HP Photosmart 5520 Ink Carriage won't move

My husband recently purchased a HP Photosmart 5520 printer while overseas, he shipped in to me in the mail, and it keeps telling me that one or more of the ink cartledges are broken or missing and needs to be replaced, but when I lift open the access door the ink carriage will not move at all and I can't even get it to budge by using my hands, Please help?

You might try doing the reset with access doors closed.  When you plug the power cord back in, you could unplug it once you hear movement in the printer.  Sometimes there is enough movement during startup to unlock the carriage.  If it did move far enough ( I wouldn't force it ), you could move the carriage to the middle and do Solution 4 of the Carriage Jam document.  You could also have a better look on the other side of the carriage to see if there is any paper there.
If that doesn't work, you could try downloading and running the  HP Print and Scan Doctor for Windows.  Does that help?

The printer came up with a General Error code. I followed the suggested page on how to fix it however the ink carriage won't move to the center. I've tried turning it on and off, unplugging the power cord and looking for any obstructions for the carriage but I can't find anything.
    Anyone have suggestions??? Thanks!

  • Ink carriage won't move

I removed the print cartridge to send someone to the store for replacements. We lost power and the printer shut off. It is now back on, but the carriage returned to position on the right. The printer is giving me an ink cartridge error and the carriage won't slide left so I can replace the cartridges. Please help!

    Hi @Mrsdoolie ,
I see by your post that the carriage isn't moving out, to reinstall the new cartridge. I would really like to be able to help you resolve this issue.
I would do a hard reset to see if that will resolve the issue.
Leave the printer on and unplug the power cable from the printer and wall outlet for 60 seconds.
Then reconnect the power cable to the printer and wall outlet rather than a surge protector.
This ensures the printer is receiving full power and may help this situation.
Try these steps to see if it will resolve the issue.

  • INK CARTRIDGE PROBLEM CARRIAGE WON'T MOVE 7520

my error is INK CARTRIDGE PROBLEM............. but no matter all attempts suggested( like plug,  unplug , turn off and on.  hp download to scan problems did show the ICP being the issue).   the carriage won't move to the center.  i was in the middle of installiing new hp 564 cartridges.  took out the first cartridge black and i did not have another to fill spot. tried to install old c artridge.  shut printer cover and next i went to open it the carriage won't move to the middle.  ran the scans for testing and all say INK CARTRIDGE PROBLEM and the control board will not allow me to get out of that message to run any tools from the control board.  Please help.................please.  Have warranty but do not know what that will cover if problem cannot be fix.

    Hey there @lynnriley0785!
I would be happy to provide some help regarding the ink cartridge problem error on your Photosmart 7520!  The first thing I suggest is to plug the printer into the wall outlet directly if it is currently in a power surge protector or extension cord. This may sound silly but this will ensure the printer is getting full power and may eliminate any unnecessary troubleshooting. If the printer is no longer getting full power from the power surge or extension cord it may give false errors, have poor connection, paper feed issues, quality issues and jam issues.
If the carriage is still stuck in the printer with the cartridge problem error then I suggest removing the power cable and trying to manually move the carriage with your hand.  If the carriage moves then remove all the cartridges, close the printer and plug it back in.  Once the printer comes back on see if you can install the cartridges again.
If you cannot get the carriage to move remove the power  and check for any jammed paper in the printer.  I have provided a document with instructions on all the places to check for a possible piece of jammed paper.

    I have an deskjet 940C.
The ribbon cable that attaches to the carriage (thing that holds ink cartridges) has come loose.
The carriage has moved to far right.
I can not move the carriage to center to recommect the cable.

If I can't get printer to work again, how do I at least get the ink cartridges out of the printer?
The printer makes no sound when power is turned on.

