    So, what's there to say.
Ran Windows 7 for about a year on this laptop for college, until I wanted to get back into using Arch again.. so now this laptop is continuously overheating when running Arch.
    It's a HP ProBook 4510s with Intel 5100 wifi, 320GB harddrive, 2.2GHz T6670 processor Core2Duo, 3GB DDR2, ATi Radeon Mobility 4330.
What bugs me is that it overheats because for some reason during the initialization of the kernel all my fans get turned off..
the modules I have loaded on runtime are these modules: http://home.deds.nl/~xanderbos/linux/install_mods.txt
I just wish I knew what I could do to alleviate these issues and get it to run normally, as suggested on the IRC channel I have installed the cpufreq-utils and use an ondemand cpu governer on my setup. I'm just really stuck on fixing it and I don't know what else to do.
    Greetings,
    Xander (Zandaa)

    1. acpi-cpufreq does not show in your modules list.
You should add it to the modules line in /etc/rc.conf
    MODULES=(acpi-cpufreq)
    2. Also in /etc/conf.d/cpufreq you should have this
    some configuration here
You need to set the min_freq and max_freq for your processor.  Get that information from
    cpufreq-info
    3. Add cpufreq in your /etc/rc.conf
DAEMONS=(syslog-ng dbus hal cpufreq !network netfs crond wicd kdm)
    Reboot
That should resolve any cpu heat caused by running max speed all the time.

Hey Neal, thanks for the reply, I already actually have all that setup and done, except my processor keeps overheating because the fans just refuse to turn on when needed..
The nasty thing is, it overheats when I'm running nothing at all and am not even running the X-Server yet..

  • HP Probook 4510s gpu upgrade

    Hello,
I am in posession of a HP Probook 4510s and i was wondering if i can get a gpu upgrade. His original CPU is also going to be upgraded from a t5870 to a t9600.
But i can not find anywhere the GPU compatility list for my laptop. Is it possible to find a better GPU than the current 4330?
Or i am stuck with this one.. some laptop users i have heard that they upgraded their gpus easly and they found out all upgrades that are supported by their laptops from customer service or something like that.
i wonderd if someone could point me in the right direction or to show me a GPU compatibility list from my Probook 4510s

Thank you very much for the info. I was afraid that they would be mounted together.  I will check the prices and see what i can do.. because the laptop has some sentimental value) i can not just throw it out.. i will see if i can do something for it.
Anyway thanks again for the info.

G5 PowerBook; Intel cpu; recently upgraded 10.3.9 to 10.5.8 also upgraded to iLife6. After several downloads suggested from Apple, iMovie6 is a mess. Clip indicator runs 3 clips ahead of the sound and video. Jerky. Unusable. All the movies were created with iMovie 4 and loaded all into this version and saved all in this version.
Video card is GeForce FX 5200; Quartz Extreme: Supported: Core Image: Hardware Excelerated.
Perhaps in the multiple downloads, Apple sent me a version that outruns my aged video card?

  • How to upgrade Intel graphic/CPU on Satellite Pro M70

Ok, here we go with my first posting. I have bought a Satellite Pro M70, about a year ago. It has a graphics chip (intel gtl 950?!), i just would like to know, if it is possible to install a graphics card, like ati or nvidia's.
By the way, is it possible to upgrade the cpu? and how about warranty if upgrading and installing all that stuff?

Here I go with my first answer to you ;)
No, its not possible. The notebook technology is different as the desktop PCs and therefore you will be not able to upgrade the graphic card.

  • HT201364 Upgrading from 10.7 to 10.9 on MBP 3GB memory Intel CPU - Will it work?

I'm told by the guru at one of the Apple shops my MBP will not support maverick.  But the various resources advise if it has an Intel CPU it should!  So before I race off and upgrade, could someone in Apple assure me it will work!
I upgraded to Lion before Christmas and have lost the use of MacOffice, thus before I buy Pages and Numbers which I'm told now only work on Maverick, I need assurances!
Having used Apple products for a few years now as you can see below, in general I've been quite satisfied, but this lack of cross product/version compatibility is unprofessional in the extreme.  Understand the marketing and sales rationale for it, but I hate being a victim to compartmentalised product strategies.
    Your advice most welcom.

Not all Intel processors will meet Mavericks requirements. The complete list of eligible models is below.
To install Mavericks, you need one of these Macs:
    iMac (Mid-2007 or later)
MacBook (13-inch Aluminum, Late 2008), (13-inch, Early 2009 or later)
MacBook Pro (13-inch, Mid-2009 or later),
    MacBook Pro (15-inch or 17-inch, Mid/Late 2007 or later)
MacBook Air (Late 2008 or later)
Mac mini (Early 2009 or later)
Mac Pro (Early 2008 or later)
    Xserve (Early 2009)
    Your Mac also needs:
OS X Mountain Lion, Lion, or Snow Leopard v10.6.8 already installed
2 GB or more of memory
8 GB or more of available space

  • HP Probook 4710s RAM and CPU upgrade!( where to get them?)

