HP Photosmart CQ521B printer offline

Hi,
I got a HP CQ521B Photosmart printer a few months ago,
It saddens me to say that it was not that easy to get it connected to the wireless and I like to consider myself as computer savy.
Anyhow I did manage to connect it and it worked fine, for about 2 months, when yesterday overtime I try to print something I get the following message:
"Printer offline"
Now the printer IS connected to the wireless, the blue light is constantly on and when I print the wireless info page  it comes up with the right connection etc, as far as I can tell.
The "Printer not connected" message appears both on a macbook and a win7 pc by the way, so it cannot be something that these devices need fixing. I would expect one of them to be working if the problem was computer related.
But then again I have been pleasently surprised may a times before when it comes to PCs...
Also I downloaded the 2x diagnostics files from the HP website and one says there is a problem with the connection (duh)  and then asks me to reboot and see if the problem persists (which it does) and the other is supposed to be a fixing application of sorts, but the green bar stops at about 1/5th of the way and just stays there.
I let it run for a good 15 min and the bar did not make any progress.
Does anyone know what is going on with the machine? I am getting a bit desperate cause the next thing to do would be to install and unistall drivers etc etc and I don't want to go down that road.
So, would anyone know why out of the blue, when everything  runs fine and smoothly the computer says:
"Printer offline"
Oh,  plugged a USB cable to the macbook as well to see if it would make any difference and guess what?
"Printer offline"
Thanks for your time and your help would be very much appreciated.
Kindest Regards,
y

Its probably not Windows firewall, but more likely your security system's firewall.  Try to disable the firewall in the security system.

  • HP PhotoSmart 6520, Printer offline, Wireless printing from Windows 8.1 and others

My parents own an HP PhotoSmart 6520. They have 3 or 4 computers. 1 Is connected to this printer via USB cable. 3 Are "connected" over wireless. The printer has the latest firmware updates according to checks from the printer front display.
    Problem is this:
    1) When first starting the printer, and the printer gets on the wifi network, all wifi-available devices can print to it over wifi. We are also able to browse to the printer config web pages to see status, and change configs as needed.
    2) After about 5 minutes of printer inactivity, all wireless clients can't print to the printer to print, and can't connect to the printer's web page. (The printer appears to be offline to each OS that uses WiFi to get Internet access.
    3) If we visit the printer control screen, physically attached to the pinter, find the network configuration, and choose to "turn off" wifi at the printer, then after off, "turn on" wifi and see an IP address get assigned, then all WiFi machines can print to the printer over WiFi. However, after 5 minutes, again, the printer is offline. No matter what or how much each WiFi-based machine sends to their printer queue/spool, the printer remains offline.
    4) If the USB-connected machine prints to the printer over USB, the printer once again becomes available over the wireless network.
The work-around is terrible. (Cycle WiFi access every time they need to print from Wireless devices.)
    Things we have tried:
    1) This is running the latest firmware according to the WebService section request to check for upgrades. They are on the latest according to the results. (no help)
    2) DHCP was the initial config for network settings. I moved to a DHCP server configuration with static IP served by printer MAC address. (No help)
    3) I switched to totally static IP address, thinking it might be a DHCP lease-time/renewal issue, or custom vendor string issues or bug. (no help)
    4) Enabled/Disabled IPv6 even though they are on a NAT-ed network with only IPv4 support. (no help)
    5) Visited printer config with web broswer, and change energy saver setting from "5 minutes" to "15 minutes" because the ~5 minute window seemed like an approximate time limit. (No help)
    6) Enable/Disable other settings through the web and restart the printer. (No help.)
    7) Suggestions listed here: http://support.hp.com/us-en/product/HP-Photosmart-6520-e-All-in-One-Printer-series/5169038/model/516... (No help)
In testing this, with static IP or not, from other machines, when we can print over WiFi to the printer, the IPv4 address is ping-able from peers on the network. After ~5 minutes pass, and the pinter goes "offline" there are no ping replies to the static or other IP address assigned to this printer. By all accounts, when the printer is "offline" it really is no longer on the WiFi network. Meanwhile, oter devices can ping each other. (All computers, smartphones, tablets, etc can all respond to ping.)
None of the other devices suffer from dropped access to the WiFi and Internet.
    Suggestions?
I do not have access to this right now, but I can walk my parents through whatever steps are needed to resolve this.
    Thanks!
    P.S. Other things tried:
    http://h30434.www3.hp.com/t5/Printer-Networking-and-Wireless/If-your-printer-drops-off-your-network/...
    1) When online, generating report, reports online
    2) When offline, report reports that it is still associated with access point
    3) Printer is about 2 feet away from the access point it is communicating with and has max-bars showing signal strength.
    4) Channel allocation for WiFi was selected based on least used channel, and works very well for all other devices on this channel.
    5) There is only one accesspoint with the name it associates with.
    6) The only options for power-saving "auto-off" we see via web pages from printer are: 5 minutes, 10 minutes, and 15 minutes, and changing to 15 minutes does not allow the printer to remain online for 14 minutes -- it still goes offline to the network after ~5 minutes -- even agfter changing this settings and power cycling the printer.
    7) No wireless extender is being used.
    8) We tried static IP, Dynamic IP, and statically assigned DHCP served IP.
Once printer is "offline" when visiting printer to tell printer to disable WiFi access, then re-enable it, all machines with items in their printer queue/spool *immediately* de-queue/de-spool their printer jobs to the printer.

