HP Photosmart 5520 only printing black

I have a new Photosmart 5520, loaded with new HP cartridges. The ink colour levels are showing as fine, but it will not print in colour, only black. Have tried with various PCs. Test sheet and copying also comes out mono.

Have you checked if the print settings are set to print in grayscale/black only?

You did not mentioned your Mac OS X version, however I assume you have one of the latest versions.
The Photosmart 7150 is not supported on Mac OS X v10.6, v10.7, v10.8 or v10.9 and therefore it is more than likely that there are no drivers for your OS and the used Generic Driver only provide B&W printing.
Although it is not officially supported you may check 3rd party solutions such as the 3rd party HP-IJS print drivers which list your printer as supported.
Be sure to install any of the 3 required downloads, then click the plus sign under Printers & Scanners, click the Use drop down and click on Select Printer Software.
Search for your printer model form the list and select the driver, I believe that may work:

Although it only list up to 10.8 (Mountain Lion) it should also work on Mavericks from my experience.

Wireless photosmart 5520 wont print black

Printer wont print in black ink only. Have reset several times. Cleaned printhead. Diagnostic shows colors fully but 4 small stripes of black. Help!

I will suggest that you begin with following the steps within this Printer Does Not Print Black Ink or Color Ink, or Prints Blank Pages document. Those steps should be able to get the black ink flowing properly again.

Photosmart 5520 not printing black

As with many others here, my HP Photosmart 5520 is not printing in black. Have gone through all the HP troubleshooting, as well as the steps on the forums, short of disassembling and removing the print head.
Replaced the print cartridge twice with genuine HP 564 and HP 564XL, checked the cartridge vents, and have run the clean printer head clean utilities 10x, including turning off, waiting several hours, and going through the process again. It still won't print black, and the print quality diagnostic "black" box is completely blank, or has a few faint gray lines.
Printer warranty expired 1/2014. Was a HP customer for life, but now am very frustrated. This is the second HP printer in a row that has failed soon after the warranty expired, and with the exact same problem. My printer's info is below. I am in Beaverton, Oregon, USA

Welcome to the HP Support Forums! I see you are running into some print quality issues on your HP Photosmart 5520, you are unable to print in black ink.
You have exhausted the steps here: Printer Does Not Print Black Ink or Color Ink, or Prints Blank Pages, with no success.
Please note: There are three printhead cleaning stages. Complete all three stages if necessary. If the printhead is badly clogged, it might require another cleaning cycle. If so, wait 30 minutes after the last (third) cleaning stage to start the first stage of the cleaning process over again.
I suspect the issue may be the printer and not the cartridge. I highly recommend you call our technical support at 800-474-6836, I trust they will be able to assist you regardless of the warranty status. Photosmart 3210 only prints black and white??

Hi everyone,
I have an HP Photosmart 3210 that I just installed the lastest HP drivers onto my up to date macbook. Once finishing the install and completing the setup, I can only print in black and white / grey scale. Is this driver issue? Has anyone seen this before and can it be fixed?

Yes, this is a color printer and has 5 color cartridges and 1 black. All of them are full except for one which happens to be magenta I believe. Anyway this printer works fine with a Windows XP desktop and prints in color. I'm not sure if it's a driver issue or the fact it is connected to an Airport Express.
As a test I hooked the macbook directly to the printer by a usb cable and it still prints black and white only. I checked the settings and see nothing defaulting to print black and white. Also, now that I have this hooked up to the airport, now the Windows XP box will only print in black and white. This is really weird and think it's either an OS X issue or HP mac printer dirver issue.
Any other ideas?

HP Photosmart 5520 Not Printing Black; I'm Out $58.99 For HP Ink Cartridges I Can't Use

So after my printer stopped printing in black ink, I came to the forums to research the problem. I tried all of the recommended/suggested "fixes" to no avail. Upon realizing that this is a known issue with these printers, and after speaking with an HP tech via phone who informed me that the printer is broken, I spent the rest of my morning trying to get someone at HP to please compensate me for the $58.99 that I spent on the HP ink cartridges that I can no longer use or return -- it was only after I installed the new cartridges that I learned that the printer is broken -- toward the purchase of another HP printer. (I was perfectly willing to buy another HP printer because the 5220 has been fine for us.)
The best they could offer me was $17 off a $99 replacement printer that is *not* compatible with the new ink cartridges that I currently have. So, according to my math, that would be $58.99 + $82 = $140.99 to be able to print again.
Not exactly a great deal, IMHO.
Very disappointed with HP customer service. Will not be purchasing any more HP products.

HP2420 Laser Jet printer only printing black pages

I have an HP2420 laser jet printer that is only printing black pages. I have tried 3 different toner cartridges so the cartridge is not the issue. I saw that there are maintenance kits. Could these help solve my problem and if so, how do I use them?

Okay, now where was the paper jam located? Was there any paper torn off when you cleared the jam? As I stated before, almost sounds like a voltage problem, might be one of the contacts might be having an issue. Also, since the machine is new, I would suggest contacting HP, the machine should still be under warranty, if it is in fact new, and see if they can either provide service for it or just replace it. That is of course if you do not get it resolved.

5520 wont print black ink

can someone please help me with this issue.. my 5520 wont print black.. it prints color ok and it also prints grey it just wont print black it stopped working after i replaced the cartridge.. i then replaced the black one a second time and it still doesnt work.. i have tried all of the cleaning suggested and have also cleaned the vent but it looked as as picture and it still doesnt print black.. please help i cant afford new printer and i cant afford to buy ink ...help!!!!

