thanks for this...i thought mac was the bees knees which is why i converted..ah well..i suppose chuck out the photosmart (which is actually sold at the mac shop...which seems unfair) and look for a a new scanner...can anyone suggest a reasonably priced one that will work with a mac

If the power cable is plugged into a surge protector, or directly to the wall outlet. Issues when Connected to an Uninterruptible Power Supply/Power Strip/Surge Protector. This applies to Inkjet printers as well.
If you make a copy, and lift the lid, do you see a light come on and the scanner bar move?

On my photosmart C4200 series printer, error message says USB not connected

I have a hp photosmart C4200 series it's saying the USB not connected. I made sure all connections were secure and still same message. I unplugged it and then plugged back in at tower and printer, still same. I changed out cable, still same problem. Is there anything else I can do aside from buying a new printer? Thanks, Jenn

I noticed that you are getting the error message that says your USB is not connected with your HP Photosmart c4200 series.
For further assistance, I will need some more information:
The Product/Model Number of your printer. Follow instructions in this link. Finding Your HP Product Model Number.
If you are using a Windows or Mac Operating System, and the version number. To find the exact version, visit this link. Whatsmyos.
If the printer is able to make copies.

My printer says print cartridge(s) missing or not detected. I have a HP Photosmart C4200. The cartridges were working. I popped the cart.'s out

My printer says print cartridge(s) missing or not detected. I have a HP Photosmart C4200 & the cartridges have worked in the past. I have popped the cartridges out & back in to get it to print twice, but now that doesn't work. Is the problem in my printer or have the drivers installed on my iMac become corrupted? I have the CD that came with the printer but to reinstall the drivers I would need to uninstall the ones on my iMac. I don't know how to do that. Does anyone know how to uninstall printer drivers? My OS is OSx but I don't know which version. My iMac is 3.5 years old.

Can't connect Airport Express & a HP Photosmart c4200 Printer

I think these discussion boards are great. I was hoping someone could possibly shed some light on a small issue I'm having connecting an Airport Express & a HP Photosmart c4200 Printer.
I have the Printer hooked up to the Airport Express, but when I go to print, I get a message telling me my printer is offline. My Airport express recognizes the printer and I have the printer on. I'm not quite sure what the problem is.
I'm relatively new to this so any help that someone could provide would be greatly appreciated.

Is printer is detected in airport utility?
Is green light ON on your airport extreme? or orange light flashing?
Some printers are not compatible with airport extreme.
I had the same problem with my brother printer, all I did was turned my firewall off & restared the computer and airport extreme..wallah it worked than I turned my firewall back on.

Photosmart C4200 Printer - Ink Cartridges

Hi all,
Perhaps a dumb question but I wanted to check. I want to buy new ink cartridges for my Photosmart C4200. I have usually bought the standard 350/351 cartridges but was wondering if I can buy the 350XL & 351XL ones instead? Will they fit?

Can't Scan: HP Photosmart C4200

Hello-I've looked thru this discussion forum and cannot find my exact answer. I have an HP Photosmart All in One C4200 Printer. When it's connected to my MAC (10.6.4) it prints and scans fine. I recently bought a airport express so that I can print thru the network. However, now I cannot scan.
when I go thru system preferences, the network printer is listed, but there is no print/scan button. When I click Open Print Queue, there is not Import Image. I click on Options & Supplies while the network printer is connected, Utility tab, Open Printer Utility, and it's not able to connect to printer ("Printer is currently unavailable, please check if it is turned on and connected"). I know that it is connected because I printed a test page.
I try to hit the scan button on the printer itself and its says that it's not connected. I go to HP Scan Pro, and says "Error, Sorry Scanner could not be initialized (Scanner not found)."
I've read that possible this printer is not supported to scan thru the network? Please help!

OS X 10.4.11 and HP Photosmart C4200 All-in-one

After about a year of everything working fine, the HP Photosmart all in one now only prints. I cannot scan or copy. When I scan or copy, it creates a solid black image.
I reinstalled the drivers from the HP website, but the problems persists. Any help would be greatly appreciated!

Did you repair permissions and restarted your computer after the reinstallation? If so, suggest that you either read the troubleshooting section of the printer's user manual and/or contact HP customer tech support on HP's website.
Have you tried the GIMP drivers?

Hp photosmart c4200 printer

My printers is showing I have a missing black cartridge. I have replaced it with a new one, cleaned the connections & it still shows I am missing this cartridge. Any ideas?

Did you try an alignment of your new cartridge?
Most probably the printhead on the printer itself is causing the problem and since the printhead on this printer is integrated, there's no way for us to replace it but this printer may need replacement if it still fails on detecting the black ink cartridge.

Photosmart C4200 Series updates on every boot Widows Vista

Why why why???
It's making me crazy.!!!
Every time I boot up, re-boot or bring the PC out of sleep, there it is - HP Update wants to download drivers.
How do I kill it?

