HP Photosmart C4780 scanning

Had a problem with computer yesterday caused by Norton apparently.  PC World uninstalled Norton, reinstalled and all OK. However my printer will now print and copy but not Scan?  Anyone any ideas?

Hello @mighty332,
Thank you for visiting the HP Support Forums! I see you have recently uninstalled and reinstalled the Norton program on your computer and now you are unable to scan with your HP Photosmart C4780.
I would like you to click here to download and run the Print and Scan Doctor > www.hp.com/go/tools- It was designed by HP to provide users with the troubleshooting and problem solving features needed to resolve many common problems experienced with HP print and scan products connected to Windows-based computers.
What does the PSDR find, have you tried disabling your Norton program and attempt the Scan, does this allow you to scan?
If you are still unable to scan please continue here: An 'An error occurred while communicating with scanning device' or a 'There is no computer connectio...
Let me know the following information:
1. What is your current Operating system, Windows or Mac and which version?
2. How is the printer connected, USB or Wireless?
3. Do you get any error message when you attempt to Scan?
I hope to hear from you soon.

Hello lchatt, and welcome to the HP Forums.
I see you are having scan issues. Due to the age of the printer, there is no HP software for this operating system.  The printer is running off of the Macintosh basic print driver, so not all functions are compatible or guaranteed to function.  For more information about what's supported with the basic in-OS driver, you can consult this document: OS X v10.9 Mavericks: Installing and Using the Printer on a Mac.

  • No longer able to use the scan function on Photosmart c4780

Previously when I opened my HP Photosmart C4780 Printer Scanner I would get a dialogue box which allowed me to choose whether to print or scan. This dialogue box no longer starts and I no longer get the option to select scan and can only choose to print.  I have been around the circuit of Print and Scan and Doctor and have downloaded and reinstalled the appropriate software several times all to no avail.  I can no longer find the software CD that came with the device. What do I have to do to be able to access the dialogue box which gave the opportunity to choose scan and specify the actions required?
Furthermore using Windows Fax and Scan will not work either, I simply get the message “Could not complete scan”.
The scanner does work as I can use the copy function perfectly well.

    Hi @Jumbob
    From your descriptions, it sounds to me like the issue stems from the software. Let's perform a comprehensive uninstall, clean things up and ensure updates are complete, then reinstall. Please complete the following steps and let me know the outcome;
Hold down the Windows Logo key () on the keyboard and the 'R' to open the run box, type %temp%
Delete all files and folders from the temp folder. Choose skip if any pop ups appear saying any of the files could not be deleted
Download the software and choose to save as, save to desktop > HP Photosmart C4700 All-in-One Printer series Full Feature Software and Driver
After the software downloads and extracts, open the temp folder again, use the instructions from step 1.
Look for, and open the folder starting with 7z (Example: 7zS2356)
    Open folder Util
    Open folder CCC
If you have an HP computer run the L3uninstall.exe. If you have anon-HP computer run the L4uninstall.exe
When the uninstall has completed restart the computer
Follow these steps to reset the registry settings and options for Windows Installer.
Hold down the Windows Logo key on the keyboard and the 'R' to open the run box
In the Open box, type msiexec /unregister, and then click OK.
Hold down the Windows Logo key on the keyboard and the 'R' to open the run box
In the Open box, type msiexec /regserver, and then click OK
*Note: there is a space between the c and the /
If you have any difficulty with this step, please use this link to perform it another way. Restarting Windows Installer
Run Disk cleanup from Accessories\ System Tool < How to Delete files using Disk Cleanup
Download and install the latest version of Adobe flash player http://www.adobe.com/support/flashplayer/downloads.html

  • Cannot wirelessly connect printer- HP Photosmart C4780

Hello everyone! I have scoured the internet and these forum pages for a solution, but could not find any. Anyways, I have a HP Photosmart C4780 and am unable to wirelessly print. My printer will not connect to the internet nor does it show a local network for my computer to print to. When I try to print off a Network Configuration Page, it will not let me. I click the "Ok" on the printer when that option is highlighted, however it takes my back to the wireless menu. I have an AT&T router that I believe does not have a WPS. I also have the latest software downloaded on my 2015 macbook pro. To make things more complicated, I do not have the set up wizard disk, and when I try to download the corresponding software to get the "HP Folder" on my computer, it goes through the installation process but does not show the folder once it is finished. Please help me!