As this is a 5520 I would advise calling HP Support, even if you're out of warranty, as you may require a replacement printer

I have a used HP Officejet that only prints black

Hello! I recently bought a used HP Officejet 4500. I am using it as a printer with my MacBook Pro version 10.9.3 and it will only print black. I have combed all through the printing information and cannot find where to change the settings to make it print in both color and black. Also, how do I connect it through the Ethernet? Thank you!

Photosmart b110a only prints in black and white

Hi i've got a photosmart b110a which copies and scans in colour, but will only print out from my imac in black and white.
Does anyone have the same problem and hopefully the answer

I tried to understand why my B110a was printing Black and White. I just solved the problem which is driver related(in my case).
If you are on a Mac do this:
1. Download the last drivers from the HP website for your printer;
2. Install them normally;
3. Go in System Preferences > Print & Fax;
4. There should be your printer listed on the left side of the window, double click it;
5. Another window should open, select Printer Setup at the top right;
6. Now select Driver on the top;
7. In 'Print Using:' select: 'HP Photosmart B110 Series'.
That was the problem for me, even though the driver were installed they weren't selected - I know it's silly.
Hope that solve your problem, otherwise I'm not be able to help you further.
If you use any Windows or Linux platform I won't be able to help at all as I don't know how could I set that - if is that the case - on those platforms.

C4650 Will only print black from the internet. MS Word and PS will not print in black but has color.

Before you think I just haven't tried anything, let me run you down with the whole lot:
-HP PhotoSmart C4650
-Windows Vista
-Problem: My printer won't print in black --but-- this only goes for Microsoft applications it seems. If I have a page of text in black, when printing from MS Word, the page comes out blank, however the printer is actually "printing" back and forth. IF, however I print from my browser, from email, or a webpage, picture, google docs, etc, black prints *just fine.* So far this holds true for both MS Word and PhotoShop CS5. Issue: Black ink simply doesn't print from any program other than a browser.
-NO. The cartridge isn't empty. NO. It's not incompatible. NO. The cartridge head isn't dry and I am not going to soak it in water. This is a new cartridge. It's the official HP brand.
I've done a search and I've found that a few people seem to have this "only print from the internet" problem, however none of these was solved. The only advice that an HP support member gave to one of them is to "install XP service pack 2" however.. I am not running XP. A few other people get the opposite issue where they can only print color from the internet and not from the computer's applications.
I don't know much about printers but it sounds like some kind of driver issue. Yes. I've already searched for, uninstalled and reinstalled drivers. Whenever I have to print something, I now try to open it up in my firefox just so I can be able to print black. It's quite the hassle. Almost seems like some kind of ploy to cause people to buy new ink cartridges when it's not really empty.
-Yes, I have also uninstalled and reinstalled the printer.
-Updated my windows (although idk how that would help. But I know it's going to be a suggestion anyway.)
Is there any known fix or should i chuck it off the balcony and go get a lexmark?

Photosmart 5520 not printing borderless

Hi,I have a Photosmart 5520 printer and use Mac computers (and sometimes ipads/iphones). One of the features of this printer that led to me buying it is that it is meant to have borderless printing. Most of my printing is done from MS Word. Although the printer is meant to be borderless, if I have Word documents with headers/footers, they always get cut off. There is at least a good centimetre or two of white border around the documents that I print. This is very annoying if I have spent a long time formatting a document assuming that there will be no borders! Can someone tell me how I am meant to print borderlessly? I am assuming that it is just a setting somewhere that I am missing but I cannot find it! Is this something that I will have to set up on all devices that use the printer? Or can I somehow make it a setting on the actual printer so that everything sent to it prints borderlessly? Thanks

The Photosmart 5520 (and other HP printers) can print borderless, but with a few cavaets: Borderless printing is only enabled when printing on photo paper. (Plain paper would cockle if printed to the edge, this would cause jamming.)When printing borderless the print is oversized by a few percent to make sure that the image prints without leaving any white space if the media is printed skewed. Borderless printing (and photo media selection) are not compatible with two-sided printing.

Photosmart 5525 wont print black

printer will not print black, all other colors print fine, have run clean print head so many times that my new colored ink cartiridges are low on ink. When it runs the clean head the black column is empty no black at all. I have no other ideas on what to do except maybe get a new printer...not an hp. Also i have had this issue before and i have cleaned the heads and it is working again, so i dont knwo if that one head is clogged or what ...and yes i did try anther ink cartiridge. any help would be appreciated

If the steps there do not resolve the issue please contact HP Support, even if the printer is no longer under warranty. If the above does not give satisfactory results then please post back here and mention what country you are in.

Photosmart 5520 - damaged print cartridge msge but cant access cartridges to change

I've just replaced a black 364 XL print cartrdige and got the message that it was damaged. I tried to open the printer to take it out and replace it but the cartridges are all stuck to the right of the access area and won't move so I can't get at it. I've looked at the HP forums and gone through all the steps around turning it on and off, checking its not a paper jam etc but no joy. Can anyone help please? Thanks

I understand your carriage is stuck on the right hand side using the Photosmart 5520. I will gladly help you out! Please make sure this printer is plugged into a direct wall, not a surge protector. I just want to see if this makes a difference.