Sorry folks, I caused the problem trying out a free system that was very confusing to use. I found out what the problem was and felt to tell you in case any others run into the same dilemma. I downloaded a so-called free antivirus detector offered from IOBit 360 called "RETURNil (virtual) System 2010" (free for 30 days) which acted like a cancer imbedded in the system causing the problems It must work to treat all other spyware, malware, adware and virus detectors like interferring software there by not allowing them to update since it thinks that the updates are compromising software. I think it might have worked ok if I had turned OFF all of these detection programs when using the RETURNil software.
To add insult to injury, it would not allow windows to delete it - you had to go into the program and uncheck all checkmarks, turn off all the detection programs on your computer and re-boot. Only then would it enable Windows to delete the system. After it was removed, everything was back to normal and all updates worked as designed.
Sorry for the panic and hope others who download "RETURNil (virtual) System 2010" understand that it could cause problems if not utilized as programmed. I am sure it is a well designed antivirus, antimalware, antiadware & etc that does a great job watching over all aspects of your PC, but one needs to be cognizant of how to use it properly and not as I attempted.
Also, this program would not let you use the Restore Function - when you tried to restore to an ealier restore point, you received a message "the shadow copy provider timed out while flushing data to the volume being shadow copied (0X80042313). After I got rid of RETURNil, the restore worked fine. So, be careful and understand this antivirus detector - virtual must mean its always there alive looking over your system and may be too invasive for some.

[Solved] First installation: HP Photosmart C4280 - Epson EPL-4200L

this is my first post in the forum since two day ago have removed kubuntu and installed arch. Thanks the awesome wiki I was able to configure lvm, wireless, bluetooth, graphics, etc but have great problems configuring my two printers.
I have installed, as in wiki,
cups
ghostscript
gsfonts
gutenprint
foomatic-db
foomatic-db-engine
foomatic-db-nonfree
foomatic-filters
hplip
cups-pdf
have added cups to the DAEMONS array in rc.conf and my account to lp group and edited /etc/cups/cupsd.conf so now I have SystemGroup lp
**Epson EPL-4200L**
It's a laser print working on parallel port. Was not necessary add in rc.conf lp, parport, parport_pc modules since they are loaded automatically.
Obviously neither kde systemsetting printer applet nor cups web interface find my printer. Here some output of dmesg:

It's a combo (printer/scanner) connected through usb. In lsusb I have:

I've blacklisted usblp in /etc/rc.conf and changed device node permission. Since:

have created /etc/udev/rules.d/10-usbprinter.rules and inserted this:

I have made an attempt using hp tools: with sudo have launched hp-setup and it finds the printer but clicking on "Printer test page" nothing appens; the same from hp-toolbox.

Solved! It was probably a permission problem; used to kubuntu I had added my account to sudoers and blocked root so during printer configuration i used my account/password as credentials; even if they are accepted there is a problem with sudo configuration that make it unusable with cups; so root account is necessary. Using root make other settings useless: inserting !usblp in rc.conf, modify device node permission. Adding own account to lp group is enough.
To use HP scanner add your account to scanner group and uncomment hpaio line in /etc/sane.d/dll.conf

How do I get a download from Apple to allow HP Photosmart C4200 for my Snow Leapard

Need to install photosmart C4480, no disk.

I got my dad's printer and it is a HP photosmart C4480 and it was better than my HP photosmart C4200 which stopped functioning. I tried to install the new printer w/o a disk and on the look up under printers I cannot find the HP photosmart C4480 series. Does anyone know what other printer I can install that is comparable to this one or how I can install this printer. I really would appreciate the help. I am disabled and need to save wherever I can!

HP Photosmart C4280_Error in printing

My name is Alex, i just recently switched to a mac and im loving it. However I now have printer problems. At first my printer was printing fine, but now it has problems. I think after i got the new software update (OS X 10.6.2). I opened the queue for the printer and it says error. so i checked the logs and all it tells me is this every time i want to print:

i changed the driver to a generic and it prints, but in black and white only. i would like it to print in color like it used to so my school projects look good instead dull.
so i tried downloading the drivers from HP and i still get the same messages...
Is there anything that i can do to fix this problem?
im open to all suggestions.

System Preferences->Print & Fax->select the printer and click the minus sign. Turn off the printer, quit System Preferences. Turn on the printer, System Preferences->Print & Fax->select the printer (click on the plus sign), and set it as the default pringer. Then, System Profiler->Printers and you should see this (I have the 4280):
*HP Photosmart C4200 series:*

+Default: Yes+

Xsane and Photosmart C4280 I can print but don't scan

hey,
after some problems with hplip i'm finally able to print, but when i try to scan i get only this reply
scanimage: open of device hpaio:/usb/Photosmart_C4200_series?serial=MY79LMM3DT04VP failed: Device busy
scanimage -L shows the scanner
device `hpaio:/usb/Photosmart_C4200_series?serial=MY79LMM3DT04VP' is a Hewlett-Packard Photosmart_C4200_series all-in-one
"sane-find-scanner", too
found USB scanner (vendor=0x03f0 [HP], product=0x5c11 [Photosmart C4200 series]) at libusb:005:002
i already tried
#If you want to use this driver with sane: # echo "hpaio" >> /etc/sane.d/dll.conf
but it doesn't work, so what can i do, or what do you need know further?