Hi , I see you have been looking for a way to reconnect your c4780 wirelessly with your Mac 10.10, I have actually helped with this before. Normally, it's an easy 3 step process to reconnect the printer but because you have Mac OS X 10.10 Yosemite which uses the driver from Apple, there is no software package from HP to configure the wireless.
So here's how you can do this;  Step 1:  Make sure your computer is connected to the correct network. Confirm your settings for your home network; HP Printers - Find Your Wireless WEP, WPA, WPA2 Password (Mac) Step 2:  Restore the Network Defaults on the printer so it's not holding onto any old information.* To do this you should be able to touch on Setup [Scan] front of the printer then choose Network and then Restore Network Defaults Note: If your wireless radio is not working correctly, let me know and I will send you a different reset in a private message.  Step 3:  This would normally be to use a USB cable and your printer software to configure the printer back onto the network but you will need to follow the directions from this similar post, copied here for you below; After you Restore Network Defaults, the radio will turn off (the blue LED will go out.) You may need to press the wireless button again to Enable Wireless (light should be flashing.) Put the computer on the printers network (temporary)1. Click on the Airport symbol on the top left side of the Mac screen
    2. Choose the network that look relative to the printer (might say HP setup or some variation of your printer name) - it may take a few minutes for it to appear Print the wireless network test - wait a few minutes to ensure the and computer have established an adhoc connection otherwise the report will not have an IP addressPress the Scan button (it also the Wireless menu button)Select Wireless SettingsNavigate to Wireless Test and select. The Wireless Network Test prints, look for and note the IP address. Open an Internet browser (Safari) and enter the IP address into the URL (address bar). Click on the network tab, on the left click on wireless or 802.11. At this point we are looking fore "start wizard" should be on the right hand side. Now just follow the on-screen prompts to configure your printer to the network.    Once we have successful configured the printer for your network you can put your computer back on your own network. Now you can add the printer to the System Preferences and print. (If you are unsure of how to do this see; Add or remove a printer.   Please let me know if these steps resolved your issue, or if there is anything else I can do to help.  I look forward to hearing from you!   Thanks,

  • WiFi connection problem from HP Photosmart C4780 to MacBook Pro

I have an HP Photosmart C4780 that will not connection to my MacBook Pro.  I am operating on the Mac OS X 10.6.8.  It was working just fine when I was using my Apple Airport to project the WiFi in my house, but I recently bought a Apple Time Machine to back up my system and have a main networok and guest network for the house.  When I switched to the new device, I am now unable to get my printer to reconnect via WiFi.  I have downloaded all of the recommended software from the HP site.
When I click on set up wireless connect, it starts the first step to find the device and then I wait and wait.  It just sits and spins and never finds the device.  Yes I have it plugged in and turned on.  I did not have any problems with this prior to switch the router for the WiFi so I am guessing it has to do with that, but I am lost on what to do.  Please Help

Welcome to the HP Forums FlyGirl_1350,
I see by your post that you now have the Apple Time Machine and aren't able to setup the printer again on the network.
I can help you with this issue.
Follow these steps to restore your product's network default settings. This will clear out the old router encryption.
Touch the ATM button () next to Wireless / Scan.
Touch the ATM button () next to Wireless Menu.
Touch the ATM button () next to Wireless Settings.
Use the up and down ATM buttons () to select Restore Network Defaults, and then press OK.
Touch the ATM button () next to Yes to confirm your selection.
Make sure the computer is connected to the Main Network Name and not the Guest Network name.
Vice Versa. Sometimes the printer won't pick up the Guest Network to configure the wireless.
    Run the setup again.
This document provides steps for setting up the printer on the network also.
Installing the Printer Software for a Wireless Network Connection (Using an Access Point).
If you are still having issues then power cycle all the devices in this order, power cycle the router, wait till it is back up again, turn the computer off and on again, turn the printer off and disconnect the power cable for 30 seconds, then reconnect it again.
If there is anything else that I can help you with just let me know.
    Have a nice day!
    Thank You.

