HP Photosmart Pro B8850: I have artifact lines on my color prints

I am printing Christmas cards putting 5x7 prints on a 10 x 7 card.  When I print on a glossy card (the print only covers half the card), there are white artifact lines on the prints.  This only happens with glossy paper (not with mat paper).  I am printing from Adobe Photshop Elements 3.  I tried to print on the top of the card so the white (unprinted) half of the card would come out of the printer first, but I could not make the printer do that (thought that might eliminate the lines).  Can anyone help me?

Update:
I have managed to define this problem more clearly.  This is very reproducible, not random.  My system:  HP B8850 printer on Windows XP-Pro, USB.  There is a drastic color failure under certain settings.  I first noticed this when printing a photo of a brilliant pink flower - the flower prints as white, slightly yellow, with no pink at all.  I can produce this result consistently under these conditions:  1) 4x6 or 5x7 paper sizes (I have not tried all possible sizes.)  2) under Photoshop CS3, setting color to be managed by CS3.  3) In the printer preferences dialog, choosing paper type HP Advanced Photo Glossy, or HP Pro Satin (I have not tried all the paper types.)
Printing 8.5x11 or larger: No Problem.  Let the printer manage color: No Problem.  Choose Fiber Gloss, or Other Photo Paper: No Problem.
My workaround for now is to have CS3 manage the color, selecting the ICC profile of the paper I'm using, but in the printer preferences dialog, choose Other Photo Paper.  This produces slightly inferior color rendition, but I am not as demanding in 4x6 prints as I am in large prints for wall display.  Nevertheless, I would like see this issue fixed in a driver update ASAP.

  • Ink cartridges life span in Photosmart Pro B8850

I have an HP Photosmart Pro B8850 Printer that we bought so I could print high quality pictures and also on 12x12 cardstock for scrapbooking.  We don't use our printer very often (maybe once a month), however the ink cartridges seem to run out really fast (especially since we aren't using it).  I was just wondering if anyone else is having this same problem, if there is a setting I need to fix, or if something is wrong with our printer.  Any insight will be greatly appreciated!  Thank you!

I have the same problem. It's costing a fortune to run this printer. I consider this as robbery. A complete set of cartridges cost over 300$, and that's ridiculous expensive. I will never again buy any HP product. The information on how many pages you can print is false. So if you are thinking of buying an inkjet color printer stay away from this one.
It's also a very noisy printer shaking like hell while printing. I was never able to make the manual feed work properly either.
Total waste of time and money.

  • OfficeJet Pro 8600 scans have vertical lines.

I have a OfficeJet Pro 8600 and my scans have vertical lines.  Copying does not have the lines.

I used the ADF and the flat bed to scan; both having lines as a result.
In one of the forums and they thought it was static.  It was suggested to have the printer on and then unplug it.  Wait 15 seconds and plug it back in.  That did the trick.  No more lines.  I guess with winter bringing on more dry air, static is prevalent.
    Problem solved.

  • I recently upgraded to 0S 10.6.8 on mab pro and now have pink lines around the desktop borders. A horrible red colour appears in the background of the screen saver, and in parts of Safari and other applications including MS Office. please help

I recently upgraded my Macbook Pro to SL OS 10.6.8 and now have pink lines around the desktop borders and some menus. There is also a horrible red colour that appears in the background of photobooth and parts of Safari. The screen saver looks like an alien life form with red in the background. There are odd translucent colours in the background of other applications including MS Office. It looks like a horrible psychedilic trip from the 60's. I ran the upgrade again but nothing changed. Can you help?

Backup your files off the computer (not TimeMachine) and disconnect.
Hold c boot off the 10.6 disk, under the Utilities menu > Disk Utiltiy > Repair Disk, and Repair Permissions
(quit and stop if Disk Repair (only) issues a failure and notify us)
Quit and install 10.6 again, reboot and Software Update again,  this time download it and then run it. Check Software Update until clear.
c boot off the 10.6 disk and use Disk Utility >Repair Disk again (fixes a bug)
Reboot and check any installed programs, some may not function who have installed kext files into OS X, those need to be reinstalled.
You didn't mention if you upgraded from 10.5 or 10.6.7, the above steps are for fixing a 10.6 to 10.6.8
If you upgraded from 10.5, you should erase the drive in Disk Utility first, then install 10.6 fresh, but then all your programs will have to be reinstalled or updated from original sources.
Also the 10.6.3 upgrade disk has no free iLife, but you can install 10.5 fresh then upgrade to 10.6.3, then to 10.6.8 and then all new programs and that will give free iLife that came on the factory 10.5 disks.
You also can use Pacifist to extract iLife from 10.5 disks.

