[HP Photosmart C4480] Resetting NVM

Hi, I've always been satisfied by this printer, simple to setup and really "plug and play". I recently started to print more often and suddenly, the printer complained about an "Incompatible cartridge".It was very weird because I was printing a 50 pages document and the error occured at the 9th or 10th page without any reason. I tried replacing the cartridge with another one, cleaning them up and rebooting the printer : no change.I googled the error message and found doing a "Semi-Full Reset" could help .. without success. I tried every combination at the "Enter Special Key Combo" and found several menus.I found some jokes like "Underware" and "Fix me!" (I love easter eggs) but also some very promising items like "clear nvm", several "disp xXx ID", "selftest", "counter", "enter serial number"... As my title suggests, my last attempt to solve my issue is to reset the NVM.Doing it should reset all parameters to their default value and the printer should return to the same state as when I bought it. The fact is that when I do "clear NVM", the printer displays the following message : "It is not default serial number. Failed to reset NVM".I checked the serial number printed on the back of the printer and compared it with what "serial number" (Information menu) displays. They match but the latter is longer and I don't know where the last 4 numbers come from. I found the menu which let me change the serial number but as I don't know what "default" serial to enter, I'm stuck. So I would like to know what serial number to input or more generally how to reset the non volatile memory of my printer.Should the instructions depends on the serial number of my printer, you can send me a PM. I hope my post is clear enough and may help other people solving this infamous "Incompatible cartridge" error. If you need more info, just let me know. Regards,

I finally found an easy way to reset the NVM. I put an SD card in the printer, held on the Cancel (red X) and the Power Button and pressed the Blue, Grey and Green button (in that order) to have access to the "Underware" menu. There, I went into the "photo menu" and pressed OK on the "dump nvm=>file" item.I put the SD card in my laptop and edited the NVM_0001.DMP file (in the NVM2 folder) with an hexadecimal editor.I replaced every value by 0 so the NVM dump was full of zeroes.I renamed the file to NVM_RAW.DMP and put the SD card in the printer.I did the same as above to get access to the "photo menu" but instead of dumping the NVM to a file, I did the opposite with "dump file=>nvm". I restarted the printer and voilà! NB: It didn't solve the "Incompatible cartridge" issue but at least, internal counters are now at 0 !!

  • How can I reset my Photosmart C4480 to factory default? It stops halfway into printing the page.

My Photosmart C4480 printer only prints a couple of paragraphs and stop. I go to my iMAC's Preferences, open print and Fax and click "resume." It prints a couple of lines and stops again. I have entered the CD and reinstalled the printer, to no avail. Any way to reset the printer to factory default?

Before you reset the hardware, are you able to successfully make a copy from the glass?
If you can, this printer is NOT having a hardware issue, if it can't then I will look up the reset.

  • Can't scan from Solution Center, using an HP Photosmart C4480 all in one

I bought a C4480 from a friend, did not come with the software CD. I downloaded the full-feature software package from the HP site. It prints from solution center but when I press the scan button in solution center nothing happens. I tried uninstalling and reinstalling the software several times without success. Is there any way to fix this? Is there a software glitch and is there a patch available? Is there a way to scan without using Solutino Center? I'm running Vista 32 bit on a Dell XPS A1530.
Thanks in advance for any suggestions on what to do.

    Hello Ben,
I am sorry to see you are unable to scan from Solution Center with your Photosmart C4480. I understand you have uninstalled and reinstalled quite a few times and that did not resolve the problem. I would like to help you.
First, I recommend running HP's Print and Scan Doctor.
This is a tool used to search and help correct/target scanning and printing issues.
To answer your question, yes you are able to scan without using the Solution Center.
You can also use Paint, within any Windows operating system. (Select the top left down arrow, and choosing "From scanner or camera")
Also, you can use Windows Fax and Scan. You can find that by clicking on your start button and typing "scan" in the search and it should come right up.
If you are still unable to complete a scan, please try to make a copy on the printer.
You can also try Resetting your Printer.
Feel free to write back with your findings and any other questions or comments you may have.
    Good luck!

  • After the new 10.9.2 Maverick upgrade, my Photosmart C4480 3 in 1 printer can not scan and save the file to desktop or documents.  You can only see the image in the print preview area. Does anyone know how to fix this or when a fix will be out?

After Aple support downloaded the new 10.9.2 Maverick upgrade on my MacBook Air, my Photosmart C4480 3 in 1 printer can not scan a document and load the file on to my desktop or document file. (You can see the doc image in the preview but it doesn't save it.) Does anyone know an Apple fix for this or when the fix will be out?  After hours of trying reloading, and the usual fixes, etc. Apple told me to call HP, and HP told me they don't support Mac.  It does not seem honorable of Apple to put out an upgrade and not tell people it will destroy their scanning ability, and that the only thing to do is to buy another printer/scanner.

