HP Pavilion P6 2120 says - Failing drive

My Pavilion P6 2120 is only 18 months old. This morning I got the message:  1720-SMART Hard Drive detects imminent failure   Failing Drive: SATA1   Failing Attribute: #05
I'm running Windows 7. This is a home system.   I'm at a loss as to what is happening and why, and what needs to be done.
Any help?
Thanks
Ann Marie

Well... with mechanical hard drives, unfortunately, it is a possibility. HP does try hard to use hard drives from manufacturers with the best track records and lowest rates of failures... probably the best in the biz when it comes to mass produced PCs, but hard drives (and optical drives) DO fail. Because they have platters that spin at extrememely high revolutions, they will eventually fail. Hard drive and optional drives and CPUs are a good reason to purchase extended warranties for PCs...especially notebook PCs. This is just advice...I agree with you it sucks. I've worked with about 50 PCs over the last 20 years - I've had drives last 1 month and some lasted 12 years plus.

Please post rather than send me a Message. It's good for the community and I might not be able to get back quickly. - Thank you.

  • S.M.A.R.T. Says 'hard drive is failing' - how to wipe?

As the title says - S.M.A.R.T. says one of my internal hard drives is failing,
and then prevents me from highlighting it to repair or erase.
I have successfully copied the hard drive to a new drive, but how do I now
    wipe the failing drive?

Are you trying to do this while booted from the OS or from the install Disk? If your booted into the OS then the repair option shouldn't be click-able. Beyond that, there might be some 3rd party software that could force a reformat and/or erase. I did try to find you something but didn't come across anything specific to what your trying to do. You probably already know this, but the purpose of S.M.A.R.T. is it acts as an early warning indicator. This means the drive is no longer dependable and may fail without warning in the near future, resulting in losing all data. With that being said, I've used a hard drive that S.M.A.R.T. indicated was failing for 3+ years without a hick-up. I don't use it for anything imported though. When I have more time and if I come across anything that might get the job down, I will add to this posting. The worst case scenario is that there is no way to reformat and/or erase the drive due to the state it's in. At that point, the only thing left to do is recycling the drive.

My sisters MacBook (Late 2006) HDD has failed. I have a spare drive that I would like to install OS X onto to replace the failed drive. Whats the best way to do this and which version of OS is best to install for this model MacBook?

Hello, it'd be best to use the Original Install Disc while booting the MacBook from it, but a Retail 10.6 Install Disc may work...
    Snow Leopard/10.6.x Requirements...
    General requirements
       * Mac computer with an Intel processor

  • Facetime stopped working on mac. says "failed".  works fine on phone and new mini.  Any ideas.  already went thru all the troubleshooting. added a unique email address to the mac.  just keeps failing. ????

facetime stopped working on mad.  says "failed".  works fine on phone and new mini.  tried all the troubleshooting, added a unique email to the mac facetime, nothing seems to work.  just keeps saying "facetime failed".  any ideas???

I Got the same problem. When you change the output to internal speakers again facetime works again in the mac.
I think it may be some kind of incompatibility with the current driver. I used in the past the old tascam Us-122 and worked well but its driver don't work more for the mountain lion system so i bought this newest one.
When i used the old one I could use the volume keys on the mac keyboard to control output volume; now with the us-322 when hearing music you can control volume just from the tascam.

I would say to start by looking on their web site... unfortunately, that appears to be dead.
Based on the horrible ratings on the App Store (1 star for the current version), I'm not surprised it doesn't work well.

  • How to recover data from failed drive that's part of mirrored raid

    Hi Guys,
hope to get help from someone knowledgeable out there. I have a macpro and recently experienced a failed drive. I set up that failed drive as part of a mirrored raid, this set is not my primary drive and so my computer is stilling up and running but now am wondering how I access the data from the mirrored drive. Should the mirrored drive automatically mount on my desktop whereby I would be able to access the files? This is my first drive failure and I was under the impression having a mirror would duplicate my data and allow me to access it in situations like this. I'm a bit of novice in this area and not sure if the data is truly on the "mirror" or if there are things I need to do.
I launched disk utility and was able to see the mirrored drive and I selected "mount" drive but it would not mount; I then selected "verify" and got "unrecognizeable filesystem" Is this normal? Am I suppose do something to get access to the mirrored drive? Do I install a new drive in place of the failed drive and expect the raid to rebuild automatically whereby I then see the data?
    Your help is much appreciated.