    Hello katy36,
    Welcome to the HP Forums!
I understand you Officejet 6700 Premium carriage will not move and you're receiving a message stating paper jam. I will do my best to assist you! Please make sure this printer is plugged into a direct wall, not a surge protector. I just want to see if this makes a difference.
Follow this entire HP document on 'Carriage Jam' Message Displays on the Printer Control Panel. This will help to make sure no paper is stuck within the carriage and will provide steps to move over your carriage, depending on how stuck your carriage is.
Generally when the printer is checking devices, it's going into a maintenance. You can try performing a hard reset on your printer for more than 60 seconds. Leave the printer turned on> Disconnect the power cord from the back of the printer.
Please post your results, as I will be looking forward to hearing from you. Have a great night!

  • Photosmart 5520 Ink Cartridge rubber seals

    Hi,
I have just openied the lid on on my HP Photosmart 5520 to replace the inks.  I noticed that the rubber seal which surrounds the ink inlet nozel is missing from 2 of the colour cradles.  They are easily removed and I can see that they are linkely to stick to the cartridge when they are removed and therefore easily thrown away.  Are they important and will the printer operate without them?  Where can I get new ones?

  • HP Photosmart c309g-m carriage does not move to centre when lid lifted

    Hi,
I'm trying to change the cartridges on my HP Photosmart c309g-m. However, when I lift the lid, the carriage does not centre; it just stays on the right hand side, beneath the plastic cover, making it impossible to change the cartridges. The printer is definitely powered on and seems to be printing ok.
    Any ideas?

Sorry that you are having a problem with your carriage not moving.
Try to unplug the power cord from the back and manually move the carriage.
Look the right right side of the carriage and see if a piece of paper or something is holding it hostage.

  • Deskjet 712C: Ink cartridge got stuck in right side and won't move

I have an old DeskJet 712C that was working fine until today. Strangely, the ink cartridge got stuck in the right side of the printer and won't move. As soon as I turn on the printer, the red light starts blinking. Does anyone know any tricks to get the ink cartridge to move again? Thank you for your help.
    This question was solved.
    View Solution.

    Hi,
It may be possible to move the carriage if you turn off the printer. Unplug the printer and open the printer lid.  See if you can move the carriage by hand.  If this is possible move the carriage to the centre.  Check to see that the is nothing blocking the movment of the carriage - e.g. some pieces of paper.
Close the lid and then plug the printer back in. Hopefully this will help.
I did find a You Tube video which shows fixing carriage jams on C4200 printers ( I know that they are not the same as the 712C) but some of the suggestions may be useful if my initial thought above do not help.  the video is at this link:

Again these tips are not specifically for your printer but they may help solve your issue.
I hope that this was helpful.

  • Photosmart 5520 won't scan to Mac

Today I bought a Photosmart 5520 e-All-In-One to replace my previous B110.  I cannot get it to scan to my iMac, after hours of trying.  My iMac is running Mac OS X Version 10.6.8 and is fully up-to-date as of today.  When I try to scan, the printer provides the following message - "No Computer Found.  Make sure the printer software is installed on your computer, and that "Scan to Computer" is enabled via the printer software.".  I have installed, uninstalled, "scrubbed" and reinstalled 6 times, from the CD only, and from the HP website both via the link on the CD and independenlty. I have shut down the printer, pulled out the cable and put it back again numerous times.  I have shut down and restarted the iMac just as many times. I've tried using the USB cable provided, and wirelessly.  The printer will let me print from the iMac wirelessly.  The printer will communicate wirelessly with our old Windows laptop, both for printing and scanning.  The HP Utility on the iMac is having trouble with the "Enable Scan to Computer".  Sometimes it reads "Communication Error.  Unable to communicate with device.  Check Cables and connection settings.  If the problem persists, try restarting your computer and the HP device.".  Which I have, and as I say, it will print wirelessly.  Sometimes the "Scan Settings and "Scan to Computer" icon are absent altogether.  Sometimes, I click on the icon for Scan to Computer and HP Utilites "unexpectedly" shuts down altogether.  I've scoured the HP site, discussion groups, Google, etc, for nearly 8 hours.  When I try to go through "Image capture" in Applications, it tells me that there is "No camera or scanner connected". When I try to go through HP Scan in Device Utilites in Applications, the message reads  "Scanner communication cannot be established.  HP Photosmart series is currently unavailable.  Ensure your device is powered on, check the connection, and ensure your network is functioning properly.  If theses conditions are correct, restart the device and try scanning again."    All of these have been checked, but nothing seems to work.  Why won't it scan to the iMac?  Can it be fixed or should I just give  up and return it?