Have you tried using Applications/Image Capture to scan.

    Welcome to the HP Forums.
I understand that your HP Photosmart c4480 can't scan with your Windows 7 Operating System.
I have some questions for you:
1.) How is the printer connected? Wireless or USB cable?
2.) Are you scanning from the printer, or from the PC?

  • HP Photosmart C4480 does not scan in OSX 10.8.2

When I try to scan using my HP Photosmart C4480 (v9.6)  I get an error message " Sorry, scanner could not be initialized (Scanner not found). So, scanner function does not work using the "Photosmart Studio" application which is part of the application package. The printer works fine, I can "Scan to Print" and "Scan to OCR" using the menu on the printer itself as well but the functionality is limited.
I tried installing the latest print driver from HP (downloaded from the Apple Updates) HewlettPackardPrint2.13.dmg but ScanUtility does not find the update.
I did this twice, rebooting, etc., and no success.
Perhaps, this HP version/series not  supported by Mountain Lion? I got this HP Photosmart C4480 All-in-One free at the Mac store in late 2008 when they were "giving them away" with a purchase of the MacBook Pro. Any ideas, anyone? Thanks, A

  • Problem with HP Photosmart C4480

I've just recently bought a Photosmart C4480.  I replaced the ink cartridge with the 99 photo cartridge, which fill the right side and  which means that there is only one ink cartridge inside my printer.
I try to print a photo but realised it came out black and white without any colour.  Do I need to buy another cartridge for the left side space?  If yes, which cartridge should I buy to coordinate with this 99 photo cartridge?
I would appreciate if anyone here can help me up with a solution.

    Hello Wildviolets
If the printer was having noise and now won't work at all then it sounds like the printer may have had a hardware problem. As for the ink if they are Genuine HP ink and you just purchased them they should still be in warranty. If you purchase a new HP printer that doesn't use those cartridges, you should be able to call HP they should be able to replace any unopened ink cartridges that are in warranty for other HP ink cartridges that will work with your new printer.
    Hello Larrycza
It does sound good for the printer. Have you tried running the HP Hardware Diagnostic Utility? It may be able to determine which component or problem is occurring.

  • HP PhotoSmart C4480 In Snow Leopard

My HP all in one PhotoSmart C4480 prints perfectly fine in Snow Leopard but when I try to scan from the printer it says "Scan Error. Try from computer or see documentation". Then when I try to scan from the computer the app fails to open. I've reinstalled the drivers from the HP website and from the included CD in the printer box but it still does the same thing. My scanner worked perfectly fine in Leopard but not in Snow Leopard. I can usually fix this stuff but I think the drivers are not compatible with Snow Leopard. Also when I try to scan from the system preferences menu it ends up saying no scanner selected. Please tell me if you are having the same problem with your HP all in one and if you found a solution. Thanks.

Specifically, HP Scan Pro and Device Manager that came with your All-in-One are not supported in Snow Leopard. Also not supported at the moment is button support, but that will be very shortly (I expect less then a week, but it could be a little bit more).
That being said, you should be able to Scan from the Printer browser (the thing that shows up in the dock), the Print & Fax System Preference, Preview, and Image Capture. Support for all of these applications (and several third party ones) are include with Snow Leopard.
As for importing images into iPhoto, you'll notice from my FAQ entry that if you are trying to import from a card slot on a network device, iPhoto/Image Capture/etc. under Snow Leopard do not support this. The work around is to mount the memory card on your desktop and use the "Import to Library..." option under the file menu. Other apps should have a similar option.
    Just trying to help.

  • Photosmart c4480 prints 2nd half of picture pink

I put new non-hp ink cartridges in--documents in black and white print fine, but pictures print the first part of the picture correctly  but  about halfway thru the printing becomes pink. I've tried cleaning and testing the print; things seem fine. I don't know what else to do. Can anyone steer me in the right direction?

Hello , Welcome to the HP Support Forums!
I understand that since installing non-genuine cartridges in your HP Photosmart C4480 All-in-One Printer you have been experiencing print quality issues when printing in colour ink. I would like to assist you today with resolving this print quality issue. Keep in mind that the ink in non-genuine or refilled cartridges are not tested within your machine. Therefore, HP cannot guarantee the quality or reliability of non-HP ink cartridges or refilled ink cartridges. For your records,  QualityLogic, one of the world's foremost quality assurance organizations, tested the performance of HP inkjet print cartridges vs. remanufactured (refilled) brands. The results: original HP inkjet print cartridges far surpassed ink refills in both print quality and reliability. Nearly one out of every six refilled ink cartridges tested was dead on arrival or failed prematurely70% of refilled cartridges had some form of reliability problemCount on HP original ink cartridges for consistent, worry-free printing. You may think you're saving money on remanufactured or refilled ink cartridges, but in the long run, the cost of wasted time, ink, and paper can more than make up the difference.  - Source  With that being said, there are a few troubleshooting steps that I will have you perform to resolve this print quality issue.  Please click here to access the print quality troubleshooting steps. Once the support document opens please complete the listed solutions to resolve this quality issue. Once troubleshooting is complete please test printing to confirm that the issue has been resolved. Should the issue persist, you may need to try Genuine HP cartridges in your product.  Please respond to this post with the result of your troubleshooting. I look forward to hearing from you. Good luck! : )