Even with a mirror, you still need a backup.
Along with Disk Utility, you still need 3rd party (TechTool Pro 5, Disk Warrior 4.1.1+).
And if you like to use RAID and esp mirror RAID, consider
http://www.softraid.com which is a step above (the pdf guide, manual you can download and they have a demo, so worth the read). SoftRAID can also import/convert an Apple RAID to its own format which has been known to recover drives and data.

  • Fingerprint reader not working in IE and saying failed to connect to sensor

    Hi all,
I bought a Qosmio x500 10t a couple of months back. For the first couple of weeks i had no probs using the fingerprint reader to log in to windows and to log in to websites in Internet exploer.
All of a sudden it would not work on any website stored. The green banner showed accross the top of site and asked to swipe finger but nothing happened when I swiped. I rebooted and it worked again but not for long before failing. This time a reboot didnt work so i deleted my finger prints and websites and started from scratch. That worked for a couple of attempts before probs started again. And on trying to get into Fingerprint utility it says failure to connect to sensor. So, I did a system restore. It worked for a couple of times again and then same probs. So I found the updated utility software, uninstalled the old and put on the new. Same again, worked for a couple of times then failed.
I could not find anything stuck in the registry but to be on the safe side i did a full system clean back to factory setup using backup discs. Hey presto i thought it had worked. Everything going ok for first 24hrs and then same problems start to occur. Only this time it is also prompting me to enroll fingerprints even though i already have. And when i try to get into the utilioty it says failed to read sensor again.
The fingerprint log on to windows always works as long as i dont close the fingerprint utility down before shutting down. If i do exit the utilty i cant reopen it as it just says failed to connect to sensor. And then i have to unistall and reinstall the utility software. Aty the moment it occasionally works on websites stored but most of the time it doesnt do anything.
Please help. Do I need to send laptop back to Toshiba??

    Hi,
*I got a solution* for the problem that the fingerprint sensor "suddenly" does not work any more.
When starting the Toshiba Fingerprint Utility, it says "failed to connect to fingerprint sensor".
Is it possible that just before it stopped working there was a new firewall installed, or firewall settings had been changed?
*In my case, the problem was solved by changing my firewall settings* (Windows 7 Firewall Control) to ALLOW all traffic for
the Authentec Fingerprint Sensor Service (AFSS). It is the file "AtService.exe" in C:\Program files
    The reason is simple:
The Toshiba Fingerprint utility communicates with the fingerprint sensor service via TCP/IP.
Therefore, any firewall that blocks traffic on the local computer will block the communication.
*After changing my firewall settings, fingerprint sensor works* on my R700 flawlessly now.

  • SMART Utility Says "Failing"

My 12" powerbook Aluminum was refusing to shut down--meaning I couldn't clone it to my external. So I ran SMART Utility. It found Pending Bad Sectors: 2, Reallocated Bad Sectors: 3, Total Errors 30, and Last Error Type: Uncorrectable.
So I ordered a new drive. Everytime I try to clone my current drive to my external it bumps up against some file it fails to copy. The first couple of times these were Adobe Files. So I removede CS2 from the computer (a lengthy process), ran Applejack, and tried again. This is the error message I get from SuperDuper: WARNING: Caught I/O exception(22): Invalid argument
    | 11:32:39 PM | Info |WARNING: Source: /private/var/log/system.log, lstat(): 0

    | 11:32:39 PM | Info |Attempting to copy file using ditto.
    | 11:32:39 PM | Error | ditto: /private/var/log/./system.log: Result too large
So I have a new hard drive to install, but I can't clone my old one. I'd really like to shorten this process as much as possible as I've been having weeks of computer **** (three laptops, two failing hard drives and a bad memory card spread out over all three).
Question: How do I clone this drive? And 2) If I DO successfully clone it, am I just cloning the problems I'm trying to rectify?
    Please help.
    Cheers,
    Giles

    Giles:
I would like to copy my applications over from my old failing drive but I don't want to copy any corruption. Can you please advise what is the best way to do this?
If there is an issue with the files and apps on the drive there may be concern about it. However, if the files and apps were not having issues, and it is simply a matter of the HDD itself failing, there should not be an issue with moving them over. Then later, if you find there are issues you can simply reinstall the problem apps.
Or should I just bite the bullet and reinstall from scratch?
That is certainly an option. However, as I noted above, you may not need to do so up front.
Even if I reinstall from scratch, can I safely copy my user data (preferences, bookmarks, etc) for Safari and Entourage?
Yes, you can. I suggest that you use the schedule laid out in the article A Basic Guide for Migrating to Intel-Macs. I realize that you are working with PowerPC Macs, but you need the same stuff moved. It works very well. I would be sure to test the drive to which you have copied before deleting the old stuff.
    Good luck.

