HP Pavilion no longer plays stereo

I have a Pavilion a206x desktop PCc with Windows XP Home Edition for the OS, with Realtek AC97 Audio.  The PC was purchase in 2001 or 2002.  A serious infection recently required a complete recovery of the system.  Prior to the system recovery I was able to play CDs/DVDs and listen in stereo.  Since the recovery, I have no sound from the right speakers or from the right side of stereo headset.  I have recently downoladed and installed/updated the drivers for Realtek AC97 Audio for Windows XP.  That did not solve the problem.  There is still no sound from the right speakers or right side of the headset.
I would appreciate any suggestions as to what the problem might be and how to correct it.
Thanks for any help.
Rob

Rob, welcome to the forum.
Have you checked in the Control Panel to assure that all of the settings are correct?  When I have sound problems, this is the first place that I check.  I don't understand how the settings can change by themselves, but they sometimes do.

  • Movies no longer play in iTunes or ATV

I installed the software update for iTunes 11.1.5.5 and now movies (m4v from Handbrake) stored on my PC no longer play in iTunes or Apple TV. These have been playing fine for years, so I'm guessing that 11.1.5.5 has something in it that suddenly doesn't like this format anymore. I can still see my whole library in ATV, covers and all, but when I hit play, I just get the spinning icon. In iTunes, it's just a black screen with the timer staying at zero. Music still plays fine on both devices. I'm frustrated at myself to no end for installing the update. As well, I cannot fine a single complaint of this same issue. I'm hoping that might be because there's a simple fix (long shot I know). Anyone else having issues? Any ideas? Please remember that this file format has been playing without issue for years, so please don't suggest that I change the format unless you know for sure that is a new concern with playback. Thank you.

Well, in case anyone is reading this and willing to offer ideas, I did uninstall iTunes 11.1.5.5 and re-installed the last full version I had saved 11.1.1.11 (not really sure of the last version I was on before everything stopped working). Nothing was lost during the re-install (all libraries, playlists and such are still as they were....I was expecting this not to be the case). However, this process didn't change the video playback problem. I'm at a loss of what this could be. I went through the audio issues mentioned on another thread and did the recommendations, with no change. I did manage to find a few videos that still do play. The only difference I could see is that they are listed as "low complexity" and in stereo. I suppose it probably is an audio thing, though I have no idea why it's an issue now, when it never has been in the past. Please help. Thank you.

  • My iphone no longer plays music on intempo rdi

    Hi
Since the latest IOS update my iphone no longer plays music on intempo rdi dock

I too am having the same problem. I have an Infiniti 2010 G37 and have always used an apple cord to connect either my iphone 3GS or my 4th generation Nano to the usb port in my car. It used to allow me then to access all my music through my built in nav/stereo system. Since last update, I get message that says this device is not supported

  • ITunes 11.3 no longer plays AC-3 surround sound / audio.

I run iTunes in Windows, and upon updating to 11.3, the surround sound option (AC-3) no longer plays audio. Stereo works fine, but no surround sound plays at all. It worked in 11.2, but when upgrading to 11.3 it no longer works.
Possibly related: even in 11.2 it would work "inconsistently", meaning sometimes I would select the surround option and iTunes would either freeze or the sound would not play. 11.3 it won't work at all
    Help?

I have had this same issue, and my problems started about the same time (three weeks ago). When I started experiencing the program I updated to the latest version of QuickTIme, but it has not helped the problem. Seems I have no audio on MPEG1 files. I can open them in iTunes and they play fine. QuickTime doesn't even show that there's an audio file when I look up movie properties. GeneLC65, have you found any solutions yet?
Oh, also the audio files embedded in Director presentation files are broken. Anyone got a clue on this?