    Hi @TheSynAck,
I see you are using a Hot Spot, I believe we have found the reason for the connectivity issues. There may be a setting that needs to manually configured for the Hotspot to 'allow' your printer access. Also, hotspots may have limitations and restrictions that may cause connectivity issues.
Take a look here: Setting up the Printer as a HotSpot, it shows a Laserjet but the same steps apply.
Keep in mind that Hotspot connections are 'best effort' connections due to the issues of inconsistencies within the connection. They are not routers. Therefore, you may experience issues in the future when using the Hotspot for your connection. Usually a powercycle or hard reset of the HotSpot will resolve such issues.
I would not recommend getting another Hot Spot as the connection is not guaranteed, you could however try a Wireless Router if you are looking to upgrade anyways.
With the PS 6520 you also have the ability to print using the HP Wireless Direct printing option. Please click on the link below to get started:

I hope this gives you a better understanding of the intermittent connection issues.

  • HP Photosmart 6520 - shows offline and has stopped rotating printing for short-edge binding

I have suddenly had some issues with my HP Photosmart 6520 printer. I use a wireless connection with my Macbook Pro (OSX 10.9.5)
First problem is that the printer icon in the dock has recently shown to be offline/not connected. The printer would print pages of documents in the computer (Open Office stuff) but would not print material direct from a web browser. Now (a few days later) it showed to be offline and wouldn't print anything.
I should point out that the printer device list in System Preferences shows two different entries: one is "HP Photosmart series 6520" (listed as offline) - and the second is "Photosmart 6520 series (FDA82D)" (listed as idle).
The first ("HP Photosmart series 6520") had been ticked as the default printer.  I then ticked "Photosmart 6520 series (FDA82D)" to change the default printer.
Then I noticed, when I used the Print command for a document, that the printer list in the Print dialogue box showed that it had a tick against the "HP Photosmart series 6520" printer. When I changed this to the ("Photosmart 6520 series (FDA82D)" printer, the machine printed my document. But the next time I opened the print command, the tick was once again next to the "HP Photosmart series 6520" printer.
The printers listed in the Print dialogue box have small icons to their left. The "HP Photosmart series 6520" has a wavy line inside a circle and the "Photosmart 6520 series (FDA82D)" has an exclamation mark inside a triangle.
The second problem is that the printer is no longer rotating the second page when I am printing two-sided and choose "short edge binding" in layout. It now prints out exactly the same as when "long edge binding" is selected (default). The result is that the second page is printed upside down in relation to the first page. This problem has never previously occurred.
So far I have tried paracetamol and scotch but neither seems to solve these problems. Not sure if I should try them together!
Sorry this is so long-winded - I'm trying to include as much detail as possible to make it all clear from the start.

