HP PPDs, OS X10.5 and Quark &.3

My HP ColorLaserJet 2550 Series doesn't show in Device Options pop-up menu of Quark 7.3 print dialog. I can only print using "Generic Color" so I'm unable to access paper size options of the printer. The Library>>Printer>>PPD on my hard-drive doesn't have the PPD. Downloaded/installed what HP site says is the correct driver, no luck. In fact, a custom install of the .dmg download says that the PPD files can't be installed on the machine (probably because they were made for Classic OS when I first bought the machine which now runs Leopard). I thought the HP download would have been an upgrade of the PPD that would run on OS 10.5. Does MAC have a set of PPDs somewhere where I can get ones that didn't come with the install? Or, am I just out of luck and have to but a new printer? Help?

Welcome to Apple Discussions,
Yes, the PPD for your printer is on the Leopard DVD. You can extract it from the installation disk using Pacifist.
Launch Pacifist. Insert your Leopard DVD. When it appears on the desktop, drag and drop the icon of the DVD onto the Pacifist window, or click the "Open Apple Install Discs" button. Once Pacifist is done reading in the packages on the disk, enter 2550 in the Find bar at the top. A sheet will pop out on the right. Highlight the file "HP Color LaserJet 2550.gz". Pacifist will jump to that file in the left pane. You may need to scroll a bit to find it. Click on it there and click the Install button at the upper left. Do the same with the file "HP Color LaserJet 2550.icns" that you'll also see in the sheet at the right.

  • Crashing in PS CS and Quark when opening files over network

Mac Pro and MacBook Pro 10.4.8 using Adobe Photoshop CS2 and Quark 6.52 will crash or become VERY unstable when opening files from server or remote machine. Server is 10.3.9 or remote Mac running 10.4.7, all works fine IF file are copied to client machine, but cannot use -File/Open dialog. This is a network isue in relation to Intel translation, is there a fix (Rosetta?)

Try looking for some "special" characters in file or folder names ( e.g. / or ?).
I had similar problems with PPC-Apps (InDesign CS2 and 4D Client 2003) since 10.4.7 and 10.4.8. App crashes or shows strange grey boxes on the screen when I tried to open files over the network, no probs with same files locally.

  • Leopard, Photoshop and Quark

Since loading Leopard I have problems with Photoshop not creating an EPS of a path to make only the object appear with the background (transparent) as I have dione hundreds of times with the older software. When importing the EPS into Quark it shows the white background. This concrns Leopard,Photoshop 10 and Quark 7.3 -- When I go to another machine with older software I can make the EPS and then take it to the new software. Funnily enough then the transparency is as expected. So who is at fault? Leopard?

    Hi, Jeff --
Well, I think my problem is finally solved, thanks (partly) to your help. Just to help other folks who have this problem, I'm going to state briefly how I fixed it:
-- I did an Erase and Install on the Seagate AFTER spending all day burning 30 CDs with the archived files I'd taken off the Mac but didn't want to lose.
-- After that, I could indeed boot up the Mac from the Seagate in 10.3 and all seemed fine.
-- But I made the mistake of doing a full backup to the Seagate from the Mac (which took two hours).
-- After that, I couldn't boot up the Seagate at all -- I spent two 20-minute periods waiting for it to get off the gray screen with the Apple log, to no avail. A friend of mine suggested that the backup program might be the problem.
-- After some trepidation but knowing that I already had everything I needed on those 30 CDs, I decided to experiment and partition the Seagate (via Disc Utility) into one partition with only the 10.3 install on it and the other with whatever files I needed, including the applications I needed to open in 10.3.
-- That worked!! I can now boot up the Seagate "10.3 drive" and access all the files and applications I need from the Seagate "Backup Drive."
I hope this information helps someone else in the same predicament.
Thanks for all your help and patience; your suggestion to do an Erase and Install was the right move to get me started.

  • 12 Core Mac Pro and Quark 8.16.2 Processor Crash

I have installed 2 12 Core Mac pros with Quark 8.16 and am having the same problem on both. After running Quark for 20 or 30 minutes, the processors all run at 100% and Quark eventually becomes unresponsive. A force quit is required.
Quark has no reports of this problem, anyone else using Quark on a 12 core?

No change here either... I have been onto Quark and I have deleted the Preferences folder more times than I need to remember... and even deleted in the home/library/preferences/quark and setup a new "Preferences" (Cap P) in the Application/Quark 8.0 folder and still no improvement. It worked perfect at first... then I went back ands setup my settings.... increased cache levels and various settings... so I'm thinking it could be one of those effecting the situation... I haven't had the time or patience to try since the last time... but the Quark defaults work fine for quitting... well they did the time I did it and testing.... just need to test more... or maybe wait for 10.6.5... it might sort it also...
    Talk soon...

  • Problem with open Word Documents and Quark Documents

    Hi,
    I am getting a strange problem with OS X Server 10.4.6, running on a G4 Xserve 1Ghz.
When working on files in Microsoft Word X and 2004 after having the file open for a few minutes if you try and save we get an error "Word failed reading from this file", or "Bad network connection".
Also in Quark 6.52 and Quark 6.1 when trying to save a file to the server we get "File not found [-43]". It is possible to open files, and it is also possible to move files onto the share using finder without any problems. To work on documents we are having to work on them locally on the desktop then copy across once done.
The only thing that i can think has changed is the power went off last night, which casued the Xserve to restart. These problems are occuring across all client computers so i am assuming it can only be a problem with the server.
Does anyone have any idea what this could be, or any tests that i can do to detmine what is up with it
    Many Thanks
    Tim Pearson

    Hi David,
I have just tried power-cycling the switches, still getting the same problem.
I will run disk utility on the shares at lunch. I don't think this will help as it is happening on both data drives.
I have now also updated the OS X server to 10.4.7, and have turned the access log and error log on, it is showing no errors in the error log, and i can't see anything in the access log that looks out of the ordinary.
With Quark i can replicate the same problem every time by creating a new project, saving it, altering it and saving it again (this works), then if i alter it again and try and save it comes up with "Duplicate File Name [-48]". It is also not deleting the temporary files, for example "QXP-1055966280.qxp".