  • Design flaw in 'Play stereo audio as mono' of Universal Access Hearing-tab

The option to 'play stereo audio as mono' that comes with OSX 10.6 does not work as I expected.
When I enable this option it sounds like only one of the two channels becomes mono, while the other one does not sound mono to me.
It's hard to notice this, because the total sound does change to 'less' stereo.
I've done some testing with different soundcards and testing signals, and found out that when the option is enabled, the mono signals are routed incorrect.
While the right channel becomes mono, the left channel seems to be something else; I'm not sure if it's the original left channel of the stereo signal, though.
I have reason to believe that the resulting mono sound on the right channel correctly is the 'monofied original sound', but that from the left channel.
The resulting mono sound on the left channel sounds like the original left channel of the stereo sound, maybe added with the mono sound of the right channel.
Why do I think so? When using a sound card with more than two outputs, I can clearly see that sound is being sent to the second and the THIRD output, instead of the first and the second output, immediately after I enable mono. Resulting in output on THREE channels:
    original left
    monofied (left)
    monofied (right)
On my soundcard I can disable the extra outputs, and than I hear:
original left + maybe monofied right
    monofied (left)
    I think the programmer of this great feature made an 'off-by-one error', consequently sending the monified output to the wrong channels;
    to channel[1] + channel[2] instead of channel[0] + channel[1]
I don't know what happens to sound that is sent to channel[2] (the third channel) on a two channel soundcard.
It could be mapped to the the first channel, but that of course is speculation. Could be tested though, with the right audio signal.
I hope someone can confirm this. If more people experience this problem, maybe Apple can fix this so I can enjoy listening in mono.
I have tested this on the internal soundcard and three external firewire audio interfaces, of which 2 have 8+ output channels.
    Thanks!

    Thanks for the quick-and-dirty test.
Your findings are not a surprise to me.
It would be more interesting though to not use one's ears for proof.
Also, I have reason to believe that this result is valid for any two channel audio interface.
With the test below I can proof that audio is sent to three channels instead of just two, when enabling "Play stereo audio as mono" on an(y) audio interface with more than two outputs (enabled).
The test takes a little longer than the quick-and-dirty test.
If you don't have an audio interface with more than two channels of output, you can still perform the test by installing Soundflower first.
Soundflower is a virtual audio interface with multiple inputs and outputs, and can be used as an audio router or audio patchbay.
    Get Soundflower from http://code.google.com/p/soundflower/ - it's free.
    Here's the test …
Open System Preferences, choose the Sound prefpane and select the Output-tab
Select any audio interface with more than two channels of audio outputs as your sound output device ( Or use "Soundflower (16ch)" )
    Keep the System Preferences open
    Start Garageband
    Create a new project
From Preferences select for Audio Input your interface-with-more-than-two-channels-of-audio ( Or use "Soundflower (16ch)" )
( selecting an Audio Output is not necessary, because we're not actually going to use our ears for proof )
Enable multitrack recording from the menu (Track / Enable multitrack recording )
Create four tracks as "Real instrument"; each one with an increasing Input Source: Mono 1, Mono 2, Mono 3, Mono 4
( the last one is just for verification )
Enable recording on these four tracks (if you can't select more than one, try enabling multitrack recording)
Open System Preferences, choose Universal Access (probably click 'Show All' first) and select the Hearing-tab
Make sure audio is played in stereo (unchecking the checkbox)
    Keep the System Preferences open
Switch to the Finder or iTunes
    Playback any song
Switch back to Garageband and check the meters on the individual tracks
( remember this is stereo, notice the number of channels with signal )
Switch back to System Preferences to enable mono (on the Universal Access prefpane)
Switch back to Garageband and check the meters on the individual tracks ( this is mono ! )
    End of test ...
You will see that in mono a third audio channel is addressed, while there should have been only two in both mono and stereo.
The signal strength of channels 2 + 3 seem equal, and channel 1 looks much louder.
This difference in signal strength is very noticable when listening to channels 1 and 2 on separate speakers or headphone.
What is that playing on channel 3?
I must admit (against my original post) that this test does not proof that the signal on channel 1 is or is not mono or anything else; that requires another test.
One can of course record these channels and do some comparisons and subtractions or some other clever tricks.
Hope anyone can second this, preferably with an actual audio interface like Apogee Ensemble, Motu, RME, Presonus, Focusrite, etc.