  • Photosmart 5520 - Black not printing on some things

My 5520 has been fitted with new cartridges and all work except the black.  Strangely, black (or at least grey) writing prints on the quality/print report and the cartridge shows as full when this is checked by the on screen request.  However, the print report has a completely blank rectangle under the 'black' heading.  I have followed all the usual steps but I am confused as to why I get black printing but no black on pictures.

HI , Welcome to the HP Support Forums! I understand that you're unable to print black on your HP Photosmart 5520 e-All-in-One Printer. I will certainly do my best to help you. I would try the steps within this guide, Printer Prints a Blank Page or Does Not Print Black or Color Ink for the HP Photosmart 5520 and Deskjet Ink Advantage 5520 e-All-in-One Printer Series.  Solution one: Use genuine HP ink cartridges HP recommends that you use genuine HP ink cartridges. HP cannot guarantee the quality or reliability of non-HP ink cartridges or refilled HP ink cartridges. If you do not use genuine HP ink cartridges, the steps in this document might not resolve print quality issues.Visit HP SureSupply to check ink cartridge compatibility or purchase replacement ink cartridges.Go to the HP SureSupply website.Scroll to the bottom of the page, and then make sure the country/region location is correct.Follow the on-screen instructions to order new ink cartridges or check ink cartridge compatibility with your printer.Genuine HP ink cartridges can also be purchased from other retailers. Solution two: Check the estimated ink levels, and then replace any low or empty ink cartridgesLow ink can contribute to poor print quality. Follow these steps to check the estimated ink levels, and then replace any low or empty ink cartridges. Step 1: Check the estimated ink levelsFollow these steps to check the estimated ink levels. From the home screen of the printer control panel, touch the Ink icon (). The current ink levels display.Figure : Example of estimated ink levels NOTE: Ink level warnings and indicators provide estimates for planning purposes only. When an indicator shows low-ink levels, consider having a replacement ink cartridge available to avoid possible printing delays. You do not need to replace ink cartridges until print quality becomes unacceptable. If none of the cartridges are low on ink, you do not need to replace them yet. Continue to the next solution. If any of the cartridges are low on ink, continue to the next step to replace them.Step 2: Replace any low or empty ink cartridgesFollow these steps to replace any low or empty ink cartridges.Video of replacing the ink cartridges The following video demonstrates how to replace a cartridge.  If you have trouble viewing the video or to view the video in a different size, click here to play the video on YouTube. If the product is off, press the Power button () to turn on the product. Twist the cap counter-clockwise until it snaps off.Figure : Remove the orange cap from the cartridgeWith the nozzle and the contacts facing down, push the cartridge into its slot. Press down on the cartridge until it is firmly seated. Make sure that the color icon on the cartridge label matches the color icon on the slot.Figure : Insert the cartridgeRepeat these steps to insert the other cartridges.Close the cartridge access door.Figure : Close the cartridge access doorStep 3: Align the printer Follow these steps to align the printer using the control panel. From the home screen, touch the Setup icon (), and then touch Tools.Touch the Down Arrow (), and then touch Align Printer. The printer will align automatically. Follow these steps to make sure that the ink cartridges are properly vented and seated correctly.Press the Power button to turn on the printer, if it is not already turned on. Run your finger along the top of the cartridges to feel for any that are protruding, and if any are, press down firmly until each cartridge snaps into place.Close the cartridge access door.Figure : Close the cartridge access doorTry the print job again.Solution four: Clean the printheadFollow these steps to use an automated tool to clean the printhead.Make sure that plain white U.S. letter or A4 size paper is loaded in the tray. From the control panel home screen, touch the Settings icon (), and then touch Tools.Touch the Down Arrow (), and then touch Clean Printhead. The product cleans the printheads, and then prints a test page.Review the print quality on the test page.Figure : Example of the printhead cleaning test pageIf the print quality on the test page is satisfactory, return to the current print job.If the print quality on the test page is unsatisfactory, perform a secondary cleaning of the printhead. If the printhead is badly clogged, it might require another cleaning cycle. If so, wait 30 minutes after the last cleaning stage to start the first stage of the cleaning process over again. NOTE:  Never turn off the printer when ink cartridges are missing. Make sure that you replace any missing ink cartridges as soon as possible to avoid print quality issues and possible extra ink usage or damage to the ink system. To avoid issues that require cleaning the printhead, always turn the printer off with the Power button on the printer itself.Solution five: Service the printer Contacting HP for service in all countries/regions except Asia Pacific. If you completed all the preceding steps and your product still has an issue, service the product.First, go to Check your product warranty to check your printer warranty status, and then go to Contact HP Support to find an authorized service dealer or to schedule a repair.Repair fees might apply for out-of-warranty printers. NOTE: Keep a print sample that shows the problem. If the ink cartridges, printhead, or printer is replaced under warranty, the support agent will request the print sample. If the printer is returned to HP, the print sample must be returned with the printer. Place the sample in the output tray when you package your printer for shipping. What you can do, is use the following link to create yourself a case number, then call and it may help speed up the call process:
    Step 1. Open link: www.hp.com/contacthp/