    Hello lenc48,
    Welcome to the HP Forums.
I see that you are having a few issues when it comes to printing from your mac as well as some two sided printing issues.
I do have a some suggestions that we can try in the attempt to troubleshoot this issue.
First off, please make sure that you have the printer power cable connected directly to a wall outlet and not a power bar/strip. Here is a document that uses a LaserJet printer as an example but it is meant for HP products in general. Please click on the following link that explains the Issues when Connected to an Uninterruptible Power Supply/Power Strip/Surge Protector.
Please remove the usb cable (if using wireless, disregard this step) from the printer and from the Mac and leave it disconnected until further notice.
Please click on the first link that will give you instructions on Uninstalling the Printer Software.
Once the software has been removed, please disable any anti virus protection that you may have on the Mac.
The next step we are going to take is downloading the HP Photosmart 6520 e-All-in-One Printer Full Feature Software and Drivers - OS X 10.9 Mavericks.
The installation will prompt you when to connect the usb cable (You will see a prompt for a wireless connection as well if that is the connection type you would like to use) so please do not connect the cable until prompted to do so.
If you are still having issues, feel free to write me back or you can contact HP Total care direct.  If you are calling within North America, the number is 1-800-474-6836 and for all other regions, click here: click here.
    Thanks for your time.

  • [HP Photosmart D110a] Printer won't connect to network

    Printer: HP Photosmart D110a
    Operating system: Mac OSX 10.6.8
I'm living in a dorm room and trying to wirelessly connect my printer to my computer. I can't connect my printer to my university's network because it's protected. Instead I've been connecting to my printer's SSID network. I go into Settings --> Wireless --> Wireless Settings --> Wireless Setup Wizard --> the printer scans for routers, and then the SSID name comes up in a list underneath my university's closed network. It's called HPD110a.7809C6.
I connect to it, it says it's connected, but then the Wireless light keeps flashing blue. I go back to the Wireless tab and it shows that it's connecting, connecting, connecting... and then there's no connection.
My printer was working a little while ago. It's been tempermental and has occasionally worked. But since the last time my roommate used it and turned it off, it's refused to connect to that SSID network and has thus refused to work. I think I solved the connectivity issue I had before by connecting it to the SSID network, but now it won't connect.
Things I've tried to combat this issue:
Restarted the printer, both by turning it off and turning it on manually, as well as pulling the plug out of the back while it was on (I've read in my search for an answer for this problem that doing that can help some issues?) and unplugging it while it was off and then restarting it
Continuously tried to reconnect to the SSID network
Tried to enter the printer's IP in my internet browser's address bar; nothing came up, since it isn't connected
Turned off the wireless in the Wireless Settings menu, then turned it back on a half hour later, then waited to see if it'd reconnect
    Reset printer drivers
Updated my ePrint software and installed all availible HP product updates
I've printed out the Network Test multiple times, and each time it's said everything passes, but that I've had numerous disconnects and that the connection is low
I even moved a music player that was near my printer, thinking that maybe the metal was messing up the connection somehow (last resort)
Changed the empty ink cartridge (last resort)
I haven't tried restarting my computer, but I don't think that's what the problem is. My roommate's computer can't connect to the printer either (she's running OSX 10.8).
I have the printer in my Printer list twice in two seperate ways: One version is connected through the IP address, and the other is an option that appeared once while I was connected to the SSID network and just became a new printer. That one includes the scan option, but the first one doesn't. When I try to print something, the first printer says "Network host [IP ADDRESS] is busy.. will retry in 5/10/20/etc seconds..." and the second printer says "Printer offline."
The same thing happens with both whether I've gone into my Airport settings in the upper right and connected to the printer as a Device or not. It still shows my printer as a Device that I connect to, even though the printer itself says it's offline.
    Additional informatiom:
I don't have a USB cable for my printer, so I haven't tried that yet.
At one point during all the re-setting and restarting, I saw the printer's IP address appear in the Wireless menu as the connected network, but it still wouldn't print at that time.
That's all the information I can think of in relation to this issue; if anyone needs to know anything else, let me know. Hopefully it's enough, and hopefully someone will have the answer to my problem.
Sorry if anything is confusing or frantic; I've been dealing with this for a few days now, and I've searched all the help forums I could and looked through as many HP documents as possible, but nothing has changed the situation. This is basically my last hope.