  • MacBook Does Not See HP Photosmart C4480 Connected to Airport Express

I have an AT&T 2wire wireless & router as my internet access. Today I turned off the 2wire wireless and was able to set up an Apple-based home network with an Airport Extreme Base Station and Airport Express which I configured to extend the AEBS network. Both the AEBS and Airport Express show "green" for setup.
    iTunes sees the Airport Express.
The Airport Express sees a HP Photosmart C4480 printer I have connected to it via the USB port.
    - I do not have the C4480 driver installed on the MacBook.
PROBLEM: The Macbook sees the AEBS and Airport Express but DOES NOT see the HP printer connected to the Airport Express. When I go to System Preferences > Printer > Add Printer it does not see the HP and I don't know the IP address to add it. What can anyone recommend?
    Thank you

Apple Tech Support solved this problem quickly and easily. In short, the USB connected printer was pointed to the computer and not the Airport Express. Here's what they ran me through:
    - Assumes the Airport Express sees the printer as connected via USB
    1. Open System Preferences > Print & Fax
    2. Regardless of the printers you see, click the "+" button to add a printer
    3. Select the Default icon
    4. Check the Kind... should be Bonjour
    5. Select the printer type connected to the Airport Express... the system will start to add such a printer
    6. Ensure the Location is the Airport Express (mine was previously pointed to the MacBook)
-- You can change the name here is you like also such as "Kitchen HP Photosmart c4480)... recommend a different name than the original one installed so you know which one to remove later
    7. Select Add
    8. Remove the original printer which is pointing to the MacBook
You should be good to go.... Key points: Bonjour and Location as the Airport Express

  • Need to install photosmart C4480, no disk.

I got my dad's printer and it is a HP photosmart C4480 and it was better than my HP photosmart C4200 which stopped functioning. I tried to install the new printer w/o a disk and on the look up under printers I cannot find the HP photosmart C4480 series. Does anyone know what other printer I can install that is comparable to this one or how I can install this printer. I really would appreciate the help. I am disabled and need to save wherever I can!

  • Photosmart C4480 - Problems sharing between XP and Vista

I have my Photosmart C4480 connected via USB to my desktop which is running Windows XP. I have a home network set up between this desktop and my laptop which is running Windows Vista 32-bit. File sharing works and the computers can succesfully ping each other so no problem there.
I have the printer set to share in XP, but Vista does not see the printer on the network. I installed the printer drivers on both computers.
I know this isn't where it goes, but perhaps someone will read it. I called tech support and spent 57 minutes on the phone and got nowhere. No less than 40 minutes of the 57 were spent in complete silence. The only step the tech support rep asked me to do was to download the newest drivers on the laptop, but then told me not to install them. After 57 minutes, he sent me an e-mail containing a link to the specs for the printer. He asked me to read to him what it said next to "Connectivity" which was of course USB 2.0. I had already tried to explain once to the gentleman the difference between a wireless printer and a printer being shared over a wireless network. Clearly he never got the picture. After I read the connectivity option of USB 2.0 to the guy, he remarked that the printer could not be used on any wireless network. So frustrating. Very, very dissappointed in HP tech support.Very, very unlikely that I will purchase another HP product.
    Someone please help me.
    This question was solved.
    View Solution.

