HP Phoenix Envy 810-160 / Bad motherboard (out of warranty) / What are my options?

Tech support just told me that my motherboard is bad... wants to charge me $299 for fixing that where he will charge me upfront, send a box and ship it to them for repair (all costs included).. he was very anxious to get my money.. so I had to step back..
What are my best options... I live in Atlanta, Georgia area..
Thanks in advance.

Hi,
Double check your warranty status as your PC has only been on the market for 12.5 months.
Check your warranty status here.
If you purchased your PC with a credit card as many do, then check with your credit card company and see if your PC is covered by an electronics extension warranty.

  • My Macbook Pro screen has failed. [2007] part of the bad group of screens. What are my options here?

    Hello,
Would appreciate any suggestions regarding replacement of my Macbook Pro 4.1 screen.
It has become blurred and I am told Apple no longer supplys parts for this model.
    Thank you

OK, so I think I solved my issue.  It was caused by the system not going to sleep (The screensaver thing was a dead end).
When I ran the console app pmset, I got something like this:
    ➜  ~  pmset -g assertions
    12-06-29 9:11:06 AM EDT
    Assertion status system-wide:
       PreventUserIdleDisplaySleep             0
       CPUBoundAssertion                       0
       DisableInflow                           0
       ChargeInhibit                           0
       PreventSystemSleep                      1
       PreventUserIdleSystemSleep              0
       ExternalMedia                           0
       DisableLowPowerBatteryWarnings          0
       EnableIdleSleep                         1
       NoRealPowerSources_debug                0
       UserIsActive                            0
       ApplePushServiceTask                    0
The process that was causing PreventSystemSleep to be 1 was "org.cups.cupsd" which is the print service.  So I checked all my printers, one of them was "In Use".  When I opened it, there weren't any jobs listed.  I went through the options and selected Jobs > Show Everyone's Jobs and sure enough there was a job there.  I deleted it and everything seems to work now.
The odd thing is that print job was probably from my other account which didn't seem to have this screen problem.  Anyway, I hope this helps anyone out there....

My ipod nano 6th gen fell out of my pocket and the screen cracked badly, is there any coverage for this under warranty? I just bought it a month ago. If not what are the options for getting it fixed? It is pretty frustrating, it fell from about 3 feet out of my pocket and now looks like it was beaten by a hammer.

Should I just ask for my money back??? If it is a simple repair do I just literally push the disc in, push the power button and hold down the C button?
That's where I would begin, too, with
    Repair Disk
Insert Installer disk and Restart, holding down the "C" key until grey Apple appears.
Go to Installer menu (Panther and earlier) or Utilities menu (Tiger) and launch Disk Utility.
Select your HDD (manufacturer ID) in the left panel.
Select First Aid in the Main panel.
(Check S.M.A.R.TStatus of HDD at the bottom of right panel, and report if it saysanything but Verified)
Click Repair Disk on the bottom right.
If DU reports disk does not need repairs quit DU and restart.
If DU reports errors Repair again and again until DU reports disk is repaired.
If DU reports errors it cannot repair you will need touse autility like TechTool Pro,Drive Geniusor DiskWarrior
First we need to determine if the issue you are experiencing with the computer is software or hardware based. Once we have gotten things sorted out there should be time enough to make you decision about keeping or returning it.

My hard drive went out one of my Macs and I am trying to install logic studio on another Mac but the serial number is invalid. What are my options?

Check that the serial you are using is the correct one..
Typically the problem is either you are misreading the serial and therefore typing it in wrong. Check you are correctly entering zeros or O.. and so on....
    or...
You bought the LP9 upgrade version.... which requires the LP8 full serial as well.
If it is the LP9 upgrade serial.. (and not the LP9 full serial) you must enter your original LP8 full serial first and then the upgrade serial for LP9.. when it asks for it.
Failing that.. you can obtain a replacement serial from Apple.. using this form.....

  • Optical drive on iMac at work, barely one year old, won't read CD's....disc utilities shows disc unavailable!  Rarely used and out of warranty, what a rip off!!  I have been on MACS since the 80's and things are getting more and more difficult

Optical drive on iMac at work, barely one year old, won't read CD's....disc utilities shows disc unavailable!  Rarely used and out of warranty, what a rip off!!  I have been on MACS since the 80's and things are getting more and more difficult to deal with. Why did it quit after barely being used? Any help from Apple?

It depends on what you mean by "barely one year old". If the iMac is only a couple of days out of warranty, Apple's been known to make exceptions and extend the warranty, though it's by no means guaranteed. If it's several days or more out of warranty, then Apple will fix it, if it's a hardware problem, but the repair won't be free. This is no different now then it would have been with a Mac purchased back in the 80s.
Why the drive failed, if indeed it has, is impossible to say. Could have been a static shock, a weak component that failed when power was applied, or a mechanical fault in one of the tiny parts used in optical drives and hard drives that finally broke.
    Regards.