After just switching from Cable to FIOS, I had to get my HP C4580 wireless printer back online too.
What was important was that the Printer settings knew about the IP and port changes that are impacted from the new network and router from Verizon.   How to do this is in your HP printer network setup manual and handled by their driver when its installed on the PC.
If all fails, try hooking up to your printer via an USB cable and start from there.  Make sure everything works wired before trying again from a wireless setup.  Youll end up with two printers in your Windows Printer choices, one for USB and one for Wireless, but thats no big deal.

    Hi Karnikel,

  • Printer offline issues

    Hi all,
3.4 GHz iMac running 10.6.8.  Software update current.
Epson NX430 (new) connected via wifi.  All installation, including downloading the current drivers from Epson, went smoothly.  Printing and scanning wirelessly does indeed work.  But...
After a while, the printer, or the Mac printing system, sends the printer "offline."  When I send a document to the printer, I get a warning icon from the print monitor, and the NX430 print monitor window says "Looking for printer.... printer offline."
The quick fix for this is to power cycle the printer (obviously a pain).  Interestingly, this was the same issue I had with the HP Photosmart 4400 device that the Epson replaced. That HP printer was hooked up via USB, but didn't scan except to PCs, so the switch was to fix that and hopefully also fix the printer offline issue at the same time. But this experience leads me to think that the problem is with the OS, and not the printer.
Other things I have tried:  Restarting the iMac.  Deleting and re-adding printer.  Resetting the printing system (this worked for a few days, I think, although it is hard to be sure of cause and effect). Checking the network connections -- printer and gateway IP addresses are correct, and even when getting the printer offline message, I can successfully ping the printer.
One more thing.  When the system is in this "printer offline" state, trying to activate either the printer utility, or check supply levels, results in an error message, even though I have verified network connectivity with a ping test.
    Any ideas?
    Thanks,
    Dave

With the ping getting a response from the printer it would suggest that the symptom is not network related but more to do with the supporting software, or more so with the protocols it uses to communicate with the printer. I would guess that the printer supports Bonjour and you would have added the printer by opening the Default Add Printer view and selecting the printer that was shown in this view. If this was the case then a suggestion would be to look at using an alternate protocol for the print queue, providing the printer does support such an option. If you can check the network settings for the printer there may be the option to use/enable print protocols such as LPR. With this active, the printer can be added using IP > LPD. This requires you to enter the IP address of the printer and then browse for the printer driver.
If such an option to use an alternate print protocol does not exist then something else you can test when the printer goes offline is the scanning. Does this also fail?
And can you confirm? You said you had to power cycle the HP to get it working again. Do you have to do the same with the Epson to get it printing again?

  • ESTN c510 "Printer offline" error

My e510 will work properly for awhile but eventually one of the two computers connected by hardwire to the network will have their documents sit in the Spooler/"All active printers" file & eventually will give a "Printer offline" error message The printer is connected wirelessly. Going thru ALL the "Guided solutions" does nothing. Printer is listed as the "Default" & has a green checkmark next to it, but says it's offline Zeen shows proper network connection as does a Microsoft network diagnostic. I have also re-booted my Verizon router & the computers. The only way to restore to working order is to delete the printer and re-install the software. Any queued documents start printing before the intall is even complete. Interesting, I had the same un-resolved problem with my Photosmart 3310 & that was connected by cat 5. Computers, routers & switches are in perfect running order with no malware. Any help would be appreciated

If you keep losing your network connection with your eStation, you may want to set a static IP for the printer (not the Zeen).  Click this link for information on how to do that on your printer (similar model of printer in link).  Also, I have included a document so that you can make sure you have done all of the basic troubleshooting to keep this from happening again.
--Printer Does Not Maintain a Wireless Connection--
You shouldn't have to uninstall every time this happens.  I will need to know the operating system of your computer to assist you with a way around that step however.  Please specify the OS of the computer you use the most so I can help you if the above document does not.

