HP Photosmart 7520 chewing ink

Hi, my 7520 is about 12 months old, we have hardly used it and its chewing through ink cartridges. In addition, now on 2 occassions the colour cartridges aren't even empty and it stops printing in colour. My first set of cartidges we purchased direct from HP through the vendor, (we meant to send them back), as these failed. We then bought a pack retail, these have also failed before being empty. The printer is always on and can still eprint in black. Have printed no more than 50 pages since new. All settings are default. Only printing documents. Not signed up to print through any apps. Not impressed, previous HP printer was awesome, wish we still had it.

Hello , Welcome to the HP Forums! I hope you have a pleasant experience here.  I can certainly understand your frustration with this, and would like to help. I understand that the color inks are consistently not working before the ink has actually run out on your HP Photosmart 7520 e-All-in-One printer. It sounds like you don't print color very often, so what I suspect is happening, is that the color ink in your printhead is drying up a little and clogging your print nozzles. When you install a new cartridge, the printer will automatically service the printhead and that seems to be unclogging it for a short period for you. When you run into this issue I would suggest running a printhead cleaning from the front panel of your printer to get it back up and running without replacing the cartridge. You can follow Solution Six > Step Four in this document for instructions on how to do this:Fixing Print Quality Problems for the HP Photosmart 7520 e-All-in-One Printer Series Thanks for posting, I hope this helps!

  • Photosmart 7520 black ink not working

My brand new 7520 appears to have given up work already. Black ink is out of order.During printing it started to generate unprinted stripes and after two pages no more black ink was put on paper.Although the almost new cartridge should still do it, I have replaced it by a new HP original brand cartridge. The problem however persists and no black ink still put on paper.I cannot see any physical defect. What shall I do?Swift feedback is appreciated.

This looks like a common issue with the printers sharing this printhead. It's the printhead failure, and it manifests inself in the printer stopping printing in black. I have a one year old printer, days away from the expiration of its warranty. All of a sudden, it stopped printing black. There's lots of discussions on the internet about letting the printhead soak in warm water and similar home remedies. None of this helped me. Now HP will be replacing my printhead, this time for free. But more generally, it's too bad they can't design a printer which would last more than a year. My previous printer C7250 developed a similar problem, the infamous "ink system failure", but unlike 7520 it doesn't have a removable printhead. So this basically just bricked my printer, had to throw it away. The cost of fixing it was more than buying a new printer.

  • How do I get the "non HP Ink Cartridge" pop up to go away??? HP Photosmart 7520

After my trial ink ran out on the HP Photosmart 7520 I installed a non-hp ink cartridge.  It prints fine but EVERY SINGLE TIME I print anything I get a pop up saying I have a non-hp cartridge installed and the quality cannot be guaranteed.  It then gives me the option to shop HP online, cancel the print, or click ok to close it.  EVERY SINGLE TIME.  I print a lot of pages and this is extremely annoying.  There is no "do not show this message in the future" option.  How can I make this stop popping up????

OK, you're receiving this error because of the non HP cartridge you've installed. This message can be bypassed by selecting OK; it will not go away until you install HP ink. Until then you should be able to print.

  • Photosmart 7520 ink usage

I have a photosmart 7520 all in one printer.  Question:  When regular black ink cartridge is depleted, does the printer automatically use the photo black cartridge to provide ink in order to continue printing?  If so, does it continue to do so until the photo black cartridge is depleted?

    figubedu
Short answer:  No, the cartridges are not interchangeable in this sense.  The photo black and regular black are for different "black" uses.  Need both.
You might be able to get away with switching the Printing Preferences > Advanced > Print in Grayscale (On)
You might be able to get some sort of output from the printer that way if you really do not want to replace the black cartridge for some reason.   The only issue is the one mentioned:  different backgrounds, image printing, documents, the like -- need different blacks.  ??
Maybe one of our Printer Experts can tell us more.
You can order replacement ink to ship to your location from HP SureSupply
Free shipping and shipping is ultra-fast, too, at least in the USA.
I use the 564XL cartridges of all the colors in my 7520.

  • Photosmart 7520 General Error 0x6100004c plus ink carriage won't move

The printer came up with a General Error code. I followed the suggested page on how to fix it however the ink carriage won't move to the center. I've tried turning it on and off, unplugging the power cord and looking for any obstructions for the carriage but I can't find anything.

  • No ink notification - PhotoSmart 7520

I recently purchased a PhotoSmart 7520, installed the software on my computer, which uses Windows Vista, and connected by WiFi.  Everything works fine, but the black ink ran out today and I had not received any low ink message.  I previously has an older PhotoSmart printer and always got low ink warnings before it ran out.  I looked for a setting to turn on notifications in case they were somehow tuned off, but couldn't find one.  Any ideas?
    This question was solved.

    Hi @RickDiamond,
    Welcome to the HP Forums!
I see that you are not getting any low ink notifications with your HP Photosmart 7520, and I am happy to help!
Please try to open the HP Solution Center (HP Printer Icon on your desktop), click on your ink levels at the top of the screen. Then select Advanced settings, there you can select either to Show the ink alerts right away or only when printing.
If those were unchecked, it would explain why you did not get any notifications.
Hope this helps, and thank you for posting!