  • Photosmart C4780 install fails at "system cannot find specified file"

My problem started simply with the printer, an HP Photosmart C4780 which has always had a wireless connection and would not print.  At first, the network connection checked out fine from the printer control panel.  I ran a Microsoft printer troubleshooter, which found a block in the print queue, and cleared it.  The first test page would not print, but the "inner test page" did print.  I didn't understand whatever that meant, so I looked for help from the HP site.
I ran the HP Print and Scan Doctor, and it suggested I reinstall the driver.  I downloaded and saved the current one from HP (PS_AIO_06_C4700_USW_Full_Win_enu_140_175.exe) and then uninstalled the existing driver.  When I attempted to install the new one, a window popped up saying, "The system cannot find the specified file," with only one box to click which said simply "OK".  The installation went through to "review installation options", after which came “checking updates, downloading updates, installing updates” and then it was while “checking system” that the “cannot find the file” window popped up, and when I clicked “OK”, the installation window as well as the error message box, just disappeared.  What I assume was the file path was in the frame of the window, but the whole thing didn't fit so it didn't show the end.  What I could read was “C:\Users\ … \Local\Temp\7zS588E\Setup\.\Setup\hpzpnp40 …
I found one topic on the same problem for the same model printer in the forum, which offered this fix:
You will need to first complete a level 3 uninstall of the software. I have included the steps below for this.
    1. Press the Windows key, and the letter R
    2. Type %temp%, and click OK
    3. Open the 7z folder (most recent one if there are multiples)
    4. Open the util folder
    5. Open the ccc folder
    6. Double click on the Uninstall_L3
Once the Uninstall_L3 has completed, please delete all items listed in the temp folder. Note, you will  not be able to to delete all items, please skip the ones that you cannot. Next please empty the trash, and perform a clean boot. I have included the document 'How to perform a clean boot in Windows'. If your computer does not request it, please restart your computer.
Once your computer is back up, you will need to reinstall the printers software. You can either do this by using the Installation CD, or downloading the software.
I did what was suggested, until it got to the point where it said it did not recommend removing any further items if I intended on using the HP Officejet printer (yes I have a second HP printer attached to the network) anytime in the future.  Not really understanding how this all works, I decided to stop what I was doing, so unfortunately it did not solve my problem.
Do I need to uninstall both HP printers before I can reinstall one?  And if I do that, is there any reason I would not be able to reinstall both printers?  Sounds like I'm asking for trouble.  Bottom line... I still cannot install the driver.
I have tried to install both the full and basic versions of the driver and always get the same result.
I have an HP Pavilion dv6-3100t notebook, running Windows 7 Home Premium, version 6.1.7601 service pack 1, 64 bit.  I haven't installed any new hardware or software.  This printer has always had a wireless connection.  The router I use is a Netgear 54 Mbps WGR614 v6 (supplied by my cable company), and the network includes not only my notebook and the Photosmart printer, but also an ASUS desktop, another HP printer, an Officejet 6300 series (used only for printing graphics and photos with a wired connection to the router), and a Vizio smart-TV.  I use Norton 360 Premier Edition and disabled the anti-virus auto-protect when I downloaded and attempted to install the driver.
Please help!  And thanks in advance for your time and attention.
    This question was solved.

  • Scanner not working HP Photosmart C4780

I have OS X 10.9.5 and a HP Photosmart C4780 printer.  I'm trying to scan something to a pdf and I'm getting a black image.  When I scan an 8.5 x 11 size document as an image it only scans 1/4 of the document.  Please let me know if there is a driver that will fix this. Thanks.

  • Cannot connect Photosmart C4780 to wireless network

    Hi.
I have a HP Photosmart C4780 printer that I'm trying to connect to our wireless network, from my Mac (OS X 10.8.4)
I am trying to install the printer on my MacBook using the CD provided with the printer.  The software installs, and then I get stuck at the setup. I get the message "No Wireless Network Discovered". I check the box saying " type in our network name, and get the message "Device Not Connected: To configure the network settings of the selected device, please connect it temporarily via USB. The device can be disconnected from the USB once the network settings are transferred."  I plug the USB cable into my Mac, hit "OK", then "Continue".
Now the message I get is: "Network Unavailable: The selected Wi-Fi Network "xxx" is not within the reach of the device." (Note: the device is about a foot away from the router).  Hitting "Retry" yeilds the same error message - and I'm stuck.
The wireless function on the printer is on. I restored the network default settings on the printer. The router is a D-Link DIR-826L Wireless N600 Dual Band Gigabit Cloud Router.  The router is new to us - we had no issues with our old D-Link router (but it died so had to be replaced).
    Any help would be appreciated!