  • Can't connect Airport Express & a HP Photosmart c4200 Printer

I think these discussion boards are great. I was hoping someone could possibly shed some light on a small issue I'm having connecting an Airport Express & a HP Photosmart c4200 Printer.
I have the Printer hooked up to the Airport Express, but when I go to print, I get a message telling me my printer is offline. My Airport express recognizes the printer and I have the printer on. I'm not quite sure what the problem is.
I'm relatively new to this so any help that someone could provide would be greatly appreciated.
    Thanks!

Is printer is detected in airport utility?
Is green light ON on your airport extreme? or orange light flashing?
Some printers are not compatible with airport extreme.
I had the same problem with my brother printer, all I did was turned my firewall off & restared the computer and airport extreme..wallah it worked than I turned my firewall back on.

  • Mac 'printer offline' message

Hi - I have an imac running os10.9 just upgraded with an HP photosmart 5524
Before the upgrade I tried to print and got the message 'printer offline' - this is the third of fourth time now I have had this, each time I have then had to de-install and re-install the software.
I upgraded to 10.9 and tried to install the relevant driver - only to get an error message when I tried to expand the driver download - I have checked permissions and they are all fine, and re-run the download three times only to get the same error each time.
I have reverted to your 12.23.0 driver - twice downloaded and installed and am still getting the 'printer offline'
I have reset the printer and added it in preferences - same problem.
This is truly hopeless - please help before I through this printer out

  • My Photosmart 7520 is offline in HP Connected

    Oi!
My Photosmart 7520 is connected to internet, on the printer screen I am connected.
I can print direct from a computer but when I log into HP Connected site it shows that I am offline and I there are no directions on how to change to on line. It was working before but now it is offline.
Has any one has or had tthis problem and got it solved?

    Hello @Twnv7520
Thanks for posting on the HP Forums.
I should be able to help with your printer offline on the HP Connected website.
The first thing I would recommend trying is a power cycle of the devices.  Remove the power from the router and printer.  Wait 1 minute and plug the router in. Wait another minute and plug the printer in.  They should turn themselves on when plugged in.  After devices boot up refresh your HP Connected page and see if the printer shows online.  There may be a small communication hiccup with the printer communicating through the router to the web.
You mentioned the printer was connected Wifi. That only means the printer is on your network.  It does not mean it is connected to the internet.  For the printer to be connected to the internet the Web Services feature must be enabled.  to ensure Web Services is enabled, press the icon at the top left corner of the printer screen that looks like a paper with a target behind it.
If the printer displays the printers email address then web services is still enabled.  If not it was ask you to accept terms of service and enable web services. If you have to re-enable web services a page will print out and you will ahve to add the printer to HP Connected again using the new claimcode.
Let me know how it goes and thanks again for posting on the HP Forums.

  • Is there any way to print a photo from my iphone on plain paper on my photosmart plus printer?

Whenever I try to use Airprint to print a photo from my iPhone to my Photosmart Plus printer, it tries to print it on photo paper from the photo paper tray.
I want it to print on the plain paper in the regular tray.
I read online where this is possible with the iPrint app - but when I went to the App Store, there is no iPrint App.  I found a sticky post here saying that it has been removed from the App Store in anticipation of a new ePrint Home & Business version that won't be available everywhere until September.
So, in the meantime, is there anyway to change the location of where the photos from the iPhone print?
Thanks in advance for any assistance.

    HI
Most likely their is not, as printing pictures is standard set to photopaper as you most likely need good quality. Pictures on normal paper are not considered good quaity and thus not set as standard.

I was able to find out why the C4750 will not listed in the All-in-One Remote app, but is in the ePrint app. The printer just isn't supported in the app.
You will have to keep using the ePrint app for any printing done with the iPad and C4750.
Wish I better news, or a workaround for you.
    Regards,
    JERENDS