  • HP Photosmart 7520 ink overuse

4 years of owning this printer, when it work it is nice (though the self feed is shot and not used much) Problem is I HATE the ink consumption!!!!! I have it in the preset printer config BUT it goes through way too much picture ink. I can't locate the problem or a way to change it. In all the years I have owned it I have to replace the photo black 7 to 1 over the regular black ink.  I still have 2 regular ink carts in the drawer that will likely go bad before I ever need them. Such a waste of product and time.FYI I have the settings on regular, I NEVER have printed even 1 picture (Though I have a whole stink load of paper and envelopes from every  time I purchase a ink kit) If I were not already bald I would pull out my hair. THE ONLY time I can get it to use the regular black cart is when I go to grey scale by manually changing the print settings

    Welcome to the forums @swashington007
If I understand correctly, you are looking to print in black ink only from your Photosmart 7520. I have located a very helpful thread by my colleague @MissTeriLynn that I would like you to see, read and try. If her post does not cover a certain concern of yours, please feel free to write me back and I will do my best to help you!

  • Photosmart 7520 ink cartridges

Q1)  I have a 8 month old Photosmart 7520 with 5 ink cartridge slots.  Previously I have only needed to buy the large black 364XL ink cartridge.  Last week, as my colour had run out,  I bought the 364 4-pack, which to my surprise has a large black, small pink, blue and yellow cartridges  -  no small black.  Can I buy the small black separately?
Q2)  I was also surprised that all 5  ran out simultaneously, whilst still showing a small amount on screen.  Are they designed to stop after so many copies, regardless of any ink left in any of the cartridges?
    This question was solved.
    View Solution.

The small "black" cartridge is a photo cartridge, you can buy a 364 or 364xl photo cartridge separately.
There is a priming process that uses some ink when a cartridge is replaced to remove air from the printheads.  If some cartridges are low on ink (but perhaps not completely depleted) changing a different cartridge may cause enough ink to be used to deplete the low cartridges.
The document here has information on how ink is used in the printer, the Photosmart 7520 is an IIC printer in the terminology of that document.

  • Photosmart 7520 ink cartridge

Not exactly an install question, but recently purchased Photosmart 7520.  In trying to replace the set up ink cartridges, the regular size cartridges I have purchased are too big and won't fit the ink tray.  This is not the XL size, just the regular size.  Where exactly am I supposed to get the proper ink size cartridge when the HP cartridges for this printer won't fit?

I'm glad your problem is solved.
    Thank you for your feedback!

  • Photosmart 7520 not printing

My Photosmart 7520 is printing blanks after just getting its ink changed and also printed its ink report right after perfectly fine. What is going on? I need help ASAP. I have a final due in two days!

    Hello @bambiklaire001,
Welcome to the HP Support Forums!
I would like to assist you today with resolving the blank pages printing issue that you're experiencing on your HP Photosmart 7520 e-All-in-One Printer since replacing the ink cartridges. At this point this issue may be due to defective cartridges or a Printhead issue within your Photosmart printer. The Printhead is the mechanism that the cartridges fit into. It controls 'reading' the cartridges and putting ink on the page. If the Printhead is defective than the print system within your product is a defective and a replacement Printhead may be needed. With that being said, I am going to run you through some troubleshooting steps to see if we can get this printer functioning properly again for you. I am going to have you start troubleshooting by printing a Print Quality Report from your printer to verify if all cartridges are experiencing this printing issue or if the issue is being caused by one specific cartridge.
How to print a Quality Report:
Load plain white U.S. letter or A4 size paper in the input tray.
On the printer control panel, touch the Settings icon ().
Touch Tools, and then touch Print Quality Report. The printer prints the test page.
If this report prints perfectly: than the printing issue that you're experiencing is not being caused by your printer. Rather, it would appear that something on your computer is causing the blank pages to print. If you're using a Windows computer can I please have you click here to download and run the HP Print and Scan Doctor Tool. This Tool will run on your computer and 'fix printing' issues for you. Should any driver, software, or connection conflicts be found than the HP Print and Scan Doctor Tool will attempt to resolve those conflicts for you.
If this report prints with quality issues, or missing colours/black: than the printing issue that you're experiencing is being caused by your printer. To resolve this issue can I please have you click here. Once the support document opens please run through Solution one, Solution three, and Solution six. This includes any sub-steps under the listed Solutions.
If your printer is failing to print one colour or black, please replace that cartridge. If the issue persists after replacing the cartridge than this it is most likely the Printhead causing the issue. If your printer is Out of Warranty you may want to check out the helpful post by @Bob_Headrick  Black Ink Not Working. The steps will walk you through manually soaking and cleaning the Printhead mechanism. Only run these steps if your printer is Out of Warranty as the troubleshooting steps will void your Printhead warranty.
Please respond to this post with the result of your troubleshooting. Best of luck!