Hello, i have a HP probook 4710s, and I also make motorbike videos and general videos with a GoPro Hero 3+, and its full HD at 1080p and 60fps. My laptop can't play this. I can watch full HD videos on youtube for example, but when i try to play it on windows media player the video shatters and lags and I simply can't watch it. I found what seems to be a solution, Some people said i have to upgrade the CPU to a dual core 2.0ghz.. The problem is I don't know much about computers, so can you talk with me like a total noob, please? ANd i also need to know where I can buy the CPU and the RAM online!!!

    Hello Blackdavid.
I am sorry, but to get your issue more exposure, I would suggest posting it in the commercial forums, since this is a commercial product. You can click here for the link.

  • [Solved] HP ProBook 4510s overheating

[this thread was split from original thread - https://bbs.archlinux.org/viewtopic.php?id=100457]
Ok so I have this same laptop (HP Probook 4510s) and have same problem.
I just recently shifted from Fedora 16 to Arch linux (since about a month or so)
In Arch Linux this laptop has already over-heated 3-4 times and SWITCHED OFF directly (hardware tempearture safety gets triggered)
But when I was on Fedora it never got over-heated and never SWITCHED OFF. (Did not happen in earlier versions of Fedora either)
CPU is on ondemand. (default ARCH setting) and acpi_cpufreq module is active. (again by default)
What I have noticed is that in Fedora 16 fan can be heard easily and would automatically go to higher RPM on higher use.
But in Arch I keep noticing that fan is hardily audible (it seems slower than in Fedora) and it goes to high speed very rarely. (only when I am compiling some program) and then it goes almost silent very immediately. (In Fedora it would slow down slowly slowly - less speed, lesser speed in steps)
So its like as if in Arch fan just runs in two speed - low and high and never runs at in between speed.
Mostly crashes happen when I run games like Supertux2. (its supposed to be lightweight 2D game)
I tried fancontrol but lmsensors (sensors-detect) is not detecing fan at all. (did not detect in fedora either).
    So fancontrol does not work.
Do I have to do special setting in lmsensors or my laptop does not support fan sensors?
How do I make sure that fan runs at speed equivalent to that in Fedora 16.
I have tried lots of things from Arch wiki but most articles seem irrelavant (as ondemand is what most of them recommend)
    Please suggest.
    Thank you

@amish, I have the same problems as you. My laptop model is very similar to yours; it's a HP ProBook 4410s. Unlike you, I run off a 128G SSD, so I don't have the option of trying out so many distros and OSes. Here's what I know:
Automatic fan speed control used to work properly some 2-3 months ago. I did not run CPU intensive tasks for a few months, and so I did not notice that the fan speed would not change after boot-up.
"$ sensors" used to report both, CPU temperatures and acpi temperatures. Now, it shows just CPU temperatures.
Under /sys/class/hwmon, I used to have hwmon0 and hwmon1, for CPU temps and acpi temps, respectively
Now, when I do sensors-detect, it finds the Intel digital thermal sensor properly. But after that, one of the odd things that I notice is:
    Trying family `SMSC'... Yes
Found unknown chip with ID 0x4501
I guess this is why "$ sensors" does not show my ACPI temperatures. However, "$ acpi -t" shows me:
    Thermal 0: ok, 45.0 degrees C
    Thermal 1: ok, 22.9 degrees C
    Thermal 2: ok, 36.0 degrees C
    Thermal 3: ok, 34.0 degrees C
    Thermal 4: ok, 41.0 degrees C
    Thermal 5: ok, 16.0 degrees C
The sensors work. On warm days these sensors show higher temperatures than on cold days.
I use a kludge to manually control the fan. This is what I get on my laptop:
    # cd /sys/devices/virtual/thermal
    # for i in cooling_device<0-15>; do; echo -n $i/cur_state \ ; cat $i/cur_state; done
    cooling_device0/cur_state 0
    cooling_device1/cur_state 0
    cooling_device10/cur_state 0
    cooling_device11/cur_state 0
    cooling_device12/cur_state 0
    cooling_device13/cur_state 0
    cooling_device14/cur_state 1
    cooling_device15/cur_state 0
    cooling_device2/cur_state 0
    cooling_device3/cur_state 0
    cooling_device4/cur_state 0
    cooling_device5/cur_state 0
    cooling_device6/cur_state 0
    cooling_device7/cur_state 0
    cooling_device8/cur_state 0
    cooling_device9/cur_state 0
I then manually change the bytes... until the temperature (as reported by "$ sensors") is acceptable. The command is something like:
    # echo -n 1 > cooling_device12/cur_state
I set each cooling_device/cur_state to "1" manually. I start with cooling_device14 and progress towards 0, in intervals of about a minute. Right now, my devices 12, 13, and 14 are set to 1. This, at an ambient temp of 20°C, keeps my CPU at about 30°C.
Perhaps I should write some code to automate this hack, but right now, this manual control "works" for me, and does not take up too much attention. I hope someone more knowledgeable of sensor drivers fixes it before I get down to hacking up some code.