    cmd1979,
In order to get this installed wirelessly you will need three things
    1.) Windows OS system
    2.)USB cord
3.) Full feature software from the HP website
    http://h10025.www1.hp.com/ewfrf/wc/softwareCategory?cc=us&dlc=en&lang=en&lc=en&product=3794615&
You can install the software on the windows system and install it USB. Then you will be able to convert the USB to wireless through the HP software. The printer will then be on the network. On the mac you will go to Settings->Print and scan->Add printer->Select your printer from the list->Choose add.
Let me know how this works for you.

  • Photosmart C4780 says wireless is on but computers say printer is not connected

My Photosmart C4780 has always been temperamental with its wireless network connection; I have had the printer replaced once already and with both machines spent several days worth of hours on the phone to HP Helpdesks trying to uninstall and reinstall the drivers and additional software for various issues - either printer or scanner not working.
Now the problem is that although the thing itself says that the wireless connection is on and working fine; none of the computers on my home network (Two PCs running Windows 7 32-bit; and two Macs running OS X Lion) are able to connect to the printer; no matter what I try it keeps saying the printer is offline.
I would happily throw the thing in the rubbish bin to stop wasting any more time on it; but I have just bought 5 new (original HP  XL) cartridges for it and would hate to waste those.
In fact the problems started when I replaced the cartridges; the alignment page at first refused to scan and when it did, it came up with an error message which unfortunately I can no longer remember exactly; something about the thing not being properly aligned and this may affect print quality.  I am assuming that this is what caused the problems; although why this would cause the computers on the network to say that the printer is offline I have no idea.  It has printed scanned images since then which came out fine; so the print quality can't have been that badly affected.
Anyway, the thing is too old now to be able to call the HP helpdesk again (all of about two years old!) so I really don't know what else to do - apart from binning it and trying to get a refund on the three unused cartridges.  Oh, and buying a different make printer, obviously!
I have previously had a Photosmart 7350 which worked beautifully for many years, until I upgraded the computer to Vista and HP could not be bothered to provide updated drivers for it. The print quality of this one was what made me decide to go for HP again - a decision I seriously regret now!
Does anyone have any ideas of how to get the thing working again; at least until I have time to properly research an alternative?
    Thank you

Thank you PrintDoc.  I'm afraid I don't completely understand your instructions.  I found the page you said to set a manual IP address, but then I got stuck:
When you say: "You need to set an IP address outside the range that the router automatically sets (called the DHCP range). If you do not know the range, change the last set of numbers (those after the last '.') to 250" what exactly do you mean?   All boxes on this page are completely blank; so what address should I put here?  Put the same address as the printer currently has, only substitute another number (like 250) for the number after the last '.' in the printer's current IP address.
And when you say: "Enter your router's IP (on the Network Config Page) for the gateway." are you talking about the IP address that is printed in the confuguration summary underneath 'network name (SSID)' and 'hardware address (MAC)' as 'IP address'?  Or would this be the address to put in above?  The gateway address will be the same as the printer's, but will end in .1
Thank you for your help so far; please clarify this.

  • HP Photosmart C4780 All-in-One Only Prints Half a Page

MacBook Pro 15.4 Laptop Model A1286
    Snow Leopard 10.6
    HP Photosmart C4780 All-in-One
    Wireless Connection
    Airport Extreme Sim Dualband
    New to wireless
Why does the wireless printer take several minutes before it prints?
Why does it print only the top banner of a web page?
Why does it print only quarter or half the page of a document or web page?
Why does it continually lapse into “pause” mode?