  • HP Photosmart Pro B8850 Issue

Does anyone else get random yellow and black prints when they're supposed to be in color? When I make prints through Photoshop CS3 for 4x6 photos, the printer will not spit out color prints, but it will work normally for any other size. Tried EVERYTHING and tech support does not know what to do.

  • Macbook Pro's display have weird lines

    Hey everyone,

  • HP Photosmart Pro B8850 can't print in color

I am using this printer for the first time.  I went through the onboard alignment, calibration and cleaning procedures, yet I cannot get any colors to print.  Does anyone know what I'm doing wrong?  I'm printing from a computer running windows XP.  There is ink in the cartridges  The computer has sat in the box for over a year.
    Thanks

    Hello Bobmcclammy,
I can understand the frustration when the printer, in your case the Officejet Pro 8000, stops and tells you to change inks you are not even using. I too have fought with this in the past. Unfortunately, there is no "work around" for such an issue, at least that I have been able to find.
Even when printing black text only, for example, a resume, the printer will be using a subtle amount of color as a base. Printhead maintenance also will chip away at the ink, this is to ensure the ink is not drying up within the print system. This information will explain more: Ink Usage in Inkjet Printers.
What I have done in order to get the most out of the printer ink is, set the printer in a black only grey scale mode. This needs to be set in the printing preferences in the print driver installed on the computer.
The inks will still need to be replaced, but it should help for the future.

  • Can't install Photosmart Pro B8850 software/drivers on Win 8.1 Envy desktop

    ‎07-01-2014 10:25 AM
The software/drivers package downloaded from HP hangs during instalation, Print & scan doctor finds the printer downloads the software but the instalation never starts.

    Hi,
Follow the steps below and check if that resolve the issue:
    1. Open Mcafee software, from the Virus and Spyware Protection section click on Schedule and run scans. Click on Real time scanning and then on Turn Off. select Never and confirm by clicking the Turn Off button.
    2. Open the run dialog by clicking both the Windows key and the R key on your keyboard. Type %windir% and click on OK.
    3. Type hpoins*.dat into the top search bar, if there are any results rename the extention into old instead of dat. (e.g. hpoins1.old)
    4. Type hpwins*.dat into the top search bar, if there are any results rename the extention into old instead of dat. (e.g. hpwins1.old)
    5. Launch the Run dialog by clicking both the Windows key and the R key on your keyboard. Type MSIEXEC /UNREGISTER into the Run dialog and click on OK.
    6. Launch the Run dialog by clicking both the Windows key and the R key on your keyboard. Type MSIEXEC /REGSERVER into the Run dialog and click on OK.
    7. Reboot your PC
    8. Run the installation file and check for any difference.
    9. Once you are done, be sure to open McAfee and reactivate Real Time Scanning.

  • I have dark lines going across photo

I just got a new Photosmart Plus B209 and it has lines on my 4x6 prints.  I printed 6 prints and one of the earlier ones was fine.  I was just using normal and not best setting because I have never used best before for printing photos.  The lines run about every half inch all the way across.  Do I have a faulty printer or is there something that I can do?

  • Photosmart Pro B8800 Color Management Problems

I recently purchased the Photosmart Pro 8800 and am very dissapointed with the photo print quality.  When I allow the printer to manage the colors, the blacks have a green cast and the overall print is greyish.  I see this with Adobe Photoshop or Picasa.
When I print from Photoshop and allow Photoshop to manage colors, pick the correct color space, ICC profile, perceptual, etc..., it's even worre.  The pictures are mostly grey with a little yellow in them.
I can't believe it is that bad.  I must be doing something wrong.  Can anyone help?

  • I have faint but noticeable horizontal lines on prints from my Photosmart Pro B9180.

When printing grey scale pictures on my Photosmart Pro B9180, I can see faint horizontal lines not quite 1/4 apart.  I have aligned the heads and cleaned them 3 times and the lines remain.  The Head analysis indicates that three of my heads are in fair condition and one is in good condition.  I also notice when the print out after head cleaning is on glossy paper that multiple lines appear in virtually all the color swatches.  I have not received a "replace printhead" message, but I'm beginning to thing that is the next step.  Any insights?

Can I purchase Mountain Lion and make a flash drive bootable? I do not want to install it on my Macbook Pro. I have Snow Leopard on my Macbook Pro now, and due to my hard drive needing repair, I need to boot off of another source, like my flash drive. I am in Paris and my Snow Leopard DVD is in Texas.

