HP Pavilion Slimline s3707c does not load past hp screen

loads to hp screen, gives the following choices:
<F10=setup>                          <F11=System Recovery
<Esc=Boot Menu>                 <F9=Diagnostics>
if i choose setup or boot menu it tries to load but does not. the other two do not give me a message.
i tried to load bios screen by using every "f" key, one at a time, each on their own. i even tried del and esc. none loaded bios, just brought me to the hp screen where it never loads.
i made a copy of windows vista recovery disc and tried to boot from it. same issues as before, nothing loads. i opened the case and the processor cooler was very hot to the touch. i used a box fan to see if i could keep it cool but nothing worked. im guessing the processor shifted or is just getting to hot? perhaps i need a new fan?
some things i tried:
ubuntu 10.10 install cd does not read.
windows xp w/sp2 install cd does not read.
vista recovery cd does not read.
so cd's dont read lol
shut off for couple hours to cool off processor and used a box fan to give more cool air through the heat sync. same problem as before.
any ideas? i was told to check the ram one at a time but i dont have the time to pull the heat sync off, then the disc drive to unplug one ram stick.

I had this exact problem after moving my mother-in-law's computer to a new location.
Computer wouldn't get past start up screen. After opening the computer, checking all connectors, etc., I finally bought recovery discs, installed a new hard drive, and............ nothing. Still wouldn't get past start up screen.
THEN I FOUND THE PROBLEM.
On the front of the computer, there is a connector with two USB inputs separated by a chrome strip. In transit, the center strip had been dislocated, and was shorting out one of the USB jacks.
When I realigned the strip so the USB jacks so weren't shorted, the PC started normally. I put the original Hard drive back in, and everything was back to normal.

  • IMac Does not boot past Gray Screen

iMac does not boot past Gray Screen.  2008 24" Intel iMac running Mountain Lion with 1TB hard drive.
Problem started yesterday while I was web surfing, and my iMac frooze and shutdown.  I rebooted and could only get as far as the gray screen.
On bootup the following things happen:
    Startup tone
Gray screen with Apple, and gear spins below Apple.
Once the gear stops spinning, nothing happends.
    Troubleshooting steps I have tried:
removed all devices connected to iMac and rebooted, but same symptons occur.
booted into Safe mode and run disk utilites.
Disk Utilities found no errors on the drive, but did find two permission issues that it was able to fix.
              First permission issue:
"Group differs on library; Should be 0; group is 80"
              Second permission issue:
"Permissons differ on library; Should be drwxr-xr-x; They are drwxrwxr-t"
Disk Utilities says it fixes these issues and then I reboot, but get the same problem.
I reboot back into Safe Mode and run Disk Utilities and it discovers the same problems listed above with Permissions.  It says it fixes them, I reboot, but the same problem occurs.  Its as if we are stuck in some sort of loop process.
Booted into Single User Mode and ran the following command:
/SBin/fsck -fy   it reports back,  Volume Apprears to be ok.
    I reboot, same issue !
Performed SMC Reset, Rebooted, same issue
Performed PRAM Reset, Rebooted, same issue.
Booted into Recovery Partitioin (Command R) and ran disk utilities.  It found the same permission issues listed above.  It fixed them.  I rebooted.  Same problem still.
While in safe mode, I preformed a full time machine backup.
I am out of ideas.  Any help would be greatly appreciated.

    Hello,
I reboot back into Safe Mode and run Disk Utilities and it discovers the same problems listed above with Permissions.
You can ignore repeated "fixes" it's not really a problem, if it says completed repairs that's all that's needed.
Luckily it boots in Safe Mode, here's basically the steps to try to find out what it is...
One way to test is to Safe Boot from the HD, (holding Shift key down at bootup), run Disk Utility in Applications>Utilities, then highlight your drive, click on Repair Permissions, Test for problem in Safe Mode...
PS. Safe boot may stay on the gray radian for a long time, let it go, it's trying to repair the Hard Drive
    Reboot, test again.
If it only does it in Regular Boot, then it could be some hardware problem like Video card, (Quartz is turned off in Safe Mode), or Airport, or some USB or Firewire device, or 3rd party add-on, Check System Preferences>Accounts>Login Items window to see if it or something relevant is listed.
Check the System Preferences>Other Row, for 3rd party Pref Panes.
Also look in these if they exist, some are invisible...
    /private/var/run/StartupItems
    /Library/StartupItems
    /System/Library/StartupItems
    /System/Library/LaunchDaemons
    /Library/LaunchDaemons
Though I'm suspecting some corruption to your OS at the moment.