Do not connect a USB cable to the router.  This will confuse and defeat the wireless connection.
Let's add the printer using WPS:
FIrst, start the WPS process from the front panel of your printer (Setup [Scan] > Network > Wifi Protected Setup)  Then:
    open the Apple Airport Utility
    select your wireless router
    select Manual Setup
select Add Wireless Clients ... from the Base Station menu
Select First Attempt then press Continue.
You have to start the Apple Add Wireless Client process within two minutes of starting the printer's WPS pushbutton method. Actually, order doesn't matter ... you can start the Add Wireless Clients process on the the Apple router first then start the printer's WPS pushbutton method.
Now your printer will be connected to your router.
Because there are two printer icons in the list, let's reset the printing system again:
    - Sys Prefs, Print & Fax
    - Right (control) click in the rectangle listing your printers and select Reset Printing System.
WARNING - this will delete ALL of your printers!
    - Select the plus sign to re-add it. Look for the printer, select it and wait until the "Add" button becomes available. Click it.

  • Photosmart C4780 won't work with new Time Capsule

All of our household machines (2 MacBooks and 1 iMac) worked just fine to print wirelessly to our HP Photosmart C4780 with our time capsule, 1TB. The hard drive on that failed, and we replaced it with a new 2 TB model. Everything runs fine off the new wireless network except for the printer. The printer is not hooked to the Time Capsule, and I don't want it to be as it's in an odd location. The printer worked just fine before, off by itself in a corner, not hooked to any computers or Time Capsule. We are running OS 10.8 on 2 machines and OS 10.6 on another. I've read every troubleshooting article and community post I can find, trying everything, and no luck. I've restarted everything. I've reset the printer network settings. I've deleted all printers from the computers, but in every case, the printer cannot be detected on the wireless network. I run the Print & Scan utility in System Preferences, and the printer is not located. I run the HP Setup Assistant, and it can't find the printer. If I hook it up via USB to any machine it works fine, and I even tried running the HP Setup Assistant to setup wireless via USB, and that can't find the wireless network either. The Time Capsule is on all default settings, exept I changed the name and  password. Neither has any special characters. I tried the suggestion of channel 11 and that didn't work. I printed out the wireless network test report, and the Network Name (SSID) Found diagnostic failed. I printed out the HP Network Configuration Page and it says network Offline, URL for embedded web server is http://0.0.0.0, and the 802.11 Wireless status is Disconnected. At the bottom where it lists the Number of 802.11 networks discovered, my home wireless network is at the top of the list. I know wireless is enabled on my printer because I've disabled and enabled it, plus the blue light is on above the wireless icon.
I cannot think of anything else to try and I'm about to launch the printer out the window! Please help in any way.

You're close. After opening Airport Utility/TimeCapsule/Edit, look at the bar at the TOP of the page for Airport Utility, not at the top of the inset box. That Base Station drop down has the WP Printer option. I'm using 6.3.2. Try that.

  • Are there any updates so i can use my HP Photosmart C4780 All in One Printer wirelessly?

just wondering..are there any updates for the iMac with OS X (10.8.2) so I can use my HP Photosmart C4780 All in One (Print,Scan,Copy)?

    Hi,
An HP Full Feature Software is not available for Mountain Lion, therefore the Wireless configuration is tricky and cannot be done through the software.
To connect the printer to your wireless network you will need to create a temporary wireless ad hoc connection, then the wireless connection to your router can be configured via the EWS page:
Step one: Restore the printer's network default settings
Touch the ATM button ( ) next to Wireless / Scan .
Touch the ATM button ( ) next to Wireless Menu .
Touch the ATM button ( ) next to Wireless Settings .
Use the up and down ATM buttons ( ) to select Restore Network Defaults , and then press OK .
Touch the ATM button ( ) next to  Yes to confirm your selection.
Step two: Networkly connect the Mac to the printer by creating a temporary ad-hoc connection
From the Mac, click the Wi-Fi icon.
    Click Join other network.
    Click Show Networks.
Select the printer's SSID, it should be listed as HPSETUP or should contain HP or C4700 within its name.
    Click Connect
Allow two-three minutes to fully establish the network connection.
Step three: Connect the printer to your router via the EWS page
    Open Safari.
    Click the Bookmarks icon ()
    Click Bonjour.
Double click the printer name, the EWS page appears.
    Open the Networking tab.
From the left pane select Wireless.
Click the Start Wizard button and follow the steps to connect the printer to your router.
Step four: Reconnect the Mac to your router
From the Mac, click the Wi-Fi icon.
    Click Join other network.
    Click Show Networks.
    Select your router SSID.
    Click Connect
Allow two-three minutes to fully establish the network connection.
Now the printer should be connected to your network.
Open Print & Scan, click the Plus sign and add the printer listed as Bonjour.
btw John Galt - I this it should be spelled as OS X, please correct me if i'm wrong.. ;-)
    Hope that helps,