  • Printing double-sided problem, Leopard, Laserjet P2055dn and Quark XPress

I've also asked about this in Quark's forum.
Printing a Quark file double-sided to the Laserjet using Leopard - first third of the sheet (A4 landscape) is blank on both sides).
This does not happen on Tiger, same file, printer and version of Quark.
Printing from any other (text) app (Acrobat pdf, Word, TextEdit, InDesign) whether on Tiger or Leopard is correct.
    Any suggestions, please?

Possible solution for p2055dn and other printers using Leopard

Tried this open source driver idea and eventually got the P2055dn working properly with Leopard.
NB - Follow the instructions and then use the open-source driver instead of the HP one.

  • QT 7.4, Flash and Quark

Taking a long shot at posting here but I am completely stumped.
Today I upgrade to QT 7.4. When I have Quark 6.5 or 7.0 open my flash player in Safari and Firefox slows to a crawl. As soon as I quit the Quark apps the flash player returns to normal.
What the **** could be causing this. Note that the only change to my system has been the upgrade of QT to 7.4.
I am running 10.5.1 on a POWER MAC G5 QUAD
any crazy thoughts? what are the properties that tie these three programs together?

I have disabled all Quark extensions and this does not solve the problem.
I will watch the Flash app hang in safari and exactly when i quit Quark the flash player will spring into action.

Quark 6.5 refuses to start after the update. It bounces once and it dies.
I've repaired the preferences, cleaned the system, the kernel and user caches, but no go.
    Anyone with a workaround?

Thanks Kurt. I removed those as well. Removed all extensions too.... Started in safe mode.... nothing worked.
Finally, I just deleted all Quark traces and then did a clean install of Quark, with all the upgrades. Now it works:-) Weird.

  • Leopard and quark 7.3

Why dont the software companies check their products work before they con us out of our hard earned cash, we upgraded with a love quark and leopard bundle and wish we hadn't... its a nightmare with Quark not working in Leopard and Apple with a 15 min wait on their support line... as a MAC fan since 1986 I am questioning my sanity in upgrading to the wonder product leopard... this software is not fit for purpose, Quark 7.3 worked well in Tiger, Leopard is ruining my business as I cant work!

  • Logic scores and Quark compatability?

Hi. I use Logic to mainly produce audio and up till now, I have always used Sibelius to produces the scores that my co-writer then imports to Quark, for publication. However can anyone advise whether the score production facility of Logic Pro is a) up to the quality of Sibelius and b) can scores be easily imported into Quark? I would ideally to be using one program ie Logic for both audio and score production. Thanks, Mark.

    hi mark,
you 'can' create pretty professional scores in logic and it is possible to create EPS and PDF documents that you can view and manipulate in quark. logics score facility is very old and in desperate need of updating. we have had it on good authority that there will be some kind updating of logics score feature in the next big update whenever that will be.
i myself have produced plenty of concert music scores with logic and there are plenty of caveats and problems. in many areas logic is much faster to work with, and in others it is slower. on balance it is probably a bit faster, but the bits that slow you up are annoying.
    you can read this:
    http://www.stevenson.homechoice.co.uk/documents/LogicProScoreRequests.pdf
which will give you an overview of what it can and can't do and how to get around them and this:
    http://www.stevenson.homechoice.co.uk/pdfscores/clayexcerpts.pdf
which shows you what can be achieved with some messing around and this:
    http://www.stevenson.homechoice.co.uk/pdfscores/devil.pdf
which shows that you can produce a pretty smart looking full score. that said, sibelius being a dedicated notating program will be a touch better. its just that for ease of editing and composition and fantastic sounding mock-ups you can't beat logic. in fact, the mock up for 'devil' which you can hear on my concert music page, was produced directly from the score i printed. i worked out a way to make what was seen on screen sound exactly as it should - aprt from a few cheats.

  • Fonts, leopard and quark?

Not really a question but an observation.
Two new imacs, identical configuration. Both purchased together. Some different software installed on each is the only difference.
Mac 1. 10.5.2 quark 7.1 fonts work fine and all appear. eg avenir font
Mac 2. 10.5. , quark 7.3 fonts don't work fine, avenir won't be seen by quark when installed. Same font used.
Haven't tried at home yet to see if I can see them there. How about what everyone else has

    Hi emad&c,
Silly me! I forgot I had an evaluation disk for Quark 7. So I installed it on both a G5 running 10.4.11 and an Intel Core Duo 2 iMac running Leopard 10.5.2. Updated both Quark installations to 7.31.
I was unable to duplicate your problem. Any font I opened worked as expected on both Macs, even Avenir, which I have as a Type 1 PostScript font.
What I did find is that Quark moved the jaws folder. It's no longer in with the application. For version 7.x, go to the Preferences folder in your user account. Open the Quark folder within and delete the jaws folder. Relaunch Quark.