  • Photosmart 7520 Horrible Print Quality

I have purchased HP printers for years and have always considered them excellent and reliable products. About a year ago I purchased a Photosmart 7520. This has turned out to be the worst printer I have ever owned. The print quality is terrible and unreliable. The ink constantly streaks or doesn't flow properly. The ink cartridges last no time at all. I have constantly used the clean print head and align feature with only minimal and temporary improvement. I may have to throw this one in the trash and look at another brand.

I have to agree with you.  The HP7520 is the worst HP printer I have ever owned.  It streaks constantly on regluar paper, none of my previous printers did this.
I abandoned an old reliable printer for this printer just to get wi-fi network printing capability.  My old Brother MFC250 all in one printer was the first non-HP printer I had ever owned.  Previous to that I had several HP printers, and had worked supporting HP Corvallis' site in the 90's, so I am a fan of HP technology in general.
This printer has the following shortcomings:
    1) Ink cartridges are engineered to look like they contain ink... but are constantly running dry.  I do not print as much now as I used to in the past.  (*SMALLEST INK LONGEVITY*)... If the cartridges could be made any smaller... HP Marketing would have done this IMHO.
    2) Print output is constantly streaking, requiring the printer be "tuned up" constantly
    3) Print cartridge installation/sanity check is buggy/fragile, in one case a $12 print cartridge for Photo Black I installed this week was "damaged".   I bought another cartridge, and it too was "damaged".  A power cycle of the printer yielded non problem... just a wasted purchase and time to run out and buy a replacement cartridge to replace a newly installed cartridge that had no problem.
I *just* ran out of color ink, and I'm certain that this is indeed the worst HP printer I have ever owned.
Having said all of this... it looks nice on my desktop and the chimes are nice...
What would help is a better "you are running low on ink" indication with this printer.   If I knew say, a week ahead of time that I'm running out of ink... that would be nice.
This printer may need to be recycled once I can find a review of a better one.
My wife has an old printer somewhere in storage, we may pull that one out and dust it off and plug it into the router to have wireless printing... <sigh>.
Would *NOT* recommend this printer for purchase.... heading to Amazon to add that customer review.

  • Photosmart 7520 can't acquire IP address

I have a new Photosmart 7520 and I'm unable to connect it wirelessly to the network.  It is unable to acquire an IP address. I've tried the wizard as well as the set-up option and neither work.  The MAC filter is disabled.  Not sure what to do.

this printer has been a nightmare since I purchased it in January, I had the same problem, I struggled with it for a month before I gave in and phone HP support and they got it to connect but it took them 3 hours to do it, they promised an update
would fix the issue, have you turned on your printer to update automatically?, I got the update and it instructed me to turn off the printer so the update could take effect which I did. Could not turn it back on again so left it overnight but next morning it was the same and I had to unplug it from the wall and plug it back in again to get it to turn on. When I turned it on again I had lost my internet connection again, struggling to get it to connect again and called cloud support who set up a crazy IP address , no working printer and hung up after sending me an e mail to instruct my ISP provider how to make changes.
Called HP printer support and they got it printing again but I have lost web services, I can log in but it say's not connected to network so I have to call cloud services again. I have a 7510e photosmart printer aswell and never had all these problems.
Call HP and get them to set it up for you, I went thru 2 full sets of XL size ink cartridges and a full stack of paper, pretty expensive with the price of ink. Good luck.

  • Streaky printing with new XL black cartridge (Photosmart 7520)

I installed a new HP XL black cartridge in the Photosmart 7520 about 10 days ago.  Today the black and white text printing I mostly do started becoming unreadable - streaky, smudged, faint - even though the ink level report shows about 3/4 full for black (of course the report itself printed with streaks, etc.) I removed and re-inserted the black cartridge to make sure it was seated properly (it was and it is) and then I ran the clean cartridges function on the printer. The print quality report came back looking good (including alignment) except that the black area was streaky. After getting this print quality report, I tried printing text again. The first one page document printed somewhat streaky and with erratic faint areas; the second time I printed it, it was almost unreadable. Any suggestions?
    This question was solved.

Repeated cleanings and then using the "align printer" function seemed to do the trick.

  • Photo Quality Photosmart 7520

Verticle lines, close together, in picture.
Printing from my pictures, Windows 7 OS, to HP Photosmart 7520 all in one.
Have cleaned cartridges twice and realigned several times.  Useing "Best" setting and quality hp photo paper.
I wonder if it is the design of the printer, which has 5 ink cartridges.  Our old HP photosmart printer used two cartridges and printed perfect pictures, however, it has given up the ghost, and, thus, our new printer, which, so far, is rather disapointing.  All help apreciated.

  • Photosmart 7520 won't print color

I just purchased my Photosmart 7520 tonight.  I can not get the color or photo black cartridge to print.  The ink levels are showing as dropping but the paper/photo paper comes out blank!  I can print a plain black & white document with no color, but anytime I introduce color I get nothing.  Even the alignment page does not have color on it.  Help! I'm so frustrated and don't want to continue to waste ink printing air!