    Hi Mike,
Review this posted aticle.  Do some measuring as the graphics card that you referenced is 11.6" long.  You might need to choose a different NVIDIA 760.
I don't foresee an issue.  Your PC has a 600 watt power supply.  Check to make sure that the PSU in your PC has an 8 pin PCI-E power connector and a 6 pin PCI-E power connector.
If you run into issues then review the below information posted by HP.  You will probably need to disable secure boot to get the card to work but after that you should be able to enable that function again.

  • HP Phoenix Envy 810-209 Black Screen Video Card Fail

So about a month ago I purchased this computer mentioned in the title. A week after purchasing it, I had a problem in which while 10 minutes into playing a game my computer screen would go black and kick into power saving mode, the audio from the game would still back available for a short period then would just start to buzz. I did a clean reboot of my computer and reinstalled everything. Again, after another few weeks the exact same problem would occurr. After doing some research I realized that this computer may infact be designed to fail. This PC comes with an Nvidia GeForce 760 video card which requires a minimum 500w power supply to use; however, the PC only comes with a 460 w power supply. Meaning this PC is designed to fail if I'm not mistaken. If anyone has had a similar issue and found a software work around that would be fantastic!
Although, I am under the impression I purchased a doomed PC from the get go.

HP has its video cards made to work with the power supply unit (PSU) installed.  Therefore, this should not be a problem.  They are not the same as the same series retail card.
What game are you playing?  Is it online?

  • My hard drive is about maxed out, what are my options

I have a MacBook that is about 5 years old.  My hard drive is about maxed out.  Trying to determine if it is worth trying to get a larger hard drive, whether I just go to a portable hard drive (a bit of a pain since I travel so much) or something else.  Don't think I can even upgrade to Mountain Lion because of lack of hard drive space.  I love my Mac, but am looking at possibly going to an iPad for travel as the Mac is heavy and I have to carry two computers (work and personal).  Considered buying a new Mac, say an Air, but don't have that kind of cash to drop for it.
Would appreciate any opinions out there?  If I upgrade the hard drive, what kind of money are we talking about?

To transfer your current hard drive I like the free application SuperDuper. It makes a bootable copy of everything on your hard drive http://www.shirt-pocket.com/SuperDuper/SuperDuperDescription.html You'll need a cheap SATA external hard drive case. Put the new drive in the case then format and partition the new drive and clone your old drive to the new one. Check that it's set up right by booting up from the external drive. Then replace your old hard drive with the new one and put your old one in the external case.

So my USB Port has been damaged (I honestly don't know how, I went to grab a snack from the kitchen, came back and my Playbook wans't charging anymore) and it's run out of battery. I have tried multiple chargers but none of them work and I cannot connect to my computer. How can I contact them in hopes of having repairs done? Otherwise I have a $200 paperweight on my hands....

  • I am running out of space on my imac.  what are my options?

I have had my imac for a few years that came with 500 GB of hard drive space.  I am down to about 94 GB and I'm starting to get nervous that I won't have space pretty soon.  I also have a new 2 TB time machine and don't know if that will help me at all.  What are my options to get more space available to me?  The majority of my files are movies, pictures, and music.

you could move some things that you don't access on a regular basis to an external hard drvive.  You can also download omnidiscsweeper and see if it finds anything you don't need.  Read this too: http://pondini.org/OSX/DiskSpace.html

  • Bad soldered in RAM? Repair or replace options?

I have an old iBook G4 that froze up and didn't recover. After it froze I tried to reboot with no luck, it just freezes during the boot-up process. Soooo, I ran a hardware test with the CD and of course everything is great, the only concern is that when it tested the RAM the screen went fuzzy for awhile and then came back- not sure if that is normal. I tried to re-install OS and it froze halfway through that. I rebooted in target disc mode and drug all my files off onto my desktop and called it a night.
From what I can gather, because it freezes even with the install CD that it is a hardware issue, not a software problem. And since it boots fine in target disc mode the hard drive seems to be fine. Freezing usually means not enough RAM, so I am guessing that the RAM is bad, but in this case it is soldered in. If I add more RAM but don't remove the old will it still give me grief? Or is this a factory repair job, or is it even worth that? What are my options? Thanks!

...the only concern is that when it tested the RAM the screen went fuzzy for awhile and then came back- not sure if that is normal.
I believe what you saw was actually the video RAM test, not the system RAM test. The video RAM test does send all sorts of different colored screen configurations through the video system. You will see several multi-colored screens and this is normal.
I would suggest you run the hardware test more than once. On some hardware test software, you can press "option - L" (or it might be "control - L") to set the software in "loop" mode (the text "loop mode" will appear). Leave it running in loops over night. An error may not be caught in the first run or even the second run.

  • Display Seperating From Frame, "New" Phone Is Out of Warranty?

I bought my Z1C online (eBay) on June 7th, 2015 and the display has since started to seperate from the phone's metal frame. The issue has only gotten worse and after calling Customer Support, I was informed my phone is out of warranty. Would this mean the phone is not new? Sorry for the quality of the photos, had to use an old phone for the pictures. Is the new even though its past the warranty period? What are my options for repair?

Contact the seller regarding this issue, it could be that the seller brought it a while back.