  • Macbook not loading past white screen. DU not finding HDD, works externaly

    Hello,
My Macbook stopped working recently, it crashed, so I held down power button for it to turn on again.
I did this the next morning and it just would not load past the white screen, I tried turning off and on again with no joy.
I had the circle with a line through it at one point. I tried safe mode and reseting whist holding cmd S, then option cmd P R.
I loaded with the disk in and Disk utility could not find the disk.
I plugged the HDD into a USB adapter and the HDD works fine, I am using it to write this.
What would stop the mac from loading the HDD and cause Disk utility to not find the disk?
Macbook Pro 13.3" 2009. I recently put in 8GB RAM to replace the 4GB. Using Lion since it came out.
    Any help guys?
Sorry if this problem has been posted else where already.

Reinstalling Lion/Mountain Lion Without Erasing the Drive
Boot to the Recovery HD: Restart the computer and after the chime press and hold down the COMMAND and R keys until the menu screen appears. Alternatively, restart the computer and after the chime press and hold down the OPTION key until the boot manager screen appears. Select the Recovery HD and click on the downward pointing arrow button.
Repair the Hard Drive and Permissions: Upon startup select Disk Utility from the main menu. Repair the Hard Drive and Permissions as follows.
When the recovery menu appears select Disk Utility. After DU loads select your hard drive entry (mfgr.'s ID and drive size) from the the left side list.  In the DU status area you will see an entry for the S.M.A.R.T. status of the hard drive.  If it does not say "Verified" then the hard drive is failing or failed. (SMART status is not reported on external Firewire or USB drives.) If the drive is "Verified" then select your OS X volume from the list on the left (sub-entry below the drive entry,) click on the First Aid tab, then click on the Repair Disk button. If DU reports any errors that have been fixed, then re-run Repair Disk until no errors are reported. If no errors are reported click on the Repair Permissions button. Wait until the operation completes, then quit DU and return to the main menu.
Reinstall Lion/Mountain Lion: Select Reinstall Lion/Mountain Lion and click on the Continue button.
Note: You will need an active Internet connection. I suggest using Ethernet if possible because it is three times faster than wireless.

    Hello Beth6871,
Your computer will not load windows.
    Do a hard reset.
    Turn the computer off.
Remove the power cable and the battery.
Hold down the power button for 15 sec while booth power sources are removed.
This should reset the hardware in the computer.
As you power it back on tap the F2 key. This will load hardware diagnostics.
    Run the startup test.
This will test all the hardware in the system and detect any problems.
Let me know how everything goes
    Have a good day.

    Hi,
For your situation, I would like to confirm the following questions:
In my understanding, you replace the hard drive, so you must perform the clean install, right?
Do you have chance to format the disk?
You may need double check if you set the CD boot as the first priority in boot sequence.

  • Macbook not loading past white screen with logo and spinnning wheel?

ok, so basically i have a macbook 10.6.4 Snow Lepoard that is making me want to literally bash its brains out but, unfortunatly i cant because it is owened by the school...
As mentioned in previous posts, my school It dept are incredibly slow and their idea of fixing something is to wipe everthing and reinstall all the programs once again. if that dosent work their other way of fixing something is to send it off to apple. for obveous reasons i want to avoid that.
it ONLY started today, (last night i was happily doing last minuite homework) when its was lagging so much that i did the inevitable, i quit tetris and restarted my computer...
This led to me sitting infront of a white screen and a spinning wheel for the whole lesson. The next lesson i got fed up with waiting and restarted. nothing. I have also notied that my macbook seems to heat up REALLY FAST toward the bottom of the screen (where is says macbook).
    Any suggestions?
    Thanks in advance,
    Favvi

