HP Pavilion slimline s3400t. DVD/CD will not offer a directory other than e:

The help menu states that I can select other directories, but when I click on the link, the only directory that is offered is my e:\ drive. Is there a fix for this? I am running Windows Vista for Business upgrade 2. Device manager describes my DVD as:
HL-DT-ST DVD-RAM GH10L ATA.

Ah....I see. You are just looking to play the files you copied to your hard drive. You don't really want to change the drive letter. Changing the drive letter would not help you play the files on your hard drive. It would just confuse your computer about where to find your hard drive
What kind of file(s) did you copy to your hard drive? Was it a DVD movie? Was it some personal files (like Microsoft Office documents or pictures)?
What DVD software are you trying to use to open the files?
Have you tried navigating to the files you copied and opening them by double-clicking on them?

Just purchased this laptop, initial thought it was a great improvement on my 3 year old Aspire!!! Latest problem after doing a complete scan with McAfee is the touchpad or remote will move the cursor but will not open any programmes other than McAfee. This procedure is a diagnostic test. It’s unlikely to solve your problem. Don’t be disappointed when you find that nothing has changed after you complete it.
The purpose of the test is to determine whether the problem is caused by third-party software that loads automatically at startup or login, by a peripheral device, by a font conflict, or by corruption of the file system or of certain system caches.
Disconnect all wired peripherals except those needed for the test, and remove all aftermarket expansion cards, if applicable. Start up in safe mode and log in to the account with the problem. You must hold down the shift key twice: once when you turn on the computer, and again when you log in.
Note: If FileVault is enabled, or if a firmware password is set, or if the startup volume is a Fusion Drive or a software RAID, you can’t do this. Ask for further instructions.
Safe mode is much slower to start up and run than normal, with limited graphics performance, and some things won’t work at all, including sound output and Wi-Fi on certain models. The next normal startup may also be somewhat slow.
The login screen appears even if you usually login automatically. You must know your login password in order to log in. If you’ve forgotten the password, you will need to reset it before you begin.
Test while in safe mode. Same problem?
After testing, restart as usual (not in safe mode) and verify that you still have the problem. Post the results of the test.

Updated my HP Laptop to Windows 8 and now DVD driver will not work. Help!

I have a Hp Pavilion dv-7013cl Entertainment PC and everything was working perfectly. I updated to Windows 8 about a month ago and had some problems. I then did a clean install of Windows 8 and now all the bugs are fixed except my DVD drive will not work.
I insert a DVD or CD and nothing happens. I go to My Computer and click on it and it just ejects the DVD. I don't know what to do and need my DVD drive.
Also, I tried to go to device manager and reinstall the driver but that didn't help.

Some DVD's will not play.

Three of my commercial DVD's will not play on my Powerbook. Almost all of my DVD's do. These three will play on my wife's Sony laptop and on my Panasonic DVD Player/Recorder. However, the Apple DVD player either fails to read or starts up the program and fails uppon entering the main menu. I get either a DVD fayal read error or an error message that state the DVD's may be scratched or damaged (which they're not). Any one else having this problem? Also, is it a software or hardware problem or both?

Hello selinahillier, Many times when this happens the DVD laser has become faulty. I have removed the DVD drive, and the DVD drive case, and used a soft cloth and some cleaning solution to clean the DVD Laser and managed to get the DVD working again.
Since DVD drives are as inexpensive as they are now, it might be best to just purchase a new one.
These can be purchased for less than $20.00 USD now.

Thank you. I did find the problem - i'm running Windows 7 through Parallels and i need to Diconnect th CD drive within Windows to let the keyboard eject button work properly.

DVD Drive will not recognize any movie DVD disk in the drive - thus will not play any dvd movies.

HP G71 449WV dvd drive will not recognize any dvd disc that has a movie on it. Will not play movies, keeps saying to insert disc when there is a disc in there. It will recognize a dvd data disc or a blank dvd, it just will not recognize any dvd movies. I've tried the microsoft fix it, downloaded new codecs, using different dvd playback software but none of that works since the drive will not recognize there is even a dvd movie in the drive. Computer is out of warranty.

It appears that you're not able to play movie DVD's in the DVD player in your notebook. I will try to assist you with this.

Also, are these purchased DVD's or burnt DVD's?
Do the movies play in other sources? (DVD player, other PC)

Please dont be mad on me but in your posting there is no question or something just small report that DVD drive will not play DVDs.
Anyway, if I am remembering well your unit is about 2 years old and has probably DVD-CDRW (Combo) drive. In my opinion there is no much to do. If the drive has problem with original DVDs I presume that there is laser calibrations problem and the device must be replaced.
I dont know how old is your unit exactly but please check if the warranty is still valid. If yes contact service partner in your country immediately. The drive should be replaced for free. If not you must replaced it on your own. If the drive replacement costs too much I recommend you to use external device (I do it with my old Satellite). On this way I can use newest and very fast super multi DL devices and also create own DVDs.
You can also try to find already used DVD/CD-RW drive and replace it alone. If you need assistance by replacement please write again.
Once again, dont be mad on me. I am ready to write my opinion but it is really annoying when someone write just one sentence and nothing more.

My CD/DVD drive will not open when I insert any type CD/DVD. The CD/DVD just runs but will not open.

Try cleaning the lens:
Use a DVD lens cleaning disk.
Use a few shots of compressed air in the slot.
Wrap a fine microfiber cloth (eyeglasses cleaning cloth?) around a business card and gently insert it in the slot.
If no success, a trip to the genius bar at an Apple store is the best option.

Usually if you have some kind of hardware failure there is some beeping during POST or most motherboards now have LED indicators to produce and error message based on the type of failure
So if its bad memory, not place properly, mismatched, processor not inserted properly, mismatched voltage or voltage connector not present etc it beeps or generates the error id.
Power supplies can be tested for failure. There are some walk throughs for testing just them with a switch, paperclip or a jumper (I'd suggest not doing this if you are not familiar with the dangers of electricity).
Memory can be tested with memory diagnostics programs like Memtest+
Processors can overheat if the proper precautions have not been taken usually you will get a POST beep or error code for that.
If the motherboard has no response then do the basics first:
Check power connectors and power supply. Once you determine that is not the case move on to other items like graphics cards in all the way or memory.
