HDMI to DVI cable

I recently purchased this product and had a problem when connecting it to my LCD TV.
I used a HDMI to DVI cable to connect it to the TV. Only a small portion of the full display shows on the TV.
I have adjusted all setting on the laptop (Satellite A205) but it only adjusts the laptop screen, not the TV.
I also used the adaptor to VGA, plugged it into the computer input on TV, same effect. I can use VGA output on side of laptop to TV ok.
Any ideas on how to adjust dynadock output settings?

First of all it would be interesting to know what dynadock you have exactly; one with DVI port or one with VGA port?
    >I have adjusted all setting on the laptop (Satellite A205) but it only adjusts the laptop screen, not the TV.
You should know that the dynadock has a own built-in graphics controller and video drivers to control the video stream.
Therefore you should change the settings directly in the dynadock settings and not on the laptop!!!

  • Does HP 2311gt (QJ684AA) support HDMI 1.4a cable ?

i am going to buy a HP 2311gt 3D Monitor, but i am not sure whether it support  HDMI 1.4a cable. because i found out that 3D content need HDMI 1.4a  cable for batter picture quality or it doesn't mean any thing whether it 1.3b or 1.4a, all the cables are the same. As far as i know my Nvidia GTX 660ti do support 3D an it compatable with HDMI 1.4a.
    This question was solved.
    View Solution.

In theory, you will need a minimum of a HDMI v1.4 cable to support 3D content. If you get a v1.4a or v1.4b cable you shouldn't have any issues. I would suggest getting a v1.4b cable as it is the most current version and supports the most formats.

  • I need recovery for laptop Pavilion dv6-1235ee

I need recovery for laptop Pavilion dv6-1235ee , I need the link for the recovery or send recovery cd to my mail

If you have the recovery partition intact on your notebook, you can just press F11 during boot and it will take you to the recovery mode. Just follow the instructions to perform a recovery and it will reset your notebook back to the factory settings.
In case you do not have the recovery partiion, I would advise you to go through the following document which will help you resolve the issue:

  • I have an Retina display MacBook Pro with HMDI out port. I also have an HDMI to Component cable with Audio Plugs. How can I get HDMI out to work with this cable when plugged into the Component and Audio ports on my TV?

I have an Retina display MacBook Pro with HMDI out port. I also have an HDMI to Component cable with Audio Plugs. How can I get HDMI out to work with this cable when plugged into the MacBook Pro and connected to the TVs Component and Audio in ports.

Will not work.  To my knowledge, dual converting like that isn't supported.  The Mac must detect the connected video output device and that sort of info cannot be done across an analog component uni-directional connection.

  • Is it possible to change proxy settings for all profiles that´s created instead of the standard options. We need to change "use systems proxy" into "automatic"

    Proxy Problems
We need to be able to change the default settings for the proxy for all profiles on our computers that´s created for new users.
Standard is that firefox takes the option "use the system options" for the proxy. We would like it to use the option "automatic" instead like IE and Chrome does.
Considering that we have over 500 computers doing this manually isn´t an option, because a new profile is created everytime someone logs on to a computer they haven´t used before.

You can use a mozilla.cfg file in the Firefox program folder to lock prefs or specify new default values.
Place a file local-settings.js in the defaultspref folder where you also find the file channel-prefs.js to specify using mozilla.cfg.
    pref("general.config.filename", "mozilla.cfg");
    pref("general.config.obscure_value", 0); // use this to disable the byte-shift
    See:
You can use these functions in mozilla.cfg:
defaultPref(); // set new default value
pref(); // set pref, but allow changes in current session
lockPref(); // lock pref, disallow changes
This will work for all existing and newly created profiles.

  • HDMI 2 DVI cable -- can get 1080p...sometimes

I have a Westinghouse LVM42W2 1080p monitor. When I plug Apple TV into the HDMI input, I have an option for 1080p resolution (along with several others), but when I use an HDMI-->DVI cable I just have a choice between 1080i vs 720p.
However, if I first connect the Apple TV to the monitor with the HDMI-->HDMI cable, set the resolution to 1080p then change the cable to HDMI-->DVI, there is a new option for "1920x1080p - 60Hz" selected along with 1080i and 720p. I checked the monitor and Apple TV is broadcasting in 1080p.
Now if I change the resolution to 1080i, the option for 1080p disappears. So I can't really use 1080p with the HDMI-->DVI cable.
    Any thoughts?

I wouldn't worry too much about the i (interlaced)/p (progressive) distinction as that indicates the type of scan, the resolution is still 1080. It may be that using an HDMI-->DVI cable throws off the signal sensing either on the ATV or your TV. Ultimately, if the picture quality is good, there's nothing to fret over.