Mac OS X has a built-in disk diagnostic and repair program called fsck or file system consistency check. Here’s how to verify and repair your startup disk with fsck.  As soon as you hear the startup tone, press and hold Command-S on the keyboard. Keep holding down those keys until you see a black screen with white lettering. This is called “booting into Single User Mode.”  As the Mac boots in this mode, the screen reports each step of the process. The line should end in root#.  Right after the root# prompt, enter the following: /sbin/fsck -fy
If repairing the disk in single user mode fails, it means one of two things. Either your hard drive itself is failing (a hardware failure), or the directory damage on your hard drive is beyond the capability of the built-in repair procedures in OS X.

  • HP B9180 Photosmart Pro Printer - Specialty Media Tray Not Working

    HP B9180 PHOTOSMART PRO PRINTER
    SPECIALTY MEDIA TRAY PROBLEM
I’ve had my HP B9180 Photosmart Pro Printer for about 2-1/2 years. My computer operating system is Windows XP (with up-to-date service packs) on a Dell XPS PC. The printer is connected directly to the computer via a USB port. It is not connected to a network router. The printer stays on continuously, is very clean & dust free and kept covered when not in use. I use the specialty media tray almost exclusively for loading the larger/heavier media. The specialty media tray suddenly stopped working recently but all other printer operations continue to function properly.
When the tray is lowered, NOTHING HAPPENS. The printhead assembly does not raise up to prepare for loading the media and there is no sound, no grinding, etc. The printer screen does not change to instruct me to load the media and there are no error messages. It just continues to read “READY”.
I have examined the tray and it still lowers and raises nice & smooth. The guide grooves the tray rides on are clean & unobstructed. Nothing appears to be broken on the tray or in the grooves. There is a small plastic arm at the bottom of the outer left guide groove that I thought may start (?) the activation process of the printheads when the lowered tray rests on it. This arm is spring-loaded and appears to be working freely with no binding. Manual operation (with my finger) of the arm does not activate anything.
Early on, when the problem first started, I tried leaving the tray lowered and on two occasions, after leaving it lowered for as much as a couple of hours, it started working on its own. Since then, I have been unable to make it work at all.
    I have tried:
Turning the printer off for several minutes, then back on.
Opening all doors to check for jams or anything unusual.
Lowering and raising the specialty media tray multiple times.
Using main tray (hoping it would maybe vibrate it into working).
Turning the printer off, unplugging everything for up to 10 minutes.
Downloaded & ran the HP Hardware Diagnostic Utility (Passed).
Downloaded & ran the HP Print Diagnostic Utility, v4.1 (Passed).
Checked printer updates. Firmware & updates are OK.
Posted on the HP Support Forum for assistance (no response).
I did not run the HP Home Network Diagnostic Utility because I do not have the printer connected to my network router. It is directly connected to my computer via a USB port.
This problem has come up on the HP Support Forum a few times but I don’t believe there has been a response. Any assistance will be greatly appreciated.

    Hi,
I just installed or used the same specification of Printer you mentioned above in fact all you need do is to first update your macbook pro afterwards connect your printer to your mac it will ask you if you want to download software for the printer click yes and in two minutes follow the steps and you're done. You don't need the driver nor do you need to download from an external source.
    I hope this helps.

  • Printing Success with Aperture 1.5.2 and HP Photosmart Pro B9180

With so many "hit-and-miss" posts regarding printing, I thought I'd post my result with Aperture 1.5.2 and my newly-acquired HP Photosmart Pro B9180.
Firstly, I have my monitor calibrated using ColorVision's Spyder Express. It's a cost-effective solution to monitor calibration and what I see on the screen is what I'm seeing in the print. I calibrate weekly.
Secondly, I'm using HP's Advanced Photo Glossy Paper for prints. HP provides the ICC profiles for their papers (and thus far, they seem to be dead-on accurate).
Thirdly, and I believe this is where issues can occur, is to set, via the Print Driver, color management as Application Managed. This bypasses the default of allowing the printer to manage color for you. This allows Aperture to use the ICC profile of the printer and calculate the proper color "conversion".
Finally, via the Apple's support article on optiziming print (http://docs.info.apple.com/article.html?artnum=302821) save the customized printer setup for a specified print size, paper, etc.
I have made 20 prints thus far and all have come out satisfactory. The only "tip" I'd make is that I noticed the gamma setting in the print dialogue is ideally set at 1.15. Otherwise, the print seems to be a bit dark.
    PowerMac G5 Dual 2GHz   Mac OS X (10.4.9)   4 Gigs RAM, CalDigit S2VR Duo 1TB

I just got a B9180 too so thought I would try printing from Aperture. As you suggested I set Gamma to 1.15 - but I still feel the prints are a bit dark. Tried 1.20 but that looked identical to 1.15!