I'm going to go through this very detailed and try to assume that you have no idea what you are doing so that the directions are clear and easy for anyone to understand.
    1. You need to first install the printer on the computer that it will be connected to via USB (the Windows XP computer in my example). Follow the exact instructions provided with the printer for best results. The directions are easy and clear and the steps need to be completed in the order they advise for proper installation.
    2. After you have the printer installed and working correctly on the computer the printer is directly connected to via USB, use the installation CD to install all the drivers on the computer that you want to access the printer via your home network (the Windows Vista computer in my example). When you put the provided installation CD in this computer click on Install or Setup or whatever similar option you are given on the menu. When you get near the end of the installation process, the setup prompts you to either connect the printer to the computer or to proceed and finish installation without connecting. You want to finish installation without connecting the printer.
    3. Now that you have all of the appropriate drivers installed on both computers you want to set up your network. On the computer that has the printer directly connected (the Windows XP computer in my case), you want to run the Network Setup Wizard in order to set up printer sharing. In Windows XP, you want to click Start >> My Network Places. This will open up the My Network Places window. In this window on the left side you should see some options under the heading "Network Tasks". Click on "Set up a home or small office network". This will open the Network Setup Wizard. You will notice that one of the bulleted items listed for what you can do with a network is "Share a printer". Follow and complete all of the steps of the Network Setup Wizard. Once you have completed this, your network should be set up and ready to go.
    4. Now you want to turn on sharing for the Photosmart C4480. Once again on the computer that has the printer directly connected via USB (again, Windows XP computer in my example), you want to click Start >> Control Panel >>  Printers and Faxes. In this menu you should see your newly installed Photosmart C4480 printer. Right-click on this printer and select "Properties". This will open up the HP Photosmart C4400 series Properties window. You will notice that the window has several tabs at the top. Click on the "Sharing" tab. Select "Share this printer" and give the printer a name in the "Share name:" text box. Don't make the name complicated. I used "HP-C4480" for mine. Click "OK" to close the window and save the changes.
    5. You need to find out what the IP address of the computer with the printer directly connected via USB is so that we can make sure your network is set up properly and that the other computer (running Windows Vista in my example) is able to properly communicate with the Windows XP computer. On the Windows XP computer that is connected to the printer, click Start >> All Programs >> Accessories >> Command Prompt. This will open up the Command Prompt window. Type "ipconfig" and press enter. This will show you your IP Address, Subnet Mask, and Default Gateway. Write down your IP address. It will be a series of four number separated by three periods (for example 192.178.1.2). You can close the command prompt window now.
    6. Now you need to find out what this computer's name is on the network. Click the Start button and then right-click on "My Computer" and select properties. This will open the "System Properties" window. You will notice that there are several tabs at the top of this window. Select the "Computer Name" tab. The name of this tab can vary from computer to computer, but there will be a tab named "Computer Name" or "Network Name" or something similar. Select that tab. On this tab you will see "Full computer name:" and then to the right of that will be your computer's name on the network (DESKTOP for example). Write this down. Click "OK" to close this window.
    7. Now you are done on the computer that has the printer directly connected via USB. Get on your other computer (the Windows Vista computer in my example). In Windows Vista click Start >> Accessories >> Command Prompt. This will open up the Command Prompt window. Type "ping IPaddress" and press enter. Put your IP address (for example 192.178.1.2) where I typed "IPaddress". This tests the communication between the two computers and will display the results after the test is done. Hopefully it will say something like 4 packets sent, 4 packets received, 0% lost. If packets were sent but not received then you have a network problem that must be sorted out before you printer is going to work.
    8. Assuming that the ping was successful, you are almost done. Close the Command Prompt window. Still on the Windows Vista computer (the computer not directly connected to the printer via USB), click Start >> Network. This will open up the "Network" window. Now your computer will search and display everything found on your network. This may take a minute or two so be patient if nothing shows up immediately. Eventually the other computer's name should be displayed (DESKTOP for example). Double click the icon above your other computer's name. This should now display a list of everything on the other computer that is shared over the network. Common things to see here are printers and a "SharedDocs" folder. You should see the HP Photosmart C4480 listed here. It will be listed under whatever name you gave to the printer in step 4 above. Right-click on the icon for the printer and select "Connect".
    9. This will open up the "Windows Printer Installation" window and will say "Connecting to PRINTERNAME on COMPUTERNAME". I cannot recall exactly what happens the first time you do this, but it may prompt you for some installation and such. If so, just follow whatever steps it gives you and it should successfully connect to the printer.
    10. At this point you are ready to go. You should now be able to open up Microsoft Word or any other program and print to the HP Photosmart C4480 printer from the Windows Vista computer over your network. The Photosmart C4480 will most likely not already be set as your default printer so you will have to select it from the menu on the Print window in the "Printer Name" dropdown menu. A window may open up saying that the computer is connecting to the printer when you do this. After this when you click on Print, your document should be sent over the network to the Photosmart C4480.
    11. If you want to set your Photosmart C4480 as your default printer on the computer it is not directly connected to (the Windows Vista computer in my example), click on Start >> Control Panel. This will open up the Control Panel Window. Under the "Hardware and Sound" heading, click on "Printer".  This will open the Printers window. You should see the "HP Photosmart 4400 series on COMPUTERNAME" icon in this window. Right-click on the icon and select "Set as Default Printer". After you do this you should see a green and white checkmark near the icon for the printer. The Photosmart C4480 is now set as the default printer on the computer and whenever you print from any application it will automatically have the Photosmart C4480 printer selected.
Hope this all made sense and solves your problems. Please post back and let me know if you get it working or if you have any other questions. I'll be more than happy to try and help!