well i went to hand it in today but the fails that we call 'the qualified IT deptarment' (even though they are only two), decided to take the day off. they were supposed to be there recess and lunch but the room was pitch black.
When you say that "you do not need admin rights to perform the different solution", i actually am the admin of the laptop but there is another hidden admin so that they can change any settings in the computer without our passwords.
i have previously tried that whole command letter thing for various other things such as safe mode and starting from the disk and have had no sucess. i dont know if my timing is off or something but it never works. however, i have been able to retrive a disk from the disk drive by pressing the mouse button when it turns on.
this is an exerpt from a previous post:

so im really starting to get annoyed now. I have tried that single user mode start up thing (command + s) after the chime, before the chime, hold it down for a second, hold it down forever BUT IT ALWAYS JUST GOES INTO MY LOGIN SCREEN!!! i cant seem to get around this. I cant get into the 'utilities' from my install disk because it asks for an admin name and password. i am literally tearing my hair out…
    Barney-15E:
That doesn't make any sense. When it boots to the install disk, there is no user to authenticate.
Does it have an Open Firmware password set?
i assumed that this was set. but to be honest i have no freaking idea.
also i was talking to a friend today and she said that she had the same issue and they had to replace the battery. although i have no idead on how the battery could be affecting this?

  • MacBook Pro does not boot past apple screen after replacing hard drive

After replacing hard drive on MacBook Pro 13 inch early 2011 model, the screen only boots to the apple logo.  Do I need to re-install the OS?

The problem is that the OS is not in any where else of the MacBook Pro than in the HD / SSD. If you replace the Hard Drive, then you will need to Re-install OSX into that hard drive, it's pretty easy.
    1) Power up your Macbook Pro, as fast as you can press and hold the Option key (ALT). You'll see that it opens the bootable-devices you have, you'll see a Recovery partition, click it.
(If the Hard Drive contains data do the following)
    2) In the menu select Disk Utility.
    3) In Disk Utility go ahead and select the Hard Drive that is inside the MBP.
    4) Erase the content.
(If the Hard Drive contains no data continue with the following jumping the last 3 steps).
    5) Select Re-install OSX.
    6) Select the Hard Drive in which you want to install it.
Follow the steps of everything else (it should take approximately 1 hour to do the whole thing).
    Hope this helps!
    Later.

  • My Macbook will not load past grey screen with progress bar?

When I start up my computer the grey screen with the Apple and spinning wheel appear, then underneath a progress bar. once the progress bar is full it shuts down? Help!

Welcome to the Apple Support Communities
That bar appears when OS X checks your hard drive, and it's not a good sign that your Mac turns off, because the hard drive is damaged.
Unfortunately, the only thing you can do is to take the Mac to an Apple Store or AASP to get the hard drive repaired. If you didn't make a backup, try DiskWarrior to recover data, and buy an external disk to make backups. All hard drives fail, but we don't know when they are going to fail

  • Plymouth does not load the splash screen on boot

I installed plymouth, plymouth-theme-arch-logo from AUR. then created new initramfs using the 'plymouth-set-default-theme -R' option. On my 'kernel line' I have given 'quiet splash' options.
But when I boot I only get a '%oo' , thrice and the keep glowing alternatively and nothing else happens. I was expecting to see some decent art work. Can anyone help me in this.

I too have had the same problem and haven't been able to get plymouth working properly yet...Currently there are lot of issues related to video drivers as well as stopping issues with plymouth. Also, plymouth works properly only with certain DMs i guess. Which DM are you using? and have you disabled the respective xDM service and enabled xDM-plymouth service?
I was able to get plymouth working with gdm after gnome updated to 3.14. The plymouth service ran properly at boot but wouldn't stop when it was supposed to and thus I would be in a boot loop.
Any help here would be great. Currently I'm using LightDM...Is there a way to get plymouth working with LightDM?