  • Should I upgrade Intel Core Duo 1 Mac Mini (2006) to Snow Leopard?

Okay I have a 80 GB Apple Mac Mini with Intel Core Duo 1 proccessor that shipped with Mac OS X Tiger (10.4.7) currently running 10.4.11 that I want to upgrade to either Leopard or Snow Leopard in a few months just in time for Christmas which I acquired in September 2006. It was the first Mac Mini model to include Apple's Front Row software and shipped with an Apple Remote (I know Macs don't ship with Apple Remotes anymore you have to buy them separately) and am now pondering an update. I've heard some things about Snow Leopard not working so well with older Macs even Intel based Macs that are only 32 bit.
Thing is I just got a new MacBook Pro that shipped with Snow Leopard and it seems to run fine on the MacBook Pro except for the fact a few applications I wanted to install wouldn't work with Snow Leopard like Google Desktop for Mac so was wondering if I should update the Mac Mini also to Snow Leopard. I do not particularly like how Apple removed the transcoding features to export video from one format to another in QuickTime X that was available to QuickTime 7 Pro users (actually reinstalled QuickTime 7 Pro on my new MacBook Pro so I can still use that despite QuickTime X being installed) but like Expose integrated with the Dock Menu that's new in Snow Leopard and features like Cover Flow built into the Finder (available also in Leopard along with Spaces) so if I update the Mac Mini should I update to Snow Leopard or Leopard?
This is a 2nd generation Mac Mini (the 1st generation had PowerPC chips) with Mac OS X Tiger and I've heard some negative news about upgrading Mac Mini to Snow Leopard so I want to get some more feedback on whether or not its worth it. The Mac Mini came with iLife and iWork 06 versions but updated iWork to iWork 08 Family Pack. Still have iLife 06 though and am still running iTunes 8.2.1 on the Mac Mini.
I use this computer as my main system for syncing with iPods (I have a 5th gen video iPod and a 2nd gen iPod Touch that I sync with the iTunes Library on my Mac Mini which includes videos purchased earlier from iTunes Store and music purchases as well as TV purchases) so don't want to risk messing up the system with a Snow Leopard update if it is going to cause problems doing so. If Snow Leopard is not good for the Mac Mini will just update to Leopard and stick with Mac OS 10.5 Leopard on this system.

I upgraded my mac mini 1.5GHz core solo to a Core 2 Duo 1.8Ghz in order to run most of SL's 64 bit stuff. I bought a pulled Core 2 Duo from ebay for $29 and it took about 1.5 hours to do the switch.
The main downside with the 2nd gen Mac Mini is the kernel cannot run in 64 bit mode due to a 32 bit controller that cannot be upgraded. Yet, booting into 32 bit kernel is SL's default setting and as you may have read in articles when SL came out, relying on a 32 bit kernel does not slow down use of 64 bit apps. I maxed RAM to this mac mini's 2 Gig limit years ago which is a good thing for you to do too.
I am happy to report the upgraded Mac Mini runs much faster than originally thanks to the 2 gig of RAM and the Core 2 Duo chip. Installing SL made it run faster still and consumption of memory for apps is lower (smaller pipeline requirements with faster CPU), and about 14 GIG of HDD space was recovered since I did not reinstall Xcode tools. I can now encode 1.5 hour long video files that used to take overnight processing time. CPU runs hotter, up to 89ºC, but usually run only about 10º higher on average than before while fan rev's not noticeably more than before between 1500 to 1800.
If you are not comfortable to upgrade the CPU, I think you will still find some benefit to SL for $25. Alternatively you could sell your Mac Mini on ebay (these 2nd gen model are popular for those want to do the upgrade) and use the proceeds to buy a refurbished current gen Mac Mini.

  • MacBook Intel CPU upgradeable or removable?

Is MacBook Intel CPU upgradeable or removable?

Look like the upgradeable processor is not Apple main business, it could happen later on, but from third party like sonnet, etc.
Once they could figure it out the posibility to upgrade it to a newer processor, they surely sell it.
But if the processor is soldered to the logic board than a hack website is probably give you more but risky solution.

  • Rt speaker of hp probook 4510s is not working

the right speaker of my hp probook 4510s is not working and seems to be replaced

    Hi:
    That is very odd...
I have the Elitebook 6930p and it has the same ADI audio chip and it works 98% fine with W8.
The only thing that doesn't work is I have checked the box to play the W8 startup sound and it will not on a cold boot, but does on a warm boot (restart).
Other than that, the audio works perfectly.
I used the W7 Pro audio driver from the support and driver page which is the same version as yours in an effort to fix the no W8 startup sound on cold boot, but it didn't help.
You will find that the W7 driver from our support and driver page is actually a newer version than the one W8 installs.
My only other suggestion to you would be to install the latest chipset driver and see if that makes a difference.
First download is what you want.