  • Photosmart 5520 not printing black

As with many others here, my HP Photosmart 5520 is not printing in black.  Have gone through all the HP troubleshooting, as well as the steps on the forums, short of disassembling and removing the print head.
Replaced the print cartridge twice with genuine HP 564 and HP 564XL, checked the cartridge vents, and have run the clean printer head clean utilities 10x, including turning off, waiting several hours, and going through the process again.    It still won't print black, and the print quality diagnostic "black" box is completely blank, or has a few faint gray lines.
Printer warranty expired 1/2014.  Was a HP customer for life, but now am very frustrated.  This is the second HP printer in a row that has failed soon after the warranty expired, and with the exact same problem.  My printer's info is below.  I am in Beaverton, Oregon, USA
The following information was returned for your product
Serial number [edited Serial Number by Moderator] Product number CX042A Warranty status Warranty has expired Warranty end date 2014-01-17 (YYYY-MM-DD)

    Hello @GeoffWampler,
Welcome to the HP Support Forums! I see you are running into some print quality issues on your HP Photosmart 5520, you are unable to print in black ink.
You have exhausted the steps here: Printer Does Not Print Black Ink or Color Ink, or Prints Blank Pages, with no success.
Please note: There are three printhead cleaning stages. Complete all three stages if necessary. If the printhead is badly clogged, it might require another cleaning cycle. If so, wait 30 minutes after the last (third) cleaning stage to start the first stage of the cleaning process over again.
I suspect the issue may be the printer and not the cartridge. I highly recommend you call our technical support at 800-474-6836, I trust they will be able to assist you regardless of the warranty status. • C3180 Photosmart All-in-one won't print. Gives message 'clear paper jam.' There is no paper jam.

C3180 Photosmart All-in-one won't print. Gives message  'clear paper jam.'  There is no paper jam.  About a month ago there was a paper jam, but was removed.  It worked fine since then until yesterday.  I've tried all the HP trouble-shooting suggestions- unplug, take apart, manually move carriage, etc. and nothing has solved the problem.  The paper does not advance...all that happens if I try to print is a lot of noise like carriage going back and forth and after a/b 1-2 minutes it will show the "red X" blinking on the printer and a message on the computer screen, "Clear paper jam."  When the problem first started yesterday the message was that the printer was "Out of paper."  I need to print a resume and this is just the wrong time for someone such as myself with little computer knowledge to try to figure it out.  Thanks for any suggestions!

    Hi there pattimessick,
You may not need to remove/re-add. Try downloading and running the print and scan doctor located here:
    http://h10025.www1.hp.com/ewfrf/wc/document?docname=c03275041&cc=us&dlc=en&lc=en
It can fix a lot on its own (especially connectivity problems) and if not give a better idea of what is going on.
    Best of Luck!