  • ITunes no longer plays any music.

my iTunes that I use at work on Windows no longer plays music. I double click a song and nothing happens. I hit play and nothing happens. Even when I go into the music through iTunes, I double click a demo song and nothing happens.
So I reinstalled iTunes and have the same problem still. So unless anybody has a troubleshoot for this. I'll be looking for another music application to set up my music in.

    I'm having a similar problem.
When I click to play some of my purchased songs, it just skips right over it. But, it increases the "Play Count" column value by 1 each time, even though it doesn't play anything.
Of the $50 worth of music that I just bought today, only 2 songs seem to be working. The "Play Count" column is blank for these songs. And I think these are songs that I bought without previewing them first.
Maybe if you buy a song WHILE previewing it, it will cause this bug? /shrug

Here I come to save the daaaaaaaaaay!!!
Had the same issue with my Nissan Rogue 2011.
This listed below will fix it...
Go to General > Restrictions > CarPlay -- Make sure Carplay is DISABLED. (The new IOS 8 enables this on default)
Go to General > Reset > Reset Network Settings
The Nissan Rogue radio system was never designed to work with CarPlay. By default, CarPlay feature comes enabled when you install IOS 8. Suckz, right?
You're very welcome! Have a great day!

  • My 5th gen iPod no longer plays songs that I bought from iTunes

After updating my iPod's software, the setting on it were erased so that everything was in sync with the computer. Not realizing this I found that all of the music on my iPod had to be re-uploaded onto my iPod. However the music and videos that I purchased no longer play despite being listed on the iPod. Can someone please help I've run out of options.

  • Can no longer play music that I previously purchased

After performing the iTunes and Quicktime upgrades last night, I discovered today that I can no longer play songs that I previously downloaded from the music store. I also cannot preview any songs in the music store, and I'm assuming that if I actually tried to purchase a song that it also wouldn't work. When I try to play a song from my iTunes library that I previously purchased, a window comes up saying that "this computer is not authorized to play this song" and requires me to enter my password. After I do that, it generally comes up with a message saying that machine authorization is successful, and that I have 2 machines authorized, although it requires me to do this every time I try a different song. After the supposed successful authorization, it starts "accessing the music store" (which makes no sense to me since these songs have been in my own library for over a year) and ultimately comes back with different error messages, including "We couldn't complete your music store request...The music store is temporarily unavailable" or just simply "there was an error in the music store" or "an unknown error occurred." The error numbers vary - 5555, 403, etc. Why is it even trying to access the music store when these are songs that are sitting in my own library?! Now iTunes is simply closing unexpectedly. I know I'm not the only one (to say the least) having problems, and I hope someone figures it out soon since we all have hundreds of dollars worth of music on our computers that we can't listen to. Unfortunately, I plugged my iPod in today to update it, and I'm scared to even find out what's been erased from it.

    Alli hello,
    Quit iTunes...
Download Cocktail and start the program... click on the 'interface' Icon and tick 'Show Invisible Items' then click the Restart button...
In a finder window click on the Icon that is your Boot Volume in the Side Bar ... select users ... select shared folder ... select the folder named 'SC info' and put it in the trash and empty it ... Do Not touch any other file.
Pathway looks like this HD > users > shared > SC info > SC Info.sidb
Go back to the Cocktail 'interface' window and untick Show Invisible Items and click restart .. quit Cocktail.
Start iTunes after deletinng this folder and it will prompt you to enter your authorization information again ... see now if your problem still exists...

Welcome to the  discussion forums.
Try going to synching in the sources menu on your tv and selecting 'change itunes library', when it gives you the passcode check itunes to see if the tv is showing up as a new device, if so try entering the pass code. It may be that your tv is seeing itunes as a different library because of a recent upgrade.