  • After Effects CS6 will no longer load past Splash Screen

Recently been using AE CS6 more frequently. Used it today for about 3-4 hours. Restarted my computer when it started to get slow to free up space from temp/cache files. Now AE does not load past the splash screen when I want to open it. Pauses for a while, then either I get a generic "program has stopped working/responding", or occasionally something else. I have allocated 26 mb of my RAM to Adobe use (only After Effects was open). Media cache files are set to 50 Gb. The program is installed on my 120 Gb SSD, which is out of space. However, all the reference files and media caches are set to go to my HDD, which has 1.5 TerraB's available. Photoshop opens fine and run fines still.
When attempting to open, Sometimes it mentions that the Dynamic Link had an error or was the last thing that was trying to load. Have restarted computer, no change. Please Help, have two projects going that need to be done very soon.
Running Windows 7 Ultimate, AE CS6 through the Master Suite. 32 Gb Ram, Intel i7 processor, EVGA GTX570 Graphic Card. There havent been any updates for anything in a few weeks that I'm aware of.
Really don't want to go through a re-installation...It was working just fine for months, then this.

Manually flushed, reinstalled graphics driver (was a slight update, a few sub sections), and all other drivers in DMan are good to go. Also uninstalled Quicktime and did a fresh install of that too. Still no good. The exact error message is this:
After Effects error: Crash in progress. Last logged message was <6032>
    <DynamicLink><5> C:\Program Files (x86)\Common Files\Adobe\dynamiclink\CS6\dynamiclinkmanager.exe
Also, checked firewall settings - nothing shows up as blocked, although I could be not looking at it right. Running McAfee OAS.

    Hi wjackson95,
When you get to the screen mentioned below, can you press the F11 key to enter the Recovery system that is on the hard drive? Alternatively, if you can press F10, you can go into the BIOS and change your boot order to put your disc drive before the hard drive so that the PC boots to your Recovery discs. NOTE: You may have to press F10 or F11 multiple times to get it at the right time.
You might consider opening your PC to see if it has dust buildup. If your PC has overheated, it can cause it to not boot. It can also cause heat damage to the interal parts.

It could be the hardrive or anything really i just need to get it working. Alot of important things that need to be done using this computer and i am freaking out.
My computer suddenly decides not to work and turns on but does not go past the grey apple screen with the loading wheel.. it will not go to my desktop. What should i do?

Put your install DVD into the optical drive (CD/DVD drive) and reboot. Be sure to either use the disc that came with your Mac, or, if you installed a later Mac OS X version from disc, use the newer disc. As soon as you hear the boot chime, hold down the "c" key on your keyboard (or the Option Key until the Install Disk shows up) until the apple shows up. That will force your MacBook to boot from the install DVD in the optical drive.
Or if you are running 10.7 Lion, boot from the recovery partition (Command +R on boot) and use Disk Utility to repair your OS 10.7 partition.
When it does start up, you'll see a panel asking you to choose your language. Choose your language and press the Return key on your keyboard once. It will then present you with an Installation window. Completely ignore this window and click on Utilities in the top menu and scroll down to Disk Utility and click it. When it comes up is your Hard Drive in the list on the left?
If it is, then click on the Mac OS partition of your hard drive in the left hand list. Then select the First Aid Tab and run Repair Disk. The Repair Disk button won't be available until you've clicked on the Mac OS partition on your hard drive. If that repairs any problems run it again until the green OK appears and then run Repair Permissions. After repairing use Startup Disk from the same menu to choose your hard drive for restarting from your hard drive.
If your hard drive isn’t recognized in Disk Utility then your hard drive is probably dead.

  • Ipod touch wont load past apple screen. I have tried resetting by holding home button and on/off but after it resets it still only loads to the apple screen. When I plug the device in It stays on the apple screen and itunes does not recognize it?

Ipod touch wont load past apple screen. I have tried resetting by holding home button and on/off but after it resets it still only loads to the apple screen. When I plug the device in It stays on the apple screen and itunes does not recognize it? I fear it may be stuck in some sort of reset loop which is stopping itunes from recognizing it. How do I go about the process of sending it in to apple if I cannot find a fix? Thank you in advance, it is greatly appreciated!!

    - See if placing the iPod in Recovery mode will allow a restore.
    - If not successful and you can't turn the iPod fully off (that is required to place in recovery mode), then let the battery fully drain. After charging for at least an hour try the reset, restore again
    - Then time for an appointment at the Genius Bar of an Apples store.

Think about it...  She plugged it in to another computer, she doesn't remember what she did (yeah, right), and now your iPod is not being recognized by your computer...
Also take into consideration how old is your sister, and how much does she know about electronics?