  • Intel raid, find the failing (but not failed) drive?

One of my two Seagate drives is failing, I get intermittent system 'hangs', drive clicking, and the following error in event viewer:
    Quote
"The device, \Device\Ide\iaStor0, did not respond within the timeout period.
When I built the system I created two volumes from my two hard drives.  The first volume is a Raid 1 mirror set for my root drive.  The  second volume is a raid 0 stripe for my non-important stuff.  The two volumes are named "Root_Mirror" and "Data_Stripe"
Here's the problem, How do I know which drive is on its way out?  I believe the event viewer error is complaining about the mirrored volume set (iaStor0 = "Root_Mirror" volume?), but how do I prove this?  (I am correct in thinking that WinXP talks to the Intel raid controller, the raid controller talks to the hard drives.  Consequently WinXP can only report errors about the raid volume, not the underlying physical hardware.
I have a strong background in unix (Sun Solaris) disk and volume management.  If this was a work machine, I'd run an "iostat -En" look at the error count for each device, then determine which lun was having problems.  Once I know which lun is in trouble, I'd run a health check on the lun via the array management software (RM6 or whatever).  I don't see these tools in WinXP or the Intel Matrix driver...
Here is a system report from the Intel Matrix storage console if it helps:

Well, I found a way to identify a failing drive, but it is not pretty..
    download Seagate's "Seatools"
    burn Seatools to bootable cd
go into bios / Integrated peripherals / on-chip ATA devices / change from "raid" to "ide"
    F11 boot to cdrom
run Seatools quick check to almost instantly identify the failing drive.
run Seatools extended test to find a whole SLEW of failed sectors   :shocking:
reboot back into bios, Integrated peripherals / on-chip ATA devices / change back to "raid" (pray this won't blow away your data, which it didn't but you don't know that until you do it once
setup RMA refund thru Newegg, order replacement drive, and hope new drive makes it before old drive goes belly up.
while patiently waiting for new drive, sit in amazement that the Intel matrix driver ignores all the errors that Seatools found in a matter of seconds..
Here's a question.  Should I be pissed that the Intel raid controller isn't reporting a bunch of errors, or should I be excited that the Intel raid contorller can keep a raid 0 stripe functioning with a clearly failing disk drive. (is it a bug or a feature????)
    {sigh}

  • My mac air says hard drive full and 90% is full of 'other' which I cant work out what 'other' is as i Have transferred most to my external hard drive

My mac air says hard drive full and 90% is full of 'other' which I cant work out what 'other' is as i Have transferred most to my external hard drive.
Do you know how I can tell how large each file is taking up and what my 'other' category could be?
    thanks

Initial easy steps to gain disk space:
    - Delete all files in the Downloads folder.
      Empty the Trash.
    - Start iPhoto.
      Empty its trash.
      Restart.
    Backup:
Run a Time Machine (or other) backup since you are about to delete and move files and you may need to recover from any inadvertent mistakes or decisions.  You will need one external hard drive for your Time Machine (or other) backup and a second if you plan to offload some files.  (See suggestions for where to purchase hard drives at the end of this message.)

Methodology to protect your data.  Backups vs. Archives.  Long-term data protection:
    https://discussions.apple.com/docs/DOC-6031
    Deleting files:
Then use the free application OmniDiskSweeper http://www.omnigroup.com/more to explore your volume in descending order by size so you can attack the problem from the top down, deleting the largest unwanted files first.  Delete with caution and do not delete any system files.  Remember to empty the trash after trashing the files.
Additional reference on freeing disk space:
    http://pondini.org/OSX/DiskSpace.html
    Offloading files:
Consider moving some of the no-often-used large files or directories to an external disk.  Use ODS again to find them.  This will be at least your second hard drive.  Your first one(s) is/are for your Time Machine (or other) backup(s).  Do not offload files onto a Time Machine disk.
Format the second drive as Mac OS Extended (journaled).  Using OWS to find large files/folders and copy them from the system drive to the external hard drive and delete them from your internal drive.
Then  > System Preferences > Time Machine > Options… > Remove the offload HD name from the exclusions list.
Now both your system disk and your external offload disk will be backed up onto your Time Machine disk.