  • HP Photosmart C4780: Can't hook up wireless..Please Help

I just bought a brand new IMAC and a brand new HP Photosmart C4780 wireless printer and a new Linksys WRT160N wireless-NBroadband Router. I go thru all the steps to set up and than get the error message the configuration failed and the software was unable to configure my device. The error message says :
Ip Address: Failed to retrieve IP
Subnet Mask : Failed to retrieve IP
Default Gateway : Failed to retrieve IP
Preferred DNS Server: Failed to retrieve IP
Alternate DNS Server: Failed to retrieveIP
I am clueless where to go from here. Can someone please help.
    Thank You

The Linksys WRT160N has WPS (Wi-Fi Protected Setup).  If you are using WPA-PSK encryption (recommended), then you can easily connect the C4780 to your wireless network using WPS:
    1) On the Linksys router, press the WPS button that is top of the case just under the Cisco label.  When the LED on the button starts to blink,  then the WPS process has started.
    2) On the C4780 printer:
    press the Scan Button
    select Wireless Menu
    select WPS
    select Push Button
    The printer should connect.
Since you have a new iMac running Snow Leopard, then all that is left to do is to install the SW.  Open the Print & Fax applet under System Preferences and press the [+] button.  Highlight your printer and press Add.

  • Photosmart c4780

Hi there - I have a HP Photosmart C4780. I am getting a "general printer error" message. I can check supply levels etc, so the wireless connection is good. But when I try to print, scan or copy, it says to resolve the general printer error before continuing. I have tried the old switch-off, switch on again trick to no avail. On the printer's web page, it has a triangle error icon followed by status: cancelling job".  I'd be grateful for any advice.

Sure if you could give me those error messages, I might be able to figure out something with them.
In the mean time, I would recommend that you try to download the driver through Apple Software Update and see if that will help.
Before we do that, we want to uninstall any incompatible software you may have installed on your computer by running the HP Uninstaller located under Applications > HP or the Hewlett-Packard folder.
After you do that, we will want to download the drivers. The drivers for your product are available through Apple Software Update.
Before you do anything, temporarily unplug the printer's USB cord from either the printer or the computer. Next, check for any available HP Update's by clicking the Apple icon and then Software Update.
If no updates could be retrieved, download the full HP Printer Drivers v.2.14 from Apple:
    http://support.apple.com/downloads/DL907/en_US/HPPrinterDrivers2.14.dmg
Once you have completed the installation you will want to plug your printer back in. After the printer is plugged back in, go into your print settings under System Preferences > Print & Scan. To add the printer, click the plus sign. You should see your printer listed here. Select it. If underneath the printer you see "Use:”.  Make sure that says the name of your printer and not AirPrint. Click Add down in the bottom right hand corner.
    Best of luck,
    Kyle

  • Windows 10 upgrade - printer photosmart c4780 compatability?

upgraded from windows 7 to 10 without probs except that my photosmart printer c4780 will not scan nor does solutions center work.  Is my printer too old/not compatible or does anyone know where to find a printer driver for the c4780 that will work with windows 10?

Hello , Welcome to the HP Forums, and thanks for posting! I'd like to help you with your inquiry regarding Windows 10 drivers for your HP Photosmart C4780 All-in-One printer. Windows 10 has the same core operating system functions as Windows 8.1, so you can actually download and install the Windows 8.1 drivers for your Windows 10 system. Please note : If your device had full supported (not just basic print or scan)in Windows 7 or 8 then your device is supported, but may not immediately show up on hp.com for Windows 10: Please download the Win8.1 drivers and use those (they have been tested and worked with Win10) - Source I checked our website, and there is full feature software available for Windows 8.1. You can download it here -  HP Photosmart C4700 All-in-One Printer series Full Feature Software and Driver If you are having issues with the install package, try downloading and running the HP Printer Install Wizard and it will download the correct software for you. Hope this helps!
